Distorted audio playback with LP9 and Onyx 400F

Hi. I've got a new 21.5" iMac (intel) running 10.6.2 and I've been using an Onyx 400F and Logic Pro 9 with no problems until this afternoon. I know that Mackie have discontinued support for the 400F (frankly I can't see the difference in support from when it wasn't discontinued...) and the last Mac drivers were for Tiger etc etc. However, without any "adjustments" I was just able to plug the Onyx into the Mac and it worked. However, when I came in this afternoon and woke the machine up, all the audio now plays back distorted. I've googled and not found any real answers. I've tried adjusting the buffer size up and down. If I drop it to 32 samples, I get (expected) glitching, but the distortion is still there. Once I raise it to 64, the glitching goes away, but the distortion stays. Taking it a step at a time all the way up to 1024, there's still distortion.
This was working fine last night. There's been no software updates applied. Nobody has installed any software of any kind, no system settings have been changed. I've power cycled the Mac and the Onyx. I've disconnected the firewire and reconnected it. Logic detects it fine in each case, but I can't get clean audio out of it anymore. I've tried switching sample rates and bit depths. I can't think of anything else and there's not much help out there in google land. Percussive maintenance is the next step...
If anyone has any ideas, it would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks,
Geoff.

Hi there,
I've been asking on various audio forums about whether the Mackie 400f works okay with Snow Leopard (seeing as the drivers are out-of-date).
At the moment I'm running the 400f with Windows XP, but I want to switch to Mac(Book Pro) and I don't want to downgrade the operating system. Have you properly fixed this distortion problem or is it a temporary fix? I've read about it elsewhere, and it worries me -- perhaps it would be better to swap the 400f now to a newer interface while it's still under warranty...
Thanks for any help!

  • Audio playback is clipped and has low volume

Hi, I'm hoping that someone can help me debug my audio problems.
The problem is that audio playback is clipped and has low volume.
The details of my setup are as follows:
    - An onboard soundcard (ASUS M4A78LT-M-LE motherboard), identified as Intel HDA in dmesg:
    description: Audio device
    product: SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
    vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
    physical id: 14.2
    bus info: pci@0000:00:14.2
    version: 00
    width: 64 bits
    clock: 33MHz
    capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list
    configuration: driver=snd_hda_intel latency=64
    resources: irq:16 memory:f9ff4000-f9ff7fff
    - ALSA (snd_hda_intel driver) and Pulseaudio
My ALSA mixer settings (which were used in the recording shown in this post) are at pastebin.
The mixer settings were chosen so that all "dB gain" is 0.00 for all columns in alsamixer.
Recording an MP3 (played at full volume) from the Stereo Mixer source in audacity I gives output which looks clipped and has low volume (link).
This occurs with any MP3 and any other sound source (Youtube in Chromium, etc.)
The problem does not occur when I boot into Windows XP, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem.
I'm also attaching a screenshot of my alsamixer playback screen for the soundcard (link)
    Thanks for any assistance!

    Hi,
I have the same problem since December 2011 with a similar Mainboard (Asus M4A78T-E).
    Did you resolve your problem?
    Thanks

  • ATV (Gen3) Newest updates severely distort audio playback from iTunes. Please Help!!!

I just updated my iTunes and ATV (Gen3) to the newest versions and immediately noticed severe distortion in audio playback from iTunes library. No hardware changes have been made and yesterday the sound quality was just fine. I have one running an optical cable into a high end receiver and another running off a HDMI cable into the TV with powered Speakers for output. I checked both systems on all inputs and it's only the Apple TV with the distortion. Someone please help as that is the only thing I really use on the device. iTunes version 12.0.1.26

Weird, I just opened iTunes to add some songs and now its playing fine.
Though I still can't figure out how to change the columns and having them stick to what I want .

  • Delay on audio playback with FiiO e10 USB DAC

    Hello,
My USB DAC playback is not working correctly. When I start the playback of any music stream, it takes a while (around a second or less) before I actually hear anything. The problem also occurs if short silent periods are present in the audio file/stream. The only way I can listen these problematic files/streams without the skipping is by keeping the master channel active all the time by playing some other audio along with problematic stream.
I have had this problem on openSUSE 12.3 too, and I was not able to solve it there either.
On Windows 7, however, this very same problem occurs only if I choose to use any of the 24 bit audio depth settings for the DAC.
Here is a screenshot to demonstrate the Windows scenario:
    http://s10.postimg.org/xzwx302jd/fiio_delay.png
I have been trying out various things things without success, such as:
    From Arch's PulseAudio wiki:
    - Glitches, skips or crackling
    - Setting the default fragment number and buffer size in PulseAudio
    - Laggy sound
    - Realtime scheduling
Here is some general information about my current Arch system and sound settings:
    OS: Arch Linux x86_64
    Kernel Release: 3.14.1-1-ARCH
    WM: KWin
    DE: KDE
    Processor Type: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz
    Sound settings: ALSA + PulseAudio
This problem did exist even before I installed Pulseaudio.

