Distiller problem

I'm running Distiller X (10.0.0) on OSX Server. I have 2 watched folders, one that produces Hires PDF's and one for Low Res PDF's.  2 or 3 times a day a PS file fails to distil. It seems to get stuck in a loop as the progress bar keeps going accross but I get an end of file error.  If I quit distiller and relaunch it the file then distills perfectly without having to re-save it or copy it over again, it just starts up and works so there cannot be anything wrong with the PS file.  It's not the same file each time, it seems to be at random.  The PS files are created directly from Quark Xpress (various versions) and contain various fonts, images, eps's and can range from a single page to 48 pages+.  The PS file can be from anyone on our network so its not any one paticular user, file, font, image, size or anything! just totally ramdom. Is makes no difference if we save the PS file directly into the watched folder from Quark or save them to the desktop them copy them to the watched folder.  The wached folders sit on or server (Mac OSX 10.6) and are accessed via gigabit ethernet.
Anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening?
Thanks
Here is the error log as an example:

A very valid point about the licence, but that cannot be the cause of the problem. Even if I create a PS file on the same Mac that has Distiller installed and then place it in the watched folder created from within distiller itself I still get the same problem. That is one user on one Mac working totally locally...  any ideas?
Also do you have a link to the server based version? I cant seem to find it.
Many Thanks
I fond this article that says Adobe recomends doing it the way I have set up, no mention of licence issues!!

  • Acrobat 8.0 Distiller problem - please help

I have Adobe 8.0 Profeessional installed on a vista machine.
I am trying to .pdf some lotus apporach reports into the distiller.
The distiller launches and acrobat launches fine.
When I choose the distiller printer and am asked for a file name and location... I choose a file name and the desktop location.
Then nothing happens. No .pdf of my document is displayed and no file is added anywhere on the hard drive yert alone on the desktop.
Anyone have a location where I can read step by step instrcutions on setting up the distiller printer corectly or help with these simptoms?
    Thank you

You print to the Adobe PDF printer using the PDF Port. That is how AcroTray notes the file that is produced and starts Distiller. Printing to file with the Adobe PDF printer and then opening in Distiller is the base line of PDF creation that all other methods depend on. If this one does not work, then you have a problem. If you can print to file, then open the file in Distiller to get a PDF, then it is typically AcroTray that is the problem. Sometimes you have to kill AcroTray and then restart it.
It sounds like you may need to do a repair on the Acrobat installation. That is done from the control panel. In XP it is in the Add-Remove Programs. It was moved to another icon name in VISTA. It seems MS and Adobe both like to move things around and rename them!
You say you get an error when you check the print-to-file button, or at least that is what I think you said. Is that correct, or were you able to get a PDF with Distiller? Some folks have also found the need to do a repair after a Windows update. You might also want to look at the subversion you have. AA8 is up to either 8.1.7 or 8.2. You can check in the help file and then download any updates from Adobe.com>downloads>updates>Windows Acrobat. Be sure you install any updates in order, they are no cummulative unless it specifically says so.

  • Acrobat 9 Distiller Problems

    Hi,
New to the forum - hopefully someone can help me out.
Specs first - Quark 8.12, Suitcase Fusion 13.2.1, Acrobat Distiller 9.1.0, Mac OSX 10.5.8.
When I create pdfs from Quark etc. - I print them through the print dialogue box (using the acrobat PPD) - save them - and it prints like if it were going to a printer (output device) but creates a pdf. This is the way I have always done it and the way I want to continue to do it.
What I am experiencing is that even though I have specified create "Low Resolution" or "Standard Resolution" pdfs it outputs/saves them as "High Resolution" Pdfs.
The other day it was the opposite I specified "High" and it save a "Low Resolution" pdf.
The high resolution pdfs seem to be extremely large also. Previously in Acrobat Distiller 7 a high resolution pdf file of one particular document I have was 50Mb in size, the same document distilled in Acrobat Distiller 9 gives my a 250Mb pdf file!!
I am also experiencing unwanted rotation of pages with the pdf creation ie a landscape page is distilled (rotate) to a portrait page.
I have tried deleting settings, creating new documents and pasting the information in, pdfing on other computers all with the same results.
What I have found is that if I just use the default acrobat settings - standard, small, high quality etc. the files pdf fine and have expected file sizes etc.
But as soon as I make a custom setting in distiller or use a 3rd party acrobat setting that's when the problem/s occur - large file sizes, rotated pages etc.
What is also weird is if I turn "auto rotate pages" to "off" in acrobat distiller it will rotate the pages (a landscape but distills it to portrait) but if I choose one of the other settings like "individually" it pdfs OK in the right orientation.
Anybody have any ideas of why Distiller (or whatever) freaks out when I change the settings?? (creates massive pdf files, rotates pages etc) I need to be able to make custom distiller settings for various newspapers, magazines etc.
    Thanks

