Distiller 9.4 crashing in OS 10.6.6

Acrobat Distiller 9.4 crashes at the end of pdf creation with no log file and no pdf created. Running on Mac OS 10.6.6. Any suggestions? Just started having this issue, worked fine for years. Was using Distiller 9.0 and updated to 9.4 hoping that would solve the issue. Stopped at 9.4 because none of the updates seem to help. I can open a Microsoft Word document and print to pdf using Adobe PDF option in the Mac print dialog, but cannot create a pdf with an eps file in Distiller or from using the "Create PDF" option in Acrobat Pro.

Yeah, I know. Hoping not to have to go that route just yet. The networking is a bit tricky with the Macs and PCs so don't want to make any major changes via upgrades right now, may try a safe boot to empty the font cache and see if that works.
Thanks so much for your input.

  • Acrobat 8.1.2 - PDF Printer still not working & Distiller crashes on startup!!!

    Hello,
when 8.1.2 update was released my hopes where great but now I'm realy disappointed!!!
After 3 times reinstalling CS3 Suite (incl. clean cs) and updateing for hours NOTHING seems to be fixed! Oh, well, the bouncing icon seems to be but maybe just because I'm not using Acrobat any more...
Here's a summary of my specs and the problems I have:
    OSX 10.5.2 on a Intel 8-core MAC Pro w. 4 GB Ram
Suitcase Fusion (also for System Fonts)
    CS3 Premium w. latest Update(s)
    Xpress 7 + Love Bundle
Country settings: Lang. German, country Austria
    Installed Hardware:
    Superdrive
    ATI Radeon graphic card
Mighty Mouse wireless + New wireless Apple keyboard
    24" DELL TFT monitor
    2 x 500 Gb HDD's
The main problem is that I HAVE TO create print PDFs from Xpress doc's wich is impossible without Distiller!
The 8.1.2 update seems to fix the "pausing PDF printer Problem", now the PDF printer sends the PS file to Distiller wich just crashes!
Here's the Distiller crash log (looong):

I posted this elsewhere, but I thought it couldn't hurt to repost here:
I had a similar problem and finally figured out why (and now to fix it).
    Permissions were messed-up on ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat
I did not have read-write permissions in it and Distiller was failing to create the ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat/Distiller 8/FontCache subdirectory.
I simply changed the owner and permission on ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Acrobat and the problem went away.

  • Distiller will suddenly close/crash the *SECOND* time I open a file for converting to PDF.

The subject heading says it all: Distiller will suddenly close/crash the *SECOND* time I open a file for converting to PDF.
But I think I have a clue why this is happening. Typically, I use Distiller to convert EPS or PS files into PDFs. Also, almost without fail, I embed the required fonts (exclusively Type 1) directly into the EPS/PS files (using the required PFA format) so no local fonts on my computer are needed to be looked for by Distiller to be embedded in the resulting PDF; they're already in the EPS/PS files.
But yesterday, I attempted to convert some EPS/PS files to PDFs using Distiller in which I had NOT embedded the Type 1 fonts (in PFA format, of course) in the source EPS/PS files. The first such conversion would work (in which I select "Open" and choose an EPS/PS file for conversion), but after that initial conversion, the *SECOND* time I clicked on "Open" (open file), Distiller would immediately close/crash.
I then searched the web for answers, and discovered some people were having trouble getting Distiller to initialize if any of their computer system fonts were read-only. So, I went back to my EPS/PS files and embedded the required Type 1 (PFA format) fonts into them, and then—magically—Distiller worked without a hitch: I could open and convert any number of them in succession, with Distiller never closing/crashing.
So, I concluded the reason that Distiller had been crashing upon the second attempted opening of a file (again, simply by pressing the "open" button to search for a file to convert, *not* after selecting a file) must have had something to do with Distiller scanning my computer's installed fonts when there was no embedded PFA font to reference, and a read-only font on my system was causing the problem. However, I looked in the two logical places where my fonts should be located (c:\psfonts and c:\windows\fonts), but found *no* font files' attributes set to "read-only" So, I'm stumped.
I'm using Distiller Pro 10.1.1316 (acrodist.exe) on a Win 8.1 machine. I've found similar posts, going back to 2004, about Distiller immediately crashing after opening when some fonts are read-only; I haven't yet found a post about anyone successfully using Distiller to convert one EPS or PS file to PDF, and then having the program crash when the "Open" button is pressed subsequently. Any clues, anyone?

Never heard about the crash and that does not sound normal. Be sure to do the updates to Acrobat in case that resolves the issue. You might also check the font settings in the settings file and check to ignore the error if the font can not be embedded and Distiller should use what it considers to be the closest system font.