emeres wrote:Does this behaviour continue with pulseaudio killed? Use alsa directly to narrow the problem down first.
Yes. It did exist even before I installed pulseaudio.
emeres wrote:Check different resolutions, sample rates and channels. Try to determine the lowest buffer and period size, that the DAC accepts.
If by this you mean this, I went through that guide and it did not make any difference.
I found out that sometimes some audio formats, such as wav or mp3 do not produce this flaw. I gathered stats about this here. VLC was used for playback and displaying the information. Amarok behaves similarly.
emeres wrote: You probably load snd-usb-audio module with no options. Try loading it with "nrpacks" using different settings (default is 8, try 1, 2).
I am not sure if this is the way to do it, but I followed this guide and added file: "usbsound.conf" to "/etc/modprobe.d/". usbsound.conf has line: "options snd_usb_audio nrpacks=2". I tried changing the nrpacks to various values and booted after every change, but it did not make difference to the audio skipping.
What could it be that .xm (and every other tracker music format) and .ogg files are not playing like mp3 or wav?
Sorry for delayed reply and about that image

  • Poor audio playback with iTunes 12.1.2.27

Just updated to this version today. Now the audio volume fades in and out during playback. Didn't have the problem before the update. Running Windows 7

Check that you have the latest version of QuickTime (7.7.6) installed
Try varying the Play Audio Using setting in Edit > Preferences > Advanced (you'll need to restart iTunes for changes to take effect).  Most users experiencing playback issues who've found that this resolves the issue have reported that setting this to Direct Sound works.
If neither of these produce improvement (and assuming you're running a 64-bit edition of Windows) try installing this alternative version of iTunes:
iTunes 12.1.2 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
The "for older video cards" label is somewhat misleading; as with the previous 12.1 and 12.1.1 releases this provides a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installed, the same as all "64 bit" versions of iTunes prior to 12.1.  As well as video card incompatibility this version may address issues with playback as well as integration with third party tools.
For the third option, see also turingtest2's user tip on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps that may be necessary to completely remove all components of iTunes prior to re-installing.

  • Corrupted DVd playback with VLC and dvdnav

When I play dvds with VLC I get corrupted playback like this:
    http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/4964/v … 903ul9.png
Every other type of video i've tried plays just fine. Also if I play the vobs directly the playback is ok. So I'am assuming that the problem is releated to libdvdnav.
I have Acer Aspire 1350 -laptop with KM400 chipset. I've tried the default VIA-driver that comes with X and I also compiled the OpenChrome 0.3.0 RC -driver, but it didn't solve the problem.
I don't know if this problem is caused by OpenChrome-driver, VLC or libdvdnav. Currently I'am using ArchLinux. The problem happens also in all Debian/Ubuntu-variants and OpenSuse. PCLinuxOS is the only distribution I've tried that plays the dvds without corruption.
I also tried Ogle player and it's playback is also similarly corrupted.
Does anyone know what could cause this?

I've the same issue and I don't know how to fix it (my card is an nvidia go5200 32mb which is supported only by nvidia legacy driver which are no more available in arch).

  • Audio error with garageband and external usb audio interface

I am using Garageband 2.0.3. under ios 8.0.2 on my iPad 3 and via camera adapter a USB audio interface Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 or a Presonus iTwo.
When I start Garageband, it works well, the audio interfaces are recognized and I can record a track.
As soon as I switch from instrumtent to track view, the audio path is completely disturbed and all I can hear is some noise from the speaker.
Then I have to unplug the usb cable and plug it in again. Then audio works until I switch back to the instrument menu.
When I use the headphone output only there is no problem with Garageband and everything works fine.
Other applications audio applications don't show any error with each of the two audio interfaces.
Any feedback is very much appreciated, thanks.
    Harald

I have this exact issue.  However, I tried the Loopy app after after GB crashed and received an error message saying that core audio is not available.  Rebooting resolves but the problem repeats.  Any suggestions as to fixes?  Btw; I have no such problem with Ipad 2 and ios 7.

