Dissolves with Motion'd Stills

I'm having trouble getting cross dissolves to work when I try to use them between clips that come back in from Motion, ie 2 second stills with New Camera>Behavior>Basic Motion>Move applied. Just can't seem to figure it out. I'm using a freshly installed Studio 2, an upgrade from 1.
Thanks!

It works, looks nice, but seems not the proper way to do it in the New Age.
The reasons I use handles on the .motn:
1. Give me some room to change my mind later. I need more time for movement? I need more time for an effect to resolve? I just open in editor and make some changes.
2. Allow the thing to be slipped within FCP.
I almost always use separate stacked tracks with this kind of assembly. But not because it's the olden way of doing things. It offers the most flexibility and, sad to say, whoever I'm usually editing with simply cannot grasp the paradigm of the interface where overlapped clips are on the same track.

  • Still image with motion has flicker pulsating problem

    I use FCP 5.0.4
I have read the many threads about this subject and am still not able to succeed in getting rid of the flicker/pulsating in a still image with motion.
I would say about 25% of the stills with motion have the jitters; all the rest look great.
The first thing I tried was
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Field Shift:none
    as well as
Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter min, med, and max.
Maybe 5% were corrected with this, but the other 20% still had the jitters even after using a combination of the above or by themselves.
I just burned a test DVD using a variety of the persistently jittery stills from my current project and although the jitters change a bit, they were still there so all of these failed:
    1. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Upper (odd)
    2. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter minimal
    3. Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace Flicker Filter max
    4. Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
    5. Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    6. All the tricks together which means
Effects:Video Filters:Video:De-interlace set at Upper (odd)
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Flicker Filter max
    Effects:Video Filters:Video:Shift Fields: none
    Effects:Video Filters:Color Correction:Broadcast Safe conservative 115
I know this issue has been kicked around a lot and i know some folks are not happy that it has to be kicked around at all. But I am doing something wrong because my DVDs look very un-PRO. Would anyone like to talk me through this nightmare preferably with as many details as possible since I am obviously missing something critical.
    Thanks in advance.

There is no 'secret formula'. It just takes thinking through the issues.
    1. Set the image size for each image that makes sense within the context of your project. Going significantly larger than the displayed area of that image (including movement) is just asking FCP to do additional work to resize the image. FCP is less sophisticated at resizing images than Photoshop. Use Photoshop and your planning of the movie to get the images to the appropriate size.
    2. Wasted effort and totally irrelevant- you could set it to 7200 dpi if it makes you feel better.
    3. Good idea - be sure to knock down areas of pure or very bright white. These are the elements that will give you the most trouble.
    4. Don't do this unless you want to throw away HALF the picture information. Deinterlace deletes half the picture and then photoshop recreates it through interpolation of the remaining half of the picture. Why do this?
    5. Make your determination based on what works. If you have properly exposed and sized the material, the need to blur is greatly reduced. ONLY do it on the images that need it. Why degrade every image if you do not need to do so?
    6. See number 5
    7. Lay out your time line early, view the work on an external broadcast monitor and only mess about with the images that require it.
In the psycho business they have term for much of the referenced post - it's called superstitious behavior. Basically it comes down to "It worked before so we recommend it to everyone without regard to their situation" ... here's another example:
Many years ago in my architecture practice, we had one of the early 512k macs (upgraded from the 128k!) I needed to show one of the interns how to create a project budget spread sheet in Excel. Inadvertently I clicked on Word, said "oops", closed it and opened Excel and we went to work.
A week later I was walking by the computer and overheard the same intern explaining how to work with Excel to another architect. "First you open Word, close it, THEN you open Excel", she explained. When asked by her 'trainee', why do you have to open Word first, wouldn't it just be easier to simply open Excel? Her answer was just perfect, "Well, it works every time, what's wrong with that?" so it goes ...
    good luck with your project.

