Dissolves Flicker

Hello,
I've been editing Red footage brought in through Log & Transfer at 23.98 and 2048 x 1152, ProRes HQ. The footage looks great and plays in the timeline without rendering. However, my dissolves seem to flicker, especially if they go between bright shots and dark or contrasty ones. Fades to and from black are the worst. Rendering doesn't make any difference. When I move through the dissolve a frame at a time, it looks like compression-related bands of color are causing the perception of flicker.
Any ideas of ways around this? Is it possible that this is the best I can get without going to uncompressed?
Thanks,
Mike Yonts

Some additional information--I don't really see the flickering effect on long--maybe two-second-- dissolves. Is it possible that this is an effect of flat screen monitors, that they can't react fast enough?

  • Flicker on subject from LCD projector

    Hi all,
Bit of a strange one here:
I have just finished shooting a corporate presentation evening where the speakers got up and spoke at a lectern. All very simple stuff. Off to one side was a screen showing slides from a projector mounted on the ceiling.
I wasn't showing the screen in the shot, just the person speaking. The plan was (because of the different light levels between speaker and screen) to insert the slides over the top of each presentation in the edit, dissolving backward and forward between speaker and slides whenever suitable.
Anyway, I noticed something that I had never had to deal with before: there was a flicker on the person's face on the side where the light from the screen was coming from. In other words, the light falling on the person's face coming from the screen was flickering.
I didn't see this in the setup (there were some slides showing then but darker ones not throwing as much light) so once the presentation started, it was really too late to start playing with shutter speeds to try and stop it, so I shot the whole event with this flicker. Annoying.
Now I admit I have never shot anything before with one of the newer types of projectors...obviously there is an issue with strobing like with shooting some computer screens (and, of course I will be aware of this in the future), however, I was wondering if there is anyway to at least REDUCE the flickering in Post.
    Thanks!

    Duhh!
Just tried the Flicker Filter in FCP and set it to MAX. Fixed about 80% of the problem.
Is there something better/more effective? (Although I should be pleased I got this far!)

  • Transitions flicker and flash when exported

Most of my clips have movement to them. The dissolve transitions have the green bar above them. After rendering these simple dissolve transitions in Final Cut, everything looks great. Playing within the program works perfectly. After "Export Movie" these same transitions flicker and flash and some of the clips end up with dark lines through them. I have tried flicker filter with inconsistent success. I have tried changing the length of the dissolve transition with inconsistent success. Any thoughts?
Thanks for any help that can be given.

I think I solved one issue. My still images were way to high resolution. I didn't think that could even be a problem. Also, two were tiff images. Converting them to jpg solved their problems. I turned off the field dominance which cleared up one of the dissolves that had a filter applied. I am still getting some jerky dissolves but at least they do not flash.
As for the codec, It looks like it is the HDV 1080i60. Where and/or how do I change the default Quicktime render from RGB to YUV or vice a versa.

  • Cross Dissolved Motioned Slideshow Image "Jumpy"

I am working on a slideshow, and as I've done in the past, followed Tom Wolsky's Motion Control suggestions. ( http://www.fcpbook.com/MotionControl_inFCE.html ) The motion on the pictures looks great - except during the cross dissolve transitions. The image becomes "jumpy," kinda like when you import VHS video. The filters I've tried are: De-interlace, Flicker Filter and Stop Motion Blur, and they didn't help.
The photos are scanned jpg images at 400dpi. If I remove the motion, the pictures look fine with the cross dissolve transition.
I have exported the video and using iDVD made a movie, hoping it just looked that way on my monitor. Still jumpy on my sweet standard definition TV.
Render Control framerate and resolution are at full 100%. And this is just a standard definition sequence.
I need this for a wedding for a friend for next Saturday, so I'm sweating here a little. Slideshows like this have always worked for me in the past. Am I missing something?
    Dave

David - They are all checked, and then running the render again doesn't render anything new.
Searching around Google, I found this "solution" which appears to work. It's tedious, and I'm having trouble believing that everyone else can add motion and transitions, and it works fine. Or do other people really have to do this when keyframing:
    (excerpt from http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/967086#967094)
+If you re-position graphics or any video image in FCP, make SURE the VERTICAL setting for each KEY-FRAME (start, stop or hold) is always a EVEN INTEGER (Even Whole Number). Examples: 4, not 3 / -144, not -143.27 / 336, not 335.62 / 12 not 11.+
+The positioning settings/info (as well as many other settings) are found under the "Motion" tab in the Viewer.+
+Vertical position is the number in the RIGHT window in the area called "Center" (the horizontal position is displayed in the LEFT window).+