Suspect Windows 'pushed update' changed original IDT High Defition Audio CODEC becasue original worked fine since HP Pavilion dm4/Windows 7 was purchased. Sound plays, but periodically buzzes and is distorted. Have tried both rolling back driver and installing your Support driver sp57966.exe with BIOS load. Still no change, same distorted sound both times. Is there a way to return to original CODEC?

    Hi,
Have you tried using Recovery Manager to reinstall your original IDT Audio Driver - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the relevant document on the link below.

  • Pulling Hair Out! Need Help: Adobe Prem 6.0 Distorted Audio playback in Timeline

    O/S = Windows 2000 Pro
    Adobe Premier 6.0
I am in the process of compiling a project in Adobe Premier 6.0, where, up until yesterday, it was playing back perfectly in the Timeline window. Unfortunately now, when I  preview the project in the Timeline window, the audio has become distorted, out of sync, and is now 'slower' than the video footage (sounds a bit like a Darlek!), this also happens when I view a clip in the Monitor window. I closed this project down and started a new one, importing a seperate 'audio only' file, but had the same problem. I then opened a previous project that has always played back perfectly but that too had the same audio/video problem. I have checked the frame rate and the speed and both are correct and ok. Incidentely, the audio and video are in perfect sync when I play any clip in the Project Window!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone help me. I am pulling my hair out on this one!
    Thank you.

  • Totally new to this. Audio problems with device and output volume.

Hi, I just purchased Logic Express and Im having trouble with the levels. Im going through an Alesis USB mixer. The problem is, right when I press the record button on a track I start getting a very high hiss and an over distorted sound with my guitar. I played around with the levels a bit and it seems that when I go to the computers audio setting and lower the output volume it goes away. I dont understand why output would effect what Im recording. I don't want to have to lower the outpt volume because then I wont be able to hear the track i just recorded when Im recording on another. If anyone knows what is actually going on and how to solve this problem, any advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi, missiontorock.
Could this be a "through-feedback" kind of problem? I don't get any kind of distortion or hiss running through my Edirol M100-FX USB mixer.
Depending on how the Alesis is configured, you might be feeding the same signal from the mixer to the computer, getting that signal back from the computer, and then sending it on to the computer again. This is particularly likely since you report that the problem goes away when you lower the output volume from the computer.
You might look for a 'mixdown' switch on your mixer.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • E93z All in One I want Audio playback through speakers and headphones at the same time

    Hi there,
As the subject line reads I am hoping to enable playback through both the headphone and internal speakers on the E93z All in One unit I have.
Is there is currently a way to do this with the Lenovo HD Audio software for the Realtek system? It detects the headphones and does the typical shut off of the internal speakers however no option to enable playback through both seems to exist.
Running Windows 7 Pro 32 bit.
I cannot enable stereo mix (by right clicking in the playback area of the sound settings in Windows) to try and come up with a work around.
I have tried re-installing the drivers and not luck with more options to do this.
I have tried un-installing the Lenovo HD audio software and still no luck using the vanilla Windows 7 software.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Asad A wrote:
Well basically I want to hook in some external speakers via the headphones jack and the more speakers the better, I just figure if there's a way to have 4 speakers instead of just two it'd be cool, why let the internal speakers go to waste?
Do you know if plugging in headphones physically cuts off the internal speakers or if it's a software/driver thing?
    Thanks to all who've replied
I'm pretty sure it's all in the OS, since the level control is right at the top. You can actually customize sound profiles individually for headphones or the built-in speaker, or any other sound devices. You can also use Bluetooth headphones (or a headset) or USB output devices. As far as I know, only one can be selected (in System Preferences) even if multiple ones are plugged in.

  • Help! Premiere Pro runaway timeline playback with multicam and Cineform Neo clips

    Hello,
I have experienced a problem with a "runaway timeline" in Premiere Pro CS5.5 - not always, but fairly often. Once playback begins, nothing short of restarting the computer can stop it.  I don't know if this is a bug that needs fixing or something else.  I am a recent Mac / FCP7 switcher to the Adobe product line.
My machine is a Sandy Bridge i7 quad core chip on Windows 7 with 16GB of RAM.  I do not have an Nvidia card in the system yet.  I am running Premiere Pro 5.5 using a multicam timeline with Cineform Neo clips at 1080p (four camera angles).  The initial "live edit" of the multicam went well, and I am now trying to go back and tweak the exact edits.  Playing back the multicam sequence to check the program edits has resulted in three "lock ups" where nothing will stop the playback (video and audio), not the space bar, mouse, escape key, nothing.  The mouse still moves normally but none of the buttons in Premiere Pro "click".  Interestingly, I can open other programs and hit restart on the computer, but the timeline just keeps on playing.  All clips are converted to Cineform Neo at 1080p.  The computer is showing 56% of CPU being used and roughly 45% of RAM.
I don't what other info would apply - no other apps are open when this happens and none were open before this (clean boot with Premiere being the first and only program run).
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix or avoid this, I would be very appreciative.
    Thank you in advance,
    Videoguy 16x9

