Distiller Server 8 and Acrobat 9

Is there a way to run these two side by side? After having installed Acrobat Pro 9, I get an error message when installing Distiller Server 8 stating that it is not compatible with this version of Acrobat. I had been under the impression that the installation process for Distiller Server overwrote any previous installation/variant of Distiller.
Any suggestions?

Adobe doesn't support using different versions of Acrobat on the same Windows computer. You might be able to run Distiller Server on a virtualized Windows computer on the same hardware (but different OS) that is running Acrobat 9.

  • Trouble installing Distiller Server 8 alongside Acrobat Standard 8

After having installed Acrobat Standard 8 on a Windows XP machine (and updating to 8.1), I attempted to install Distiller Server 8 and received the following message: "Distiller Server is incompatible with the version of Acrobat installed on this computer. Please uninstall Acrobat to proceed with the installation of Distiller Server 8. Setup will now terminate."
I've called Adobe Technical Help and Adobe Customer Service, and they only direct me from one to the other resource. The info sheet for Distiller Server 8 states that this combination is supported, yet no one at Adobe appears to be familiar with either product.
I know that if I install Server first and then install Acrobat, it will cause issues with the Server functions - any suggestions?

  • Distiller Server "Could not open file" modal dialog

We're running Distiller Server 8, and I've got a dilemma that I'm hoping is solvable.
This is installed on a Windows 2008 server, with jobs coming into watched folders from our OPI server. Periodically, we get a dialog box that says Acrobat Distiller "Could not open the file: P:\OPI_Data\PDF_Processing\Index_PDFs\out\<filename>". The path specifics will vary, but it's always a path to a file in process... not to a config file or anything like that.
The big problem is that this pops up as a modal dialog and Distiller won't process any more files until someone clicks "OK". On the console. On a server. In the datacenter. We run two shifts, and I'm getting really tired of phone calls at midnight saying "Distiller is hung... can you fix it?"
Is there a way to run Distiller Server in silent mode? Some way to tell it "If you have a problem, just fail that job and move on"? Having to have a server administrator connect in and click a dialog box is just silly.

That seems to have done the trick, thanks.  I don't really like doing forces unless someone who knows more than I recommends it, as I see way too many threads where that has complicated things tremendously.

  • What version of Acrobat is supported by Acrobat Distiller server 8

    Hi,
We are trying to install a software ‘ISIPublisher’ as part of pre-requisite we need to install ‘Adobe Acrobat 9.4.4 (English and Japanese) or X (English) with local postscript driver support’. So we installed Adobe Acrobat X on the server.
During installation it asks for ‘Acrobat Distiller Server’ also as a pre-requisite software.
So we tried to install, Acrobat Distiller server 8 but it asked for uninstalling Acrobat X Pro, so we uninstalled the Acrobat Pro X software and installed software Distiller server.
Now we also need Adobe Acrobat X Pro also installed on the server but while trying to install it ask to uninstall the Acrobat Distiller Server.
So does anyone know what version of Adobe Acrobat need to be used with Acrobat Distiller Server in order to fulfill the requirements.
    Thanks,
    Prashant

It is normally stated that Acrobat itself does not have a license for server use - this is why Distiller Server exists, because it provides a special license for that portion of Acrobat. Now, it may be that ISIPublisher has special arrangements, but you would probably need to contact the makers of ISIPublisher to find out the situation.
I am sure Adobe never expected any need or reason to have both Adobe Acrobat and Distiller Server on the same machine, so any problems need to be resolved by ISIPublisher.

  • Acrobat Distiller Server OR Acrobat Professional

    Hello
I am looking to use the Adobe Distiller API inside my application which will convert Postscript files to PDF.  The application will run on a server and will monitor a particular folder for Postscript files.  The application will create the PDF files into another folder on the server.
We have a dev, test and production server which we will run this application on in some capacity.
I have been recommended by customer services to purchase the Acrobat Distiller Server(100 users) and that this can be deployed on all 3 servers.  Could I not buy 3 licenses of Acrobat Professional instead?
    Thanks in advance.

Ok.  If I buy Acrobat Distiller Server then can I use it on all 3 servers - development, test and production.  So really the 'actual' execution will only be on the production server.
    Thanks.

  • Acrobat Distiller Server 8.0 API problem

Hi im currently using distiller server 8.0 version 3016.102.
I would like to convert Post Script file using API from  ACRODISTXLib. File are not converting because of directory restrictions.
I know that i can omit using "/f" argument running application but what about API usage? Is there a way to bypass directory restrictions
    in API call?
here's a sample code int c# and output
      ACRODISTXLib.PdfDistiller6 p = new ACRODISTXLib.PdfDistiller6();
    p.Create();
      short i = p.FileToPDF(@"C:\49.ps", @"C:\49.pdf", @"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Distiller Server 8\Acrobat\Settings\Standard.joboptions");
      Console.WriteLine(i);

So far as I have ever heard, Distiller Server is technically identical
to the regular Distiller in Acrobat Professional, but with a licence
to run a single copy serving multiple users.
This means it has the same API and limitations, if true.

