Distiller error from Indesign EPS-file

I cannot generate a pdf in distiller pro 9 from a EPS generated by Indesign CS4. The EPS is quite large (2.32GB) both in filesize as in dimension (177cm wide by 40cm)
Can anybody help me out here?

Usually the nostringval error points to a font.  You might try replacing any fonts that appear in the EPS file.  The syntaxerror portion refers to possible data corruption but could also point to missing font elements.

When I export an indesign document the graphics are missing from the eps file.

The why it isn't working can be a number of reasons. While I never have exported an EPS out of ID before, I just tried it and it worked fine.
What "graphics" are missing? I used bitmaps, native drawn ID vector, lines and a placed EPS file. Came into AI as an opened EPS fine.
Links up to date? For items not hitting the EPS, are they on a layer set to non-printing?

  • Problems converting from CS4 - eps files show TIFF error

Having downloaded the latest version of Indesign CS6, I have tried to open several douments of a music tutor featuring many EPS music graphics along with many Tiff images. However, I keep getting following error: "Error encountered while reading TIFF image. Image may be damaged or incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again."
I have resaved all the EPS and Tiff images as CS6 files and relinked them into the document but to no avail - the problem remains. I suspect that the  image files are not actually damaged but that there is some other problem. I have 100s of images and am not sure what next to do. I noticed another user ( Kaleidoscopes Violin) who had a similar problem and it was suggested that "if your CS2 file is still intact, try exporting it to interchange format (.inx), then open the .inx file in CS5 (or CS5.5 which is the current release, and not the same as CS5)." - but this was for CS2 to CS5, and CS6 does not allow .inx file export. I need to work with the document in future so exporting it as a PDF file is of no use to me. Is this a known bug in CS6? I would be grateful for any advice. Thank you.

Wow ... very, very helpful responses.  I wish I'd posted this earlier!!
I had no idea that EPS was an older file format, or that PDF was considered a "legitimate" graphics format.  Sibelius 6 only exports to EPS, TIFF (yuck!!), and PNG.  However, I did discover that it "prints" to Adobe PDF.  Odd that the option is located in an unexpected file menu, but very glad it's there!!  The PDF format loads fine into InDesign and also prints beautifully, unlike the PNG option. Yay!!
As far as embedding fonts, I had been making sure this option was checked (when exporting from Sibelius), so it seems unlikely that was the problem. So in theory that would mean it's not a problem of the InDesign font cache, or of a font discrepancey.  In practice ... who knows.  What's particularly puzzling is that some EPS files are fine, while others were not; and also that CS2 had no problems with any of them.
Regardless, the font information is really, really good to know ... I'll save this thread for future use!
Thanks so much to all for your generous help!!!

  • Problems converting from CS2 - eps files show TIFF error

I have multiple volumes of a violin method book in InDesign CS2 and was considering upgrading to InDesign CS5. While using the trial version (which I just downloaded last night), every single of my eps files (hundreds of images across multiple documents) -- which were handled correctly by CS2 -- came up with the following error: "Error encountered while reading TIFF image. Image may be damaged or incompatible. Resave the image with different settings and try again."
Inconveniently, these errors were not collated into a single pop-up box when the document opened; instead, they appear one box at a time, as you page through the document -- so you have to manually close this error pop-up box hundreds of times.
Meanwhile, the problem is not with the image files themselves.  Simply manually re-linking to the exact same image file corrected the image preview in each instance, for my Books 2 & 3.  This would inevitably seem to suggest the image file was never actually damaged or incompatible.
However, in my Book 1, re-linking an image caused the program to crash each time I tried it.
The images themselves are EPS, not TIFF, and are listed in the links palette as such.  I assume that it's simply the image preview which is a TIFF -- however, the pop-up box should be more illuminating for your users who don't do this for a living.
Meanwhile, the status of each buggy link is listed in the Links palette as "Okay." The inability to see the image correctly (and having to close a pop-up box each time you land on that page) is not, in my book, "okay."
I am planning to immediately un-install CS5 and return to CS2; I cannot possibly go through the laborious process of re-linking hundreds of links to image files that are perfectly fine.  However, I wanted to post this feedback for the benefit of other users, or in hopes that the bug will be fixed.  I love my InDesign and am very disappointed that CS5 is handling my documents so erratically.

Hopefully you haven't already saved the new file over the old version. Under no circumstances do you want to do that as there is no way to go back without having CS4 and CS3 to work through.
That said, if your CS2 file is still intact, try exporting it to interchange format (.inx), then open the .inx file in CS5 (or CS5.5 which is the current release, and not the same as CS5).

