Displaying the File Name in a Cell

In version 2 of Numbers you used to be able to display the file name in a cell. If you copied a worksheet and gave it a new file name, that new name would automatically appear in the cell, so at a glance you could see which version of the worksheet you were looking at. As far as I can see that facility has gone in Version 3. Unless I have missed something?

Hi Xabianblanca,
Not *quite* as convenient but of course there is an easy partial workaround for this.
Step 1. Click the triangle next to the document title:
Step 2. Command-c. (the document name has already been selected for you).
Step 3. Select the cell where you want to insert the document name and command-v.
As for the Insert Date and Time menu pick there is a workaround that is just as easy to use as the original menu pick, after a quick one-time setup.
See the other workarounds in that thread for some of the other features that weren't included in Numbers 3.0.

• How can I get the Organizer in Elements 12to display the file name and date of the thumbnail images?

The View menu option to display the File Name is grayed out and thus I cannot display the file name.

Hi,
You need to go to View menu and check Details as well.
You may even have to make the thumbnails larger by using the zoom slider at the bottom
Good luck

• Not to display the file name in the browser bar.

Hello,
Merry Christmas to all,
Is it possible not to display the file name in the browser bar?
Like say, when we write www.rediff.com, the index page name is not displayed.
Likewise is it possible for any other page too.
What I want is not to display any of the page name for the whole application.
Whichever page is requested the page name should not appear in the address bar of the browser.
How will I do that, what logics should I apply?
Please suggest,
Thanks,

first, what does this have to do with Java?
second, no; in order to display something, the browser needs to know where it is. and if it knows, then a user can find out too. maybe you can make it not show up in an address bar sometimes, but that really achieves nothing

• Can I display the File name at the bottom of the Grid view window?

Dang. I'm probably going to catch some flak for this... but I can't find where this bone is buried. When the main viewer is in grid mode, the bottom of the window says "1 selected - 9 items displayed" or something to that effect. Is there a way to replace that with the name of the file(s) that is currently selected?
I have searched the manual and tried many of the Metadata display options and can get all kinds of info to show up when double clicking to bring that image full screen. But I'd like to see its name when simply selected in the grid view.
Obviously that info is available in the Info pane to the left. But when doing basic organizing, I like to leave that side on the Library pane.
Screen grab for the situation I am talking about:
Thank you!
Bo

Bo,
I have no idea, if it would be possible to change the caption in the line below the grid.
But why not add the filename of each image to the grid view like this?
Edit the metadata for the Gridview (expanded or basic) to include the "File name" and arrange the display order to show the Filename first. This way you will see it bleow each image.
Another way to alway see the filename would be to set the Metadata Tooltip to include the filename, and to enable the tooltip, when you are using grid view.

• How to display the file name & status when copying files.

I write a program to backup/copy data from one directory to other directory, and I'm using File List and Runtime.getRuntime().exec("xcopy "+dir1+"\\"+name+" "+dir2+" /y");
to copy the files, so it will copy the file one by one, and everytime one file is copied, I want to display the result to the screen, but guess what has happened, the screen just display a blank screen, and wait until all the copying processes finish, then it will display all files that has been copied.
Appreciate your expertise to check my coding below.

ScrollPaneConstants.VERTICAL_SCROLLBAR_ALWAYS,
ScrollPaneConstants.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_NEVER);
JFrame backupWindow = new JFrame("Backup Data");
backupWindow.setBounds(320,240,400,330);
backupWindow.getContentPane().add(backupScroll);
backupText.setText("Copy files from "+backupSource.toUpperCase()+" to "+backupDest.toUpperCase()+" : \n\n");
backupWindow.show();
for (int i=0; i < fileList.length; i++) {
backupText.append(" ("+ i +")... processing " + fileList);
done = copyFile(fileList[i],backupSource,backupDest);
if (done=true) {
backupText.append(" -> done. \n");
else {
backupText.append(" -> fail! \n");
boolean copyFile(String name, String dir1, String dir2) {
try {
java.lang.Process proc =
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("xcopy "+dir1+"\\"+name+" "+dir2+" /y");
proc.waitFor();
return true;
catch (IOException e) {
return false;
catch (InterruptedException e) {
return false;

Oops, sorry, I should have written "Process.getInputStream()". Here's an example from:

How can I pass a string to the command line(DOS) ? Also i want to capture the output given by the command line in a string.
Answer: Try this out:
// works for DOS
String cmds[] = new String[2];
cmds[0] = "dir"; // replace with "ls" on UNIX
cmds[1] = "c:"; // replace with "/" on UNIX
// execute the command
Process pro = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmds);
// wait until it's done executing
pro.waitFor();
// what did the process output from the Input pipe back to
// this process (okay, who named this stuff)?
InputStream out = pro.getInputStream();
// output it (really slowly)
int i;
while ((i = out.read()) != -1) System.out.println((char) i);==============
Although I don't think this example will do exactly what you want... you might have to delete the waitFor() call and just check to see when there's nothing else to read from the InputStream. It's a start, though, and the web page has a lot of similar examples of this sort of thing.

• Displaying the file name in a slide show?