  • Distiller 8 crashing when trying to add watched folder

*** Reposted from Distiller Server forum ***
    Hi,
I am running Distiller 8.0 and am  having issues trying to add watched folders. Adding watched folders in  the past has generally been trouble free, and nothing a quick restart  won't solve at worst.
However, Distiller is now crashing when I try to  add a new watched folder. An empty dialog box shows and then the app  quits. It also does this when going into the watched folder dialog and  cancelling rather than attempting to add a folder.
PDFs are  still being successfully created, so there isn't a problem on that side.  There is one oddity though - a PDF file has made it onto the watched  folder list. It obviously shouldn't be there, and won't budge when  attempting to remove it.
Has anyone come across anything like this before.  Or, crucially, does anyone know what might be going wrong?
Here's a  screenshot (with some blanked out business info) of the dialog that  comes up. This is just after trying to add a watched folder, and just  before it quits/crashes.
    Thanks,
    Kurt

  • Checking Fonts = Crash in Acrobat 10.1.4

I have uninstalled, run the cleaner, reinstalled, and tested at version 10.  I can print PDFs without an issue.  Then, when I update to 10.1.4, whenever I print a PDF it hangs at the "Checking Fonts" phase.  Also, when I open Distiller, it also crashes immediately upon "checking fonts".

  • Distiller

Why does Acrobat 9 Pro Distiller crash so often in the Esko Artwork Odystar 4.1 workflow? It runs on a Mac Pro running OS X Server 10.6.8.
    ~Cliff~
    (not the fiscal)

Distiller isn't crashing. If you look at the log, you will see that Distiller is detecting an error in the PostScript being distilled and thus, cannot produce an output PDF file. In particular, an ioerror is detected in the data presented to a defined procedure ImagemaskDistiller. Whatever is generating the PostScript file is generating incorrect PostScript.
By the way, pure PDF workflows are much more reliable than those in which conversions in and out of PostScript are involved. But I suspect you know that already!

  • Printing to "Adobe PDF 8.0" from fails on Snow Leopard

Creating a PDF using Apple's native "Save as PDF" functionality does not preserver hyperlinks created in Microsoft Word documents.
On Snow Leopard 10.6.3, using Microsoft Office 2008 and Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0, I have found that printing to the printer option called "Adobe PDF 8.0" fails to generate a PDF --- at all!
The errors are below. I tried this with a very simple document that said "This document has a hyperlink." The result was the same regardless of whether the word "hyperlink" was a link or not.
I found that printing any web page from Safari generates the same error. Looks like this is a general Adobe PDF problem on Snow Leopard -- or is it just my installation?
Any help or pointers to help would be very much appreciated.

  • Can't open pmd files using InDesign

    hi all
I have a few pmd files created back in 1996 using Mac at the time, can someone help me to open the files or convert it so I can see them in Indesign please?
    Thanks

I think there are two main reasons to reopen old PMD files. (1) Make new PDFs or ePUBS for tablets or (2) republish the publication, new edition etc. What I found is that we never know if a PMD will open whit In Design or not. If you did the right thing when you worked with Page Maker you should have saved your publications "packaged" ie, with pics, arts and fonts, using an option at PM "save" dialog. If you did so MAY BE your are half the way. As I noticed in other posts and forums, In Design needs that PMD, pics and fonts to be in the same directory. When you closed the files in PM, your disc contains PM, in root but pics and fonts each in their own directory, so, ID will not open and probably loop and stall without giving you any tip of what you are doing wrong. Create a correct directory at you computer and don't try to open from CDs or worst: old zip discs an even 3 1/4 rigid discs. Install all the fonts used at your PMD work. As Adobe's faqs say, In Design will open PM 6.5 up only.
If you did the wrong things some years ago, o-ho... I are something lost. Is you do not know the what fonts to install and have no 1990s and 2000s font discs you have nothing to try with In Design.
PM has the "conflict font" dialog, ever opening the files closed without proper fonts save too. ID has not (for PMD files) and crashes. I have CS5 installed. I found that some times I do what I said above and the file opens, other times, not.
But there is 100% fail safe thing to do. Perhaps you have at the bottom of an old box your Page Maker installation disc. I found mine 6.5 and 7.0. Ok they where developed for Windows 3.1 (anyone remember?) and Intel 386 and 486 CPUs. But SURPRISE! At least Page Maker 7.0 installs and works perfect in a i7 (fast one with 8 gb), two screens, fast graphic cards and amazingly, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits without need of any reverse compatibility trick or system.
So, I installed 7.0, installed the fonts, and opened PMDs at PM, not at IN. It works! It's the ONLY SOLUTION I FOUND for unable to open PMD files in In Design.
But about the goals?  You will be really amazed how fast PM 7.0 works in a modern machine. I prepared a 360 pages book with some 60 pics to be printed as PDF. The i& took an impressive low 2.8 seconds to close the file and another 15 seconds to create the PDF with Nitro Pdf Creator (freeware), and this is the very point.
As you remember, during PM era, you have to export for PDF via Adobe Acrobat Distiller that was very slow at the machines at the time. I did not tried to reinstall early 2000s Distiller because we know the amount of incompatibilities of Acrobats, and Readers, and Distillers. Old Distiller possibly will crash your actual Acrobat Reader. Then use PRINT, not EXPORT TO PDF, installing a freeware pdf printer as Primo PDF or it's big sister Nitro PDF. The Page Maker printing dialog permits to choose your PDF settings as exact size of the paper and color separation to bureaus print. Very simple and fast.
So I am printing old books an articles as PDFs with PM 7.0 an then converting to ePUB using another great freeware called Calibre.
I hope this can save a lot of time for someone and make people able reuse their old PMD files ever.
If you did not work wiht this stuff pre In Design an have no PM installation disks, ok, you could blame the market that do not offers old "used" software, that sometimes can save the day. Ask for friends is they have a copy of PM 7.