  • Flicker again

Hi all ... a couple of questions which if you don't mind I've also posted on the wonderful creative cow site. Believe me I've really searched and read as much as I can but can't find information that relates to this problem.
Q1. when allowing DVDSP to encode do I have to go into compressor to change any settings (as I understand DVDSP uses compressor) or do I make all the setups in DVDSP prefs ?
Q2. I want to make a really simple DVD no menus nothing. It's a sequence of stills with zooms and stuff rendered out of After Effects 720x576 Pal, NO Fields, 4 minutes long, animation codec it looks perfect played in Qtime but when I import it into DVDSP and build and burn it looks like crap, field issues on playback both on my Mac using DVD player, and on a tv.
Q3. Does the 'automatic' setting in prefs in DVDSP work with progressive or is it treating a fieldless Qtime as upper or lower. I was led to believe that modern DVD players were happy with progressive and I thought my Mac would play it fine. It really looks as though there are fields being introduced somewhere ! .... why isn't there a 'No fields' button
I got slight improvement bu adding 1 pixel vertical blur in After Effects but why should this be needed, let's face it the quality is pretty poor anyway ... adding blur seems crazy.
Please be assured I'm pretty sure I have all the basic settings in DVDSP correct, those I can find easily anyway and have tried all variations upper/lower etc etc ... I'm on to my 16th coaster now and am getting stressed.
Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction ... best regards Roger

    Hi all...
Just entered to post my own flicker problem. Like this person I am responding to, I have four terrible flickers. The 7 minute video was created in FCP. They are many stills, all with dissolves and a few zooms.
Like this person I have tried exporting from FCP with different field dominances, have appliced flicker filters, etc. The flicker does not appear in QT after export, can not be seen on the computer screen, but is very evident on TV played with a DVD player. There also seems to be a difference in flat screen LCD and older TVs.
Like the above writer, I have done about 20 exports, some taking up to 9 hours for the export. And have made 10 or so coasters. All have the same flicker.
Help, please. I am also going crazy and the client is hysterical!

  • 2005fpw via DVI: very slight flicker and annoying sound

I might just be paranoid, but ...
    1) Does anyone using a Dell 2005fpw with the Mac Mini via DVI sometimes see the screen flicker ever so slightly? It's not so much a flicker as a pulse (screen gets a tiny bit brighter, then back to "normal" again). It usually happens only when the monitor wakes from sleep, and goes away after a few seconds, or sometimes a restart will do the trick (thus maybe a video card problem?).
    2) Also, do you notice a brief buzzing sound (such as when you turn on a TV) when the monitor comes out of sleep? I just never knew an LCD to make that sound.
    3) Has anyone yet to find a way to dim the backlight (not only for a darker screen, but to save on backlight life as well)?
    Thanks for any help.

    1) No. Sounds like you could have an electronic component problem or one that is out of tolerance range. Could be as simple as a bad ballast capacitor on the inverter PCB. If it annoys you to no end you could do a warranty swap. But if not I usually recommend against such swaps as you get a refurbished monitor in exchange which could have a separate problem lurking in the background waiting to rear its head down the road.
I swapped a 2001FP for bad pixels and got a zero bad pixel refurbished unit in exchange, but the analogue VGA driver was faulty. Not a problem because I drive it through the DVI connector. This monitor strangely enough only on the PC will exhibit the screen blanking problem which is a faulty cap on the circuit board that needs replacing. I can use the custom Nvidia settings to back the frequency down to eliminate the symptoms on the PC. Strangely enough when my mini is driving that monitor it doesn't exhibit the error. The minis electrical levels through the DVI port must be different.
    2) No. This is also what makes me believe you just got one off the line with a out of spec or faulty component. Again, is this a critical problem for you is the ultimate question.
    3) You have a backlight setting which is not very useful as far as the dynamic range of values. More can be done in the menu system by using User Defined R,G,B colour values and bring them down, this will give you the dimming power you are most likely searching for.
There are speciality LCD repair shops that do mostly laptop work that have a lot of experience fixing the various manufacturing problems and some are skilled enough to dissolve a heavily scratched plastic coating off the LCD matrix and float on a new plastic coating for you. I would recommend talking to them if you really love your monitor and/or don't want to go the risk of refurbed unit exchange route.

  • Flicker-shimmer solved

I think I've solved the vexing flicker-shimmer problem that I occasionally noted when creating a picture slide show with FCP. The cross dissolve transitions would sometimes expose a "jittery" picture thought to be a problem with interlacing, etc. What I've done is the following: Arrange all pictures in their final length and sequence without transitions. Select the entire grouping. Then go to Effects, Video Filters, Image Stabilization. Render the grouping. Then add the transitions and render again. You will notice the rendering takes longer, but the end result is a much more stable and ficker free slide show. I seemed to work for me.

