Distiller not working

Does anyone out there have any idea what's going on here?
I am using Mac OS X Version 10.4.10 and have the usual Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional package installed. Others here use the same package without problems.
Acrobat works perfectly, but Distiller has always refused to work on my machine. It just quits every time I try to start it. This means that when I want to distill a file I have to go onto someone else's machine to do it.
I have repeatedly tried chucking out my copy of Distiller and taking in another from other machines, but I always get the same message: "The application Distiller quit unexpectedly."
I am getting tired of having to use other people's machines, so I would like to know why Distiller doesn't work on mine.
Advice, please?

When I save the pdf from Illustrator I get much heavier files than when using Distiller. This process also tends to split placed images, producing (sometimes printable) white lines. Normally what I do is to save the Illustrator file as EPS and then distill. This saves me the trouble of setting the artboard to fit its content and almost always alleviates the white line problem.
(No-one seems to know why Acrobat has this tendency to split images - it makes no difference whether images are linked or embedded. I have often asked about it but have not received an explanation as to the logic behind image-splitting process. It is inconsistent; sometimes you get it, sometimes not. And why is a split image with all its clipping masks lighter than a whole unsplit image? Strikes me that there's something wrong with the way the application is written because those white lines have caused endless headaches at the printers. I often resort to sending EPS files rather than Acrobat, despite their weight.)
In an example that I just tested I had an Illustrator file of 348 KB containing vector art only.
This produced an EPS of 980 KB.
Distilling this I got a pdf of 196 KB.
Saving out of Illustrator using the same settings as I used for Distiller I got a pdf of 472 KB.

  • Acrobat Distiller not working

I recently upgraded to Mac OS 10.5 and am using Acrobat 7.0 Professional. Since upgrading, a great majority of the files I try to convert to ps are not converting (a vast variety of error messages) and therefore cannot create a pdf file using this method. None of my settings have been changed. I am wondering if Acrobat 7 compatible with OS 10.5 and is there a way to work around this? Acrobat 6 Professional works just fine with the new system.

Acrobat 7 is not compatible with 10.5. In fact neither is 8, you need to
upgrade to 8.1 for some level of compatibility.

  • The distiller is not working properly.

I have a PDF file that I scanned into my computer.  It scanned in at 18 MB, which is to large to send via email.  Until a week ago, my Acrobat distiller was working fine and it allowed me to re-print to PDF an select 'smallest file size,' which worked great to reduce a PDF file small enough to email.  Now when I send this 18 MB file through the distiller and select 'smallest file size,' it made the 18 MB file into a 55MB file.  When I tried it again, it made the 55 MB file into a 113 MB file.  What is going on here?  This is crippling my ability to send important contracts to clients.

I would try one of the preflight tools to reduce the graphics. Not sure why you are getting the growth. If you have an example you can post some place, it would help us to look at it and see what might be going on. The example does not have to be one of the contracts, just something that does the same thing when you reprint.
Also, it is important to let us know which versions of Windows and Acrobat you are using.

  • PM 7/Distiller 5.0 suddenly not working!

I've been happily using the combination of PageMaker 7.0 with Distiller 5.0 and Acrobat 5.0 for several years now, and a LOT lately. I'm generating books in PageMaker, printing them to a .ps file via "Distiller on Drive C:" (selected as the printer), then running Distiller 5.0 to create a .PDF file, and then using Acrobat to build the final book with with front and back covers and bookmarks. This works and delivers a product to the printer that never causes a problem.
Today (!), after going through the normal "Security Updates" last night, the "Distiller on Drive C:" option was missing from the printer selection box in Pagemaker and instead was a "Print to PDF file" option. Using that gave me an absolute CRAP .pdf file with graphics that looked like they were done on an old Atari computer.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Actobat 5.0 with Distiller, and there was my missing "Distiller on Drive C:", but it DOES NOT WORK. When I select it and hit print, it says starting printing, but nothing happens and I have to bomb out of PageMaker using Task Manager.
What happened? How do I get back my working system? Spending hundreds of dollars on replacement software is NOT feasible for me at this point (and boy, do I resent having to spend money I can't afford to fix something that wasn't broken until someone else decided they would do something that was "for my own good"). Plus, there is no guarantee that the .pdf file will be to the specifications required by my printer and I end up wasting more money sending "update" files trying to fine-tune the output of the new program to deliver what I need (every update is a $$.$$ charge to my publisher account to pay for their people to process it).
    Thoughts, suggestions, anyone?

