Displaying Front Row on TV Instead of Computer

I've connected my computer to my HD TV using a DVI-to-HDMI cable, however, even when I set the TV to be the main monitor, when I launch Front Row, it comes up on my laptops screen. How do I make it come up on my TCV screen?

You must have a third party hack like "Insomnia" installed. According to Apple, when you close the lid of a portable Apple computer, it should go to sleep. However, if you have an external keyboard (USB or Bluetooth) attached/paired, AC power plugged in and an external monitor connected then you can wake the computer.
If you have AC power and an external monitor plugged in, you should be able to wake the computer with the Apple remote. This is not documented by Apple, but people here in this forum have had it work.
In addition, people here have reported that they must restart after moving the menubar to the TV to make it the "main" screen before Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5 will recognize this configuration.

  • Displaying front row on external monitor (extended desktop)

    Hi,
I've buyed a MacBook (black) and a VGA cable to connect to an external monitor. I've configured as extended desktop, no problem to work with regular apps...
But i would like to display Front Row on the external monitor, and not on the internal... it should be possiible as i see many people talking about this kind of configuration, but i do not success...
Can someone tell me how to display front row on the external monitor, or point me where i can configure front row ?
    Thanks in advance

Thanks, it's a good beginning, but it make the external display also the default for everything else like menu bar,... i do not want to use the whole macbook on the TV, i just want to use the DVD, video clips, photos,... on the TV... it seems for me a regular use : using the mac for the softwares,... and the TV only for the multimedia display...

  • Front row & shared libraries on same computer

    Hey
My girlfriend and I dont have the same music taste, which is why we like to keep our music on different accounts. However recently I've bought a Mac Mini intended to work as a mediacenter. I've planned to use Front Row along with the remote control, but I still like to keep 2 different music lists for me and the girlfriend.
So far I've tried with 2 accounts on the Mac mini each of them with shared Itunes libraries. I can access the 2 different libraries on other computers fine, but not through Front Row on the Mini itself.
Any ideas on how to solve my issue?
    Thx in advance.
    /Rocky

Ohhh it's easy... just get a new girlfriend ? <G>
    So I see your problem.
Just to be clear, you seem to be aware that using Fast User Switching, as opposed to logging out is the only way to half way make this work. But you are right, it doesn't seem possible to share different iTunes user accounts on the same computer thru Front Row.
As a matter of fact, I was playing a shared song in iTunes from another user on my computer, and when I clicked the remote to engage Front Row, the song stopped....
I would like to point out that it IS possible to share two different user's iTunes on another computer..... so if you set up your first computer with you and your girlfriend's accounts, set iTunes to share on both, then keep both accounts active by using Fast User Switching, THEN on your Mac Mini, you can access both of those shared accounts... just not at the same time.. This is done under the SOURCES menu...
If I come up with any other ideas... I'll let you know.

  • Using Front Row on a second display

TVRow version 2 is now available:
    http://sites.google.com/site/robijnx/products/tvrow201
This allows the user to select which display Front Row uses. It is useful for home entertainment (eg using a projector or plasma TV).
This topic is covered in an archived discussion:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1374039&tstart=0
    and some more background at:
    http://users.tpg.com.au/aoaug/mac_video.html#frontrow
(eg external displays on an iMac G5)
It would be useful if this option was available directly in Front Row settings.

Having used TV Roow 2 for a few weeks, I do find it as nuisance that I cannot swap displays with Front Row running. Sometimes I want to run Front Row on the iMac and other times on the projector. I need to select TV Row from the Dock and change the display option to achieve this. In some respects Version 1 was better because starting TV Row automatically sent Front Row to the projector, whereas starting Front Row with teh Apple Remote left it on the iMac.
Still waiting for Front Row to include a menu to select the display to use...

  • Front Row launches as background process when running second display

When I connect a second display, Front Row launches as a background process and hogs upwards of 90% of my CPU cycles. I've tried connecting things in various orders, but had no success in avoiding this.

try restarting and it will works. it happens to me some of the times or unplug your cable and plug it in again.

  • Computer Monitor Sleeping & Entering Front Row Randomly

Since updating to Snow Leopard, my computer screen will go black and then wake up shortly afterwards (maybe 15 seconds) and then it is also going into Front Row on its own. I just disabled the shortcut, but had not pressed those keys when it entered Front Row.

On clarification. The computer is not sleeping, but the screen is going into screen saver mode or just going dark for about 15 seconds.

  • Front Row Gradient

Has anyone else noticed that black/white the gradient on Front Row doesn't look that great? Instead of being a smooth gradient, you can see the individual lines with different shades of black and white. It looks ok when you are operating Front Row farther away from the computer, but when you get close it is kind of a turn off. Could the gradient be better or are they all like this?
    Any replies are greatly appreciated.
    Thank You.

  • MBP Clamshell Mode - DVI to TV Adapter - Front Row Works - But No Video?