So I spent the day working on this, believe it or not, making a bit of a science project out of it. I was able to resolve the same problem by just stripping the slides down, removing my filters and transitions. Then I tried the gentleman's solution here, using the stabilizer, which resolved the bad transition issues but still left me with some shaky slides. I stripped them down again, still with the stabilizer on all, and this time added de-interlace filters for the ones from faster moving footage, rendered, added the transitions, rendered again. This looked quite good on the tv. Finally, I tried another round, this time stripping it all back, removing even the Stabilizer filter, and added just the De-Interlace filter where needed, (plus the basic border filter stripped back to just one frame line to clean the edges). Render. Then add the transitions. Rerender. This looked just fine as well, and spared me the sluggish render time when putting transitions over "stabilized" slides.
So it appears that the solution to the shaky transitions was more about the order in which the filters are applied, rather than the Stabilizer filter per se. So long as the filter is applied and rendered before the transitions are applied and rerendered, it turns out ok--the stabilizer isn't the key, but the order. Thanks for your solution, it put me on the path to mine!

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro Screen Flicker Pixel Seizure

Not sure how else to describe the problem, but I hope the title helps!
I have a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro. I noticed in the last month or so, my screen would flicker. But not the entire screen. Just certain areas, like the pixels would jump/lag, as if it it would jump to the correct position. I don't know what's the word for it: glitter, pixel, flicker, seizure. I mean, that what it looks like. It actually hurts my eyes.
I don't know what could be the problem or if anyone knows what's going on. It's just certain pixels (random on the screen, but usually right in the middle) that get "stuck" and half a second later, jump. Not sure what the proper word is, but if anyone could identify it, that'll be great.
Safari, Chrome, and Word are the applications I use, and I've seen it all three programs. It's becoming a lot more noticeable and frequent now, especially if I switch programs or if I'm loading a new page.
The MBP is a tank, but I've been considering buying a new MacBook, preferably the Air, until this MBP kicks it, so if anyone has estimation on its shelf life, that'll be great (My 2005 Powerbook G4 barely made it through 4 years!). The warranty on the MBP just expired last year.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate any insight on the issue.

Curiously, I don't have that option. It only gives me the option to disable Automatic graphics switching where it should give the better battery life or higher performance options. Do I have something disabled that gets rid of that option? It's the same under the Battery or Power Adapter options.
I'm going to take it to a genius but I'm wondering from reading other forums that maybe one of my RAM slots is bad. I want to have a play but will the genius know if I've opened it up and then possibly refuse it? If it is bad RAM then I can fix that myself without having to travel 70 miles to my nearest Apple Store. Is there a seal that I would break that would give away the fact that I've opened it up?
Thanks for the advice so far.

  • Mini-DVI to VGA flicker with Snow Leopard and 2nd monitor

I have a 24" iMac (fall 2007) and recently purchased a 26" Vizio (VMM26F10I) and connected it as a 2bd monitor for my iMac using the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter Apple sells.
The new monitor will flicker now and then and some times will go to no signal. I have to change resolutions to something else and then back to standard setting to get it to come back or unplug adapter and plug back in.
Is there a fix for this?

26" VGA...? Which resolution/frequency? Have you tried a fresh cable with clean connectors, etc....
What did Vizio say when you contacted them with this question about your new purchase?

  • Radeon 9600TX + Xorg 1.6.1.901: Disturbing Flicker

Hi! I try to setup a Radeon 9600 TX (R300 Chip) with Xorg 1.6.1.901 and xf86-video-ati. I want to use 2D + 3D acceleration. This is a new system setup using XFCE. (I intend to add compiz later.)
Acceleration for 3D is present + ok. Window resizing is rather choppy but acceptable. But I see a disturbing flicker when logged into X, as if waves were running down the screen horizontally. This is very inconvenient and hurts the eyes after a short time. Also the font in the VCs is not displayed in sharp edges but I do not know if this is interrelated (or erroneous).
I would like to keep the xorg.conf minimal. Since the DDC/EDID data that shows up in the log is correct, I did not add any ModeLines or mode setup. The log shows that xorg makes all decisions right (how it seems to me).
There are loads of posts about ati issues but I did not find anything that helped me solving my problem. Perhaps someone can help? Thanks in advance.

First I tried to force the monitor into 1280x1024@75 mode which does not show the flicker. In three horizontal areas in the screen, the display was very fuzzy. So I had to decide whether use 60Hz mode with the flicker problem or use 75 Hz mode with the fuzzyness problem.
I tried the first alternative by ignoring the EDID data and force the display mode but I didn't succeed with solving the fuzzyness problem. So I decided to go back to 60 Hz mode and try to solve the flicker problem. (I already tried 'Option "Flicker"  "false" - no effect!) I have no more ideas.

