Distiller

Why does Acrobat 9 Pro Distiller crash so often in the Esko Artwork Odystar 4.1 workflow? It runs on a Mac Pro running OS X Server 10.6.8.

(not the fiscal)

Distiller isn't crashing. If you look at the log, you will see that Distiller is detecting an error in the PostScript being distilled and thus, cannot produce an output PDF file. In particular, an ioerror is detected in the data presented to a defined procedure ImagemaskDistiller. Whatever is generating the PostScript file is generating incorrect PostScript.
By the way, pure PDF workflows are much more reliable than those in which conversions in and out of PostScript are involved. But I suspect you know that already!

  • When placing a PDF created with Distiller, I only get Crop and Media as import options -- I need it to crop to the Trim! PLEASE HELP!

I'm having a MAJOR problem placing PDF files in InDesign CS4...
When I try to place a PDF that has been created in Distiller, the ONLY import options I can choose are CROP and MEDIA. I need it to crop to the TRIM, but that option is grayed out. The PDFs I'm trying to place were created in-house, and converted from Post Script files to PDFs using Distiller. We use PDF/X-1a equivalent settings when creating our PDFs.
If I export the file as a PDF and then try to place it into a CS4 file, I am able to select Trim as an option.
ALSO, if I open the Distiller PDF in Acrobat and then save it (without changing anything), I am able to select Trim as an option. A workaround I have found is to open all of the PDF files in Acrobat, save them to my desktop, and then save over the ones I need to place. Here's the problem with that: I work for a publishing company, and need to place hundreds of ads for each issue of our publications, and it adds a lot of time if I have to go and re-save everything just to be able to place all the ads.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I need to get this figured out so we can use CS4 for all of our publications again. -- We've gone back to using CS3 until I can get this figured out...

    Steve,
Thanks for the reply, but my PDFs all have trim boxes on them. If I try to place the same PDF in InDesign CS3, it gives me Trim as an option. Also, if I open the PDF and save a copy to my desktop, I am able to select Trim as an option when placing the PDF, and I didn't change anything about it.
I've been trying to see if it's something with the Print Preset settings I'm using, but I can't find anything that seems like it would affect how InDesign would read the Trim area of the PDF.
I've attached 2 PDF files. One that was created with Distiller, and one that was exported from InDesign CS4. The Distiller one doesn't show Trim as an option in CS4, but the exported one does.... but they started out as the same ad.  Ugh!  Help me please!

  • Adobe Distiller 7.0 and 6.0 quits on Mac OS 10.4

    Hi,
Distiller 7.0 installed on Mac OS 10.4 on G5 is quitting for only one login which is conencted to a X server. However it is working for all other local users on the system. We have installed Suitcase on the system, even after disabled Suitcase during startup, problem remains same.
I have tried remove all the Adobe preference, Suitcase preference and cache, still Distiller quiting.
I have tried install Distiller 6.0, the same problem remains.

  • Photoshop to pdf via distiller help please?

I'm trying to convert a photoshop cs4 file to pdf using distiller. When I save as an EPS file, then run it through distiller I get this error:

I tried printing to Adobe PDF in photoshop, and that seems to work but the fonts don't embed, and the publisher requires a distiller produced file.
I could swear that when I did a test on an earlier version of the file it worked just fine, but have tried everything I can think of and can't seem to get it to work now. Perhaps I messed up a setting somewhere or missed a step? I'm new at this so that's entirely possible. Thanks for helping!

I see the issue you are having. A publisher would likely want you to use either the print or press settings file, or supply you one to use. I use one developed by IEEE for their publications. With where you are, if the PDF that you save from PhotoShop is what you are looking for, simply print that one to the Adobe PDF printer and create a new PDF. The fonts should be embedded. It is not clear if the fonts are just not embedded when you print from PhotoShop or they do not come through as fonts (but are simply graphics of the fonts). If they are fonts but just did not embed, then go back and try using the print or press settings. If needed, enter the options for the settings file and be sure that the fonts are set to always embed (and likely as subset fonts). If any fonts are not embedded, change that setting. In my AA7, the standard settings exclude a lot of fonts that are characteristic of Adobe. Those fonts are both embedded in the Press and Print options.
Don't know if I have helped, but it basically what you seem to need. I have given two options that may meet your needs. Bill

  • How can I get a Distiller dialog box in Illustrator CS5 which is exactly the same as Distiller?

I would like to know if there is some type of plug-in, etc. out there that would allow me to have all the functionality of a Distiller dialog box when I save a PDF out of Illustrator CS5. Right now, I just have what comes installed with Illustrator. It's a stripped down version of what you would find in distiller.

When you save a PDF out of Distiller it doesn't just have different options, it's an entirely different program. It doesn't do things the same way, so it can't have the same options. Saving from Distiller is in many ways better, expecially in that transparency isn't flattened.
What specific options are you looking for?

  • Why is my Distiller 9.0 randomly choosing a folder on my Mac and distilling everything in it, and dropping the PDFs into another random folder, when I boot up the program?