    open problem Document:
1 Apply the the 3rd part Joboption or affect.
    2 Go to Advanced menu.
    3 Choose Optimizer.
    4 Choose Item 2
    Next while in Optimizer menu:
    Choose Fonts
look for any Duplicate Fonts  example: Helvetica Bold Italic
unembed all but one copy (I've seen Pdf's where ther was as many as 1-15 copies of the exact same font)
    Next choose Transparency:
    Flatten Transpariences
Finally save the document (under a new name) and Print one copy of  2 or three pages just to get a feel if document appears correct. If so Use it or send on as needed.
(Please note information is given by an Experienced User of Acrobat. I am not an employee of Adobe.)

  • Font problems after 10.6.7

I'm getting lots of strange behaviour relating to fonts since updating to 10.6.7. This is all in things that used to work perfectly.
PostScript output causes errors in Distiller (problems in font definitions); and manipulating PDF objects can cause embedded fonts to become .... unembedded.
As I understand it, there were lots of security fixes to font handling in the update, but it seems to have caused loads of trouble.
The developers for an app I use, Imposition Wizard, have confirmed that things aren't working as they are supposed to and have filed bug reports with Apple.
However, as I do a lot of work with PostScript and PDFs, I will have to reinstall the OS to 10.6.6.

it's impossible to know how my particular combination of hardware and software (Finale music notation; Distiller; Imposition Wizard) is going to react in the absence of other people doing exactly the same thing.
You don't need other people's experience for this, just an extra drive with a partition where you can install an upgrade and test your requirements before moving to it permanently. Lots of people who cannot afford to have OS update problems work this way. Superduper has a "sandbox" feature which makes this really easy.
I always think that if you're going to reinstall the OS, best do it fresh rather than a clone that may already have some cruft on it.
Perhaps. The main value of the clone is that you can keep working without losing the time required to reinstall, which could be important for a particular user on a particular day.

  • Acrobat 7.0 Standard problem

I had to reinstall this yesterday (I use windows XP if that's relevant) as I was having a problem with it constantly crashing as I was trying to download and open pdfs - I can now do this, but I can't scan documents to pdfs - I use ScandAll 21 with a Fujitsu scanner
When trying to automatically open Adobe Distiller it has the following error message - the instruction at "0x0045c9e5" referenced memory at "0x01bdebdc". The memory could not be "read"
I then have to switch off the computer to exit - it won't let me close ScandAll

Note – my scanner has been switched off since Friday
This afternoon, I went into the adobe website and downloaded and installed, in sequence, the updates for Acrobat 7.0 – including rebooting the computer when necessary
During the process, when I got to 7.10, I got practically the same error message about Distiller i.e. can’t read the memory at the exact same location
It can’t be a scanner problem, as it was switched off and not being used, so it must be a Distiller problem (not that I have any idea what Distiller is)
    How do I fix it?

  • Adobe Acrobat 8 - trouble converting Word Doc to PDF

I currently have Adobe Acrobat 8 and Microsoft Office 2007. Everytime I try to convert a word document or powerpoint to Adobe PDF, the application freezes or says not responding. How can I fix this?