  • Motion on stills... with a twist

I've read the posts about "motion on stills" (the "Ken Burns" effect) and found Shane's tutorial the most helpful. I have an added twist that I'm trying to figure out.
I'm making video billboards for a real estate company. I've made the billboards in Photoshop and imported them into FCP. The billboards have the company name, address, etc. and a picture of the agent in the bottom right corner. What I'm trying to accomplish is having a smaller box in the upper right area which takes up around 25% of the screen. In that box I want to use the stills with the motion effect. The way that I figured out is to make the effect (the way Shane shows) in a seperate sequence, exporting it out as a .mov, shrinking it down to 25% and using that in my main sequence.
    Two questions...
    1. Is there a better way to do this?
    2. If not, what is the best video format to export my motion clip as? .mov as I've been using or another format? Which would look the best?
    Thanks for your help.

The way that I figured out is to make the
effect (the way Shane shows) in a seperate sequence,
exporting it out as a .mov, shrinking it down to 25%
and using that in my main sequence.
Why export when you have unlimited layers to work with? You can either layer all of your media in one sequence, or if you'd like to keep part of your composite separated into its own sequence, you can simply nest that sequence in your main sequence. Avoiding an export saves time and keeps the sequence contents fully tweakable.

  • Premiere Pro CS 5.5 can't do a simple cross dissolve with MPE enabled?

When adding cross dissolves to a project that I'm working on, I've come across an odd problem. I say odd because this should be dirt simple, but Adobe seems to have messed this up. Please advise on any solution or work around, or perhaps simply see if you can recreate the issue so we can get Adobe to fix this.
    Problem:
Cross dissolves transitions don't seem to work consistently in cs 5.5. Note: I know how transitions work, and I'm not doing something stupid like trying to apply a transition to a cut without actually removing any video between the two clips (assuming the clips came from the same source video.). I'm able to recreate this issue on two different systems with premiere pro cs 5.5 by doing the follwing:
Create a new project and and sequence with the default settings.
Enable the Mercury Playback Engine if it isn't already enabled.
I import the Wildlife.wmv video that comes default with Windows 7 systems.
Drop it the video into the sequence.
Ripple delete about a 2 second section of the video. be sure to do this in the first half of the video, and make sure the the video changes the scene during this period so that you will notice the cross dissolve transition when it is applied.
Apply the default cross dissolve transition to the edit.
Review the edit. For my test, this edit always seems to work fine.
This is a screen capture of the working cross dissolve transition.
Now let me show you what happens when I do a similar edit somewhere in the second half of the video clip.
As you can see, for the duration of the transition, only the clip to the left is shown. At the end of the transition effect the program out preview jumps to displaying the clip to the right. There is no transition.
    Additional notes:
This second transition works fine with MPE disabled, but because if of my other problem http://forums.adobe.com/message/3725642 that I have with MPE disable it is not a viable work around.
    Help?
    -Ted

I too am experiencing this issue.  AVCHD footage, GPU Acceleration, trying to apply a cross dissolve, and instead it randomly seems to see it as a simple cut.  The Cross Dissolve is simply ignored... Adjusting the footage length, removing the CDissolve, re-rendering, etc. have no effect.  For whatever reason, in that specific location on the timeline, a cross dissolve with GPU acceleration is impossible.  Yet, in other sections of the timeline, it is just fine.
(The Fast Blur trick mentioned above worked (Thank you!) however, when I changed my playback resolution on the screen display, that broke the fix.  Deleting the fast blur, and applying it to the clip on the other side of the cross dissolve, re-enabled the work around)
I also see an issue when a clip changes in the timeline, (cut from one piece of footage, to another) the video will begin to studder, dropping frames.  Framerate seems to drop to about 2fps.  To get smooth playback back, I have to pause and resume the playback.  Even if this is done very very rapidly, it still fixes the playback issue.  it's just really annoying to have to constantly stop and resume playback everytime a video clip changes in the timeline.
I have a dedicated hard drive for video, and a dedicated mirrored array for the OS.  the video drive is a 7200rpm SATAII drive, and I'm using AVCHD footage.  I really don't think it's a disk speed issue... particularly as pausing and resuming (even if you do it as fast as you can possibly hit the keys) fixes it.  I'd rather not spend the $ to set up a RAID 10 for video, if I can avoid it and particularly if it's not needed.