Acrobat Distiller 9, upon boot up, will sometimes just pick a random folder on my Mac or on a network drive over our server and start distilling all the files within that folder. Then if the files convert to a PDF, it will move them into another random folder of its choice. It's like the Distiller is creating its own set of Watch Folders without my consent or permission. All I do is start up the program when I log onto my Mac. When the program finishes booting up, it just connects to a completely random folder and starts distilling. It never connects to the Watch Folders I have created, just connects to whatever it wants when it boots up.

Certainly weird, but you might want to post in the Acrobat forum as you aren't using Distiller Server (discontinued and never available on Mac).
Best not to set up watched network folders, there's no way to force a mount to be done, and Distiller is not for sharing anyway.

  • The distiller is not working properly.

I have a PDF file that I scanned into my computer.  It scanned in at 18 MB, which is to large to send via email.  Until a week ago, my Acrobat distiller was working fine and it allowed me to re-print to PDF an select 'smallest file size,' which worked great to reduce a PDF file small enough to email.  Now when I send this 18 MB file through the distiller and select 'smallest file size,' it made the 18 MB file into a 55MB file.  When I tried it again, it made the 55 MB file into a 113 MB file.  What is going on here?  This is crippling my ability to send important contracts to clients.

I would try one of the preflight tools to reduce the graphics. Not sure why you are getting the growth. If you have an example you can post some place, it would help us to look at it and see what might be going on. The example does not have to be one of the contracts, just something that does the same thing when you reprint.
Also, it is important to let us know which versions of Windows and Acrobat you are using.

  • How can I open a PDF generated by Distiller, in Designer?

When I open the form in Designer, it prompts me to enter a password. Before I go back to the client, I wanted to know if a pdf generated by Distiller can be opened and edited in Designer?
    What is distiller used for?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're all users here.
Depending upon your version of OS X and your version of Safari, as detailed in the Adobe help document links below, Adobe pdf documents created with the latest releases may require an (updated free) Adobe plug-in for Safari, or (free) Adobe Reader in order to display properly.

  • Distiller 8.1.2 crashing on open in Leopard 10.5.2

I just upgraded to Acrobat 8, did all the updates through 8.1.2, but when I try to open Distiller, it just quits (with the "unexpectedly" dialog). Also, when trying to print to the Acrobat PDF 8.0 printer, I see a flash of a process bar, the printer icon momentarily shows the file and that it's opening Distiller, but nothing.
    What am I missing?
    Notes:
I verified all my fonts with FontAgent3, deleted all the caches with Smasher, ran the Repair Installation in Acrobat. FileVault is off. Rebooted. Bowed to the gods in San Jose and Cupertino.
    MacPro 4G, OS X 10.5.2

I tend to think that if a new user account works as expected then there is a permissions issue, though I guess it could be a permissions issue with a font. If you boot with the Startup CD you can probably fix the permissions in the original account. Although, I've seen a new user work and repairing all permissions fail before.
You can attempt to remove the fonts you believe may be damaged. if you don't know which fonts this might be, try removing all but the basic system fonts, then adding them back in chunks. There may be an easier way to do this nowadays. I haven't had to deal with this problem in many years.
I work with multiple partitions, keeping a partition named "Base" that has a minimal OS on it specifically for problems like this. I log into this and run Disk Utility whenever things start to go haywire. I keep my installed fonts to a minimum.

  • Unable to create the temporary folder. Error 183 when starting Distiller

New information discovered - see end of message!
Full error message is (window title is Acrobat Distiller):
"Unable to create the temporary folder
Error: 183 - cannot create a file when that file already exists."
I have no idea what file or what folder it is referring to. This is on an x86 Vista notebook and the message comes up when starting the notebook and also if you manually start Distiller 8. Updating did not help, nor did turning off the UAC, or running Distiller as Administrator. In the latter case, Distiller will open correctly, but the next time you need to use it, it fails. With the UAC turned off, the behavior is for it to show the Distiller window for a fraction of a second and close immediately. I also gave the user full rights to the C:\Program Files\Adobe folder and lower. Made no difference.
Coincidental with this is that the PDFMOfficeAddIn.dll add-in will not enable in Word - when it is checked, and I hit OK, I get the message:
"The connected state of Office Add-Ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed."
All of this is going on when logged in as an administrator. I have seen folks post about this issue, but no answers that actually fiux the problem, just suggest what I have already tried. Anyone seen this one?
The user is highly mobile, so I am not going to have a chance to work on her computer again until next week.
    NEW INFO
I tried removing and reinstalling as administrator and the problem remains. However while trying to troubleshoot, I discovered some more details.
The message is being thrown when acrotray.exe is started as a process in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Control Set\Run and then tries to run acrodist.exe (which fails, BTW). If I don't let it run there and run acrotray, exe as administrator, then acrodist.exe runs as a process without an error. Additionally, stopping it from running in the registry, and then starting MS Word, the Acrobat add-in does load and even though there is an error thown, it still creates the PDF! I have other Vista 32 notebooks running various Acrobat versions with no problems.
Another key thing I found out is that Acrobat started throwing the error after an HP Scanjet 8400 and its software were installed. I tried explicitly giving the user (already an administrator) full rights to the Acrobat, HP and Read IRIS directories. Did not help the problem. I have to think that there is some interaction there, but sure don't know what it is.

what i did to eliminate that error message, i don't think it eliminated th
e problem but now i can reboot and log in OK, was 2 things:
i went into my system registry and unchecked to start at startup and then disavled it.
i also had to go to each adobe icon, right click, go to properites, and than make all selections set to be administator.