This issue may be dead, but having just encountered the thread I thought I would add some (hopefully) beneficial information.  I too have used the PM7 - Distiller 5 combination for many years as a two step process.
    Here are my thoughts:
The two step process may be rooted in the appearance that the version 5 distiller seemed to be written with a batch approach rather than a single file approach; I say this because the distiller uses a "watched" folder setting and will automatically take anything appearing in that folder and distill it.  It works well with .ps files as well as .rtf which is very useful if your source is MS Word.  I suspect that since the coding approach was with this batch mentality that it didn't seem necessary to install a "printer" item since the point was that files to be distilled would be placed in this watched folder.
My approach was this.  I set up an instance of an HP LaserJet 4 PS printer and set that printer's port to be a file.  I believe I got a better quality .pdf because of the print codes added by the HP Laserjet driver, which subsequently were incorporated into the final .pdf that the distiller produced.  Does that make sense?  My point, I think that the two step process did indeed improve my final output.
This part is just about my particular implementation if you are interested, otherwise the only other thing I have to offer is a suggested fix at the end.
    How I used it:
I had VBA code in access that output my report (hundreds of them - customer statements) to this virtual LaserJet.  As each .rtf was generated in the "in" folder that the distiller was watching, it would get tranformed into a .pdf and distiller would automatically move it to an "out" folder (Distiller actually forced the creation of an "in" and "out" folder inside of what ever folder I defined as being the folder to watch); my code simply looked for the presence of the .pdf to know it was done at which point it moved the .rtf to an archive.  It took about 5 seconds per report and worked beautifully.
    My suggestion for a fix...
I hope this doesn't seem like I am trivializing the issue, I absolutely get the poster's pain... but having had to do this, I suggest the most simple of all approaches; why not just take a different machine, any old machine (if you don't have one, buy one used - you could probably get something to fill the need for under $50 out of the classifieds), then install your PM7-distiller 5 combo fresh and use it to create your final product?  Yes, you would have to move files from your "real" workstation to your "distiller" station everytime you were ready to make your .pdf, but you would probably be up and running in just an hour or two.

  • Distiller does not work properly

I have Distiller for CS6. When open it, it flashes very fast then disappears from the monitor. What might cause the problem.?

I am pretty sure that you have to install Acrobat and activate it for Distiller to work. I would deal with getting Acrobat up and running first. If you had it working and then uninstalled Acrobat, you may have broken Distiller.

  • Adobe PDF Printer not working as print driver; 9.5.5 (pro) with Windows 7, 64 bit

I have installed, repaired, uninstalled and re-installed Acrobat Pro 9.5.5 on a newly formatted SSD with Windows 7, 64 bit on my desktop machine. The program was installed from Acrobat Pro 9.0.0 and updated within the program. I have the program also installed on my laptop, and the Adobe PDF Printer driver is working properly on my laptop.
On my desktop with the newly formatted SSD, the Adobe PDF printer driver is not working. Note that I am using the printer driver, and not any pdf creation techniques within MS Office or other programs.
When I go to the Adobe PDF printing preferences on my desktop, I only get a generic, two tab window open. When I print a file to this printer on my desktop machine, I do not get a window opening that asks where to create the pdf or what to name it, and I never see any files created. In MS Word, the Create PDF option under the Acrobat tab works and opens a dialog to ask the name and location to save, and then opens a PDF Maker progress window and properly creates the file. I can also save a file as an .eps or .ps file and use Distiller to create the pdf. However I cannot get the Adobe PDF printer driver in my Devices and Printers to work properly, although it works just fine on my laptop with the same program (Pro 9.5.5) and same Windows version (7, 64 bit).
Repairing, uninstalling and re-installing does not solve the problem. Acrotray.exe *32 process is running. Any ideas on why this won't run properly on my desktop, but will run on a similarly configured laptop?
On my laptop, I get a full, (7) tabl menu with all the normal options:

