Dissapearing Mail

Hello,
I'm fairly new to Mac Mail and I've been having a few problems with it. First of all I've noticed a few times when I check my email it says I have more new messages than I actually have. An example today was the mail icon said I had 6 new messages then when I opened up mail the 6 quickly turned into a 3 and the other 3 emails were gone before I could see what they were. The other problem is that I don't have a Junk Mail folder I read through some discussions and I didn't have a junk.mbox folder in my mail account so I created one, the other folders are labeled as .imapmbox, I have only an Inbox/Sent/Trash in the actual mail program. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi
This is not an answer but a continuation of the problem and I think I am having the same issue. In my case I have a folder in the Inbox for one account and it says that there are 37 messages. Yet when I open that inbox, I see nothing. I also have a trash folder that shows nothing. The only item that seems to suggest that these are different from any other folder where I can see the contents is that there is a "twistie" in front of the two folders that I cannot see the items. Maybe if I could discover what that twistie is and how to get rid of it that may solve my problem.

  • Wow! Mail dissapears, stores in wrong folder, wrong titles, ...

I am getting a very strange behaviour in mail.app since my update to 10.5.4. Parts of emails are stored in the drafts folder without me asking. Some mails will open with a different text from the title or header. Some mail will seemingly be sent but does not appear in the Sent folder...
I've reintiated the prefs file, rebuilt all the mailboxes. To no effect, I'm still getting the same behaviour erratically, it is not permanent, it appears very suddenly, then for no reason dissapears again. Could it be a ... (wolves crying) ...virus!?!?
    Please help.
    Mark

    Hello mark:
You can set aside a concern about a virus. There are NO documented viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
If I were you, I would download the combo updater, install it, and see if that fixes the problem. Sometimes things go wrong with either the download or the update itself.
I do see that you trashed the preference file and rebuilt the mailboxes - two things that I would have suggested.
If the above does not help, I would opt for an archive and install.

  • My mailserver is POP. I use outlook to read/answer may mails. I access to mails on iphone, as IMAP. Once read in outlook they dissapear from iphone. How can I save mails on iphone after reading them in outlook?

My mail account resides on a POP server at Hostway. I am reading my mails on my computer using MS outlook.
I have configured this mailbox as IMAP account on my iphone (IOS5). When my computer is switched off, I receive new mails on my iphone. Once I open my oulook inbox and read the mails, they dissapear from my iphone. Is there a way to keep them on my iphone, while keeping them on my computer as well?
    Thank for helping

WHat server address are you using on your Computer and on your Phone?
Have you also looked at the behaviour settings for your Outlook mailboxes, as far as when e-mails should be deleted from the server?

  • (Mac Mail) How to obtain Yahoo! Mail when: You're inbox dissapears or does not show after all settings seem perfectly in place.