  • Indesign EPS files cannot be opened by other users

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me out...
I'm trying to export something to a client as an .eps from InDesign CS5.5. I can export it fine, I can open it on my laptop
without any problems using my other copy of InDesign...
But when the other person tries to open the file ( I thnk they are using Corel PaintShopPro X4) it simply produces an
error message saying that the file is either corrupt or uses unsupported features.
The file I am trying to export is vector (ungrouped and outlined to remove any font issues) and also contains JPGs
within the design. ( I have also tried sending him just a page with a vector outline box and nothing else on it and that
    won't open either.)
    Anyone have any suggestions please???
    Many Thanks,
    Jerry

First, a very genuinely felt thank-you to all those who have contributed to this, I really appreciate your input, help and time in trying to help me understand this issue more completely.
    # Peter - Why not do it in Illy?  No specific reason, probably that I am just more familiar with Indesign, and until working for this particular client had never had a problem
with anyone else opening or using an .eps file for my design work. The reason they have a problem - proprietery software BASED on Corel, but not Corel that they themselves
seem not to fully understand leaving me with the problem of trying to work out why for them!
    # Mike - I think you are correct, and it sounds as if you have sent work off to engravers before...Is that the case???
But just to re-emphasise - they are NOT using CorelDraw or PSP X4 - but I do know that their own software is based on it.
    # Bob - of course you are right, but the company won't provide me with a copy of their software - and in my opinion they don't fully understand it themselves.
I think they commisioned someone to make them software to control their lazers - they are in the lazer manufacturing business, not software developers...and despite
many and long conversations with their "technical expert" they are unable to supply any definitive answers - we've even driven 1/2 way across the country and spent
a day there with them and still cannot work out the inconsistencies.
#Dov - thanks for such a detailed and definitve response. I wasn't criticising Adobe or expecting a "magic wand" solution, hope it didn't come across like that!
So, finally a conundrum: Can someone please tell me why:-
If I create a new document in Indesign Cs5.5 and simply add a vector square in black to it and save it as an EPS it won't open in Corel PaintShopPro X4.
If I copy and paste the self-same document into illustrator and export as an eps using the same postscript level, the same encryption (ASCII), the same preview...
It DOES open in Corel PaintShopPro x4.
It isn't fonts, or transparencies, or layers, or OPI conversions...so what the heck is it???

I can go direct from word or my document scanner to PDF with no problems. I did notice though, that I have two instances of Acrobat 11 Pro under Installed Programs.
    1. Adobe Systems, installed 5/14/2013, 1.93 GB, version 11.0.00
    2. Adobe Systems Incorporated, 5/14/2013,  1.85 GB, version 11.0
Perhaps this is causing some sort of conflict but which one do I remove?
    Please help.

Id CS6. I keep getting message that update failed. Using W7 SP1.
I was printing to PDF because that was the way I had always done it on previous versions of acrobat. But I just read on one of the forums to export to PDF which I did and the issue was resolved. I found that there was a quantum leap in output to PDF by exporting.

  • Weird CS4 error when saving eps files on a Mac: "...specified files already exist in the target location"

    Hi There,
All 3 workstations in our studio are experiencing weird file behavior when re-saving eps files from Illustrator.
Basically Illustrator creates a new file in addition to the original and adds a "-01.eps" onto the file name. If you re-save your original, Illustrator brings up a dialogue box that states:
Some of the specified files already exist in the target location. The files marked below will be replaced:
    filename.eps
    filename-01.eps
We've been deleting the "-01.eps" files each time but it's becoming tedious. The behaviour occurs when re-saving an eps file to a server or the desktop.
All machines are new Quad-core MacPros running:
    - Leopard 10.5.8
    - Illustrator CS4 14.0.0
We've checked for Illustrator updates from within Illustrator but we seem to be running the latest version.
Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

    Thanks for the reply.
The error occurs when we save the document but if we choose save as, "Use Artboards" seems to be unchecked so not sure if this issue is related or not. Will re-save the document using save as then see if the issue persists.
Why do we still use eps?
Basically because we've found it to be much more compatible. Our entire logo library is in eps format (18 years worth) partly because it was previously the only format to use and partly because it allows account managers to send logos to clients, printers, TV stations etc and not involve the studio (saving out an eps version).
Although "Create PDF compatible file" is a good idea, we've encountered costly issues with colours and images - especially if the recipient is using old CS software, non-Adobe software or is using some kind of hardware RIP. We now just go with what we know works.
But I do find saving eps versions of everything to be a bit painful. In fact, I've always found Illustrator in general to be a bit painful when compared with Photoshop or AfterEffects. Illustrator seems like it's been developed by a different company some times!
Cheers, and thanks for the help.

