DisplayPort to VGA Dongle

I have a T500 Model 2242-CTO running XP SP3. Graphics adapter is Intel Mobile (R)4. Trying to connect two old dell 19in external VGA's. One to the VGA port and the other to the DP using the DP to VGA dongle. No docking station involved. Only straight to the side of the T500. The VGA port works fine all the time in dual diplay with the laptop LCD. The DP to VGA works fine in safe mode but in normal startup goes into a continuous reboot loop right after a blue screen. It almost gets to XP though. Goes through the BIOS screen and then on to the Windows Startup screen but hangs and reboots it seems right before it gets to the Windows login screen. Downloaded latest updates/drivers for the graphics adapter and power management. Still no go. Went to Intel and installed Intel drivers and same results.
Anyone please help. Frustrating displayport works in safe mode and not in regular startup. I am thinking there is some sort of issue between power management and the graphics adapter driver.

I had  this problem as well, and I suspect it is the problem with the intel graphic driver. on my machine sometime it works, sometime it doesn't. Maybe the driver has issue with suficient memory while booting up to support Dp and vga. One way i found working is to disconnect the DP cable, after completed bootup then I connect the DP cable in, and select 2 monitors.
Another solution is to download a software ultramon, then after configuring it to 2 display, to the settings that you like, leave it alone. On the intel graphic options side, select only ONE display (ie the thinkpad LCD screen). Reboot and when it starts up, it should boot up correctly. When it does, then click on the ultramon to show 2 displays.
When the above is working, download some software that will trigger the ultramon after window has completed booting or just do it manually like above.
Hope that helps.

Hi.  I am considering buy a HP computer.  I would like to purchase a graphics card with the computer, but is a 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 705 [DVI, HDMI, DVI to VGA Dongle a video card that you can install internally?  I have another question--does the HP Pavilion 500-200t have a extra bay to install a secondary hdd?  Any help will be appreciated.  mary

    Hi,
This is a CTO machine, you have few choices for a video card:
        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c03983802
Must select one of the following options:
Integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600 (GT2) (supported by the processor)
    GeForce GT 625 (1 GB)
    Radeon HD 8470 (1 GB)
    Radeon R5 235 (1 GB)
    Radeon R7 240 (2 GB)
And no, it only has ONE HDD bay you can remove ODD and put one moe HDD if you wish.

using Minidisplay port to vga. will not connect to any projector with cable longer than 1 meter.

you would need a vga signal booster/repeater, which should boost the VGA signal for VGA cable as long as 50 m. The device is around 50 to 250 USD depending on the brand, number of vga ports, etc.

  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA in Boot Camp

    Hi all!
So I'm looking to unload my old G4 laptop and get a new MacBook or MacBook Pro. But there's something... scaring me.
I do a lot of video mixing through projectors or TVs, often in situations where s-video is the only available option (I usually do it in straight SD video). And right now, I have to depend on a Windows laptop with an s-video port for using Resolume. So the idea of having a machine with Boot Camp, running everything, is great.
But only if I can go out from it into a projector! On the Mac side, it looks like that would work fine---I'd just buy the Apple mini DisplayPort to VGA dongle:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
And then, if I need to go to s-video (which I often do), get a little scan converter, like:
    http://www.grandtec.com/products/video/untimateEZ.html
But my concern is---does the mini DisplayPort to VGA dongle work in Boot Camp? If so, I'll be very happy. If not... If not I just might have to buy a Windows laptop, and will be very sad indeed.
    Thanks for your help!

Sorry, I do not run Windows on my Mac's so I can not say for sure.

  • MBP CD2 DVI to VGA not working with projector

I am having issues getting the MBP to recognize a DELL 2300 projector through a DVI to VGA apple cable.
A few months ago there were posts about this, but no solutions. The problem seems to be with the 'INTEL' side of things, as the same projector with the same DVI to VGA apple cable works on an older G4 tower running 10.4.9. The projector also works on an old G4 iBook with it's version of a VGA adapter. To make things more confusing, a DVI to Video apple cable works with the DELL 2300 on my new MBP C2D-but produces a terrible quality picture. Mysteriously, my previous 1st generation MBP CD worked with the DELL 2300 via a DVI to VGA apple cable (but I'm not sure which OS was out at the time 10.4.8?)
My new MBP CD2 definately recognizes the projector through the DVI to VGA adapter, but the projector doesn't recognize the video signal from the computer. It is DEFINATELY the MBP (or universal drivers), as I have checked the DVI to VGA dongle (works), have checked the projector (works with an ibook running 10.4.8 OSX with VGA dongle), have changed resolution settings before and after connecting, have restarted computer, have tested various orders of connecting the projector and cables. STINK! (I also have TWO DVI to VGA adapters, so it is not a bad adapter). I have also played with exchanging various plist files from older universal versions of 10.4.8 that worked with the projector-no help.
As I stated, the projector will work (in horrible quality) with a DVI to Video dongle. Why it will not work with the DVI to VGA dongle is a mystery and annoying I would hope that a newer MBP CD2 would be plug and play (like my previous MBP CD and an old G4 tower and an old iBook G4...but no).
Any ideas, any help, any answers?