    Hello everyone!
Note**: I am in no way attempting to illustrate how to get FREE email listing from Yahoo! Mail, I am only reciting what I have stumbled upon. I do not know if Yahoo! actually wants this to work in Mail. but it does, so if they didn't want it to work they will patch it or something. I recommend that you take advantage of their paid service(annual) which allows POP forwarding of emails quickly and withou any need for reconfiguration.
I hope this "fix" is not being rementioned or creates redundancy, however after hours of searching all sorts of foums(including the Apple forums ofcourse) I was unable to find a true fix. Simply put, I just got a brand new Macbook Air 13'' for Christmas 2011. I also bought a Macbook Pro 15'' back in late 2010. I was never able to get Yahoo! Mail configured even through methods of IMAP rather than POP or POP3. Oddly enough, on my Macbook Air and Pro, now, when I try to redo the Yahoo! settings, my Inbox would display messages for a matter of seconds and then the messages would dissapear. However, there was still a number next to my Yahoo! e-mail, accurately indicating how many unread messages I had. I fixed it like so:
    1) Go to www.yahoo.com-- Configure Yahoo! account via account settings to work off of IMAP rather than POP Forwarding. Do so by going into account options on the top right or left hand of your screen and clicking through the forwarding options until you see IMAP. Make sure you save your new settings! This is very simple and I feel requires no further explanation. If you become confused, let me know and I will go into detail then.
    2) Once your Yahoo! Mail account is IMAP simply go into the Mail application on OSX (Mac). On the top bar of the Mail pane click on the "Mail" option in between the Apple sign and File.  Then, Click on Preferences from that dropdown pane. When this window appears, Click on the "@" symbol that says "Accounts" right under it. This is in between General and RSS options. Under the left-hand list that says "Accounts", click on the "+" sign as opposed to the "-" sign you will see there. This will allow you to setup an account or additional accounts. A window then will appear with options:
    3) ****Make sure you ARE connected to the internet wirelessly or via ethernet for this part!****
---------- Full Name: (Enter Full Name Here)
---------- Email Address: (Type in full email address, e.g.: [email protected])
---------- Password: (Type in your password to your email account, this IS CASE SENSITIVE.)
    4) Now! Listen! (lol), hit create and let the mac show you the settings it has pinged back from the Yahoo! mail server. It should illustrate that your e-mail is an IMAP based email address etc. As long as the account is created with the IMAP configuration and Mail reads it as so, you have succeeded thus far.
    5) Critial Step here: Go into the Mail application on OSX (Mac). On the top bar of the Mail pane click on the "Mail" option in between the Apple sign and File.  Then, Click on Preferences from that dropdown pane. When this window appears, Click on the "@" symbol that says "Accounts" right under it. This is in between General and RSS options. Under the left-hand list that says "Accounts", click on the Yahoo! IMAP account. Close to the top of that page between the different Mail options and the account settings you will see three different bar pages: a) Account Information, b) Mailbox Behaviors and c) Advanced.
    6) Click on the Advanced tab. Do not touch anything on this page, except, IMAP Path Prefix. This is located in the middle of the Advanced page screen right above Port, where you will see |Port:   993   (Box IS checked for: USE SSL). In that IMAP Patch Prefix type the name of your Inbox(I say this because some people rename it in Yahoo!). Mine is simply "Inbox" so my configuration in Mail looks like so: | Imap Path Prefix:  Inbox |. After this, click on "General" or attempt to close the Mail options window and it will as you to save the new setting. Ofcourse, hit yes and click the Get Mail envelope and you will see your Inbox populate, assuming you have new mail.
What this means: Test your OUTGOING mail server by sending yourself an e-mail either from your Yahoo! Mail or from another email. Thus, this will allow you tot est your INCOMING email as was now reconfigured to IMAP by seeing if you actually receive the email.
Reason for doing so in this sequence: By letting Mail create the account it will properly import all of your mail folders you have in your Yahoo! Mail account. Obviously, your Inbox and Outbox as well as Sent and Trash folders will import but I have additional folders, for example, that also imported for putting financials or receipts into different folders for organization. Once these are populated naturally, by changing the IMAP Path Prefix you're telling the Mail application where to send your new emails. Atleast this is my understanding of it.
Unfortuntely, I am not an officially educated 'techie", however, I have been fiddling with computers over the last 20 years and have been training myself to become Apple expert, seing as I have decided to completely convert to Apple products. Apple is just reliable. This, to me, is priceless. I truly hope I have helped you and that I have saved hours of Youtube video watching as well as forum searching for many. Should you have any questions, FEEL FREE to ask! I love helping others, hense why I have made this post(my first Apple post). Happy Holidays everyone and enjoy!

What Mac Mail did was delete ALL inbox messages from my yahoo account, after one week from importing them to Mac Mail.
The Yahoo server did exactly what you Mail program told it to do.
Mail/Preferences/Account/Advanced - This setting is adjustable for each mail account.
I didn't know about this feature until it was too late. I have already unchecked it for future emails.
I was wondering if there is a way to retrieve these deleted messages back to my yahoo inbox.
Not Really, you could forward them to your account, after you've told your mail program not to delete the emails at all, but they will show up as being from you instead of the original sender. The originals at Yahoo have been dumped and probably purged. It would take an IT manager at Yahoo to manually replace the emails, not much chance of that.
I've already asked yahoo to "restore" my inbox to a day ago. That should help me with retrieving some of the messages back, I hope.
Also, I was wondering about the sync feature on the Mac Mail and what will actually happen if I use it. Does it apply to mail messages, or to address book and calendar entries?
The sync feature refers to IMAP email accounts like .Mac or .Me or an Imap gmail account. I didn't think Yahoo offered IMAP email accounts.
Apple's MobileMe membership will let you sync your Mail, AddressBook, Calender, personal website with iWeb, etc.
"MobileMe is a service that pushes new email, contacts, and calendar events over the air to all your devices. So your iPhone, Mac, and PC stay in perfect sync."
    http://www.apple.com/mobileme/
I wanted to use Mac Mail, see if I liked it or not, then decide to get a MobileMe account. However, this is still a side note, since my yahoo account is my main email client.
You seem to be very well informed, and I was wondering if I can ask you to clarify a point for me. Do you know how to archive the inbox in the Mac Mail?
And thank you for answering my queries.