  • Acrobat & Distiller Server

Is it not possible to have Acrobat and Distiller Server installed on the same computer? I just tried to install on a test machine, and the installer refused to complete, stating that distiller was already available as part of the Acrobat installation.
I would like to have both Acrobat and Distiller Server installed on the same machine for completely different processes.

I can't imagine I'm the only one who has this question - I need to have both Acrobat and Distiller Server installed on a single machine for completely separate automated processes.
I haven't had any luck getting the Acrobat installation to stay in place - the Distiller Server setup process removes it. Does anyone have any experience maintaining both applications on the same machine?

  • Is it possible to call Distiller and Acrobat?

    Hey there again...
Following my question in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1449735?tstart=0 , I need to use the 2 PSs I've made, convert them to PDF and concatenate both of them in a single PDF file.
What I need to know is:
do I need to go to Applescript to invoque Distiller and Acrobat?
Or is it possible in ExtensionScript to call Distiller and Acrobat to execute this?
If it is possible to do it in ExtensionScript how may it could be done?
    Thanks again for the help!!

No, you can’t do this in ExtensionScript. The only version where you can communicate with Acrobat from InDesign directly via ExtensionScriptis is InDesign 5.0.3, Acrobat 8.0.0 (tested in Windows XP SP3). Here is an example.
But it is possible to trigger an Acrobat JS from AS. I guess you can print two ps-files to Distiller’s hot folder.
Another script may monitor the hot folder on a certain interval, say, every minute: this can be done in AS. When the PDFs in the “Out” folder are ready, the Acrobat JS merges them saving it to another folder and deleting the original PDFs.

  • PDF Printer and Acrobat fail to open or run or anything else.

    Hi
Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 has been installed on this TS2008 (VM) server for over a year without problem until recently.
To start, the Adobe PDF printer stopped creating PDFs. When it worked a user would print and the PDF (creation) progress bar dialog box would open and the Adobe Distiller icon would appear in the taskbar (swirling) and a PDF would be created. Now we get the progress bar but no Distiller icon and no PDF is created.
Then Adobe Acrobat Standard (editor) failed to open any PDFs. We installed Adobe Acrobat 9 reader which opened PDFs for a while and now that has stopped working.
After many uninstalls, reinstalls, reg cleans we decided to open a case with Adobe who told us that Acrobat 9 is not supported on Server2008. The customer purchased Adobe Acrobat X.
We installed Acrobat X (in terminal server mode) and all was well for around 24hrs and then it all stopped working again.
I have since uninstalled reinstalled again. I created 1 PDF and after that the progress bar just hangs. We performed a controlled user logon to the server and all was going well until one user logged in and he isnt able to open Acrobat to read or edit PDFs.
There are no events logs which appear to directly relate to this. We were concerned about a HpBIDI driver which no longer errors but we do have a large amount of EventID 7036, ServerControl Manager Eventlog provider and EventID 4 SpoolerWin32SPL.
We have since been back to Adobe Support who advised us to unplug the network cable which we cannot do as its a hosted VM (with no access to the the VM console). He then asked us to remove the server from the Domain which we can't do as this is a single live server. They intend to come back to me!
We are really at a loss here for idea's, can anyone please provide some clues?
    Thanks

    Hi billu54860732,
Try running the Repair command from under the Help menu to see if it corrects the problem.
The probable cause of the error is, multiple processes of Acrobat/Reader running in the background.
If 'Repair' doesn't resolve the issue kindly follow the steps mentioned below and check, if it helps.
    1) Press CTRL+ALT+DEL together
    2) Go to the Task Manager
    3) Go to Processes in the Task Manager and kill al the processes related to Acrobat/Reader.
    4) Launch Reader/Acrobat (It should launch without an error).
To further isolate the issue you might want to run Acrobat/Reader in an environment where no other services are running.
This can be achieved via "MSCONFIG"
    1) Click on start type run
    2) Type MSCONFIG in the run prompt
    3) Go to services and click on hide all Microsoft services
    4) Click disable all
    5) Go to the startup in configuration window and disable all startup items
    6) Restart your system
    7) Launch Acrobat/Reader
If, it is launched without an error, a service on your system is conflicting with Acrobat/Reader.
Let me know if issue persist.