Here are the actors in our play today
    1. MacBookPro A. (my system a CD2 2.16 with OSX 10.4.9)
    2. MacBookPro B. (my friends system a CD2 2.16 with OSX 10.4.9)
    3. an iBook (my friends 1.07 GHz G4 with 10.4.8 and a VGA adapter)
    4. DELL 2300 MP projector
Plugged in DVI to VGA adapter to the virgin MacBookPro B (never had the projector plugged into it before) Dell projector shows that it recognizes an analog RGB 800X600 signal from MBP B. It projects a beautiful desktop. All is well for a moment.
In Display preferences we see for the MBP B
Color LCD, Display: 800X600 stretched, Colors: Millions, Refresh Rate: N/A
    VGA Display
Now, I unplug the DVI to VGA adapter and naturally MBP B readjusts to it's native resolution. Great.
Now I immediately plug back in the DVI to VGA adapter. The computer and the projector searches for signal with none found, while the computer shows no attempt at an automatic readjustment as above (800X600 stretched).
I try the 'detect display' option. It causes computer to stall for a second (as it searches) but it does not detect projector and does not readjust it's own resolution to 800X600 stretched as it did initially. F7 key does nothing.
    This is a problem!
So, I shut down the projector. I unplug the projector's power source and waited 20 seconds. plugged it back in, started projector back up.
    I shut down/restarted the MBP B.
I plug back in the DVI to VGA adapter into the MBP B. The MBP B screen flashes to all blue, but does not automatically change to 800X600 stretched (remains at native resolution and does not recognize an external monitor/projector)
    Enter the iBook!
I plug the iBook's VGA adapter into the projector. The projector shows that it recognizes an analog RGB 1024X768 60Hz signal and projects desktop screen immediately. Plug and play!
    iBook display prefs reveal:
Color LCD, 1024X768, colors: Millions, Refresh rate: N/A
    Color tab: Generic RGB Profile
    VGA display, 1024X768, colors: Millions,
Now. I unplug adapter from iBook, iBook readjusts to native display
plugged back in adapter to iBook, immediately recognizes and displays projected desktop.
    Scene 2: The FREAKY thing!
Now, I immediately (after unplugging the adapter from the iBook) change adapters to the DVI to VGA adapter and plug the projector into the MacBookPro B, whallla! Back in business. (computer screen adjusted to 800X600, and projector recognized signal).
Now, what about my computer? I unplug from MBP B and plug into MacBookPro A, and NOTHING...the computer doesn't automatically adjust to a new resolution, and the projector doesn't recognize any signal from the computer.
Ahhhh Freak out! Now, I plugged adapter back into MacBookPro B, and now back to NOTHING. MBP B no longer recognizes projector or readjusts it's resolution. Was something somehow corrupted?
Now, I plugged iBook VGA adapter back in, and iBook once again with it's awesome G4 technology (or dated video drivers or something) recognizes the projector in an instant and projects the screen.
Now, logically I try again to immediately unplug the adapter from the iBook and switch adapters and plug back into MacBookPro B-it worked once right? But, sorry, NOT twice. The mystery deepens.
Well, I think, maybe it is because I didn't restart MacBookPro B before attempting the switcharoo from iBook to MacBookPro.
So, I plug back into iBook-projector. And the iBook works immediately again.
I restart MacBookPro B and plug in to the freshly restarted MBP B...HOUSTON WE HAVE LIFT OFF! The MacBookPro B recognizes the projector and the projector kindly displays the desktop.
Now what about MacBookPro A...Last time, when I did the switcharoo, it corrupted something to cause the MBP B not to work. Let's try it again. Will this plug-unplug-restart-switch adapters-immediatly plug in technique work...let's see. I restart MBP A, and plug DVI to VGA adapter in. Sorry. Same ol' no signals recognized. MacBookPro A not auto readjusting resolution, and does not list any projector in display prefs.
Let's get crazy and immediately plug the adapter into the MacBookPro B...it works-oh so logical...NOT! Why wasn't it corrupted this time by MBP A? MacBookPro B readjusts its screen to 800X600 stretched and projector immediately recognizes and projects desktop.
Now lets see if I can break it again as before. I unplug it from MacBookPro B and back into MacBook Pro B, knowing that this caused it to stop working previously. And...it still works-WHAT? I do it a third time. It still works on MacBookPro B.
    So,
I plug it back into MacBookPro A...still nothing. Back to MacbookPro B works like a charm. This time it struggles a bit showing that initially it sees a signal from MacBookPro B of 1192X900 (i Think), then the MacBookPro B switches automatically to 800X600 and the projector works.
Wait..I see something amiss! I see in my MBP A menu bar an icon for Labtick which MBP B does not have. I shut down Labtick, plug back in the DVI to VGA adapter and 'Boom' the projector is recognized.
I unplug DVI to VGA adapter and plug back in to MBP A and 'Boom' the projector is recognized again...no it couldn't be!
Well, it is possible it couldn't be because, I shut down the projector, unplug it's power source, plug it back in. I plug it back into the recently working MBP A with Labtick not running, and sorry folks, now the projector doesn't work again. The MBP A does not readjust it's resolution, nor recognize a projector and the projector doesn't recognize the MBP A.
Let's try the projector in MBP B....same deal. Now it doesn't work. Same symptoms of MBP A.
Back to the good ol' iBook. Of course it works.
Now switching over directly to a restarted MBP B. -DOESN'T WORK (as it did using this technique previously)
Now switching over to MBP A- DOESN'T WORK.
As you can see, it is hard even with multiple computers to find a series of doing things that consistently makes the projector work.
Any thoughts, ideas, ways to diagnose? Thanks!

