I have no problems in the past with Distiller. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

>Distiller 5.0 hangs halfway through task.
This shouldn't hang. It should just stop after an error like this.
>Source: Abc.doc
Distiller does not read Word documents, never has. This is a normal
error if you try. Distiller only opens PostScript files.

I wildly guess about why, and have simply Ctrl-P again to print to Adobe PDF, and maybe half the time it works, without any changing, for example, the Photoshop image that I want converted to PDF. Sometimes, superstitiously, I reduce the res/file size and it goes through, but not always. The diagnostic tells me next to nothing, although I was a programmer for 20 years. There seems to be an Acrobat component named "Distiller," and "readstring" is failing for some reason that only one of the product programmers, or someone with similar knowledge, can understand, and the programmer does not tell me the user what to do about it.
What is the cause of the "ioerror"
The product I am using is Acrobat 6.

I do not know anything about Distiller, which I presume is a component of Acrobat 6 Professional. I would know nothing about "opening a file in Distiller." The ioerror occurs when I try to print, via ordinary means, a JPG file while in Photoshop to the printer listed as "Adobe PDF." Usually this works perfectly. When it does fail with the error log inserted into my original post, I just ctrl P again, and about half the time this works. When it does not, I make the totally uninformed guess that the JPG file may be too big, so I resize it smaller. Sometimes it then gets converted to PDF correctly, but sometimes it fails with the same "readstring" error message log. The success and failures appear haphazard, but as a former professional programmer I know that there are deterministic reasons, even if nobody ever discovers them. Debugging programs is very hard work.
Perhaps someone can suggest a means of forwarding the error message to someone in Adobe programming, who already knows what the error message should mean to me, the user.

  • Distiller 9 - %%(Error:typecheck:OffendingCommand:show)%%

How do I fix this error when distilling a postscript file. Working in Quark8, Snow Leopard. I can open up the same page in Quark6 and process it fine in Distiller 6. My department will soon upgrade to Snow Leopard and I would like to fix this error in Distiller 9.

    I don't know multi-ad creator.
But if they can PS and multi-ad then why not drop the PS into Distiller, make a PDF of the file.
Then place that PDF into InDesign and use File>Export>PDf (Print) from InDesign.

Need Help With Adobe Distiller 9
    Hello Everyone,
    My Challenge :
    =======
I am using licensed version of Acrobat Distiller 9 for testing.
The logic converts the Excel to ps file and then ps file to pdf.
So on local (i.e my computer) it form .ps file and then I am able to conver it to pdf.Everything works fine.
But now I have setup everything on the server, on the server .ps file forms but when I try to convert it to pdf it
    gives me the following error.

It looks like the ps files get formed but somehthing is a miss. because if I try convert it to pdf manually it gives me the erorro,
From the code it just hangs.
I am using a windows applpication  and have created a servic which should run everyday to print the reports

  • LR3.2 RC hangs when using spot edit

    Hi,
I have a strange problem with spot edit:
Seem to happen only with a jpg file (around 6 MB).
    - view at 100% in Develop
    - open spot edit, size 66 for instance
    - indicate a target to be healed
    - when the second circle appears, grab it and begin to move it.
At this movement, LR will hang, froozen with the cursor in the fist shape. You can wait as long as you want, it doesn't recover. The cursor can be moved but you can't close the program. It has to be killed with task manager.
This is under Windows7 64-bit Home premium on a laptop with an i7 CPU at 1.60 GHz with 4 GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M.
LR takes up about 25% of the CPU when this happens and Memory is around 1.9 GB.
I can reproduce this in a new catalogue, with just one picture in it and spot edit being the first step. So, no impact from catalogue size or edit history.
I had this with LR3.0 and installed the LR3.2 RC hoping this would be fixed as well but it is not.
When the photo is fitted in the Develop window, this does not happen.
When the second circle is not moved, this does not happen either.
I did file a bug report for LR3.0 as well as for the LR3.2 RC.
Just wanted to check if anybody else has this problem or if there are any ideas for a work around.

LR3.4.1 64bit has problems printing to Adobe PDF. Some of the selected pictures do not show up in the PDF or lightroom crashes with the following error log:
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: syntaxerror; OffendingCommand: --nostringval-- ]%%
    Stack:
    /build_pattern
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
I was able to print to Adobe PDF with version 3.2.

  • Acrobat 8 Professional distiller

I tried printing to Adobe PDF in photoshop, and that seems to work but the fonts don't embed, and the publisher requires a distiller produced file.
I could swear that when I did a test on an earlier version of the file it worked just fine, but have tried everything I can think of and can't seem to get it to work now. Perhaps I messed up a setting somewhere or missed a step? I'm new at this so that's entirely possible. Thanks for helping!