    Hi all,
Have picked up an Apple DVI to TV adapter for my MB Pro. Have successfully got it to work in clamshell mode displaying Front Row on the TV without the external Mouse or keyboard.
However, it will not play videos or movies on the TV.
If I keep the lid open, it will play the video/movie on both displays as hoped. However, when I close the lid, all other Front Row stuff works - but no video picture! Is this some sort of overlay issue? How can I fix this? I do NOt want to burn my LCD when using it this way - would be a waste.
    Please pass on any thoughts!
    Thanks,
    Stu

I also have this exact same problem. A little annoying since I have just spent $A35 on the mini dvi to dvi adapter and another $A50 on a good quality DVI cable. My LCD tv is set to millions of colors so that is not the issue.
I have a 2.0Ghz Core2Duo Macbook. A quick google search If anyone knows how to fix it I'd be very grateful.

  • Is there any way to change the screen resolution in Front Row?

    Hi all,
I've got a Mac Mini plugged in to my TV, and I want to be able to change the screen resolution depending on the content I'm watching (as some content is in 4:3 aspect ratio, some is in 16:9, and I'd prefer to have the picture filling the screen completely). Unfortunately, the TV doesn't have a "stretch" mode for making an 4:3 picture fit a 16:9 aspect ratio. If I know what I want to watch in advance, I can set the resolution accordingly using system prefs on the mac, but if I'm just sitting back choosing what to watch with the Apple Remote, it's annoying to have to leave front row, walk over to the computer and change resolution once I've decided what to watch, open system prefs, change resolution, re-launch Front Row and find what I wanted to watch again.
So I was wondering if anyone had figured a way to allow the screen resolution to be switched from within the FrontRow UI. I've seen that people have written python based plug-ins such as PyeTV and Understudy that allow different types of content to be added to FrontRow, but I've not found any utility plug-ins such as what I'm looking for on the net (nor could I find SDK documentation on this API in the stuff that comes with XCode).
I guess the other approach might be quick keys: has anyone had any success hooking up quick keys macros alongside front row in response to apple remote events? (seems too few events to be able to choose from, but I've never tried it, so I won't assume!) Or how about is there a way to trigger an AppleScript from within Front Row? And, of course, I'm very open to any other ideas you might have!
Thanks very much in advance for any ideas on this.

  • Front row and itunes turning on when apple tv begins

Why does my computer itunes and front row always turn on my computer when I start watching my apple tv?  They play two different things.  I start watching the apple tv and then my computer will start blaring my itunes library or will start a movie using front row.  How do I stop this from happening?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your remote is controlling both devices.
If you don't want to use a remote with your computer the easiest thing to do is just to turn the IR off. (System_Preferences/Security/General)
If you still want to use your computer remote then you must pair your computers remote with the computer AND the Apple TV remote with the Apple TV.
To pair a remote with a device hold down the menu and FF buttons together for six seconds or until you see a chain icon on screen (best take the computer into another room, or turn it off, when you do this)

  • Open Front Row at startup

I am going to be using my Mac Mini as an Apple TV of sorts. I out OS 10.4 on it so that it would run faster and I am a little rusty on my OS 10.4 skills. OS my question is there a way to have front row open automatically when the computer boots.

When I press the menu button on the remote or I press Command Escape it comes up so I know it is installed. Now it is not in the Applications folder, or in the core services folder. Also a search through spotlight turns up nothing.

  • Is Front Row customizable?

Instead of it coming up with the little circle and the choices (movies, music, etc.), I'd love to be able to able to show the catagories that I would customize. They would all be movies (with no need for music and other choices) but I'd love to have "drama", "comedy', etc. come up when front row is launched instead of the general choices. Any thoughts?

Front Row cannot be customized in that way now. You may have some more options with a third party media organizer like Media Central. Before I got an Intel-based Mac I was using it as my media player/organizer. But, I haven't used it for a while now, so I can't remember if you can set the Movies section to open by default. You can, however, put folders ("drama", "comedy", etc.) in your Movies folder and navigate that way.

  • Front Row Gone Wild?

Hello! It seems as if Front Row occasionally likes to go nuts and take up 99% of my CPU and exponentially increasing amounts of memory at random intervals. This happens only when I'm not using Front Row and just using my computer regularly. As far as I can see, the only way to fix it that I've seen is to force-quit the process through Activity Monitor. Does anybody know how to stop this problem from occurring to begin with? Has anybody else experienced this?

I have suffered from this problem 2 times with front row. 99% CPU and all RAM, not even using the application. If this was a windows machine i would seriously consider a virus scan. Clearly this is a bug somewhere. Apple - fix this immediately!

  • I installed Lion, but did not get the multi touch gestures feature. Also my "front row" is gone.

I installed Lion, but did not get the multi touch gestures feature. Also my "front row" is gone.

What model computer do you have? some early trackpads will not support all gestures.
Front Row was dropped by Apple in Lion. I beleive it can be recovered from Snow Leopard, I haven't tried it myself.

  • Although iTunes works with XiphQT and hence ogg files, front Row will not

    Hello,
front Row displays "front Row cannot play the current song" although the underlying QT infrastructure/iTunes plays ogg files just fine. Does anybody have a suggestion other than re-encoding them as mp3s?
    Thanks.
PS. I have the the latest 10.5.2 updates installed through system update.

But the QuickTime player can indeed play ogg files just fine like iTunes. I have the latest version of XiphQT (http://xiph.org/quicktime/), which is installed under what seems to be the QT component directory. If you are still surprised, you could readily test this and get rid of this fairly self-contained component afterward, assuming you don't have tons of ogg files like me.
    Thanks.