  • Non-functioning cross-dissolves with FCP 5.1 on intel

I am having trouble with FCP 5.1 running on my macbook. My cross dissolves work when used between two clips but as a fade to black, it doesn't work, or rarely does. I have 8 hours to finish this project to be showed at a wedding reception tomorrow. I've tried trashing the prefs and it did nothing, i emptied all my render files, checked for updates and nothing makes a difference. Please help, I'm runnng out of time.
    Patrick

    Thanks for trying...
Very strange...and not discounting your proficiency with FCP.
When you place the dissolve end on edit, the dissolve shows up on the end of the clip? but then the clip never dissolves to black?
Yes, the dissolve will show up on the end of the clip, but it plays back as if it is not there. This happens whether it is rendered or not. If I use a cross dissolve between two clips, it plays back perfectly. 'Some' of the clips will dissolve to black but the majority play back as though the transition is not there.
Any chance you're working with a 'favorite' dissolve that may have it's begin/end parameters adjusted?
Tried that and went back and got the original transition and made sure everything was set how it should be. I thought for sure it owuld be the prefs, but no such luck.
Any chance you've got your video layers scrolled downwards and there's a clip on a lower track?
No, I have made sure there is only one track with nothing underneath.
Are any of these clips nested?
    Nope.
    Thanks for trying though.

  • IPAD 4 screen flicker in App store as well as browsing via safari and vdownloader. I tried restore and reset, but still the same...

    Hi everyone,
I just have my new Ipad4 last January 27, I noticed that while downloading a certain Apps in App Store then scrolling to look for more application, my screen would flicker like flashing or something blinking on it. I don't know what happened, why is it like that? Is it somewhat connected with hardware problem or does Ios 6 version still have a bug? I've tried using safari and other video downloader like vdownloader and I tried searching in youtube, still the same dilemma, it flicker also while browsing some video. Is it hardware problem? I already reset and restore my IPAD thou its a new one still the same dilemma happened again. What should I do? It was a gift for me and I'm really worried about it. Hope you could help me regarding it. Thank you so much.

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • SmoothGraphMarkers=True does not stop Graph Cursor Flicker

I have a xy graph where the cursor labels flicker every time the graph is updated.  I have tried setting the smoothGraphMarkers=True
switch in the Labview.ini file but it does not make any difference.  I have the smoothupdates graph attribute set to true and have experimented with disabling graphic card acceleration.  Nothing seems to help.  I have been told that this started to happen when we recompiled the application from LV8.0 to LV8.2.  BTW, there are not any graph property nodes in the loop that could be causing a refresh.  Thanks.

    sachsm,
Are you also setting the Cursor.Allow Drag property of each cursor to FALSE?  This can done by either using a property node or by right clicking on the cursor and unchecking Attributes»Allow Drag.
Without this setting cursors are redrawn at every update just in case they have been moved.  By disabling the ability to move them along with the other settings you have already mentioned LabVIEW is able to render the cursors as part of the background bitmap and then update the screen all at once.

  • Mac mini display is flicking via HDMI to DVI adapter and DVI cable

i have received mac mini server (mid 2011) recently. mac mini is connecting the display via HDMI port using DVI cable with a HDMI to DVI adapter.
the display shows constant flicking. white dots/lines show randomly. it is like those signal noise when watching analog TV.
the same display works fine and well with macbook pro (early 2008) via DVI port.
    please help. please advise.

So you know the display is working.
It seems to me you have a few possible problems.
    1 HDMI-DVI cable is bad
    2 DVI-cable is bad
3 Connections between cables or computer or monitor are bad.
4 HDMI port on the computer is bad.
I assume you've tried #3, and re-connected cables and wiggled inputs.  So then try replacing 1 and then replacing 2 which are cheaper fixes than replacing/fixing 4.........
FYI, I'm connect my mac mini using the same setup you describe, with no issues....also inspect the cable ends carefully to look for any problems.

  • 13" MacBook Pro - Screen Flicker / Windows 7 Bootcamp

I have a 13" MackBook Pro with Retina display that I purchased last December (8 months old).  I am running Windows 7 in Bootcamp and the last few months the screen flickers on occasion (becoming more frequent).  I launched the Mac OS to ensure I have the latest updates and I believe I do (nothing new to install within the Mac OS).  Majority of the time I'm hooked up to an external monitor / lid is closed, but obviously that is a challenge when traveling.
I did do some searches and see other posts around screen flicker issues, but those appear to be on the Mac OS side.  What is odd about my scenario is that it only seems to appear on the Windows 7 side.  I can't seem to find a fix for this / really would hate to have to reload the machine.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my brand new 15" MBP right now.
The only problem I'm having is the USB controller issue that is reported in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2411685&start=30&tstart=0
I ran the Boot Camp assistant, made the partition, rebooted with my 7 DVD, formatted the partition, performed a clean installation, & then installed the drivers from the OSX DVD when Windows booted the first time.
Replaced the NVIDIA drivers with the latest Verde release. 258.96notebook_winvista_win7_64bit_internationalwhql.exe
Everything seems to be running just fine at this point.