  • VGA Adapter and 1920x1080

I have an odd problem with my 2011 MBP (15").  I use an external monitor (Samsung SA350, identified as SMS23A350H by the mac) hooked up to a KVM switch using the VGA port.  The display support 1920x1080@60hz.  It gets detected as such, and everything works fine when I close the lid and only use the external monitor.  However, when I open the lid and try to use both displays (mirroring off), the content of the external monitor is compressed -- There's about an inch of black on the left side of the monitor, and a half inch on the right.
The thing is, all of the content is displayed -- it's just shrunk down to a smaller size.  The MBP thinks it's running at 1920x1080.  About the only difference I see between the bad setup and the good one is that the monitor identifies its signal as "67.4khz 60hz NN" vs "67.4khz 60hz PP".  I don't know what NN and PP mean, and Google is little help.
It's not the cable or the KVM switch, since it works correctly with the lid closed.  It also works correctly using a DVI adapter instead of the VGA, even with the lid open.  The same monitor/cable/KVM setup worked fine on my old (2008) MBP.  Has anyone seen this before?

If you are showing a "non-plug and play" monitor in the Windows device manger, I would guess is a problem with the "DDC-EDID" communictaion link between the computer and the monitor. Either the monitor isn't reporting, the computer isn't reading, or the link (cable) is damaged. If you have another monitor and/or computer and/or VGA cable, try swapping them around to determine where the issue is.
    Examples...
    1) HP Elite H8-1240t with different monitor
    2) HP W2371d monitor with different computer
    3) Repeat 1 or 2 with a different VGA cable
    4) Try a different DVI-to-VGA dongle adapter with the HP Elite H8-1240t and HP W2371d monitor
    5) Try a different VGA cable with the HP Elite H8-1240t and HP W2371d monitor
    6) Try a different DVI-to-VGA dongle adapter and a different VGA cable with the HP Elite H8-1240t and HP W2371d monitor
If you can't identify the issue from the steps above, you may wish to manually set the Windows resolution to 1920 x 1080 and set the refresh rate to 59 or 60 Hz.

  • Pavilion h8-1128 w/Radion HD 6750: VGA disables DVI!!!