  • Video blurry with motion when trying to create WMV video to share

    I have a Sony HDR-cx350.  I am currently using PE 9.    In the past using my standard def camcorder and PE 7.0 when I wanted to share a video for online I would usually select "share - windows media" and use the LAN preset to create a WMV file that I would upload to photoshop.com and share with friends.    Now with new camcorder and PE 9.0 using these setting any motion in the video become blurry/jagged.    The only way to improve on this is to go into the advanced settings and increase the average video bitrate setting which make the file get large fast.  I dot believe I am using the best project presets to use because PE changes it for me.  But based on MEDIA info below maybe you can tell me what the best project presets would be.    Please HELP  my son's football season is starting soon and the coaches depend on me to shoot game film to share with the coaches.  TIA  FILE INFO using MEDIA INFO PROGRAM  CompleteName                     :es\DCL video 2011\20110615103137.m2ts Format                           : BDAV Format/Info                      : Blu-ray Video FileSize/String                  : 71.7 MiB Duration/String                  : 53s 14ms OverallBitRate/String            : 11.3 Mbps OverallBitRate_Maximum/String    : 18.0 Mbps  Video ID/String                        : 4113 (0x1011) MenuID/String                    : 1 (0x1) Format                           : AVC Format/Info                      : Advanced Video Codec Format_Profile                   : [email protected] Format_Settings_CABAC/String     : Yes Format_Settings_RefFrames/String : 2 frames Format_Settings_GOP              : M=1, N=30 CodecID                          : 27 Duration/String                  : 52s 986ms BitRate_Mode/String              : Variable BitRate/String                   : 10.6 Mbps BitRate_Maximum/String           : 16.0 Mbps Width/String                     : 1 440 pixels Height/String                    : 1 080 pixels DisplayAspectRatio/String        : 16:9 FrameRate/String                 : 29.970 fps ColorSpace                       : YUV ChromaSubsampling                : 4:2:0 BitDepth/String                  : 8 bits ScanType/String                  : Interlaced ScanOrder/String                 : Top Field First Bits-(Pixel*Frame)               : 0.228 StreamSize/String                : 67.1 MiB (94%)  Audio ID/String                        : 4352 (0x1100) MenuID/String                    : 1 (0x1) Format                           : AC-3 Format/Info                      : Audio Coding 3 Format_Settings_ModeExtension    : CM (complete main) CodecID                          : 129 Duration/String                  : 53s 56ms BitRate_Mode/String              : Constant BitRate/String                   : 256 Kbps Channel(s)/String                : 2 channels ChannelPositions                 : Front: L R SamplingRate/String              : 48.0 KHz BitDepth/String                  : 16 bits Compression_Mode/String          : Lossy Video_Delay/String               : -67ms StreamSize/String                : 1.62 MiB (2%)  Text ID/String                        : 4608 (0x1200) MenuID/String                    : 1 (0x1) Format                           : PGS CodecID                          : 144 Duration/String                  : 52s 487ms Video_Delay/String               : -67ms

I feel your pain. The Adobe forum software does some odd "stuff" with formatting, and once that happens, there seems to be nothing to do about it. I have been caught in that "trick bag," more times, than I can count.
As for Encoding to WMV, Adobe programs, are not known to do a good job of this, and that is both PrE and PrPro. For years, many users recommended Windows Media Encoder, which was free from MS, and to use that, one would Export/Share to an intermediate file, then use WME to do the WMV Encode. MS discontinued the old WME, but one user (Neale, IIRC) found a replacement. Unfortunately, I do not recall the name, but it was something like MicroSoft Media Encoder Live, or similar. That user tested the new, replacement utility, and thought that it also did a much better job, than PrE/PrPro.
Still, quality, and especially with motion (either subject, or camera) needs a good Bit-Rate to produce good results, however at the expense of large files. As all Encoders are not created equal, the best that one can do is to find one, that does a good job, and then experiment with the Bit-Rate to get highest quality at a manageable file size. This is the same "balancing act," that we all fight with.
Good luck, and maybe those, with better memories, can come up with the name of the MS WMV Encoder.

