Displayport to DVI Adapter finds Generic Non-PNP Monitor

I have a 6 week old H8-1420T Envy C1U69AV#ABA, Windows 8 64bit, 1GB Radeon HD7670 and I am trying to connect two Dell 1905FP monitors. Each monitor works fine when connected to the DVI port. When I connect one monitor using a HP displayport to DVI dongle adapter, the system reports it as a Generic Non-PNP Monitor and the screen remains black. I tried the adapter on another system and it works fine.
I updated to the new "8.982.10.1800 Rev. A 3 Jan 2013" driver on the HP site but it didn't help. The AMD drivers will not install because apparently this is an ugly step-child video card, not a real AMD. If I knew that I wouldn't have purchased it with the system.
I have the original CD from the 1905FP when I bought them and it doesn't have a driver file on it (didn't need one with XP). When the monitors work, they are each reported as a 1905FP.
Anyone have any suggestions?
This question was solved.

You can make sure you have the newest AMD drivers by using these steps.  I have not had any issues updating the AMD driver using these steps on custom built and OEM systems.
I will be honest, I'm not certain if the driver will correct the issue but it is worth trying and having the newest driver may not hurt.
Let me know what happens.

  • Computer detecting generic non pnp monitor (that doesn't exist)

My computer keeps randomly (usually after a few hours of being on) detecting a third monitor. When I right-click and go to "Screen Resolution" the third screen (or second depending on if I have my second monitor, a Dynex television, plugged in via HDMI cable)
is detected but blank and I cannot make the system get rid of it.
It will get rid of it for a second and then it will come back, making that boo-doo, bud-dunk sounds (the same as wehn you plug in or unplug a usb device). I have tried reinstalling the latest drivers through "screen resolution"-"advanced settings"-"properties(for
both the monitor and the adapter)"-"install latest driver". I've also treid to install the drivers from the AMD website and the HP site. Nothing has worked.
I called my warranty people and they said to do the same thing, and when it didn't work they said to just reinstall windows. So I did that and it worked, for about two weeks. Then it happened again last night.
I have Radeon HD 6750 graphics card, dual core (Radeon HD 6620G for other half?)
I'm a tech noob so if you need more information please let me know and thanks anyone and everyone for their help :)

    Hi,
I suggest you uninstall the monitors in Device Manager, and then scan the hardware changes to see how it works.
Also, try to remove the display profiles for a test:
    1.
Click Start, and then type Color Management in the Start Search box.
    2.
    Click Color Management under Programs.
    3.
In the Color Management dialog box, click the Devices tab, and then click the display that is experiencing the problem. For example, click Display: Generic PnP Monitor.
    4.
Make sure that the Use my settings for this device check box is selected.
    5.
In the Profiles Associated with this Device list, remove all the profiles that are listed in the box. To remove a profile, select the profile, and then click Remove. When
this process is complete, the box will be empty and all the defective profiles will have been removed.
    6.
    Click Close.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter is actually DVI-D? *** Apple!

I just purchased a new MBP (and I love it), along with an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter. I figured whatever monitor I wanted to plug into, if it was VGA, I could just stick a DVI to VGA adapter on there. Turns out, this adapter only supports DVI-D (digital only). A little fact that Apple fails to mention in their product page.
    What a rip.
That said, does anyone know of a REAL MDP to DVI-I adapter? Do I need to buy the dual-link adapter?

They do say that it is for a "digital monitor, ... that includes a DVI connector."

    No.

If you are going to use a 30" DVI display. It's still DVI-D (but dual-link). It will also work with single-link DVI displays.
For a VGA display you need the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter

  • Mini Displayport to DVI Adapter Problem on Mid-2009 Macbook Pro

I have a new mid-2009 Macbook Pro hooked up to a 20" Samsung 2033sw LCD with a native 1600x900 resolution using a mini Displayport to DVI adapter that I bought off of EBay. No matter what I've tried I can't get anything to display on the external Samsung LCD higher than 1024x768. I tried switching between GPU's and that made no difference. Any ideas.?

