Distiller disappeared!

Distiller disappeared after installing Adobe Reader X, and I need it to create pdf's for Lightning Source.
Can anybody tell me how to get it back, please?

How exactly can I do that, please? Is distiller part of Acrobat? It was a separate program in my CS5 package. I still have Acrobat 9 available.

Distiller disappeared in FM10

Not sure what happened but I am no longer able to save my book to pdf. I get the system message "To execute Save as PDF you must have acrobat 5.02 distiller installed....", meanwhile I do have that distiller installed ,but my FM program no longer sees it. I tried a few things, first I reinstalled the program FM 10.0.2, but still no distiller, then I installed the latest patch, but still no distiller. Not sure what else to try, please advise.

Did you have the full version of Acrobat or just the "headless" one that ships with standalone FM? If the full version, you'll need to uninstall FM, uninstall any trace of Acrobat (distiller and/or Reader); reinstall Acrobat, then install FM - but not selecting the add-on PDF Creator option.

Distiller Printer keeps disappearing

I have been using Distiller 5.0 for years and have never had a problem with it showing up in my printers and faxes list. Just recently the distiller printer disappeared from my printer list. NO problem, I just reinstalled distiller 5.0 and it was back, until I restarted and poof it was gone. I repeated the instillation and next restart gone again. Any ideas?

I got my distiller to stay put finally. I went into my add remove program list and deleted several Adobe products (air, toolkit etc..)that I do not use. Distiller 5.0 has not disappeared since. I am thinking one of them might have been the culprit? It might be Adobe's way to get you to buy Acrobat with the latest distiller? Just saying...

Table headings disappearing in pdf?

Why are some table headings disappearing when I pdf a Frame 8 file? There is no pattern in the disappearances and each time I pdf the file, a different cell heading disappears. If I create a text box and paste that box over the heading, it shows up fine in the pdf, but that's a dumb way to work. This all started happening in the last month, after I changed computers. Thanks for the help!!

This is the message I get right now when I save to pdf. If I print to a prn, it doesn't open at all. I used to have a tool that converted the prn automatically at my old job, but there's nothing on the new job's computer and no IT help available. I've been doing a workaround by printing the TOC and the document separately and just adding the TOC to the new pdf, but now when I'm trying to pdf a large document (without TOC) that used to pdf just fine (with TOC), I'm getting the following message. I've just pdf'd chapters 7 & 8 with no problem whatsoever.

Disappearing footers in PDF generated from FrameMaker 9

Myself and three other writers are having a problem with disappearing footers in FrameMaker. Here’s the problem: In FrameMaker, the footers display correctly. When we convert a book to PDF, many of the footers disappear. What we find is that a footer (or part of the footer) will appear on the first page of the chapter, but then the footers disappear in rest of the chapter.
Here is some more info:
·         We are using Frame 9. My version is 9.0p250. I'm also using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended, Version 9.3.2 and Adobe Distiller: Professional Version 8.1.3.
·         We have been able to duplicate this problem using multiple guides.
·         Oddly, footers DO appear correctly when I print just one chapter.
·         I’ve tried rebooting my machine and then loaded only FrameMaker (in case of memory issues).
·         I optimized the book file and associated chapters.
·         I experimented with different Distiller settings.
Anyone else having this problem?

It's probably a symptom of needing the MS Hotfix that corrected a problem with text disappearing from PDFs generated from several Windows apps (not just FM).

Sometimes numbering disappears when pdf is created with Framemaker 8

For some reason the numbering disappears in the pdf created by framemaker. I am using framemaker 8 with all updates and distiller 7. I have tried other combinations with distiller 9 and no luck.
If anyone has had a similar problem, please can you let me know how you resolved it.

Converting visio to pdf, bullet points disappear

I'm having issues converting a MS Visio document into a pdf. In my document I have text boxes that use the standard bullets in MS Visio. When I convert the file to pdf using the distiller or the converter icon, the bullets will 'disappear' from the list and enlarge and show up in random locations on the same page. I'm using MS Visio 2003 and Adobe 7 (This also happens with Adobe 8). Does anyone have suggestions or seen this issue before?

Startup error: Distiller cannot find ICC Profiles

I'm on Windows 7 with Adobe CS5 Design Premium. This has just started happening recently, and only occurs occasionally, usually disappears after a reboot.
Full message: Distiller cannot find its standard ICC profiles. Please reinstall Adobe Acrobat to correct this problem.

Adobe Tech support was most helpful on this. First download the updated
Distiller ICC profile files at:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4075&fileID= 3790
Unzip the file and copy only the *.icc files (without regard to the subfolders that they are in - in other words, take the files out of each of the subfolders) to the followng folder in Windows 7:
c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color
These new files will probably overwrite some old ones.
This solved the problem for me.
This is actually the best solution though I found that instead of copying all the .icc files to the windows\sys... folder, all you need to do is copy the 3 Video files from the RGB folder (VideoHD.icc, VideoNTSC.icc, and VideoPAL.icc). Once you add these three files to c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color you will be good to go.
It seems that this was an error on the part of Adobe in that there is no reason to include Video files for printing. Nevertheless, the distiller will look for these and return the ICC profile error message if those files are not present.

