Displaying "gibberish" on finished iWeb site

I currently have a test site up, which was created in iWeb08, at www.heartofredemption.info. I was publishing this site to my .mac account but since I wanted more room and some other options I have picked up a host. Because I am still using iWeb08, I had to "publish to a folder" and then upload the files with my FTP program fetch to my current server. When I was done, it all appeared fine EXCEPT for all these odd "question marks" and "diamond shapes" which you can see clearly if you follow the link I provided above.
I am assuming that these odd "gibberish" abnormalities are from various extra code that iWeb08 uses, but I have been unable to figure out exactly why they appear or how to get rid of them without re-editing the whole site (each page) by hand. Even stranger, some of these "gibberish" icons even show up inside of type that was done with the "html widget".
It appears that mostly these oddities appear where I use things like commas, hyphens, colons such as ":.,:;" etc. Does anyone know why these are appear sometimes and not other times?
My only thought was that perhaps its a font issue, but then how come some of my colons, hyphens, and commas appear but elsewhere they are displayed as gibberish?
Will upgrading to iWeb09 fix this?
Thanks for your time and attention.

Your ftp settings are off. Are you perhaps using the old Fetch 4? Try using the free, modern Cyberduck instead. See the part of this note devoted to ftp settings:

  • How to display HD Video from iWeb site?

I want to put a link on the site that opens an HD resolution video in its own window. Mmm. I used to imbed the videos (only a year ago!?) on a page of the site. But with the HD I want it to pop up 1280 X 270.
How would I go about doing this?
    All ears,
    Ben

To answer my own question. I had the .mov file in a folder on a separate drive. I made a link in my iWeb project to that file in the separate folder on a separate drive.
When I saved and then published the website to its own separate folder ... the movie was copied to that folder.
I used Transmit to upload the whole show to the web. That's when I noticed that iWeb had automatically saved a copy of the movie in its own file structure and was now uploading it. When I went to the new website ... and clicked the movie link: it opened full size against a dark grey background. Not sure where the dark grey background comes from ... but it opened and ran just fine.

  • Firefox not displaying IWeb site correctly

Since the last two Firefox upgrades (I'm on the most current one now) on a Mac, my Iweb site is not displaying correctly.
There are circle graphics on the left side of the page (they fill the left side) and only a few show. When I click refresh different ones will show, but not the whole page.
It's not only on this page, but the other pages as well. Sometimes the masthead won't load or graphics in the portfolio won't load.
Also some of the links to CD Baby (Music Page) won't show and will say "Service Temporarily Unavailable". Sometimes if I refresh a few times those will show up.
    Thanks for your help!

Are you referring to elements added by the iWeb scripts regarding the circles?
Can you add a screen to clarify what you mean?

  • Merge iweb sites from multiple user accounts on same computer

With the previous iweb version, my children created their own iweb sites on their own users, but all under my own .mac account. It worked great.
But now with the new "upgraded" iweb '08, that isn't allowed anymore.
So, I created a new user on our computer for all of us to use to maintain our multiple iweb accounts on.
How can I move multiple iweb sites from multiple users on the same computer into one user?

Each of the user's work in iWeb will be contained in a single file, Domain.sites2, which can be found in this location on the hard drive for each user account. You will need to copy all of these Domain.sites2 files to an external drive, or, at the very least, burn them to a disk to make them transferable from one user account to another. A flash drive also works great for this.
Once you have made all of these Domain files accessible from the new user account that you created, you will still have a formidable task ahead of you, i.e., publishing separate sites, from separate Domain.sites2 files, to the same .Mac account/directory. In other words, bringing all of these Domain files together for access by a single user account will not solve the problem. You may very well be able to solve the problem with things the way they are, but it will involve some shuffling of Site's files on the iDisk prior to publishing.
The method I'm going to give you has worked well for me. So far, here in the forums, I've read posts from (2) other users who were also successful. Conversely, I know of at least (3) other users who have been unsuccessful with this approach. I sure hope it works for you.
Open System Preferences and go to .Mac. Turn syncing off, if it is on, and leave it off.
Now, in Finder, navigate to the current Site files on your iDisk, following this path:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/NameOfSiteFolder
Drag the Site folder that is named for your site, (not the directory Site folder), back one level on the iDisk, into the Web folder. This is where some run into difficulties--you may get an error message that the folder is "in use, and cannot be moved". I have never gotten this message, and am able to move my Site's folders around with no problem on the iDisk.
If you are successful moving the folder, choose one of your other accounts on your machine, launch iWeb, and Publish all to .Mac. The existing site on the server will not be deleted. Now, go back to the iDisk and move that site folder, (the one you just published), back one level, again, to the root Web directory. Publish your next site, from your next account.
When you are finished publishing sites, just move the Site folders back to their original location on the iDisk--Web/Sites/SiteFoldersHere. All sites will be accessible from a browser using the web.mac.com/username/nameofsite url.
It is important to use the Publish all to .Mac command in iWeb. A simple Publish to .Mac command will not put the correct index.html file in place on the server.
Post back and inform us of your success.