I need to run 2 SAMSUNG monitors of of my h8-1128 that came with an Eyefinity Radion HD6570.
Operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Both monitors support DVI and VGA inputs. The HD6570 has DVI-I, HDMI, and DisplayPort outputs, and a DVI to VGA dongle.
After looking into cables a bit, I located this cable:
StarTech.com DVIVGAYMM6 6-Feet DVI-I Male to DVI-D Male and HD15 VGA Male Video Splitter Cable
    by StarTech
    Product Features
Connect a DVI-D and a VGA Monitor simultaneously to a single DVI-I video source
    Easy to use and install
    Backed by StarTech.com's lifetime warranty
DVI-I Male connector to DVI-D Male and HD15 VGA Male connectors
    Connector A 1x DVI-I (29 pin) Male, Connector B 1x VGA (15 pin; High Density D-Sub) Male, 1x DVI-D (25 pin) Male
That appeared to do what I santed by splitting the 6570's DVI connector's digital and analog signals into appropriate connectors.
I connected the cable to the graphics card, then connected the  DVI-D male connector to the 1st monitor and verified operation. Next I connected the VGA connector to the 2nd monitor and turned it on. Immediately the DVI connected monitor's screen went black, altho the monitor did not indicate signal loss, and the VGA connected monitor came on & displayed the desktop as the primary monitor!
The screen resolution window only showed the VGA connected monitor as a generic plugNplay monitor. When that same monitor was connected using the DVI->VGA dongle that came with the system the monitor is correctly identified as a SAMSUNG 245BW.
I could not get the  screen resolution window to recognize the DVI connected monitor until I disconnected the VGA cable from it's monitor.
Is this expected operation? I thought the VGA analog signaling was independent of the DVI-D signaling?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Use the DVI->VGA dongle on the 6570's DVI connector with a VGA cable to the monitor that's being shared with the CATV box, then either a HDMI to DVI cable, or a DisplayPort to DVI cable.
You are correct... that would be the way to do it.

  • Mac Mini - 2 VGA monitors

I am interested in purchasing a new Mac Mini to use with my two VGA monitors.  I understand that one monitor can come out of the thunderbolt port with a converter cable; no problem.  Can the other one come out of the HDMI port?  If so, what cables are needed?

There are two video out ports on the back of the mini. You use each one to drive one monitor.
(driving two monitors off of one port is a whole other topic)
One is mini - displayport. That's where the mini displayport to VGA dongle would go. Then connect through with the VGA cable to monitor 1.
See example: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A   Other manufacturers have this as well, for less and should be compatible. (monoprice, check the reviews )
Two is the HDMI port. That's where you need to go from HDMI to VGA with a convertor box. Then connect through with a VGA cable to monitor 2.
I do need to mention that I wasn't aware that that Apple includes a HDMI to DVI adapter actually with the system * .  So if you were to use Apple's adapter you can use a DVI to VGA CONVERTOR actually. (instead of the HDMI to VGA CONVERTOR I said earlier)  So you have two options. It probably costs about the same. Personally I'd probably keep it simple and not use the DVI dongle. Switching connectors and converting there is always a higher risk of some incompatibility.
    Hope that helps

  • ITunes movie freezes and skips with VGA out to projector

    Hi,
I have rented several movies on iTunes and can watch them onscreen no problem. When I used the VGA dongle to source the screen to an external projector, however, the movie gradually began to skip and freeze, with up to half a second pause between frame updates. Rebooting did not change this; however, after pulling out the adapter and just watching it onscreen, the movie was fine.
Has anyone else had this problem? And any idea what I can do about it?

this is probably because of the low processor, and integrated graphics. the Macbook pro has a graphics card that helps process the images, while the MBA relies on the processor to control graphics.
The video isn't smooth because of the slow processor.

  • ThinkCentre M92z - Displayport not responding

I work for a school system & we had an issue with a couple of ThinkCentre M92z not booting up. We went in & reimaged them, but now they will not recognize the Displayport port. We use a DP to VGA dongle for our classroom projectors & they were working. I have tried to update the drivers but that did not help. Any ideas?

Support tells me that this model does not support 'wake on alarm' via WMI.
I'm trying to configure the settings with CFGWIN.exe’
When I capture the M92z settings with this tool I get the following output
    Wake from Serial Port Ring,Disabled;[Optional:Primary,Automatic,Disabled]
    Wake Up on Alarm,Daily Event;[Optional:Single Event,Daily Event,Weekly Event,Disabled]
    Hardware Password Manager,Enabled;[Optional:Disabled,Enabled]
So I can enable Wake Up on Alarm only I can't configure it?
When I capture the bios settings from a M93z I get the following extra lines
    Wake Up on Alarm,Daily Event;[Optional:Single Event,Daily Event,Weekly Event,Disabled]
    Startup Sequence,Automatic;[Optional:Primary,Automatic]
    Alarm Time(HH:MM:SS),12:55:00
So why doesn't the M92z allow this?
Also I can't find the bios manual for the M92z only for the M92/M92p/M82 that tells me Wake on alarm isn't supported.

  • Can I use thunderbolt Ethernet and VGA?

Is it possible to simultaneously connect a thunderbort ethernet and VGA adapter?
I'm fairly certain there is no hub available for Thunderbolt, but I'm not sure if there is perhaps an Ethernet or VGA dongle with a second port on it to daisy chain.
I am aware of the USB Ethernet dongle Apple sells but it would be nice to have an option that doesn't eat up the scarce USB ports.