  • Opening avi with 'motion jpeg' codec

I am trying to open avi files stored on a sd card from a casio exilim camera, Prism video converter tells me it uses a 'motion jpeg' codec. The 'open avi' VI crashes when I try to open the file in labview ( illegal avi session). Any ideas?? I'm using LV 2011.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Ben,
The labview is 32bit 2011. As I have said before the codec is 'Motion JPEG' (see attachment). Please google 'Motion JPEG avi codec' to see that a number of manufacturers have resurrected this codec for use with video capable still cameras. The file runs on media player, VLC, movie maker etc.
See attachment for filter names. You will see that I have downloaded and installed a couple of codecs to try and get this going.
I have no control over the way the camera saves files. I have asked casio to provide information on their codec and to tell me where to get it.
    Cheers

  • Rendering/playback issues with Motion

    Greetings!
I am relatively new on these forums, and I just posted this same question/situation under "Mac Pro" as I am not sure if this is a software or hardware issue.
I'm working on a video project, and trying to apply Digital Juice's R2G Motion templates to my title sequence. The problem is the rendering of the template in Motion is awful. It strains to play, it's painfully slow, and it's impossible to really get an idea of what is going on. Even if telling Motion to take the rendering from "Full" to "Half", rebooting my Mac, clearing PRAM, and having Motion be the only running application, it makes no difference. Playback is practically at a stand still.
The confusion comes when I tried to run the same template in Motion at my work computer. Playback, while still slow, is manageable. It will at least play back the template at half speed "smoothly" enough that I have a good idea what is happening. And in this test, I was running FCP, Word, TweetDeck, and Juicer at the same time. With all that, Motion on my work computer played the template back at a better pace than my home computer.
Here's the breakdown on the computer's hardware:
    WORK COMPUTER:
    2.66 GHz Quad-Core (4 core)
    8GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 4870
    HOME COMPUTER:
    2 3.2 GHz Quad-Core (8 core)
    8GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 (2 cards)
Both are running Mac Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and Motion 4. And the template is playing better on my Work Computer. Hence, my confusion.
If anyone can give me a good direction to follow, a workaround, or some sort of solution (the only thing I've found suggested is a new video card), I would be eternally grateful. (And no, doing the job on my work won't fly. LOL)
Thanks, everyone. I look forward to the replies.
    Tee Morris
    Struggling with Motion, at present

    Welcome to the family.
Your 4870 card is superior to the 2600.
I have no idea what Digital Juice is up to these days but their stock video packages come with h-u-g-e media files that must be rendered using their Juicer app.
Templates often include base media that is ultra-high rez to accommodate any format and the components must be rendered out to your format BEFORE you start working.

  • Motion for still Photography???

I want to ask you guys if any of you have used Motion for still photography, lets say portraits and more specifically with chromakeys..
the thing is I was looking for doing some stuff with a PS plugin called Primatte Chromakeyer, so I downloaded the demo and its way cool, but dont have the money to buy it right away...
so my thinking got started (it usually does not do anything) but this time I tried using motion on one of the psd samples the Primatte had in their site...
I opened a new motion project and sized it to the sample picture size and change the aspect ratio to square pixels, and then applied my DV Matte Blast from dvgarage.com and it worked out fine, then did the same image using the primatte RT from motion and looked a little better then just exported to a JPEG image and compared the files... they quite looked the same but the color was contrasty just a bit...
so what you experienced motion users think of these matter???
    heres the sample image:
    http://nogalesdefiesta.com/media/applediscuss/crhomatest.jpg

I made another test, these time I used only the DV Matte Blast on my image,
all other procedure is the same as the first post, so this time I changed the export settings to use the Photoshop setting, it gave me the cut out image with a black backgroung but no alpha, so I had to re-export the image but this time I move the settings so it would just give an alpha (it gave me a black and white image, a matte)...
now in photoshop I just added this matte to an alpha channel to the original image and it gave a good result....
here my latest shot at it:
    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/459/4593102-1.jpg
what I'm getting out of this???
if I just want to change a couple of images it will do the trick...
but still if a want to do more portait stuff, I guess will have to go with the Digital Anarchy Primatte Chromakeyer....
but it certainly works this way, but can't go over 2048x2048 pixels.

  • Masking issues with Motion 5

    Hi guys,
I had this general masking technique that I used with Motion 4 where I'd use any group of shapes, paintstrokes and so on, to mask some other object by dragging my group of "mask objects" into the image mask source well.
This technique no longer works as expected with Motion 5.
As an example, consider this project where I want to gradually reveal a circle.
Below are screen shots from both Motion 4 and Motion 5 of the same project, at frame 10:
As you can see, Motion 4 gradually unveils the masked shape (a circle), but Motion 5 doesn't.
I could get around this particular case by adding a write on behaviour to the circle shape. BUt this does not work as a general masking technique in M5, which is a bit sad.
Anyone care to shed some light?