  • Distiller 8.1.3 Crashes on Startup, and Other Pro8 Woes

I bought Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 a couple years ago, and Distiller 8.1.3 has never worked.  I have a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5, currently running 10.4.11.  Whenever I double-click Distiller, it doesn't even get as far as an opening screen before it crashes.  All it tells me is:
    The application Distiller quit unexpectedly.
Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
Meanwhile, I've never been able to create a PDF using the print function.  I make the settings, it goes through the motions, an icon of a laser printer or something appears down on the toolbar, and no file is created.
What I really need this for is to create a PDF of my book interiors from Quark XPress 7 for the print-on-demand printer.  Formerly, they've been able to work with exported PDFs, but now they claim they absolutely need it done with Distiller.
    Any suggestions?

    Try the Following:
Go to Printer Setup Utility and remove AdobePDF from Printer list.
Choose either Acrobat or Reader from from help menu choose repair installation.
    Click on AdobePDF.
Now try to create a PDF.
Open Disk Utilities and Try repair permissions.
since your using X.4 look for and download AppleJack.
Restart in SingleUser Mode (Command -S) and when B&W screen finishes loading Text info and there is a Blinking cursor.
At that point Type applejack.go through all the procedures do items 3 & four both for system and for each user. When finished type return then choose restart.
If that doesn't work you may have a problem with Print driver. It not be up to date.
Go to Printer's website and download the latest version.
Next go to Printer Setup and remove you printer from the printer list.
Next open and install the New Driver (even if exactly the same version as previous).
Now try to create a PDF either by Apple's print menu PDF button. Or by choosing AdobePDF in the print menu.
    If that don't work try:
Gather up your Acrobat install Disk and download from Adobe Support > Udates , all items related to Acrobat 8.
Now open Acrobat Director (Folder) and choose uninstall.
Next from finder choose file menu > Find. When opens up type in first Acrobat and remove all items associated with Acrobat 8 to trash and empty. Make sure they are only related to acrobat.
Next Type Adobe and repeat. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR PDF'S.
Now run Disk Utility and repair permissions.
Install install Acrobat and  open. Close the run each updater in turn.
Now try to create a PDF. If none of this works then you might have some type of extension, control panel, or other item installed in your system interfering. Most ly you don't and one of the bove methods will get you running.
(Please note information is given by an Experienced User of Acrobat. I am not an employee of Adobe.)

  • Distiller Crashes

Did a fresh install of Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Pro on my Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit system and it is not working properly. When I try to launch Distiller it crashes. When I try to print to the Adobe PDF printer, the application asks to save to a location and looks as if it is saving but nothing gets created. I am able to open Acrobat and create PDF's but not print to the PDF printer or run Distiller.
    Thing's I've already tried:
    - Run repair with no success
    - Reinstall twice with no success
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply! AA9 Pro is supported on Win 7 x64 and I've installed it successfully on many Win 7 x64 computers. However, this issue is occuring on one specific computer. I will try the updates and see if that works. I use the same source files for all the installs that I do and this one just happens to not work accordingly. However, the user that I am installing it not particularly follow the rules of IT but regardless I need to find a fix. Could it be conflicting with a specific application? I actually tested it with most of his applications that he has and so far my AA9 is working fine. The user does install some applications on the D:\ which shouldn't matter.  I just took a look in the the event viewer and I indeed get an error about distiller crashing.