Indeed, there are 'hubs' for Thunderbolt available.

  • MSI NEW P.E. Series Video Card - GTX670 Power Edition 2GD5/OC with Twin Frozr 4

Glad to be back in the forum and I was been busy for awhile. By this time lots of PC hardware already came out especially from Nvidia. Just like today my share would be MSI's N670GTX PE 2GD5/OC video card.
First of all lets talk about the GTX670 GPU chip. This GPU is the younger sibling of GTX680 which uses the same 28nm GK104 chip but with one disabled shader cluster/core.The reference or standard GPU clock is 915Mhz with a turbo boost of 980 and as for the memory is concerned, it has a 256bit memory bus connected to a 2GB GDDR5 memory with speed of 6008Mhz. Just like with any Kepler based architecture, the card would also have all the goodies like "Adaptive V-Sync", "AA TXAA (Temporal Super Sampling)", supports "DX11.1" and improved 3D Vision Surround.
Moving on, let's check out now what MSI did with their GTX670 SKU based video card. The card is under a new Series named "Power Edition" (series comparison table below) and it comes factory overclocked from GPU clock of 915MHz to 1020MHz and Turbo boost of 980Mhz to 1080Mhz. It also comes with the 4th version of Twin Frozr Thermal Cooling design with a theme color of Black and Blue which matches the color of MSI's midrange to high-end motherboards as well. The dual 8cm PWM fan based cooler are equipped with Propeller Fan Blades which draws air better and now has the so called "Dust Removal Technology", basically as you startup your PC the fan will rotate counter clockwise for 30 seconds clearing the dust from the cooling heatsink. Adding a finishing touch, MSI equipped the video card with their Military Class III components ensuring the best performance, efficiency, higher overclocks and durability.

  • Macbook Pro dark screen after disconnecting from Cinema Display

    Dear all,
    the issue I am having:
    - after disconnecting from Cinema display (having first put my Macbook Pro in "sleep" mode) I just ca't make the Macbook pro scren show anything....black display
    - but is it really asleep? NO!!! It just STILL believes it's connected to the Cinema Display
That's what I though was happening, so I thought: "if I now plug in the thunderbolt-to-VGA dongle that I use for the videoprojector then the screen might come back... and.... Voilá! It comes back, BUT starts flickering until in the end it just dissappears....
I can reproduce the error all the time. Worse than that: a reboot does not help at all.
Looks like there is an internal hardware switch that must be left "engaged" and then the Mac just believes it is connected to an External screen and sends the signal though the thuderbolt port instead of through the screen!!!
    WEIRD error/bug or whatever!!
I have no idea how to make this reach the Apple guys.... I tried to report a Bug but they asked me to join in as Apple developer which I just can't do (for working issues).
Can anyone tell me if they have had this problem, and whether Apple is taking care of it?
(this reminds me of an issue with an internal switch with the headphones in my old MacBook Pro.... after disconnecting the headphones, the internal switch was not being disengaged, so sound would NEVER come out as it was being sent to the headphones instead of to the speakers... Same problem here but with the Image??? :-((( )
    Thanks a lot.

Sometimes I experience the same after disconnecting my 24" display (in seldom cases, the mouse cursor is not painted correctly, as well).
Can you check - when it happens - if in System Profiler > Hardware > Graphic > Quartz Extreme is listed as 'supported'. I found it to be 'not supported' when the scrolling and display behaves strangly. Also the Menu Bar is not transparent any more.
Next to rebooting, logout and login again fixed the issue for me. But I am also looking for a better fix/explanation.

  • HP LP2465 24" Wide External Monitor Unrecognized?

I have a HP LP2465 24" Wide screen monitor. Similiar problem to ScottsMac message.
Setup: The monitor has two DVI inputs/outputs. I have a DVI adapter to VGA dongle. The DVI end is plugged into the monitor and the free end is a VGA connector. I'm using the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. The VGA adapter is plugged into the VGA endpoint coming from the monitor. The Mini-DVI adapter is than plugged into the MacBook. No signal recognized by the computer? The monitor goes to sleep.
Should I try a DVI to DVI cable (from monitor to mini-DVI to DVI connector)avoiding the VGA connection altogether?
The monitor works fine from an IBM Thinkpad to monitor (VGA(computer) to DVI(monitor). John

Problem resolved. I simply used a mini-DVI to DVI adapter instead of the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. For some reason the MacBook doesn't send a VGA signal? I plugged the mini-DVI adapter into the MacBook. The DVI end was joined to a male DVI adapter. The other end of the DVI adapter was plugged into the monitor (DVI connector). By making the whole link DVI and eliminating the VGA link the problem resolved.