I see the issue you are having. A publisher would likely want you to use either the print or press settings file, or supply you one to use. I use one developed by IEEE for their publications. With where you are, if the PDF that you save from PhotoShop is what you are looking for, simply print that one to the Adobe PDF printer and create a new PDF. The fonts should be embedded. It is not clear if the fonts are just not embedded when you print from PhotoShop or they do not come through as fonts (but are simply graphics of the fonts). If they are fonts but just did not embed, then go back and try using the print or press settings. If needed, enter the options for the settings file and be sure that the fonts are set to always embed (and likely as subset fonts). If any fonts are not embedded, change that setting. In my AA7, the standard settings exclude a lot of fonts that are characteristic of Adobe. Those fonts are both embedded in the Press and Print options.
Don't know if I have helped, but it basically what you seem to need. I have given two options that may meet your needs. Bill

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.1.0 distiller ICC profile error asks for reinstall

I have Windows XP professional, SP3.
My Systems Administrator recently upgraded my Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 to 9.1.0 and since then I keep getting an error that says: Distiller cannot find its standard ICC profiles. Please reinstall Adobe Acrobat to correct this problem.
    This error happens when:
    1. I print to Adobe from a web page (IE 7.0.5730.11 or Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.20)
    2. I try to print to any printer from certain websites, such as the usps.com, where I print all our postage labels from.
    3. Occasionally when I start up the PC.
Sometimes I get the error but it still pdfs the page. Usually, though, it hangs and then Acrobat and the web browser close.
I seem to be able to pdf MS Office 2007 items (Word, Excel) and my Filemaker Pro Advanced 10 records. I guess it's when I'm "printing" to Adobe as opposed to "saving as pdf" that I have this problem.
Acrobat 8 worked fine. My Sys Admin has reinstalled the upgrade twice (after trying a repair which didn't work) to no avail. He can't find any documentation about this error at Adobe, so he's going to uninstall it and switch me back to Adobe 8.
I do all of the pdf'ing of our deliverable documents at my company and I would like to have the latest edition of Acrobat. If anyone knows of anything I can do, please let me know.
    Thanks!
    Stephie

Adobe Tech support was most helpful on this.  First download the updated
    Distiller ICC profile files at:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4075&fileID= 3790
Unzip the file and copy only the *.icc files (without regard to the subfolders that they are in - in other words, take the files out of each of the subfolders) to the followng folder in Windows 7:
    c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color
These new files will probably overwrite some old ones.
This solved the problem for me.
This is actually the best solution though I found that instead of copying all the .icc files to the windows\sys...  folder, all you need to do is copy the 3 Video files from the RGB folder (VideoHD.icc, VideoNTSC.icc, and VideoPAL.icc).  Once you add these three files to  c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color  you will be good to go.
It seems that this was an error on the part of Adobe in that there is no reason to include Video files for printing.  Nevertheless, the distiller will look for these and return the ICC profile error message if those files are not present.

  • Creation of a PDF hangs no matter from where it is started

    Hi,
we use Adobe Acrobat 9 (v9.55) and one of our collegues has a weird problem.
When he tries to create a PDF from Word over the Adobe PDF Plugin he gets asked twice for the place to save the PDF and after that the conversion hangs at about 10%.
    We also tried the following:
We tried the Adobe PDF printer, the print job gets finished but no file gets created.
We tried to create the PDF from File in Acrobat itself, but same problem like in Word the conversion hangs at 10%
We tried to reinstall Acrobat but no change.
We also tried different Word files no change
Sadly there are no error messages of any kind in the Windows logs.
Anyone have an idea what the problem could be and how to possible fix it?

The creation in Acrobat depends on the PDF Maker in WORD working, so that step does not help. Just as a test, try to print to the Adobe PDF printer with the Print-to-File selected. Open that file in Distiller to complete the creation process.
Do you get a PDF using the process? If so, go back and check the properties of the Adobe PDF printer. It may be that you are not asking for the file location or such. Also check that AcroTray is running in the background (if not, then start it and retry the print process with out the print-to-file).
If you get the printer process to work, then let us readdress the PDF Maker issue.

I've uninstalled CS4, used the CS4 cleaner script after installation and uninstalled the entire Master Collection CS3 and reinstalled CS3. The rest of the suite works fine. Adobe PDF 8.0 did not reappear in my printer list.
I added the PDF printer and here are the settings:

I haven't moved up to OSX 10.5 yet, but I was wondering if you can do what I do in 10.4
In the Print Dialog window in the bottom left is a PDF button. Click on that and you have the option "Save PDF as Postscript". And then drop your postscript file onto Distiller.

    b don't work.
With mentioned [in KB http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/downloads/Acrobat_SDK_readme.html ] command line switch «-F» all works correctly.
This "feature" of the Acro8 (and Acro9? see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b69fa1 ) does impossible execution of the PostScript programs of variable data print.
What to do that Distiller the beginnings it is correct to work (file i/o into %TEMP%-folders) without «F»-switch?

I don't use Acrobat SDK, i make PostScript-programs for the var.data print, f.e. labels with wire name, numbers, barcode etc.; Distiller plays role RIP, carrying out the program.
As a data source at execution of these programs files of various formats can be used: ANSI/UNICODE text, binary (f.e. PhotoShop-RAW data), PostScript (f.e. «print-in-file» from Illustrator) file and others. The same programs can write what or given on a disk (tmp-files), for example the pointer to the data in a source file or the debug information.
For me has surprised that in 8 Acrobat'е all it has suddenly ceased to work, though in early versions and ghostScript all is fulfilled correctly. I have assumed that obviously developers had been limited possibility of data write/reading a disk and, most likely by a TEMP-folder. However even in the TEMP-folders setted by means of a variable %TEMP% of write operation at execute of PostScript-program by Distiller it was not possible to make. Also attempt to read/execute a file which is in a TEMP-folder was unsuccessfully completed also.
During search in the Internet I have found article specified above ( http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/downloads/Acrobat_SDK_readme.html ) in which it is underlined possibility by default operations of file I/O in a TEMP-folder, however impossibility it to make contrary specified in this article, have forced me to write to this forum so it is read by Acrobat developers.