I found this answer from Deepak Chauhan on another forum, and it solved this problem!
Try this to add Adobe PDF printer manually on Windows 7, and Windows Vista.
If windows 7 is Enterprise or better edition: (Admin rights required)
Start>search for printmanagement.msc and open the print management module
Expand the print server and expand the computer name to see availbale printers, drivers and printer ports.
    - from printers ensure there's no Adobe PDF printer, if there is delete it
    - go to ports and delete the PDF ports (the ones ending in *.pdf)
    - go to drivers and delete the PDF converter.
Take note if any errors occur, but continue with the following steps regardless.
If on windows 7 home edition, just goto start>Devices and Printers and ensure PDF pritner is not listed.
Then open the registry (if any erors deleting these keys happen, see below)
    1: go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers
delete any adobe PDF printer subkey present
    2: go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
delee the PDF port monitor if present
    3: go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
again delete and pdf printer subkey
If any erros occur, you need to set the owner of the key to the currently logged in admin user, then ensure that user has full control.
Do this by right-click the key and selecting permissions, clicking on advanced, then the owner tab.
Once you've all that has been done, open a command line as administrator.
Copy and pate the following commands in order
    1: net stop spooler
    2: rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection AdobePDFPortMonitor 128 C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\AdobePDF.inf
    3: net start spooler
    4:rundll32.exe printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "Adobe PDF" /f "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF\AdobePDF.inf" /r "Documents\*.pdf" /m "Adobe PDF Converter"
That should set back the pdf printer.
This seemed to provide the link that provided the Adobe PDF Settings tab to the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences that was missing!

The product that I purchased is not working!!!! I need help and I've been stuck in your "Contact us loop" for the last few days and I'm getting frustrated. How do I contact you for HELP!

Probably the best place to start is the right forum for your product. This is the forum for Distiller Server, a long dead product used by big companies, and probably not what you have. If you can't find the right forum, please let us know the FULL name of what you paid for (please check your invoice, as Adobe have many similar products), and we can perhaps direct you. Good luck!

  • Link functions are not working correctly

I am have a number of links on my page and I am using the a;link, a:hover and a:visited commands but I am getting strange results. First of all my css is on a separate style sheet. What I am trying to do is have all my links in gray text both when before and after being visited and I want the text to change to red and underline when I hover over the link. My results are that in live view the links all seem to work ok except for my HOME link at the bottom of the page where it does not change color and does not underline. When I view in browser the results are worse. None of the links change when I hover over them excepts for the DOWNLOAD link. Also note that I have 4 columns of unordered lists about the footer which also does not work either. Here is the source and css code. Thanks for your help.

When you use the link pseudclass in your css it has to be expressed in the correct order.
    LoVe HAte
    Link
    Visited
    Hover
    Active
It doesn't matter that you have not expressed all four but the three that you have still need to be that way.
Anyway, try it, we have nothing to lose!

  • File link not working on Adobe 8.0

    Hi,
on Adobe Acrobat 8.0 the File link does not work. For example if I have in the pdf the link: c:\daten\info.doc, I can't open this link. If it is a Weblink then it is working. The customer told me that was working in Adobe6????
On my PC it does also not work!
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
the customer uses the Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2 Standard and Acrobat Distiller 8.0 Postscript 3016102. I did print to pdf with adobe.
I have all printscreens on a file, if you need more info!
I did create on customers PC a new Winword document and printed ou as a pdf. Weblinks are working, File UNC File not.
I have all Printscreens on a File, you can have it if you like (but i need Filelink or eMailadress?)
    Thanks for your help!