You could get away with it by setting the blending mode to stencil alpha, but that won't work in every situation.  The other thing you could do, is place the layer that's the source of the mask at the very bottom of everything, so it's not shown, and leave the layer turned on.  Then all should work sorta the same.  Quirky.
I'm not really familiar with what stencil alpha does, so I can't comment on that.
But the bottom layer option won't be any good if you want partially transparent output.
It *will* show unless you have some layer covering it up, which would be purely coincidential
UNLESS you use one very very special color for the mask source shape, and send the whole shebang through the keyer to get your alpha channel proper
    Chandosx wrote:
And one other way I just tested, that works for sure, is using keyframes on the source shape's "First Point Offset"(or last ).
Hey, a self-made "write-on" for the mask source shape?
Well, it works in M4 - I'll confirm with M5 tomorrow.
Thanks for all your efforts to figure this out!
I still certainly consider this a bug and would expect this to be fixed.
How can I go ahead and report this a bug to Apple, are they monitoring this forum?
    Cheers!

  • What happened to Final Cut's integration with Motion??  Renders are hosed..

So is it just me? I have a HUGE project (1.5 hour bio/documentary) that is crashing Final Cut every time it tries to render or export. I was getting an error that said the crash could have been possible to a "ProGraphics plug-in." I can't locate any plug-in anywhere on any drive that's associated with "ProGraphics" at all. From what I gather it's something to do with Motion integration, causing problems with renders. Basically, I've used many Motion effects within my Final Cut sequences. They're nested everywhere, and were rendering just fine a few days ago (although I was still having issues with exporting). So basically I either need to wait for a fix, or go back and re-cut without the Motion graphics. Uggh. Disgusted and in need of a patch (or a drink).
My versions of all software are current, as is my operating system. I've done all updates and patches (I'm a versiontracker geek so I keep up with this stuff). I've deleted preferences, dumped all render files (that's when I figured out the rendering issues with Motion), rebuilt permissions, created a clean User Account, etc. I've done hardware tests on the drives and RAM. I'm out of options.
Can anyone from Apple confirm that there are indeed issues with this, just to reassure me that I'm not going insane?
    Thanks.

Try searching the forums for that ProGraphics term., might find something that helps.
Chances are you lost or damaged a system-level hook in one of your recent efforts to stay up to date. Most of us would not update QT or the pro apps until big projects are out the door or securely backed up. We often print to tape or export a completely flattened movie before running major upgrades to the Mac OS.
However, I just popped open an old FCP project that has some Motion work in it from about 8 months ago. Everything hooked right up and some tests rendered okay.
Huge projects with delicately nested elements need careful workflow decisions. I try to pre-render or use proxies where ever possible. Hard lessons learned over a decode of After Effects work. Hope you get better advice but searching for the ProGraphics error term will get you results faster.

  • What is best program for creating motion on stills?

I have to create a still sequence with motion within one of my projects. I've been using FCP but it's a cumbersome process and as many have pointed out, the results are less than satisfactory. Some posts have mentioned using Motion and others Adobe After Effects. Which is better and what's the learning curve (assuming one is already familiar with plotting motion in FCP)?

You might also just play with motion favorites and/or paste attributes from within Final Cut (that's how I'd do it).
Create several different moves and then copy those to multiple clips.
You may have to tweak your keyframes a little depending on picture size/shape.
There's just not an easy way to make each still do exactly what you want.
Using the automation tools FCP provides should get you in the ballpark quickly, but then fine tuning is just time consuming.
Behaviors in Motion would be easier than AE, more specifically grow shrink, and throw. The main obstacle you'll run into in Motion is transitioning between the stills is limited.
You might also look at iMovie. They have a Ken Burns filter you can apply to everything.
You give up some control over exactly what you want the still to do - but it's quick.