  • TS3276 I get Apple Mail through having activated POP in gmail. Since a week, when I click on "Get Mail", after a delay I see brielfly flashing "Incoming message 70 etc." but it dissapears and no mails gets downloaded. How to proceed?

I get Apple Mail through having activated POP in gmail. Since a week, when I click on "Get Mail", after a delay I see brielfly flashing "Incoming message 70 or whathever the number in waiting is." and the green band extends to the end of the line in a fraction of a seconde, but then dissapears and no mails gets downloaded. It is not a matter of password etc.. that are all OK. Strangely, yesterdays, some email did come through after a few days of failure, but not anymore. Could it be related to hacking or something like that? Any thing I could try?
    I have OX 10.6.8.

  • Why my smart folders dissapear in mail when i close mail application in mountain lion?

Why my smart folders dissapear in mail when i close mail application in mountain lion?
    Please help!

My results jumped up from around 1000 to 10,000 when I did that.
I think this may have to do with having x11 and xcode installed.
In case anyone is interested, these are the folders I've had to exclude:
    User\Library\Developer
    System\Library\Frameworks
opt in the root folder of the HD (this is x11. You may have to Finder's 'go to folder' option to get to it.)
There was also Office stuff coming up which looks like it's from the system when you see it (the identities folder and the subfolder within the Office 2011 folder in Applications)
The combination of this stuff seemed to create the impression of more files from the System and Library folders were coming up than actually were.
In case anyone is still reading, the stuff *still* being thrown up that I'm aware of is
Mountain Lion screensavers from the System and Library folders.
PreferencePanes - System, PreferencePanes - User and PreferencePanes - Library folders, which each show up as individual results.
But, as you say, bispymusic, perhaps Apple has deigned that those folders appear in results. Thanks a lot for your help! Have a good one.

  • Mail Dissapears

It seems that after about 7 days all mail dissapears from one of my two .mac accounts. All settings are the same on both accounts so far as I can tell. In accounts preferences under mailbox behaviors I have all pull down menus set to "never" as it relates to deleting messages.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
    William

I would try resetting your monitor to the way it was before Mail went missing. At this point, move mail over to right by a few inches. Redo the monitor setting to your new setting and mail should now be visible.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Mails in Inbox dissapeared after  using "rule"

I set up some rules for moving mails to specific mail boxes. Sometimes it happens that a mail appears in the inbox instead of the specific mail box. Than I go to the "rules" preference, open the "rule" and than automatically the mail is moved to the mail box. Now, if i use the automatic redirect with the "rules" preference not only the specific mail is moved to the mail box, all other mails in the inbox dissapeared. They are deleted!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Michael. You're welcome.
Aside from whatever other problems you may have, I have the feeling that you haven't understood what I was trying to tell you in my previous post. What this particular rule does is irrelevant if you also have other rules and keep telling Mail to apply all of them every time you modify any of them...

  • Mail accounts and messages have dissapeared

    Hi there,
I logged into mail today to find that all my messages have just dissapeared along with the two mail account folders I use. I have just upgraded from tiger to leopard and had an initial problem which was rectified by moving the two .plist files and repalcing them and had been working fine for the last two weeks.
The only thing I have done was change the Junk mail rules to put junk mail in a seperate folder. Have tried moving the .plist files again but no luck with that.
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Cheers
    LB

I opened removed all the files under this folder in Finder: your account name/Library/Mail/Bundles
and guess what? i can create the old accounts back in Mail again, and of course after relaunching the Mail, the accounts are still there!
    Hope this helps!
    Good luck!

  • Mails stored as drafts are dissapearing after 4 secs.