    Michael, thanks for the reply;
When you open System Preferences/Displays does a second preference panel open up OK on the Samsung ?
Yes, but I can't see it unless I select 'gather displays'. Then it appears on the MBP LCD, and showing the correct resolution - 1600x900.
Is there an Options Tab visible under which you can check 'Overscan' ?
None that I can find. Only display and color tabs.
Is the Refresh Rate set to 60.0 Hertz
Yes, that is what it shows in Refresh Rate.
I also pulled out an older LG LCD that is fairly generic, .e.g. it has DVI in at 1280x1024. Same problem on that LCD ... nothing higher than 1024x768, but this time at 1280x1024 I get major noise and screen distortion. The displayed image is jumping all over the place, but at least there is something displayed.

  • 27: iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter quits working post-firmware

I iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter suddenly quit working after I installed Apple's latest iMac display firmware update. This is an Intel Core i5; the monitor is an LG Flatron 24" Wide, and when it powers up it says "no video input" and goes into power-saving mode. No amount of replugging cables helps, but the monitor works fine on other computers.
The Displays control panel just shows one monitor, and clicking Detect Displays does nothing.
I suspect Apple's Display Firmware Update. My installer log shows the following, but the problem only happened today after the latest update:
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.0
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/5/10 7:29 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
I have automatic updates disabled, but after each update I would see more firmware updates ready, but caution leads me to never install more than one of these at a time, and then to wait a while to see if anything bad happens. The odd thing is that the Display Update 1.0 seems to have been installed three times in this course of events. Alas, there appears to be no way to uninstall a firmware update.
Here is the System Profiler Graphics/Displays output:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)

    Online: Yes
    Built-In: Yes
    Connection Type: DisplayPort
    Display Connector:
    Status: No Display Connected
It says the Mac sees no display connected, and the display gets no video signal. Since the adapter is an active device (it has powered electronics to convert DisplayPort signals to DVI signals) I suppose it could have just coincidentally died. But that seems unlikely given that the thing worked perfectly just before the last firmware update.
Does anybody have similar experience, or better yet, a fix?

Unfortunately the Apple Knowledge Base does not give much information about this update. Such has how to tell if it has been successfully installed. I suspect that because it keeps recurring in the install log that it has not been installed successfully as yet. Are you receiving this update through Software Update? Can you locate the installer for this update? It maybe located in Apps/Utilities.
Some firmware update installations can be interrupted/corrupted by attached devices. If you find the update's installer on your iMac, I suggest that you detach all external devices from the iMac, use an Apple USB keyboard & mouse if available, follow the instructions carefully and install the update manually. If you do not locate the installer I suggest downloading manually from the link below and installing it.
The Knowledge Base article mentions that your iMac should also have a Graphics Firmware Update. I suggest that you download and install that as well.

  • Does Thunderbolt work with the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter?

I just ordered a new 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display to replace my Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro.  I've been using the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter to extend my screen to an older 20" Cinema Display.  From what I can find online, and I'm here asking for confirmation, I should still be able to use the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter with the new MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt port.  Correct?

still be able to use the Mini Displayport to DVI adapter with the new MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt port.  Correct?
    Yes.

  • Mini Displayport to DVI adapter problem

Using a mini displayport to dvi adapter results in a jumpy mouse and a delay on screen when typing text. I've searched for days, but couldn't find the answer. I am using an iMac 27" i7 8GB and as additional monitor a Philips 220WS.
    Can anybody help me?

I havent seen the text issue yet but I dont think I tried typing because I use the cpu with two screens for editing and I got frustrated and unplugged the second monitor. Ill try it and get back to you. Thanks for chiming in we need to get a solution to this as its one of the main features for me.
I wonder if we can call apple with this one as it seems to be a defect.

  • Ghost Display: 'Generic non-PNP Display'