Try this community: MobileMe on my Mac: MobileMe: Apple Support Communities.
And you can continue to use iWeb for some time to come. The following will explain:
It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.

  • Is it possible to make an iWeb site accessible to mobile phones? (in Japan)

Is it possible to make an iWeb site accessible to mobile phones? (I'm in Japan)
I've tried making a tiny site but my own phone (au A5516T by Toshiba) can't display it.
The URL is accepted but displays just a white blank screen.
I can't see anything about it in this iWeb forum or iWeb Help. Which I guess means that either it's impossible or that it's so elementary I shouldn't have to ask!
Is there some special code involved?
    Any hints much appreciated. Thanks.

  • IWeb site blank in IE, but perfect in Chrome, Firefox, Safari

    Hello all,
I'm sorry, I know this question comes up again and again, but what I have read and attempted doesn't seem to help my website. I just started using iWeb last week and I really enjoy it. I was using Dreamweaver before which is a great program for CSS and HTML editing, but really doesn't compare to the simplicity and speed of designing with a WYSIWYG like iWeb.
So are there a few big culprits as to why iWeb sites don't display in IE 6,7, or 8? I realize this is pretty much an Internet Explorer problem, but can I fix at least some of the content without doing a ton of hacking to my site?
I am already fixing one issue using Dreamweaver:
    iWeb: +<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>+
    instead of: +<xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8">+
...so I'm not afraid to publish with iWeb, then edit a few things in the HTML/CSS. Can anything be done? It's a fairly simple website: mantheipc.webege.com (ignore text content, needs a lot of revision).
    *Other info:*

    iWeb '08 2.0.4

    Dreamweaver CS5
    Uploading via FileZilla
Tested to work under Firefox, Chrome, and Safari (Mac+PC)
Tested and failed to load in IE 6,7,8 at http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/
Tested and failed to load in IE 6 on XP Laptop
Thanks a lot for your time,
    Dylan

Removing the first line of every HTML document permits the site to load in IE.
    <xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8">
To figure out why IE wouldn't display my site, I created a new blank page and added an image, a hyperlink, a text box, and a fancy CSS text box. I also set a background gradient and page color. The page wouldn't display in IE, so I started deleting HTML by hand with a text editor starting with the most likely culprits (in-line CSS, javascript, etc). I was down to an image, hyperlink, bgcolor, and center tags and the site still wouldn't load. Realizing these are the most basic html tags there are, the only thing left that could cause a problem was that first line.
While I realize this is not at all an ideal solution, it worked. Not only does the site load, but it looks about as good as it does in Firefox and Chrome. No transparency issues or anything! The first line isn't vital to site display, but it does cause the browser to 'guess' what type of encoding the page is in. All of my testing indicated this isn't an issue on my PC or Mac, but I need to try friends and family's PC's too.
    Tested good on:
IE8, Firefox, and Chrome in Windows 7
Firefox, Chrome, and Safari in MacOS Leopard
Thanks again to everyone who read and contributed!

  • What is the maximum number of pages  in an iweb site

Is there a limit to the number of pages I can put in my iweb site?
I managed 30 but ran out of room in the nav bar for more pages.
    Thanks for helping

Roddy's reply woke me up to the fact that my demo sites are seemingly all one site but in actuality are 5 separate sites in one domain file.
Site 1 - Contents which is the page listing for all of the other 4 sites.
Site 2-5 - each of these sites has their own navbar, In that navbar is a Contents page which is a Redirect to the Contents site.
This lets me modify one site, i.e. add or remove a page, and only have to change the Contents site to update the change in all sites. There are numerous ways you can arrange the Contents page.
    This is what it looks like in iWeb;
However, if you have a domain name it will apply to only one of the sites, like the Contents sites which would be the gateway to the other sites
Just one of many ways you can group pages so that they don't all have to be displayed in the navbar of every page.

