Displaying songs already on my ipod

I recently purchased my ipod nano and a friend put some songs on for me. I'd like to review that list of songs now so I can delete some if I want to. How do I display what is already on it so I can do that? When I click on any of the playlists in the source area nothing comes up.

Well if you set the Nano to manually update, you can then delete selected songs from it. Likewise you will also have to manually add stuff onto the iPod. If you switch to auto updating, songs on the iPod that are NOT in iTunes will get deleted.

If you prefer auto updating, then you want to move those songs from the iPod into iTunes using a third party application, then delete the ones you do not like...

  • Id3 tags for songs already on the ipod

I have properly edited my id3 tags for songs already on the ipod. How can I update the tags for the same music that is on my PC???

So, any idea on how to get the tags updated in the Library?
Yes. Repeat your edits on the songs in the Library.
In the future, don't edit stuff directly on the iPod. Edit it in iTunes and then sync the iPod to copy the changes to it.

  • Itunes re-"updates" many songs already on the ipod

My iTunes has a tendency of updating songs that are already on my iPod. Of the 3000+ songs I have on the iPod, it re-"updates", about 800 or so. It also seems to update those same 800 songs over and over again. It does this 800 song update every 2 or 3 times I plug in the iPod.
I know some of you may be thinking that the problem might be that I'm changing the tags on those songs, but I assure you that I am in no way altering or even touching those songs that update for no reason.
Can anyone tell me why iTunes is doing that, or how I might be able to stop it?
    Custom   Windows XP Pro

There are two things that I do that might be contributing to it, I just noticed. I tend to use the task-manager to end the Itunes.exe, and Ipodservice.exe processes after closing Itunes (I dont like closing a program and finding that it's still doing stuff in the background).
Also, I do not use the 'Eject' button in iTunes to disconnect the ipod, I manually eject it from the My Computer display of the IPOD portable media device.
I'm trying to experiment with it to see if either is actually the cause of the problem. Does anyone know for sure whether or not those processes remember which files need to be updated?

  • ITunes syncs songs already on the ipod

When I connect my ipod and wait for it to upload some new songs, say for example like 5 songs, it ends up syncing songs i already have on my ipod. I noticed that all the songs syncing to my ipod are songs that have been played in my itunes library. Can anyone please tell me how to stop this?

Yes. You should not delete the music from your computer. Sync means make the iPod match the library. An iPod is to easily lost, stolen, damaged, or corrupted to be relied upon as the only location holding the media.

  • Compress songs already on the iPod

I would like to compress songs that are already on my iPod. I tried highlighting them and right-clicking, but there is no "Create AAC Version" option.
Is there any way to do this?
    Thanks.

It has to be done via iTunes. It can't be done on the iPod. Looking at songs on your iPod, you will see that if you choose the advanced menu in iTunes, the option to create a different version is greyed out.
Is your music is in mp3 format? If so, creating an AAC version will not compress it. A song of the same length, encoded at the same bitrate, gives an almost identical file size whether it be encoded in AAC or mp3.
Converting from mp3 (which is a lossy format) to AAC (which is another lossy format) or vice versa will result in a significantly lower quality file than simply re-encoding from CD. Both the AAC and mp3 encoders in iTunes are optimized to encode from full-quality audio sources.
If your music is currently not compressed (say, WAV files), here's how to convert it.

  • How do I manage songs already on my ipod

I want to take songe off of my ipod shuffle and cannot figure out how to connect to the device rather than my library

How are you selecting music for the iPod? Are you syncing a playlist, or choosing for it to be filled automatically? The way that the shuffle is synced was changed from Gen 2 to Gen 3. The way that you are used to using the Gen 2 shuffle, where you have a list of songs inside the iPod under "devices," is simply not available with the newer shuffles. I have a 3rd gen Shuffle, and there is no way for me to reorder the songs inside "music" or inside the playlists within the "devices" area - the only way I can set the order of songs is to create a playlist for syncing, and reorder that playlist the way I want within the iTunes playlists. When I go in through devices, and look at the contents of my Shuffle, I can see the songs, but I can't change the playlists in any way. I think this is the behaviour that Apple has designed for the shuffles after 2nd gen. If you just play the music files in straight-through order, it plays alphabetically by artist name. The only way around this is to create a playlist of the right size to fit on your iPod, preferably a smart playlist unless you always want the same music on there, and sync that playlist across. (Or multiple playlists.)

  • How can you get songs already on your iPod back into iTunes?

I previously posted this question under a really bad title and got no answers, so here's a quick summary with a more relevant title:
Due to some mistakes I made, I lost most of my music library from my computer (& iTunes), but I still have all the songs on my iPod (which I backed up). The problem is that if I try to sync it with iTunes, iTunes simply tries to ERASE any songs on my iPod that aren't already in iTunes. Even if I set the synchronization to manual, which would stop the erasing, I still don't know how to get the songs back onto my computer. (They are stored in an unusuable form on the iPod.)
Below is the original post with more details. This can't be such an unusual situation - there must be a way to recover songs on your iPod back to your computer...
Note to Apple: I'd love to buy a lot more from the Apple store but I can't use iTunes at all until I resolve this.
I had to get a new computer. (I'm using a PC but I love Macs.) The new computer is running XP Pro and I have a 4th generation iPod (click wheel).
Initially I copied the iPod music directory from the old computer to the new one and launched iTunes. It worked - but 60% of my library was missing, including all but 2 of my purchased songs!
Luckily I still have my entire library on my iPod. So I backed up my iPod, then uninstalled iTunes and deleted the iTunes directory from my PC. Then I reinstalled iTunes. Guess what? Somehow it still remembered the previous library (with 60% missing!) And when it saw my iPod attached, it deleted all the songs to match!
Lucky I made that backup - I copied it back to my iPod and things seem fine. But how do I get the songs from my iPod back into iTunes? Especially the ones I purchased from the Apple store. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you kind folks.
    - Jeff