I have adobe acrobat pro for windows and it is freezing up when I try to convert a word file to pdf... I have tried to get this done six ways from Sunday but it is just not working... help!  Chris.

It would be helpful to know what version of Acrobat, WORD, and operating system.
Without that info, I would suggest at this point to open your WORD file and then go to the print menu and print to file using the Adobe PDF printer. Open the created file in Distiller and see if you get a PDF. If so, check to see if AcroTray is running in the background.
You say you tried many ways. It would help to know what you tried and what worked or did not work, and at what point the failure occurs.

  • Adobe PDF 9.0 printer not working

    Hi,
I use Acrobat 9 Professional here and Adobe PDF printer doesn't work.
    Distiller notify " /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/PDFX4 2008.joboptions
    /CheckCompliance out of range".
    What's the problem?

I've just upgraded to Acrobat Pro 9 (actually 9.1.3) for supposed Snow Leopard compatibility and was having the same problem with the "save as Adobe PDF" workflow crashing. Interestingly (or not), if I created a Postscript file and then manually ran it through the Distiller everything was fine, although the Distiller seems to be running much more slowly than the Distiller for Acrobat 8 did under Leopard. This led me to the conclusion that the problem was in the workflow itself rather than with the components that the workflow calls.
I found that there were actually three copies of "Save as Adobe PDF.action" on my box. One was in root/Library/Automator, one was in root/Users/UserID/Library/Automator, and the third was in root/System/Library/Automator. For some reason the Adobe Updater must have put the workflow in all three. Regardless, by eliminating all except the version in root/System/Library/Automator the workflow started behaving and I was able to cut PDFs directly from the Print dialog.
This may not work for everyone, but it may be worth a try.

  • Acrobat Pro version 6 not working in vista ( Windows 7 ) ?

What is the problem with adobe Acrobat pro version 6 and vista (windows 7)?.....really annoying having to upgrade later version costing hundreds of pounds

I am not sure if VISTA has the same problem as Win7 or not. For Win7, the AcroTray application that is used for PDF creation (both when printing to the Adobe PDF printer and with PDF Maker in AA6) will likely not work correctly. This may also be the case with VISTA. To get around this problem you have to print-to-file (you can change the PDF Port to FILE in the printer properties). After the file is create, you can open it in Distiller to complete the PDF creation. It may be possible to create watched folders to automate this process, but is not as ideal. In any case, you will likely have to use a work around. Also, update your AA6 (currently at 6.0.6). I have been able to do this with AA5 on Win7 as a test and it did indeed work. There may still be other issues for AA5 on Win7, but that was the major one.
All of these changes came from the rewrite that Adobe had to do to be compatible with the new OSs, not a trivial task. Do you want to blame Adobe or MS or both? Take your pick, but the end result is that it is time to upgrade. Unfortunately, AA6 can not be upgraded to AAX. You have to buy AAX at full cost at this point. To get the upgrade you would have to have at least AA7.

  • Acrobat Pro 8, Highlight not working in browser

The company I work for has a specific audience that requires functionality in Acrobat Pro. This audience accesses these PDF document on our intranet using IE6 and uses some of Pro functionality (highlight, stick notes) and saves the annotation files locally. All that worked well with Acrobat Pro 6.0, but we recently upgraded to Acrobat Pro 8 and all these users are seeing is basic functionality, similar to what is in Reader. NO more annotation features.
I have verified and Reader is not installed on these workstation, a clean install of Acrobat Pro 8 is installed. If I open a PDF outside of IE6, Pro opens and all the functionality is there, but in IE6 it is limited (Reader Like). I have attempted to add the tools to tool bar but after selecting tools, they do not appear. Browser just refreshes without tools, as if they are being prevented from loading.
Has Adobe changed the functionality of Adobe Pro to only allow in browser viewing of documents with something like Adobe reader? I have searched the web and have seen nothing about this. Please help.