  • IWeb sites with photo slideshows after migration from MobileMe

I raised this question in another discussion earlier today in response to another post in the MobileMe forum (no answer yet), but the recent confirmation about the death of MobileMe webhosting brings new urgency to this question for me, so I figured I'd post it in the iWeb forum.
I knew that if I migrated my iWeb sites to another host, I'd lose the counter, etc. I wasn't concerned about that, and don't have a blog or comments area that would be impacted. But, on my two sites (iWeb -->MobileMe), there are many pictures--and slideshows are an important part of those sites. Will the slideshow feature of iWeb be able to be used after I migrate to another host  such as hostexcellence or godaddy??? If that's true, then I really do have a problem. (I'm not talking about galleries from iPhoto to mobileme, but photo pages in iWeb sites.)
I've spent a ton of time over the last couple of years on those sites, and would hate to redo them. While there may be alternatives to the iWeb slideshow, it will take me quite a while to figure it out. (I never had a desire to learn how to do that--if I did, I wouldn't have needed iWeb.)
If anybody who uses the iWeb slideshow on a photo page and has their sites hosted somewhere other than MobileMe could let me know--I'd appreciate it. (Let me know which host you use please!) Thanks.
I guess related to this, if it's absolutely not going to work anymore, suggestions would be appreciated. Do I have to redo my sites for this? Is there an "iWeb like" program that has an easy to use slideshow for a photopage that would work? If so, I guess I have a year to redo my sites. )

Past experience has taught me not to rely on media player assets on third party servers. Yahoo pulling the plug on the EasyListener player is a case in point.
As OT has pointed out, the slideshow works on other servers but, according to Cyclosaurus, some necessary assets are on the Apple server.
Wouldn't it be reasonable to expect that Apple will make these assets available after the demise of MobileMe if enough people requested this?
The iWeb method of getting media onto websites leaves a lot to be desired and there are a lot of other ways to display music, movies and photos. The photo page is one of iWebs few triumphs but there are many alternative slideshows and banners.
Most of these methods require that assets are uploaded to, ideally, your own server but its not so difficult once you grasp the concept and the basics of FTP.
iWeb does provide two other methods of publishing apart from MobileMe. The built in FTP is just as quick, easy and convenient as publishing to MobileMe once you set it up.
Publishing to a local folder and uploading via an FTP app. allows you to add SEO tags and optimize the files for faster download.
A good FTP application makes the task of uploading media player assets very easy - drag and drop.

  • Re-Publishing an iWeb site with GoDaddy

I am having a very frustrating issue when a attempt to re-upload my already made iWeb site onto a domain that I am paying for through GoDaddy. I started the site two years ago with a two year plan for hosting on GoDaddy. Everything was fine for those 2 years. Then, just recently those 2 years ran up and the web page went blank. So I payed more through GoDaddy to extend my hosting plan for 3 more years. Through doing this, GoDaddy gave me a new web hosting username and password that they told me to put in iWeb when i launch the site. So I went back to iWeb and when I click the "Publish Site" button, a notification drops down and says that the site cannot be published because the username or password are incorrect. However, it displays the OLD username and there is NOWHERE to change it to the new one that GoDaddy has given me. I have been through every menu I could find in iWeb (I am using the iLife '11 version) and cannot find anywhere to change this username and password. This is extremely frustrating because I am paying for the hosting time even when the site is not running. Please Help!!! THANKS!

  • How to transfer an iWeb site from one MobileMe account to another.

I am creating an iWeb site for a friend. I am doing this using my mac and my MobileMe account. I understand that the iWeb site assets are all stored in my MobileMe iDisk. I want to take the finished site and transfer it to my friends computer and his MobileMe iDisk so he can manage it from there. How do I do this.

If you have your friends MobileMe login details, then you can publish the site to his MMe account directly from your Mac. Go to System Preferences and log out of your MMe account and then into his and then go back to iWeb and then publish the site directly to his MMe account.
As far as giving him the ability to manage the sites, just give him the relevant domain file for the site. Go to User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites and find the domain file and then you can e-mail it to his Mac and he can then put the domain file in the same place on his Mac.
Whatever you do, don't publish the site to your desktop - you won't be able to do anything with it. It is the domain file that you need if your friend wants to manage and alter the site in any way.