    Hi,
I hope that I am not off topic here.
I am used to mail - I am not interested in changing to another non-apple client...
Since the latest security update for 10.3.9
i am having issues with my mail program 1.3.11 (v622/623).
Many users are reporting issues with indexing function, this works fine here...
Suddenly when trying to get new mail it says that there is a problem with opening the inbox. (propose a protected openening/quit/...)
I chose always quit. After a re-launch I usually am fine again. This issue returns from day to day and is really annoying.
Second issue is that stored mails in the draft box are dissapearing after 4 seconds. This is happening each time I open the mail program. The drafts re-appear when I am saving a new draft, but they are dissapearing in the same way when I restart mail after a quit.
I trashed all my default mboxes.
This won't help. I rebuilded all boxes - this won't help either.
So, any help is very appreciated.
    Thanks, Michael
    the draft mbox:
    tableofcontents 8KB
    mbox 4KB
    content_index 4KB

    Hi Donald,
thanks for your attempts helping me out of this mess.
    I checked all my settings.
    I created a new account.
    The dissapearing won't go away.
From time to time, when switching from inbox to sent box or trash
I am getting a message window:
Das Postfach „~/Library/Mail/[email protected]/Drafts.mbox“ wird zur Zeit von „xxx xxx“ auf dem Server „xxxuserxxx.local“ benutzt. Wenn Sie ein Postfach öffnen, das bereits benutzt wird, beschädigen Sie es möglicherweise.
schreibgeschützt öffnen or beenden or dennoch öffnen
    (Sorry, this is German!)
In English it would be something like that:
The Postbox „~/Library/Mail/[email protected]/Drafts.mbox“ is now used by „xxx xxx“ on the server „xxxuserxxx.local“. Opening a postbox which is already open could damage this.
    Three options:
protected opening or quit or opening in any case
But I have another partition with a 10.3.9 running (without that sec. updates).
There is mail 1.3.11 (v622) active - it is running normal without any issues.
So I am reckoning that the newer version v622/623 is instable here....
Would it be recommended to delete a few plist files? Which ones.
(it is not a big issue for me to fill out the forms on a restart)
    Greetings
    Michael

I have an iPhone 4s running iOS 5.0.1 and my received mail dissapears shortly after receiving.

It is a POP account which is also on my iPad and my iMAC.  All my accounts are set to me manually deleting email.  The iMAC deletes off server while the others do not.  This did not happen on my 3gs phone running iOS 5.0.1.  It was set to SMTP and MAIL.  When I set up the accounts on my 4s it automatically set the to mobile.
    example
    old system (3gs)
    mail.example.net
    smtp.example.net
    new system (4s)
    Both mobile.example.net
Thats the only visual difference I see.

  • Unusual problem, my mail in inbox dissapears!

    Hi,
Just got an new Mac Mini. Imported everything automatically from my old G4 onto it. But....
My Mail Inbox is acting strange. ALL THE OTHE MAILBOXES ARE FINE, but the inbox shows I only have 91 messages when I used to have around 1000!!
On top of this, a random selction of messages in (and only in) the inbox don't display and instead show in italics something along the lines of "message cannot be displayed as it cannot be downloaded until account is taken online" or something along those lines.
The thing is, the account IS online and is working fine in all other aspecs. It is a POP3 account.
I have tried re-importing manually. No luck.
ANY IDEAS ANYONE? I NEED MY MAIL BACK!!!!
    Thanks

    Hi RedHavoc.
Not sure what makes you think this is an unusual problem. Actually, it's quite common. The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
In particular, you may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in that thread) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON'T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problems:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn't need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-XXXXXX folder to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn't work as expected. If you've been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account's Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that's not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that's on the Desktop. Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move to the account's Inbox the messages that Mail failed to convert properly, and delete those that did get through and, hence, are duplicates now.
The following collection of AppleScripts has a Remove Duplicates script that can be useful for removing duplicate messages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
If all is well and you're not missing anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Some new mails appear then dissapear from inbox

Something is screwy with my mac.com mail.
Most mail is fine but sometimes a mail pops up in the inbox for about 5 seconds then disappears. It's not even on webmail if I check there. It is nowhere, just gone!
For example I was trying to get my papajohns password reminder and everytime I hit send reminder then check my mail, it pops in there and I double click it as quick as I can and it opens for less than a second and then vanishes completely.
This has just happened with my register.com domain reminder and I nearly lost the domain. So it is urgent that I figure out what is going on. Thanks

    HI Chris,
From the Mac Mail Menu Bar click Mail/Preferences.
Make note of all your preferences under each tab then close the Mail application.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move "com.apple.mail.plist" to the Trash.
Restart your Mac and see if that helped.

    Hi Ella...
The actual mail accounts aren't stored on an install disc.
From the Mail menu bar top of your screen click Mail > Preferences then select the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
You can setup your accounts from there.
If you accidentally deleted the Mail app, you can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