  • Strange problems with Motion 3

I upgraded to Motion 3 a few days ago and M3 is giving me some weird problems. I have tested on 3 different Mac systems.
    - Imac with Radeon X1600 running latest Tiger,
    - MacPro with Quadro FX4500 running latest Leopard,
    - MacBookPro with Radeon X1600 running latest Tiger.
    1. Simple Border - when I apply the filter 'simple Border' to a few layers of animated stills, the borders jump out of place randomly on Imac and MacPro, but work fine on MacBookPro.
    2. Gaussian Blur - when applying a small amount of gaussian blur to video on my MacBookPro, the video immediately turn into an orange overlay. Imac and MacPro work fine.
    3. I created an animation with a few stills flying in and out of the frame. All stills have exactly the same animation, one after another. When I open the motn workfile on my Imac, the animation work fine, but when I open the workfile on the MacPro, one of the layer start to scale down for a few frames then back to normal. I have checked the Keyframe Editor but there is no corresponding keyframe to animation the scale down.
    4. When I drag clips on the timeline, the keyframes of the clips are suppose to move together. Most of the layers behave correctly but some random layers' keyframes simple refuse to move. I have to select the keyframes in the Keyframe Editor in order to move them. This happens on both the MacPro and the MacBook Pro. I have not test it on the Imac.
The problems are so random and they are driving me and my client nuts. Have anyone of you out there experience the same/similar problems?

    Welcome to the discussions.

Use the uninstaller provided with the Sophos software. You can uninstall CUDA via the preference pane. Be sure you remove the com.nvidia.CUDA extension which is located in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Not sure if Fan Control has an uninstaller so you will have to do it manually:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
Be sure to remove your two Login Items. Finally do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • What Is Wrong With Java? STILL NOT ANSWERED, PLEASE ANSWER!

So today (10 PM January 20th), the Firefox Plugin Checker said that my Java version was outdated. I also got a pop-up saying that my current version of Java at the time (Java 7 update 10) had vulnerabilities. So to try and fix this, I went to the Java page and downloaded the update (Java 7 update 11).
To check and see if my update was working, I went to Java's check page, as well as another page I use. And here I discovered a problem. I got a notification that an old version of Java had been detected, and another prompt to download the current version (which I had already done). So I erased all versions of Java from my control panel, and tried to check it again. And when I did, I got this: http://oi50.tinypic.com/35b6xx2.jpg and http://oi47.tinypic.com/15fg37p.jpg.
As you can see, both pages tell me that I need to install a missing plugin of some sort. So, thinking this would resolve the issue, I clicked the Install Missing Plugin button. This is what it told me was missing: http://oi45.tinypic.com/302uwbl.jpg. So I clicked next to install it.... and got this: http://oi45.tinypic.com/2cici0x.jpg, which I assume means that the plugin did not install. So I pressed Manual Install... and was lead/linked right back to the Java download page (where it all began, and what doesn't seem to be working in the first place)
I go to check my plugins again (Just to make sure and also for extra information), and it appears to say that my Java version is current (is that what "Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.110.21" is? I don't know, I am not good at technology at all. Either way, here is what it looks like: http://oi48.tinypic.com/4kxzz4.jpg). So...if it is current, why is it not working (i.e. I am unable to play games, DO MY COLLEGE CLASSWORK, or play Java-based games)?
If it helps anything, here is what my control panel looks like in regards to Java right now: http://oi45.tinypic.com/2qlxu9t.jpg Am I missing anything that would make Java work?
And before anyone says that Java is not essential: It may be that way to you, but I need Java to do classwork for college. Veterinary college.
So, in short, what is going on with Java, and how can I fix it?
EDITEDITEDIT: I Have found that I can do my classwork without Java.
HOWEVER, this DOES NOT mean that the problem is solved or over with. I STILL WANT TO KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND GET JAVA TO WORK. Even if I never actually need it, I would still like to have a (working!!!) Java version because of two reasons: 1) I would rather have such a program and not need it, than need such a program and not have it, and 2) aesthetics. Sorry to say, but I am very particular about how things look when it comes to my belongings, and the fact that Java is messing up is making me actually stressed. In short, I still want the above issue solved, even if it's just purely for the sake of Peace Of Mind.

STILL HAVE NOT GOTTEN A REPLY. PLEASE ANSWER ASAP, AS THIS IS STILL IMPORTANT TO ME. COME ON NOW, I KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE ONLINE AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS!!