At this point my best recommendation is to go to the help menu in Acrobat and do a repair (you can also do that from the add/remove programs menu in the control panel). After that, you may want to do updates to AA8, though I already mentioned the updates. I am assuming your XP is a 32-bit system.
You should be able to test Distiller by applying it to any PS file. Normally I suggest creating the PS file by simply printing to the Adobe PDF printer with "print-to-file" selected. The printer creates a PS file this way. However, you are indicating this step does not work as I understand it and that would suggest that Distiller is not the problem. If you were successful with the print to file and the problem was at the Distiller step, then that really suggests the need for a repair and possibly and update to fix the Distiller problem.

  • Text in Tag doesn't match what's Visible on the screen (Acrobat 8 Pro)

I have been exporting PDFs from InDesign CS3 as tagged Acrobat 8 compatible PDFs. When bookmarking the PDF, I generally highlight the heading I want to bookmark and do a ctrl-B to bookmark it which copies the text and applies it as the bookmark text.
One thing I've been noticing is that sometimes the visible text is not the text which actually resides in the tag information (Created by ID CS3 - and it's the tag information that gets copied when one highlights and copies the text)
For example my heading read "Human Exposure" and when I make a bookmark from the highlighted heading (or copy and paste it into another application) it reads "Humanan Exposure" And if you look at the tag text, "Humanan" is what's reported. The original document had it right and the visible Acrobat document has it right
I have no clue how this is happening. It's either an InDesign CS3 problem or a Distiller problem
Has anybody else run across this problem?

O.K., I understand what you're getting at now...
No, it is a bold font (Times New Roman Bold).
I'll look again to make sure none of the line has also been bolded.
I'm starting to think that tagging is a little buggy to begin with, because the actual header reads as follows (it's two lines because it's in a double columned format):
    Production, Use,
    and Human Exposure
And if I delete the tag and re-tag it as text, copying the whole selection and pasting it (or bookmarking it) gives "P P P P P P P P"

  • Incorrect font display in pdf document(web view)

    Adobe helpers,
I am encountering a  very peculiar problem with incorrect display of fonts in pdf documents when viewed in a web browser. Briefly, the problem typically affects  the first page of a pdf document, the font being displayed as an unidentified mix of large and very small, skinny type.  Other pages may or may not be affected, and if one back-clicks to the previous page the text often displays the correct font, so the problem is in some (but not all) cases non-persistent.  The problem however is resolved completely if I uncheck the 'display pdf in browser' option  under edit>preferences in adobe reader. Fonts I use include Arial, Cambria, Franklin Gothic Book, and Garamond; as straight-up pdfs, the documents look fine. FYI, I have Adobe reader X 10.0.1 (Win 7) and 9.0 (Win XP sp3) installed on two different machines. Firefox 3.6 and IE9 are equally at fault. FWIW, all the pdf documents begin life as MS Word or Publisher 2010 documents, which are converted to pdf within these applications before publishing to web.   Since I can't control how people choose to view web pdfs, I'm concerned that display of the prone documents is impaired when viewed in a web browser.
Not sure if this is a reader, browser, or distiller problem but this seems a logical place to start looking for answers. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

I've also had problems printing with Reader X.
When printing an attachment from an email in Outlook, if I don't open the attachment first, sometimes it doesn't print correctly as everything shows with the following number or letter. Example 12345 will print as "23456" and invoice will show as "jowpjdf". Even if I open the attachment, sometimes it will print the first page ok, but the next pages will "mppl mjlf uijt".
Never had this problem with previous versions.