  • Configuration of Distiller Server

    Hello,
i got some issues about the install of Adobe Acrobat on a Windows Server. So i hope this is the right forum - if not please move the thread or let me know where to ask for help.
    Let's start with some facts:
    Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2 64bit
    Adobe Acrobat Professional v7 ( Upgraded from v6 )
Clients use Win XP Prof. SP3 32bit
So this is what i did:
I installed Acrobat and uprgraded it. After that i got an Adobe PDF printer installed on the server. For installing the PDF printer on the clients i used the
Adobe  Universal PostScript Windows Driver Installer 1.0.6 .
Installation works without errors and after that it i got a PDF printer like on the server. Distiller with its "In" and "Out" Boxes works fine but when I print out of MS PowerPoint (Office 2003) by using the PDF printer there are problems with colours of images and especially with transparent text boxes.
Is this a know problem or did i do something completely wrong?
    thx for any reply!
PS: Excuse my bad english - its good old Germany here

No, Distiller Server is a seperate product:

Sorry but did anyone of you read the Wiki Link? Adobe Acrobat v6 included the Distiller Server v6. I installed it on my server and it its working - i just got problems with the tranparent text boxes while printing out of Office 2003.
The link you posted is aubout Distiller Server v8. That is a seperate product.
    So please back to topic...

  • What is the cost of Adobe Distiller Server?

Hi, My project requirement is to convert Word Doc files to Pdf files using ASP.Net 2.0. I am interested to use Adobe Distiller Server for this. Can anyone please guide me as to how much this product will cost me and the Server Licence for upto 100 users. Also how long does it take to buy the product from Adobe?

Acrobat Distiller Server can only convert Postscript to PDF. You may look at this product:

  • Distiller Server 8: SDK? API?

Is there an API or SDK of any kind for Adobe Distiller Server 8? We have a custom solution running Distiller, but we need a Multi-threaded solution at this point. We have a number of possibilities for custom solutions to be built using a Software Development Kit, but no information about Distiller Server.
    Is Distiller Server truely multi-threaded?
Does it use any load-balancing code?
Is there an SDK or API available?
Where can I find this information?
I have called Adobe 6 times now and they keep telling me that someone will call me back but no one has. I need these questions answered before we can move forward with re-development.
Any information would be more than what I have gotten from Adobe so far.

  • What version of distiller is included with Acrobat XI?

Looked through all the marketing documentation and cannot get an answer.

(Thanks for pointing out that Distiller Server is due to be discontinued. According to http://www.adobe.com/products/distiller-server.html it will be as of May 31, 2013)
You cannot use the Distiller that comes with Acrobat on a server. It is not licensed for server use.

    Hi All,
We have server version of Acrobat Distiller server in the workflow where it processes morethan 2000 PS files/Day.The issues we are facing is modal dailog of file missing info (File not found, etc) blocks processing of next file until modal dialog is closed. Is there any possibility to supress this message or set this log as mail delivery?

I see this question again and again, but no answer. Is there a method for supressing these frustrating (and production-stopping) dialog pop ups?

  • Contribute "low on memory" and Acrobat won't redraw

I have two issues that I believe may be related.  First here's my system information
    WinXP SP3
    Intel Core2Duo E6550 = (2.33GHz)
    3GB RAM
    GeForce 8600GTS 512 MB Video
Running two 19" monitors, (at 1440x900 each)
Creative Suite Premium 2.0 (InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2, IllustratorCS2, Acrobat 7 Professional, BridgeCS2, GoLive CS2Version Cue is disabled.)
Production Studio Premium 1.0 (Premiere Pro 2, Encore DVD 2, After Effects 7, Audition 2)
Contribute CS3, (including Bridge CS3, but I don't use it, I use Bridge CS2 for everything).
First Issue.  Intermittently, in both Adobe Reader 9, and Acrobat 7.0 pdf files that I have open will not display in the window properly, unless I reduce the size of the window to something quite small.  It will show the desktop in behind the window, or if I open a window on top, it shows that window even when I've moved it.
The second problem is similar, but occurs in Contribute CS3 and is always accompanied by a "Your system is low on memory..." error, until I reduce the size of the Contribute window, at which point, it is so small that it becomes unuseable.
The only other program that I have open at the time is Outlook 2007, with a couple of messages.
As this is happening, I open the Task Manager, see that there is plenty of available Physical Memory, and the CPU Usage is very low, under 10%.  I've set my virtual memory paging file to Custom Size of 4591MB.
The only way to fix it is to reduce the size of windows or close all the programs.  These two problems occur independently of each other.  Sometimes when I'm just trying to open a PDF file.
3GB should be plenty to run Contribute and Outlook, or Acrobat and Bridge.
What the heck is going on?

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes I have tried that, but to no avail.  The crazy thing is that it only really happens after I've been working in Contribute for a while.  Sometimes an hour or more.  Then it just starts doing this.
The redraw problem also affects other programs, that are not Adobe programs.  For example, when I open a Remote Desktop Connection to the web server where I am publishing, while this problem is occuring, the screen will not "draw" properly either.
I have a feeling that there is something strange about how Contribute, and Acrobat, and Windows share the memory, either the system memory, or the graphics memory.
Could this also be a problem caused by having both CS2 and CS3 programs installed?
    Chris