Before I start talking about the problem I have Thinkpad T420s 4173-W1J (which has Intel HD + NVS4200) and I have never used it with any external displays prior to this issue:
A while ago I noticed a strange problem. If I let the computer enter sleep mode by itself (due to inactivity) and then woke it up, the built in display would be turned off and I had to use Fn+F7 and kind of work my way, blindly, to the right display output.
I figured this was because the Thinkpad thought there was a secondary display and sure enough the Device Manager and the screen-res settings in windows showed a 'Generic non-PNP Display'. I started to look around on the web for solutions as I wanted to bring this to an end asap.
-I started to uninstall drivers then reinstalling drivers. It didn't work!
-I tried uninstaling drivers, then installing the video drivers from Intel and Nvidia support sites. It didn't work!
Then I started to look at the hardware side of things...
-I plugged in my external display to the VGA and as I did so it replaced the non-PNP with PNP. I figured that there was something wrong with VGA port or one of the GPUs. This would probably suggest that the hardware thinks theres a display connected when there isn't. As such it cannot detect which display it is i.e. non-PNP. Then when I plug in an external display it finds a display on that same port, replacing the non-PNP display status.
-I read that this non-PNP phenomenon could be due to dust in the VGA. So I vacuumed it. It didn't help!
-I also read it could be due to electrical load on the port due to a faulty graphics unit. For this I need to send it in to get it fixed, but I did not give up yet...
-Lastly I heard it could be due to electricity caught up in one of the capacitators that the output used (or something like that). This was a thread about a similiar problem for a desktop and it was suggested that the person in the thread should disconnect his LCD from the PC and unplugg the powercords and let it rest for 5-10 min. I was desperate for a solution to my problem and so I figured I'd try something as similiar to this. I unplugged the power cord to my Thinkpad, removed the battery and waited 10 minutes. Sure enough when I booted up the 'Generic non-PNP Display' was gone!
I thought I had fixed it! I checked the Device manager several times that day and there was no ghost display visible. However, as I booted my Thinkpad the next morning, it was back... removing the battery and waiting 5 minutes fixes the issue as it did before. This is not a solution to the problem. I cannot remove the battery each night only to reseat it the next morning. Then I would never be able to use sleep mode.
I guess I should use my warranty to get my T420s fixed since I without doubt think this is a hardware issue. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
    T420s 4173-W1J
    i5-2520M // 8GB RAM // Intel 320s 160GB SSD // 1GB Nvidia N12P-NS2 // Intel 802.11agn // Bluetooth // 1Gb Ethernet // UltraNav Secure Chip // Fingerprint reader // Camera // Win7 Pro 64

I am too fond of my Samsung display so I wouldn't give up after you explained to me that I basically could end up with any of the other displays if I issued a repair.
So I kept on trying and figured out the following...
-Shutting down the computer, removing the battery, putting it back in a second later and booting 'fixes' the issue for the time being.
-Restarting the computer after the above is done, does not make the problem re-appear.
-However, shutting down the computer and booting it a second later does make the problem re-appear.
Now I know how to 'artificially' remove the problem and how to make it re-appear, which is good for testing purposes.
The following tests were made after making sure that the problem was existant in the previous boot...
-Booting with a VGA monitor connected finds the display (as it should). When disconnecting the monitor in windows it is not visible in anymore (as it should be). The ghost display does not appear in its place so this 'fixes' the problem until the Thinkpad is shut down and then started up again (without the monitor), at which point the problem has re-appeared.
-Entering any BIOS menu (F1, F8) before bootup without doing anything or changing any settings 'fixes' the problem until the next boot.
Strangely enough, what ended up fixing this permanently (won't know for sure until tomorrow morning) was a combination of doing the following...
-I pressed the Thinkvantage button. Went to the windows settings and pressed repair windows. After the files where loaded and it asked me to continue to choose a restore point I pressed cancel and rebooted. The problem is now non existant in windows. Before shutting down I turned off the 'Dynamic Brightness Control' in PowerManager. Now I can't reproduce the problem and I've even tried three times.
I don't know if it's the Magic Blue button or if it was the PowerManager settings (the latter being more plausible) but for now I am one happy fella.
A strange thing I noticed is that all the checkboxes for the 'Dynamic Brightness Controll' are still checked, even though the feature seem to be disabled since I the screen does not dim. I guess it's nothing to worry about...
EDIT: This is still not solved! Sometimes the ghost display is there, sometimes not...

  • Trouble with 30" HD Cinema Display using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I bought a new MacBook Pro and I am having trouble getting the full resolution to work with my 30" HD Cinema Display (purchased in 2007 max resolution 2560 x 1600) using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.
According to the specs page, http://support.apple.com/kb/SP581 , the max resolution of the HD external display is supported. Unfortunately the max that I can set it to is: 1280 x 800
Has anyone else had the same issue?
If this isn't resolved I'm likely going to exchange my MacBook Pro for one that can support this display.

So I went and bought the Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter as suggested and it seems to work great.
Now the problem that I have is when I open up Apple's DVD player, the screen is blank but I can still hear audio.
If I unplug the display, the movie will display properly. Rebooting with the display plugged in doesn't help either. I also deleted all the DVD players enc setting files so that they would re-initialize but no luck.
Any idea what this problem might be??