  • PDPageSeparations fails or returns invalid results

    Hello All
I have created a plugin for Adobe Acrobat.
I am using the PDPageMakeSeparations() to generate separations to PS files.
After that I use the Acrobat Distiller to convert them back to PDF files.
I am running into the following problems on some PDFs.
    1. PDPageMakeSeparations() fails.
    2. PDPageMakeSeparations() succeeds, but the resulting PS file takes an unusually long  time to distill
with AcrobatDistiller and sometimes the content is wrong.
The PDFs open correctly in Adobe Acrobat and if I use the "Output Preview" to see the separations
they look OK. I presume there is something wrong in the PDF structure or the way Acrobat or Distiller
reads it. I am still gathering sample PDFs that present such problems.
The problem is either in the PDF generating program or Distiller or Acrobat.
My question is where in Adobe I can get support for such problematic PDFs?
    Best regards,
    Nikolai Tasev

What I really need is images of the separations rendered in a memory buffer ( this unfortunately excludes AVPageView as it draws in a window). The separations images are then used in a machine vision quality inspection application  so we can verify the printed result. The separations are not printed but just analyzed.
The only thing in the API for separations I found was PDPageMakeSeparations that is giving a postscript file. Since I render the image with PDPageDraw I need the PS file converted back to PDF.
I have not thought of AVConversion to convert back the PS to PDF, I will try it, this will at least isolate the Distiller problems.
Ho do I achieve programatically "silent print to separated Postscript" ? Do you mean AVDocPrintSeparations() I have tried making this function work, but always received a crash for some reason.
And isn't the PDPageMakeSeparations() the fastest way to get to the separation?
I am using the Adobe Acrobat 9.1 version.

  • "Distiller has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I installed CS3 Design Premium last week. (XP, SP2) I haven't run any of the CS3 updaters yet because I haven't had a chance to research any possible gotchas.
I am repeatedly getting this message:
    Acrobat Distiller
Acrobat Distiller has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    Error signature
    AppName: acrodist.exe AppVer: 8.0.0.456 ModName: acrodistdll.dll
    ModVer: 8.0.0.456 Offset: 001e0ad4
I don't have Distiller open, but I guess it must be running in the background. I create PDFs by exporting from InDesign.
What does this error mean? Should I be very afraid?
    Marlene

Hello, I had this issue with Acrobat 9.0 v.946 but resolved my issue with x64 Vista Ultimate as follows:
    Open Acrobat Distiller
    Click Settings
    Click Font Locations
Open Windows Explorer and Navigate to EACH listed Font Location
Verify there are FONTS in each location, .ttf is a good giveaway.
When you find a Windows Explorer location listed in Distiller with No Fonts do the following:Go back to the Distiller-Settings-Font Locations screen, highlight that location and click the Remove button
Continue viewing folders in Windows Explorer until you have verified that fonts are listed in all the other Distiller-Font Location-folders
Close both Distiller and Windows Explorer
    Reboot your system
    Now here’s the tricky part:
After sign-on Do Not Touch your mouse or keyboard for Five Minutes
Watch your mouse icon as it swirls while loading background applets
Watch your network icon slowly, ever so slowly change from X to O indicating connectivity.
If you screen blanks out, just move the mouse cursor enough to get the screen back and the cursor where you can see it.
After Five Minutes – if you have not received the message--Acrobat Distiller must close--this procedure worked for you.
Hope this helps some of you.
Update: MS Admin Events indicate that a HDD might be corrupted. Chkdsk indicated bad clusters, new drive ordered - in other words - this was the problem all along

  • Adobe Acrobat Distiller 9 Problems

    Hi,
New to the forum - hopefully someone can help me out. I have also tried the Adobe Forums, Quark Forums etc. etc. with no result - all are blaming Apple - so here I am. (Mod's please move this thread if it isn't in the right place).
Specs first - Quark 8.12, Suitcase Fusion 13.2.1, Acrobat Distiller 9.2.0, Mac OSX 10.5.8.

    So just to recapp:
Default Acrobat Distiller settings work but custom or 3rd party settings do not work in Acrobat Distiller. Nor do they "Stick/Stay" in the drop down menu when you select them like the default settings do - the menu defaults back to "default".
I have upgraded to 9.2.0 - reset the printers - Uninstalled the software and reinstalled it all with the same result.
Doesn't matter if I make a PS file etc and drop it onto distiller - still get the same outcome.
    Please Help!!
    Thanks

Got Distiller to work. Seems the problem was with software activation/licensing. I got different software - and a free update to Acrobat 9 Extended - from my merchant and installed it. Distiller now does not crash anymore when starting it up and appears (thus far) stable.
However, I still get an error message at start up:
    Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101
Adobe PDF Settings file read error in PDFX4 2008.joboptions:
    /CheckCompliance out of range
A quick web search shows that this is also not a new problem. Some say that Distiller is not able to create PDF/X4 files and that the error is thus a bug in Distiller itself. Is that true? (I can't find a joboptions file of that name in my system ...)
Do I need to do anything about it or can I just leave it?

