Displaying songs on the ipod?

When i tranfer songs to my ipod, some have the album details on, but others don't. The song's that don't have an album name do not appear when i go in the artist on the ipod. Do you HAVE to give every file an album name to be able to see them?
Cheers

  • IPod won't sync - "Itunes could not copy (name of song) to the ipod (name of ipod) Because an unknown error occurred (-53)"

I recently bought a used iPod Classic (my previous one was stolen). I still had my iTunes library on my computer so I was just going to hook it up and sync my library over, replacing what was on there from the previous user. When I first hooked it up to my computer (Windows 7 64-bit) there was a message saying the drivers were not installed properly. I un-plugged it, and plugged it back in to the same result. I tried 1 more time and didn't get the error message. I then opened iTunes and clicked on the iPod. I checked for updates, then clicked "Restore this iPod". Next, I set it up to sync music, and the sync began. It seemed to work for a while, the "Syncing iPod" message was displayed at the top, and it said it was copying songs over. It did this for about 10 minutes before I finally got the following message:
"Itunes could not copy (name of song) to the ipod (name of ipod) Because an unknown error occurred (-53)"
After that happens, everything seems to freeze up. iTunes says it's still syncing, but nothing ever seems to happen. If I click the eject button, nothing happens either. I eventually have to just disconnect the iPod. The iPod seems frozen for a while, then it seems to reboot itself (the gray apple window displays), then the interface displays and I can get to the songs on there. But, only a very small portion of my library makes it to the iPod. I've tried several times now and it always seems to be the same songs that DO make it onto the iPod. However, it's a different song listed in the error message each time, so it doesn't seem to be just 1 song causing the problem. Also, once I hook the iPod back to the computer, Windows displays a message prompting me to scan the drive and fix errors. I did it once and it said it found some errors and fixed them.
    I saw this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3924425
and some people were suggesting removing everything from your library then re-adding it, in case the paths were messed up. I tried that and still got the same results. I also updated iTunes to the latest version, and I've tried different USB ports and 2 different USB cables.
I also found instructions for a batch file you can run that, I believe, updates the iTuens DLLs, I did that as well but it did not help: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539

Im not sure what this means or how to fix it. any sort of advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.
Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync".

Sounds like your iPod is broken. Take it to Apple or someone else who repairs iPods and see if you can get it fixed, or get it replaced.

Everytime I try to add a new song to the Ipod, this message comes up and I am not sure what to do:
The Ipod, (my name) is synced with another ITunes library on A74F65. Do you want to erase this Ipod and sync with this ITunes Library?
An Ipod can be synced with only one ITunes library at a time.  Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this IPod with the contents of this ITunes library.
Then it asks me if I want to delete and sync.
I am not sure what to do for fear of erasing everything I have put on my Ipod.
I would appreciate if someone could help me out.

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to use iTunes to play the Music in your iPod but which is not in your itunes library. I don't think Apple design iTunes for use in your way. As to put and play music in iPod, the music has to be in iTunes first, so you play music in the iTunes music Library. the window with Ipod music is just to show you which music are already in the Ipod, in case you want to Manually Manage your huge music library.
Here is the iPod/iTunes manual from the Apple Support Site.

  • How can you delete songs off the ipod without deleting songs off your itunes library?

How can you delete songs off the ipod without deleting songs off your itunes library?  My son's ipod automatically synced all the songs in my library to his ipod which he now wants to get rid of.  Is there a way to delete them all without me having to erase my library?

Do not select the songs to sync, then sync.

  • Songs on the iPod "(My Name)'s iPod" cannot be synced because . . .

Okay, so I downloaded a lot of t.v. shows and my ipod was too full. So itunes automatically did something I didn't quite understand (not surprising, I'm so new to Macs). iTunes made a playlist and all my songs went there and it deleted my t.v. shows from my iPod. Today I was trying to figure out how to get those shows back on my ipod. I was trying to erase stuff I didn't want to make space. I guess I erased the new playlist thing that iTunes automatically created. Or did something else weird in my attempt to make room for my shows on my ipod.
Now, when I try to sync it says: Songs on the iPod "(My Name)'s iPod" cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist.
I looked for what I deleted in the trash but couldn't find it . . . probably because I don't know what I'm really looking for.
So now my ipod won't sync. And I'm still not sure how to make room for my t.v. shows on my ipod. And before I screwed up the syncing and looked up how to transfer only selected items I read something about a "Summary Tab" that I can't locate.
I'm really, really stupid when it comes to all this. Sorry. I need lots of help.

Yes, the TV files are the problem, the TV + music libraries exceed the capacity of the iPod, this is why iTunes made that playlist for you. All you will need to do is re-build a playlist or lists, say one music, one TV, with the content you want on your iPod. In your iPod preferences, & I believe it will be the summary tab, ( but I don't have my iPod docked right now), just tell iTunes to sync those 1 or 2 specific playlists to the iPod. This should fix you right up, but please post back if you have any questions.

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod and then the playlist it has been updating from is deleted. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, iTunes by default makes a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano).