  • ITunes syncs songs already existing on iPod

    Hi All,
I have a very strange problem which I have lived with (and ignored) for some time now, but I'd actually be happy if there was a solution to it. Extended searches on Apple Discussions didn't unearth any information, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I am using a MacBook Pro together with an 80GB iPod (latest model available). The iPod is Windows formatted, since I am also using it as an external hard disk.
My problem is that whenever I sync the iPod with iTunes on my Mac, iTunes each time copies many more files over to the iPod than actually necessary. So say I have added only one folder to the iTunes library since the last sync. I plug in my iPod some weeks later and iTunes insists on copying approx. 300-500 files, although these have been in my library for a long, long time and I didn't even touch them in no way (didn't play them, didn't mess with them on a file system basis, etc.).
I suspect that iTunes determines on a file date basis, which items it has to sync to the mobile device so my assumption is there is a mismatch of file dates on the iPod as opposed to the Mac.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out a solution to this problem until now, but maybe anybody else has and can share it with me? I'd be very grateful for any hint.

    Just to report back:
Meanwhile I was able to try what peterna suggested - unfortunately, no luck. I connected my iPod to the Mac a couple of minutes ago and again iTunes insisted on synching songs which already were on the iPod (100% sure).
But thanks for proposing a potential solution anyway.
I guess I'll re-format in HFS+ to see if this does the trick...

  • Hi. I was given an iPod with hundreds of songs.  Now I have created my own iTunes account on my computer.  Is there any way of adding my iTunes to my existing iPad (someone else's iTunes account) without losing all of the songs already on my iPod?

Hi there.  I was given an iPod loaded with hundreds of songs.  I have created an iTunes account on my computer. Is it possible to add the songs from my own iTunes account onto my iPod, which was created by someone else using their iTunes account, without losing all the songs on my iPod.  Probably a stupid question, but I am one of the "older" generation .... Thanks

The The person who gave yo the iPod did not have the right/licence to also give you the media on the iPod. If you use it yo are stealing.
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content end Settings and set the iPod up with your media.

  • I have two computers connected to my iTunes. but it won't sync. My new computer won't take the songs already on my iPod or give me the new songs on the computer. What do I do?

I tried figuring out the icloud thing but all my settings are set to "on" so it should sync but it isn't... and plugging my ipod into my new computer doesn't change anything. The computer won't pick up the songs on the ipod and the ipod won't pick up the new songs on the new computer.

What do you mean by "won't pick up the songs"?
You can only sync with one iTunes library. However, you can manage mauic and videos among different computer by:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
You can transfer iTunes purchases to a computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

  • Is there a way to update genius on songs already on my ipod?

If i added songs which have not been updated by genius on to my ipod, is there any way i can re update them with out re adding the song from my itunes library?

  • How can I get my songs downloaded onto my ipod

I just signed up for itunes and bought 20 songs. I already have an exsiting ipod with songs on already. All I want is the purchased songs to go on the exsisting ipod without having to erase the songs I already have. It is so frustrating.

My above suggestion means what is on the iPod won't be removed when  you synch but at some point though you may lose the songs already on the iPod unless you have the original CDs and can import them on to your computer.  There is software available to extract files from an iPod but I've no experience of those.

  • New Computer! Trying To Transfer Music already on my iPod to my new iTunes

I just bought a new computer and just installed iTunes. I have about a hundred songs already on my iPod and I want to get them on my new iTunes. right now it wants to clear my ipod which I dont want to do. How can i manually put the songs that are on my ipod on my itunes?

It is very simple. Just take a USB flash drive and plug it into your usb port. Then just copy paste all of your songs into it from your old comp. and stick the USB in your new comp. Copy the files onto your desktop and then go to your new iTunes click FILE, ADD FOLDER, and find the folder from your desktop on your new comp. very simple.

  • Can you delete songs that are already on your ipod?

My Ipod automaticly downloaded all of the songs off of my itunes, and I don't want most of them on there, is there anyway to get rid of them?

There are different ways to delete depending how you have your iPod set to update. If you are updating automatically then delete the files from the iTunes library and next time you connect they will automatically be deleted from your iPod. if you are updating manually, connect your iPod and click on the icon when it shows in the iTunes source list. Find the files on your iPod that you want to remove, highlight them and delete directly. To select multiple items such as all the songs in an album, click on the first track in the list hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight the selection. Then press the delete key.
To summarise, you start by highlighting the song/video/selection in either the iTunes library or on the iPod song list as displayed in iTunes then press the delete key on your keyboard: Deleting songs or playlists from your iPod
There is also a couple of ways that do not involved deleting the files permanently from iTunes. The default iPod setting is automatically update with iTunes when connected. You can keep the automatically update setting and select the "Only update checked songs" option in the iPod Preferences.
When unchecking a song in iTunes, it will not be updated to the iPod and if already on the iPod, unchecking the song in iTunes will remove it from the iPod during the next update with iTunes.
Another is to set your iPod to "automatically update selected playlists only" then all you need to do is remove the song from the playlist and update, it remains in your library should you want to add it in future.