  • Acrobat 9 Pro....Distiller / ICC Profile Problem

I have loaded Acrobat 9 Pro 3 times and continue to get following error message every time I reboot computer:  "Distiller can not find your ICC profiles.  Please reinstall the software." Acrobat opens ok but will not print or perfom perform email forwarding as an attachment; Distiller will not initialize.
    Does anyone have a fix???

Adobe Tech support was most helpful on this.  First download the updated
    Distiller ICC profile files at:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4075&fileID= 3790
Unzip the file and copy only the *.icc files (without regard to the subfolders that they are in - in other words, take the files out of each of the subfolders) to the followng folder in Windows 7:
    c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color
These new files will probably overwrite some old ones.
This solved the problem for me.
This is actually the best solution though I found that instead of copying all the .icc files to the windows\sys...  folder, all you need to do is copy the 3 Video files from the RGB folder (VideoHD.icc, VideoNTSC.icc, and VideoPAL.icc).  Once you add these three files to  c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color  you will be good to go.
It seems that this was an error on the part of Adobe in that there is no reason to include Video files for printing.  Nevertheless, the distiller will look for these and return the ICC profile error message if those files are not present.

    Hello,
    I got this problem:
I have Acrobat 8 Pro and Distiller 8.
Everytime i want to use Distiller 8 to generate PDF's containing MathType characters, it makes postscripts incomplete.!!..
We have tried updating Acrobat 8 with no results, then we tried installing the previous version (7.0) and we solve the problem.
Obviously this may not be the best solution to my problem, if anyone know what can be wrong, or what can i do.. i'll be really glad to read it.
    Thanx in advance.

Acrobat 8 is not certified for Win7, particularly the x64 version. If you got the installation to go, the first step is to update AA8 to at least AA8.2. The x64 with XP required at least AA8.2 and I suspect that has not changed. I would suggest updating to the latest, either from the help menu (until no more updates are available) or by downloading the updates from the adobe.com>downloads page. For the latter, download ALL updates after your current version and install them in ORDER. They are not cummulative in most cases. You only need to reboot after the final update. The updates may get you going. If not, you may simply have to upgrade to AA9 or search for what others have been able to do in your situation.

  • Problems converting eps to PDF in Distiller - claims "file is in use"

    Hi,
I've recently starting having a problem in Distiller (the version that same with Acrobat 9). When I try to convert EPS files, I get the message "Cannot open the file. The file is being used by another process". This is a new problem, only a month or two ago it worked fine. The only thing I can think of that may have changed is
    a) Adobe Reader was updated, I believe
    b) in an effort to speed up my computer, I tried removing a number of items from my startup. But I've put them all back in, I think. Here's what's running (although I did start Acrotray manually, and it seems to close when Disteller closes.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi, Bill,
Ok, well, the problem is still here. I have updated the program. Created
new eps files that have never been open in Distiller (or any other
program) .When I try to use Distiller, I get the same message; Cannot
open this file. The file is being used by another process."
i have copied the directory to another drive - no change.
Possible clue: If I try to delete a file from Distiller/File/Open, it
again tells me that the file is already open and so can't be deleted.
How strange that it would think the file is still open. It does this
after a fresh boot, when my first action after booting is to open
Distiller and try to convert an EPS file.
I CAN combine the EPS files within Acrobat by using Combine/Merge files
into a single PDF. But of course that's horribly slow and only an
    emergency solution.
Using Acrobat 9 Pro version 9.2.0
Windows 7 professional service pack 1
    16 gigs of RAM
    Here's what's running:
    any more ideas?
    Thanks!