In a Lightroom slide show, how do I display the filename with each image?

In the Slide Show Module, below the image, in the toolbar click on <ABC>, and then on the small double triangle. In the fly-out menu select <filename>.
See screen shot:
You can adjust the location and size of the text. Click directly on the text to make the bounding box visible. Then drag to wherever you want the text, and/or resize the box to size the text.
While the bounding box is visible, the <Text Overlays> panel on the right side is activated. In it you can choose a different color for the text, and also a different font, font size, etc.

• Configuration - Display of file names

I am running DW8 and SourceSafe 2005. Everything was working
well. At some point DW began displaying the file names as 8.3
filenames with the ~ at the end of the name if the file name was
longer that 8 characters. Everything still saves to SourceSafe
correctly and I am able to put the files to the Web server
correctly. In each of those areas the long file names are correct,
but in DW I get 8.3 names. This is very difficult because are files
are grouped by type of page, so if it was a product page the file
might be called productBaseContent.jsp, or productExtContent.jsp,
and in DW you see produc~1.jsp, and produc~2.jsp.
I have looked and tried to find a solution, but to
noavai~1..... So I then uninsta~2, and reinst~3 DW, this also did
not solve the issue. Any help would be gladly accepted...

A FileDialog just returns a String, which is the pathname of the file that was selected when the dialog was dismissed. The FileDialog does not automatically do anything with that String, like open the specified file. What you do with the String is up to you.
Are you using the String to try to open a file? If so, post that code.

• Displaying complete file names on the desktop

I think there was a way to get the finder to display the complete file names on the desktop. Some terminal command. Can anybody help?

I have files on the Desktop that don't have that issue. But when I add characters to them I eventually reach the breaking point -- 37 characters is fine; 38 characters causes the file name to truncate. I suppose there may be a way to set a secret pref to show a larger number of characters using Terminal.
Anyone know how many characters the OS file system is limited to -- ignoring display issues, I mean?

• I am unable to retrieve spreadsheets. Numbers displays the "Welcome To Numbers" page but does not allow saved spreadsheets to be opened. It offers the "Open Recent" choice and displays saved file names but does not allow these files to be accessed.

I recently upgraded to Numbers 3.5.2. I have an older Macbook Pro (2009) and I run Yosemite 10.10.2. I am unable to open any saved files that were created with earlier versions of Numbers. When I open the Numbers app, I am offered the Welcome To Numbers page. When I choose the 'Open Recent' option, I am offered the greyed names of files that I had recently used, however, I am unable to open any of these files (no error message is displayed). Welcome To Numbers stays on the screen. I tried opening the app by clicking on the file name but it produced the same results. I am having a similar problem with Pages. I suspect a compatibility problem between the new OSX and the new iWork offerings. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Does it require a setting change or is it a bug?

I managed to download and install the iWork '09 apps. However, when I attempt to open the app, I receive this error message:
Numbers cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Numbers works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.

• Set Attached File name to Table Cell

Hello All,
I have a scenario where:
1. I have a dynamic table.
2.Every Row has a Button for attaching the new File.
3. When we add new Row to the Table, I want to get the attached file name in the corresponding cell. i.e Cell2 in following example.
I have tried doing it this way
The script which I'm using on Add button is
app.execMenuItem("AddFileAttachment");
var o = event.target.dataObjects;
var n = "";
DataNode.Table1.Row1.Cell2.rawValue = "";
if (o !== null) {
for (var i = 0; i < o.length; i += 1) {
n = o[this.parent.index].name;
var countVal = (DataNode.Table1.Row1.instanceManager.count-1);
xfa.resolveNode("DataNode.Table1.Row1["+countVal+"].Cell2").rawValue = n;
But I'm not able to display the attached file name in Cell2 of the Table.
How can we do it?

• Is it possible to know the file name of images loaded?

Hi:
I have a folder containing some images named 01_image_name.jpg, 02_image_name.jpg, 03_image_name.jpg, ... wich names I read with a PHP script. Then I loop loading each image and waiting until all are loaded to display them
1. The PHP script reads file names and returns a string with names separated by a "|" char, then I use the split method to store them in imagesNames array and sort it
2. I loop trough imagesNames array loading images
3. Anytime a new image arrives I push it in imagesContainer array and check if all images are loaded to show them
The problem is there's no guarantee they arrive in the same order they were requested. So, how I sort the imagesContainer array by file name, i.e. in the same order they are in imagesNames array?
Thanks in advance

if you know when a new image arrives and you can retrieve that new image file name ...
Well, that's precisely my doubt, how can I know the file name? Is there a property/method for it?
function loadImages() {
for (var i:int=0; i<imagesNames.length; i++) {
var imgLoader:Loader=new Loader;
imgLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,imgLoaded);
imgLoader.load(new URLRequest(imgPath + imagesNames[i]));
function imgLoaded(par:Event):void {
trace(par.target,par.target.content,par.target.content.name);
Output window:
[object LoaderInfo] [object Bitmap] instance160
[object LoaderInfo] [object Bitmap] instance159
[object LoaderInfo] [object Bitmap] instance161