  • Acrobat 9.5.3/4 update caused distiller to crash, and now cannot print to PDF

We have a TON of computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro.  They have been running fine, however today I got a ton of calls about not being able to print to PDF.
When you try distiller crashes with:
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022).
This is occurring on anyone who is up to date on patches.
And old computer that was on Acrobat 9 works, updated to 9.2, worked, updated to 9.5.3 = Busted as noted above.
I cant seem to find how to uninstall that patch, and I don't want to uninstall 50 copies and re-install.....
    HELP PLEASE!~!!!

Hmm. Never seen this before, and Google has no hits in connection with Distiller. But there are many google hits on this error.
All of them seem to relate to permissions on EXE or DLL files. I guess the first and simplest thing is to ensure that these users have read permission on every file in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat folder.
But it need not be these files. It could be a system DLL (perhaps the patch makes Distiller start to use a system DLL for the first time). There are a number of tools (e.g. DEPENDS.EXE) which can trace DLL dependencies for an EXE.

  • Distiller crash when printing from air 3.2

I have a problem with the new air runtime 3.2 when printing to pdf. For some reason when printing an movieclip through the pdf printer. It crashes.
    -What i've tried so far.
Updated the air runtime // dev kit in flash builder. Changed the app xml and recompiled.
Removed the PDFX4 2008.joboptions (Suggested in some forums)
Tried to set the transparancy option to none (somewhere in the joboptions file).
What is odd, it works perfectly with the old air runtime engine 3.1. But after updating to air 3.2 it crashes.
This was the error message, it probably has something to do with text/embedded fonts (pure graphics seem to wordk). But i'm not sure. The error from the log file :
    Acrobat Distiller 9.5
    Started: maandag 2 april 2012 at 7:54:13

I tried it with acrobat 8 (also worked with air 3.1)

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

I seem to have solved my own problem (will need some further testing but for now it is working). For some reason the display object that has to be printed needs to visible on the stage. So constructing an (sprite/movieclip with classic textfields) in memory and sending it directly as a printjob resolves into a crash. But if you attach it to the display/stage before sending the printjob, the problem seems to be resolved. Maybe this is the same reason why a printed sprite/movieclip gets corrupted after printing.

  • Acrobat 9 crashes right away so does Distiller

I installed Acrobat 9 and Distiller. The photoshop/illutstrator and indesign work fine the rest of the cs5 suite crashes after opening application in the dock or application folder.
i doesn't work on both of my mac pros...using latest OSx....adobe support is unable to help (of course!!!) does anyone have an idea?

I'd bet that there is something in your Mac OS X system that is corrupted. Go to another user on the computer, or create another user on the computer, and run the applications. If they run there, it's the system, not the applications.

Putting aside whether I do or do not have an appropriate licence, since that's my problem, the kernel of Windows Server 2008 R2 is the
same as Windows 7 64-bit so I think the question should still be relevant.

  • Adobe Acrobat Distiller 9 crashes on start

I recently bought a new notebook with Intel Pentium dual-core processor T3400 and Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed.
This weekend, I have been installing some software, including Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended.
Actually, I bought Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro just for having Acrobat Distiller (not: Distiller Server), to use in book publishing with Corel Ventura 10 and PostScript. The version I got is Acrobat Distiller 9.
However, when I now start up Acrobat Distiller 9 it shows up for one or two seconds and then crashes (just vanishes from the screen without an error message).
I found the same problem described for earlier versions of Distiller (in XP and Mac) in various online fora, but thus far I have not seen a solution described anywhere.
It seems to be a common (and long-standing) problem, certainly there must be a fix?
(I already uninstalled an reinstalled Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and also tried "Repair Acrobat Installation" under "Help" in the programme. To no avail.)
Let me know if you have an idea. Thanks.

Got Distiller to work. Seems the problem was with software activation/licensing. I got different software - and a free update to Acrobat 9 Extended - from my merchant and installed it. Distiller now does not crash anymore when starting it up and appears (thus far) stable.
However, I still get an error message at start up:
    Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101
Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFX4 2008.joboptions:
    /CheckCompliance out of range
A quick web search shows that this is also not a new problem. Some say that Distiller is not able to create PDF/X4 files and that the error is thus a bug in Distiller itself. Is that true? (I can't find a joboptions file of that name in my system ...)
Do I need to do anything about it or can I just leave it?