  • How to get Distiller to display as a printer in my programs

Hi there, I recently re-installed and re-activated Creative Suite 3 on my Windows 8 computer, but Distiller does not display as a printer option in any of my programs. I already uninstalled and re-installed the bunch. Still no use. How do I fix this? Any suggestions?

    Hi Sariensteyn,
This version of suite wasn't tested with windows 8.
I would suggest to upgrade to the latest version and that should help.

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.1.0 distiller ICC profile error asks for reinstall

I have Windows XP professional, SP3.
My Systems Administrator recently upgraded my Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 to 9.1.0 and since then I keep getting an error that says: Distiller cannot find its standard ICC profiles. Please reinstall Adobe Acrobat to correct this problem.
    This error happens when:
    1. I print to Adobe from a web page (IE 7.0.5730.11 or Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.20)
    2. I try to print to any printer from certain websites, such as the usps.com, where I print all our postage labels from.
    3. Occasionally when I start up the PC.
Sometimes I get the error but it still pdfs the page. Usually, though, it hangs and then Acrobat and the web browser close.
I seem to be able to pdf MS Office 2007 items (Word, Excel) and my Filemaker Pro Advanced 10 records. I guess it's when I'm "printing" to Adobe as opposed to "saving as pdf" that I have this problem.
Acrobat 8 worked fine. My Sys Admin has reinstalled the upgrade twice (after trying a repair which didn't work) to no avail. He can't find any documentation about this error at Adobe, so he's going to uninstall it and switch me back to Adobe 8.
I do all of the pdf'ing of our deliverable documents at my company and I would like to have the latest edition of Acrobat. If anyone knows of anything I can do, please let me know.
    Thanks!
    Stephie

Adobe Tech support was most helpful on this.  First download the updated
    Distiller ICC profile files at:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4075&fileID= 3790
Unzip the file and copy only the *.icc files (without regard to the subfolders that they are in - in other words, take the files out of each of the subfolders) to the followng folder in Windows 7:
    c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color
These new files will probably overwrite some old ones.
This solved the problem for me.
This is actually the best solution though I found that instead of copying all the .icc files to the windows\sys...  folder, all you need to do is copy the 3 Video files from the RGB folder (VideoHD.icc, VideoNTSC.icc, and VideoPAL.icc).  Once you add these three files to  c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\color  you will be good to go.
It seems that this was an error on the part of Adobe in that there is no reason to include Video files for printing.  Nevertheless, the distiller will look for these and return the ICC profile error message if those files are not present.

  • Memory could not be read Distiller

I'm getting a memory could not be read error whenever i try to print to PDF.
The error shows when the distiller loader is at creating fonttables.
Tried opening Distiller directly but gives the same issue,
I'm not able to open the Distiller program cause it will go to the error while startup is loading (again the error comes up when it's creating fonttables)
    Tried sofar:
Reinstalling Adobe PDF and Distiller. (after full removal)
         Running in safe mode.
Looking on google for the answer (countless hours of searching without a working solution)
printing a file without any special fonts to no avail.
Please any help to resolve this issue would be much appreiciated.

Do you have a lot of extra fonts installed on your system? In the past there have been problems with huge numbers of fonts. Also, what version of Acrobat are you using and on what OS?

  • Distiller "can't find font" error with MS-Gothic and ArialUnicodeMS

Hi. I'm tried to verify that Distiller (both 9 and XI) and PDF Generator (11.0 SP1) are able to generate PDFs from Postscript files using a variety of fonts. Almost every font that I tried works perfectly fine, but MS-Gothic and ArialUnicodeMS both fail with "can't find font" errors. I've verified font configurations in both Distiller and PDF Generator, and lots of other fonts work fine. I've also verified that the two fonts are installed, enabled, and can be used in other applications (e.g., MS Word). In fact, I can generate PDFs from MS Word documents on the same server that use both of those fonts. I suspect the errors are misleading in that those apps can find the fonts, but are unable to open or use them for some reason. I've been able to replicate this behavior both on Windows Server and Mac OS X.
Has anyone seen behavior like this? Any suggestions on how to get more information out of these Adobe apps to get a better idea what the real error is?
    JJR

Addirional note: This is a java class within a JavaFX application if that is relevant.
It does seem to be relevant - if I create the same class as part of a Java application rether than a JavaFX application it compiles without error. Is the imported java.awt.GraphicsEnvironment different in the tow cases??