  • Error when importing EPS files in Publisher 2010

Whenever I attempt to insert an EPS file (possibly other image types as well) into a Publisher document I get a prompt asking for what type of file the source is and then this error:
    "An
error occurred while importing this file."
This is running as a Citrix Published Application running on Server 2008 R2 and I've found that this does not happen outside of Citrix.  If i login directly to the server via RDP or right from the console I do not get this issue.  I've posted in
the Citrix Forums and it looks like this is something to do with MS Publisher and not being able to use the Explorer shell.
    http://forums.citrix.com/thread.jspa?threadID=307437
Researched this error and found this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/224744 (This is unacceptable since the file needs to be in EPS format to keep functionality)
There was another article but I cannot find it for the life of me at this time but it suggested that you uninstall and reinstall Office or repair Office.
I did both with no luck.
I am able to get Citrix to open up publisher with the shell by initiating this command:
    explorer.exe /root,D:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\MSPUB.exe
With this command firing up Publisher I'm able to import EPS files with no problem.  However I cannot pass an argument to this command so double clicking documents in our Citrix portal do not open up the document but rather just opens up a blank Publisher
file.  So this isn't a good "solution."
I should not have to make this command to just be able to import images as a workaround.  Anyone run into this in their Citrix environments?  Microsoft, do you have anything that can be tweaked with Publisher to allow this to work as normal in
    a Citrix environment?

I was able to get a workaround for this. I made a .cmd and put this into it:
    if [%1]==[] explorer2.exe /root,D:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\MSPUB.exe %1
    if [%1] NEQ [] "D:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\MSPUB.exe" %1
You will need to change your paths to your MSPub.exe and if you are using explorer.exe change that as well.  We use explorer2.exe since we've found issues with using the original explorer.exe.
Once you have that CMD file made.  Save it to your Xenapp boxes in the same location and then point your published app to that file to launch Publisher.
This worked for us but I'm not sure  if it will work for anyone else but give it a go and let me know.

  • Illustrator breaks text at a point when importing from an EPS file?

I am importing an EPS file from a statistical software. All text strings that belong together are in brackets ( ), so the EPS file is OK. When AI creates the chart it happens that the last glyph is a new and independent text string (text at a point).
Is it possible to force AI to respect the structure of the EPS file.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    No.
You can only fix it afterwards.

  • How do i match a color exactly from an .eps file?

How do I match a color in pages exactly from a jpg or eps file?

The Color Selector has an eyedropper tool, the magnifying glass next to the color field at the top. Click on it and anywhere on screen to pick up a color.
Why not just open the eps in Pages, which will convert it to a .pdf?
.eps/ai/pdf files may have spot colors and they can't be matched exactly in Pages but will print through from the .pdf file as a separate plate.
jpegs do not have an "exact color", they are made up of a cluster of different colored pixels.
Also there will be differences depending on whether the color you are selecting is RGB or CMYK.

  • Possible to get the color space and resolution from the .eps file

    Hi all,
We have using the InDesign CS3 5.0.4, windows, javascript.  We need to get the color space and resolution of the graphics (.eps) file using scripting.
The properties of the image like (actualPpi and effectivePpi will return the value only for the .tiff. and .jpg etc) but it will not return the .eps file resolution values.
Kindly give me the suggesting for the decrepancies.
    Regards,
    Nagaraj

... open them programmatically in PhotoShop, read out resolution and color space ...
On opening them in Photoshop, it asks you "what resolution shall I use, and what color space shall I apply?"
A single EPS may contain any number of embedded bitmaps, with any horizontal and vertical resolution, and in any color space. You can use only a few of these with Illustrator -- and even only one at a time with Photoshop --, but other programs allow just about every possible combination.
Not to mention procedurally generated bitmaps, also possible with PostScript.

  • Flash error from Captivated swf files

I need to load swf files made in Captivate into a Flash file. Everything has gone smoothly except for a Multiple Choice quiz swf which shows this error in Flash:
TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference.

The quiz can still be taken even if there is an error but when the main swf file is viewed, the error pops out and has to be dismissed. Is there a fix for this? Any help would be appreciated!

loadMovie() is the best option if you want the external swfs
to appear in the same browser window as your menu. you need a
target movieclip into which to load the external swfs (or use
    loadMovieNum() ).

  • Sound files not playing from inDesign SWF file

Using Dropbox file transfer, I'm sending a colleague an inDesign project  as a SWF file - a flip book with audio. The files in Dropbox are the SWF Movie files, the HTML and the Resources folder. My colleague is trying upload these to his website. I presumed the sound files would go up via my colleagues FTP and Flash player would link to them. The sound files are functioning. Can anyone outline the procedure one should follow to get Flash to engage with this?   Is there a better locale fo this thread?

That's what I thought too, but all files are there.  I used to have numerous files (6-8) in a dropbox folder with all parts: cptx, htm, swf, js and the html would play fine by just clicking on the link.  Once it started not working I made individual folders with each part of the file and included them into each seperate folder.  Still not loading/opening.  This is happening to everyone I send the link to.  I've tried opening it in different browsers too.
Here is a link if anyone wants to see what happens:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/460vq2nqu4dbwf1/courseconnect_training_2013.htm