  • Mini-Displayport to DVI adapter not working, but Mini-Displayport to VGA and Thunderbolt work fine

Mini-Displayport to DVI adapter not working, but Mini-Displayport to VGA and Thunderbolt work fine.
This is a brand new MacBook Pro (15-inch, mid-2012) just received.  I suspect that this is a hardware problem as:
The mini-displayport to DVI adapter and the external monitor that I am utilizing connect and operate just fine using my older MacBook Pro (mid-2010) with the same OS.
The new MacBook Pro powers the external monitor with a mini-displayport to VGA adapater without issue.
The new MacBook Pro powers an Apple Thunderbolt display without issue.
Both MacBook Pro's are running OSX Lion 10.7.4.
The only combination which does not work is the mini-displayport to DVI adapater used in conjunction with the brand new MacBook Pro (mid-2012).
All adapters and components (mini-displayport adapters) are Apple retail adapter.
I have tried several external monitors, including my Dell U2412m.
When I connect the mini-displayport to DVI adapater to the new MacBook Pro (mid-2012), nothing happens. The external monitor reports "no signal" and attempts to go into sleep mode.  Using the "Detect displays" button has no effect, even when used multiple times.  Rebooting does not help, nor does resetting the SMC or PRAM.
Any other suggestions before I take it to the Genius Bar?

I turns out that the logic board of my MacBook Pro was faulty (despite being brand new).
I took it to the Apple Store, presented the problem, and one of the Tech's came to the same conclusion that I had -- hardware failure.  Phone support was no help in the matter (and even told me that what I was trying to do wasn't a supported option, which is rediculous).  However, the Genius Bar did take care of the problem, and my MacBook Pro was back to me with a replaced logic board within a few days.
    Hope that htis helps.

  • Does DVI-to-HDMI work with my Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter?

    Hi,
I have a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and was wondering if I get a DVI-to-HDMI, will I be able to get HDMI output?
If yes, should I get any specific DVI-to-HDMI adapter?
If yes, will it have sound with it?
    Thanks.

So which does the community prefer between Dr Bott DVIator and the Apple DVI to ADC?  I have the Apple but it is not working, as it is shutting the monitor down without even starting it (soft shut-down).   Is this a bad adapter or the result of "stacking" adapters?  I have read that it is more common to a bad adapter result.
    Thanks.

  • Does Mini Displayport to DVI adapter support analog VGA signal?

I'm just about to buy a macbook pro. Since the MDP (mini displayport) to DVI and MDP to VGA adapters are £20 a pop, I can only afford to get one. Obviously DVI is better in general, but VGA supports more older hardware, CRTs, and the spare VGA input on one of my displays (where the desktop uses the DVI).
What I'd like to know is does the MDP to DVI adapter also support the analog VGA signal on certain pins (like most physical desktop DVI ports do)? If it does, since I have about 3 or 4 DVI to VGA adapters lying around, I can get the MDP to DVI adapter and use the DVI to VGA adapters with it if necessary, but if it doesn't I might be better off getting the MDP to VGA...

No. Unlike DVI, which in the DVI-I configuration has both digital and analog pinouts, DisplayPort (and mini-DisplayPort) are purely digital. Mini-DP to DVI then DVI to VGA will not work. If you look carefully at the Apple Mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter, you'll notice it's a DVI-D connector - digital pins only.
The Apple mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter contains a digital-to-analog converter.
So, you'll have to choose. If you want VGA, get Apple's mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter.

    im running OSX 10.7.4

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.

  • New Mac Book Shuts Down when I plug in the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

I have a new 15" MacBook pro and every time I plug in the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, it shuts down. I installed the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Firmware Update (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl799) and it still shuts down. It shuts down whether I have a display/projector plugged in or not.
    Any suggestions???

Try turning the MBP off before you connect or disconnect an external monitor. I could be wrong but I do not believe that the DVI interface was designed to be a hot swap interface.

  • Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter does not recognize SGI-Saver on DVI (LCD)

I bought a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter for my new unibody 17" MacBookPro.
No dice! The lcd is not recognized, is not seen in the displays control panel, and LCD remains dark. This LCD works fine on the previous generation MacBook Pro when plugging into the DVI connector on that computer.
The Apple adapter seems not to recognize the DVI lcd panel. What's the fix? A firmware update perhaps?!?

The adapter works perfectly with a lower resolution Dell LCD panel. I'm hoping that Apple would have a firmware update to enable operation with the older generation LCD.