  • Built iWeb site for friend with my account. How can I transfer site to his?

Hi everybody. I recently finished creating an iWeb site for a friend while using my MobileMe account. What's the best way to transfer this site to his MobileMe account (so his username, etc. shows up in the url; not mine). I'd like to avoid having to rebuild the entire site while using his version of iWeb/MobileMe.
Am I in trouble or is there a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Will your friend be maintaining the site once it's published to his MobileMe account? If so just copy the domain.sites2 file containing his site to his computer and put it in his User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Once he logs into his MobileMe account via the System/MobileMe preference pane he can make changes and published them to his account.
If you also have a site in that same domain file, duplicate that file, open it with iWeb and delete your site before transferring it to your friend's Mac. Then delete his site from your domain file leaving just your own site. You can delete his site from your MMe account by mounting your iDisk, going to the iDisk/Web/Site folder and deleting the folder that has his site's name.

  • Issues Migrating iWeb Site

I'm having trouble moving my iWeb site from my old MacBook to my new MacBook Pro.
On my old Macbook, I have iWeb 08 (version 2). On my new MacBook Pro, I have iWeb 09 (version 3). I've already moved (from my old computer) my iWeb project (Library > Application Support > iWeb) to the same folder on my new computer. When I launch iWeb on my new computer, the site loads fine, but it looks like I need to re-publish it. However, it's taking forever and it hasn't finished yet. Is there another step I need to do? Is it not as simple as simply moving the iWeb folder contents?
    Thanks!
    B

That's way too long. Stop the process and try the following:
1 - go to the System/MobileMe preference pane and log out of MMe.
2 - login with a bogus username and password like "test" and "test". This clears the caches.
3 - login with your correct username and password.
4 - launch iWeb and try again.
    Next, try:
    1 - close iWeb.
2 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
3 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    4 - reboot.
5 - launch iWeb and see if there's any improvement.

  • IWeb site down?

I've had an iWeb site for a good while, registered through a GoDaddy! account to have a domain name forwarded.
I made some changes to the iWeb last night, only to try and check it and get a message saying my account either doesn't exist or so on and so forth. In any regard it's a page that's NOT my iWeb.
I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue? The site is publishing fine, everything looks OK, it's just the site is not displaying.
If you would like to check it, the site is: consoleculture.com.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    OK...
Your GoDaddy redirect is working fine.
The problem with your links on the front page is this:
    http://web.mac.com/dballance/iWeb/Console%20Culture/Homefiles/imageEffectsAboveCC.png
The reflection of your image is somehow in front of your links. Click on it and "send backward" until it is behind the links, and republish.
Your other pages are published just fine
    http://web.mac.com/dballance/iWeb/Console%20Culture/Videogames.html
    http://web.mac.com/dballance/iWeb/Console%20Culture/Music.html
    However
    http://www.consoleculture.com/Videogames.html
    and
    http://www.consoleculture.com/Music.html
don't work because you have your http://www.consoleculture.com forwarded to
    http://web.mac.com/dballance/iWeb/Console%20Culture/Home.html
    Redirect it to
    http://web.mac.com/dballance/iWeb/Console%20Culture/
instead and people will be able to type in ANYPAGEINYOURSITE.html after http://www.consoleculture.com to get to your forwarded pages.

  • Error when Publishing iWeb Site (iWeb 1.1.2)

I am consistently unable to publish my website. The following is the most recent error:
An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Site/Worcester, MAfiles/_MG0611.jpg”.
Before this one, it was a different jpg image that caused the publish to fail. I feel like three pictures have made the publish fail. I have done nothing different, I just try to keep publishing.
These are the most recent changes that might have effected something:
    1. I upgraded to Leopard.
    2. I edited three pages, removed one page, and added two additional pages.
    3. I did not finish publishing after these changes because I had to board a plane.
    4. I uploaded pictures to my computer, and then ran out of space.
    5. I had troubles, but with Apple Discussion help (thank you) I was able to install my external hard drive, utilize Time Machine, and free up space on my hard drive. (I now have 21G on my internal drive available)
    6. I moved iTunes music folder to external
    7. I added more photos to iphoto, and added another page.
I have tried to publish several times unsuccessfully. Twice, my network went down. The other times, I get a file error (always a different file). And these were pages I did not even touch.
My entire website is now "red", meaning it needs to be published.