  • Acrobat Distiller NOT Opening...

    Hello,
I had Acrobat 9 Extended, the distiller of which used to work, then i downloaded the new version of Acrobat 9 Extended and installed and deleted the last one. Now the new Distiller Does NOT Run/Crashes on Runing, and thus the Adobe PDF printer does not work either, starts printing and stops in the half for every file, progress says stopped. There are distiller updates on adobe's site but not for the english version. Acrobat updates haven't been much of a help either.
    Any solutions, Please help.

I don't understand having AA9Ext and then downloading the new version, deleting, and installing. This is not part of the Acrobat installation and update workflow. Do you mean you are using the trial version? That may be the problem. If you were using the trial version, once the trial runs out you have to purchase it to use it anymore. Deleting and reinstalling does not do the job; purchasing does the job.

  • Acrobat 5.05 Distiller not Producing .pdf Files

When I first purchased Acrobat 5.05 and installed it, to produce a .pdf file from an application, I printed the file from the application choosing Acrobat Distiller as the printer.  This prompted for a file name and location.  When the OK button was clicked, Acrobat 5.05 launched, and the .pdf file appeared, and was able to be saved.  No other steps were needed.
Now when I attempt to do this, the application indicates that it is printing, but Acrobat 5.05 does not launch, and no .pdf file is produced in any folder.
Re installing Acrobat 5.05 does not correct the problem.
What needs to be done, to make this version of acrobat distiller operate as it originally operated?

Normally it is only needed if you are requesting a PS file that may be sent to someone else and they do not have the fonts OR if you are printing another PDF that had embedded fonts that you do not have one your system. Otherwise, Acrobat will go to find the fonts on your system as per the distiller font list.
The print to file is the most fundamental PDF creation process in AA 5. All of the other options build on it. The repeating the process, but unchecking the print-to-file button. In that case a PS file will be created by the print driver (directed to the Adobe PDF port or such -- I would have to go to my other machine to check the name for sure, but should be obvious unless it is missing) and then AcroTray is supposed to recognize that the file exists and then run distiller in the background. PDF Maker is just a front end processor for the Acrobat Distiller printer. Note that the name has since been changed since folks got the print driver confused with the program Distiller. They did the same change in name to Reader since folks keep thinking they had Acrobat when they only had the Reader. (At least that is my take on their reasons that I have not really seen.)
AcroTray is found in the Distiller folder. It should be in the startup folder of Win XP, listed as Acrobat Assistant. If you look at the running processes with ctrl-alt-del, it should be listed (just click on the program columns to get an alphabetic list). If it is not running, then start it. If it is running and you are having problems, then try ending it and then restarting it from the Distiller folder (just double click on the program).
Also, be aware that unless you change a preference in Distiller, the settings you pick in the Acrobat Distiller printer properties will over ride those of Distiller for the most part. And any changes you make in the printer properties from within a program will over ride the default printer properties, but will not be carried over to the next use of the program -- the defaults will again be loaded. So if you want a particular default setting, use the Start>Printers>Acrobat Distiller (right click for properties) to set the default properties. I never use the standard job settings for instance, but always use something like the press or print settings that embed all fonts. I reality I use a job settings created by a publisher.
So all I am trying to step you through are the basic trouble shooting steps that are necessary to get your system working. Finding where the problem is becomes the first step. We now know that you can print-to-file and produce a PDF with Distiller. Actually, I loaded AA5 on a Win7 Starter system and was able to create PDFs using this process. The AcroTray from AA5 does not work in Win7. Actually, for Win7, I just tried it by changing the port to File and so I don't even have to check the print-to-file button. That was really more of a test to see what broke, and I was surprised that it even installed on the 32-bit netbook. My guess is it may not work at all on a 64-bit system. However, on XP, your AA5 should work fine once we trace down the culprit.