Distiller 9 Font Dropping Off in some places

Our work flow is as follows:
.ps files are created in Quark 7.5, exported to a watched folder and distilled (all fonts embedded) generating a pdf.
Said pdf files are then placed into a new multi-page Quark document (the pdfs are ad files in a newspaper) and the whole document is exported as multi .ps files and distilled on my computer in distiller 9.2
This is where the problem starts. Some glyphs are missing from ad files at random in the final PDF'ed piece. Pre-flight does not catch this problem and re-pdfing the same postscript file always remedys the situation. I am trying to find a way to erradicate this problem because I do not always catch these missing glyphs and the paper goes to press like this.
I have included a file. The ad in the lower left is missing part of its title. What is strange is all fonts on these placed pdfs are embedded so the re-pdfing process should not change the overall result. Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if we can just get prefllight to spot this problem (it's blind to it thus far).

Yeah, I see the missing text. This may sound crazy but have you tried taking the hot folder out of the equation? You might consider a way of streamlining that workflow. As strange as it may sound I have had instances where text dropped off when sending an .eps through Distiller, yielding different results then having the preset I wanted set in Distiller and dragging and dropping the .eps onto the Acrobat icon. The different was, going straight through Distiller made text disappear. I posted a question about this happening on this very forum and was told there is no difference in what occurs when these two different ways of creating a PDF are implemented. These .eps files also had fonts embedded.
When I make PDF files from Quark I always use File>Export>Layout as PDF. Sounds like you may need to do some testing with this problamatic file. The up shot is, you may be abel to work up a better workflow and reduce your cycle times.

Form data flashes, then disappears

We have a fillable form we downloaded from a government website. We have filled in all the forms with our data and saved the file. Then when we reopen it, the data shows briefly, less than one second, then disappears. Anyone know what is going on?
I'm working in Acrobat 7.1 Pro, and I believe the form was created in Distiller.

Most likely there is a Reset Form action (or JavaScript) that executes when the form is opened. This is often done for forms that are intended to be used online (filled and submitted). If the PDF does not have security applied then you have a chance of removing this.

Distiller does not work properly

I have Distiller for CS6. When open it, it flashes very fast then disappears from the monitor. What might cause the problem.?

I am pretty sure that you have to install Acrobat and activate it for Distiller to work. I would deal with getting Acrobat up and running first. If you had it working and then uninstalled Acrobat, you may have broken Distiller.

Watched folder issue with Distiller 9.0 and the Network

We found that the Distiller watched folders "In" and "Out" creates automatically to some other folders on the network. This is happened only when missing folders occurs in Distiller when network disconnects.
We just wanted to know how to avoid of creating "In" and "Out" folder automatically when setting up watched folder in Distiller. We have to create the same folders manually in the watched folders assigned directory.
I need to disable the option "In" and "Out" created automatically through watched folder to the assigned folder.
For e.g. if I assigned the watched folders to the particular directory on the network, the distiller should not create these two folders automatically, I have to create the same folders ("In" and "Out") on the particular directory before assigning the watched folder.
Is this work well? Please help me out to solve this issue.

Questions for Michael:
If as the OP says; They have no issue doing so with PC versions of Acrobat why would there be a Licensing Issue on the Mac Version?
So long as each has their own copy of Distiller /Acrobat.
Also, Why is there not site licenses or seat licenses for Acrobat?
(Other products such as MS Office has such for all their products, and other companies do as well, Even Adobe has such for other products)
For the OP:
What type Network do you use? each of the Macs should most likely be setup to use the same Network as the PC if possibly.
Is it possibly to link to the hot folder on the PC side (since once created from PC it doesn't disappear). As I understand it only in OSX.5.8 and X.6 support for PC networks are the most reliable.

Distiller vers 7 keeps losing it's watched folders

I'm running Acrobat Distiller vers 7.07 on OSx 10.4.10
Sometimes once in a week or once in a month or once in 3 days all my watched folders just disappear from distiller.
I'm guessing it happens during shut down or start up. I only seem to notice it in the morning when I start up. It orinally happened every day with CS3 so I went back to CS2. Now it's happening in the CS2 version and it's very annoying.
Has anyone else experienced this? What was your solution?

Also, not blaming Acrobat 7 (too much), but in retrospect, it was not
that great under OSX ...

PDF9.0 Printer creates no PDF or asks for Distiller to use

Hello!
I have different cases in which the PDF-Printerdriver (CS4) is not creating PDF-Files especially from Quark 8.1. System is 10.5.8:
One case is that the print dialog asks for Distiller - which is installed but cannot be choosed (grayed out). We could solve this issue with taking the older PDF8.0 PPD - hmm.
The next case is that the Job comes up in the printing queue - but than stops. There is no way to get it out successfully.
One other case is: The Job comes up in the printing queue - disappears there and we have no pdf in the choosed folder.
Then we have a message in the Disitller Crash log: Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000
Things we found and tried while we are searching for a solution were:
1. Changed owner and user rights of the cups driver in: /usr/libexec/cups/backend/pdf9.0 to root/wheel and 755
2. Installed a new Cups-Filter for QuarkXPress as described in the attached picture.

You have to use the encoder, it supports AVI, but only on the Windows platform. Why are you using AVI on the Mac platform?

Question about Distiller version 8 standard

Hi there,
I really hope someone here can help me out here. I have a user on the network trying to convert MS Project 2003 file to PDF. If he prints to adobe printer half way down the page the text disappears. He can convert to PDF using a free product and looks perfect. He is running Adobe Distiller version 8.
I have searched but have not been able to find anything useful so hoped that someone here would have an answer or any suggestions

Thanks for reply, i am not sure that
it is an MS Project issue but am ready to be proved wrong.
If i copy and past the half of the project plan that is not printed and print to adobe printer it will be converted properly so it does not appear to be a font issue. Also happens on all other computers that are configured identically.