    Hi Jim,
Thank you for your reply.  I like the machine, and I did try the clips without converting but the HDV and DSLR clips alongside the XDCAM clips all in one multiclip really didn't flow so well.  I also love First Light for color grading and correction (part of Cineform Neo) - the color correction is all in the metadata, so there is no slow down or drag on the system during playback.
I have an OWC 4TB RAID connected via eSata which should be plenty fast, especially on the Sandy Bridge chipset and 16GB of RAM, but the clips just didn't feel light or zippy.  Coming from a Final Cut Pro background, I'm so used to transcoding everything to ProRes (and I used to be on Adobe and then Vegas so I was used to Cineform's workflow), that going back to Cineform seemed like a good solution.  Cineform is also the format we are using as a mastering format for program materials.
It all plays very well, the four cameras in the multiclip, the trouble is that as I'm watching the playback of the mixed multiclip, it just keeps on playing.  Nothing stops it, it's very weird.  Especially since it continues to playback perfectly and I can also open other apps and work around in them (trying to unstick Premiere).  Still the timeline continues to play, perfect video and sound without skipping a beat.  I haven't let it reach the end (long form program) so I don't know how that would affect it.  I wish I knew if it was a Premiere thing, a Cineform thing or something in the cross talk.  In any case, I seem to be the only one with this weird side effect.......

  • 5.1 Audio playback with FCPX & iMAC?

    Hi,
    FCPX, 2011 iMac, 10.7.3
I'm working on a project requiring 5.1 audio panning. I have a 2011 iMac connected to a Yamaha 5.1 receiver via an optical link however I am only sending stereo PCM to the receiver.
Do I need specialized hardware in order to monitor multichannel audio?
    If so any recomendations?
    Thanks
    Brett

I am going to pre-emp the next question by describing something that most will gladly ignore:
How to create a 5.1 surround audio file...I hope this workflow is accurate
    This should clear the room...:-)
Creating 5.1 Audio for surround sound is mostly about getting to grips with Logic Pro…not for the faint hearted.
Bringing the mixed bounced audio into FCPX is the easy bit at the end…
Another approach may be to bring 6 tracks into FCPX and do the mix there…
but I have never tried it so I will describe the Logic approach.
if anyone finds any problems here or mistakes please let us know…geoff
This workflow is for a Motu 828 audio interface,
(other multiple input and output interfaces maybe similar…) using Logic Pro.
Logic is a very complex app but I will describe here a quick intro
to mixing your audio, by doing a simple test with software instrument tracks.
The workflow is very similar for audio tracks in Logic, instead of creating the 6 software instrument tracks ,
create 6 audio tracks and drop your sounds onto them.
    You will need:
Motu 828 or similar, 5 speakers and a subwoofer and a 5.1 amplifier, Logic Pro.
Attach your speakers to 5.1 amp and connect to Motu,  connect Motu to Mac via firewire…(others maybe USB)
    turn it all on.
Openi audio midi setup In Mac from Finder >Applications > Utilities >audio midi setup > Audio devices
RMB in left column over Motu 828, in input tab select "use this device for sound input" same for output…
change Format to 48000hz,  I use analogue at the moment.
configure speakers for surround while you are there, button bottom right corner of window…
(optional) changeLogic to 64 bit in Finder >Applications:
click Logic app icon once and cmd+i - uncheck open in 32 bit.
    Start Logic
Start a new empty Logic project with 6 software instrument tracks and Output Surround.
    in Logic:
    File> project Settings > Audio  Sample Rate 48.000khz , Surround Format 5.1
check Logic prefs  > audio are output and input to Motu.
Check Logic prefs general>caps lock keys is enabled
Check Mac System prefs > Sound are also seeing Motu as out and in.
    in Logic:
Notice the Channel strips on the bottom left of the screen, the left one is the track input and the right is overall output.
To test the system do the, although you can create audio tracks and drop your files onto them if you want when you have got a working system.
Select track 1, and in input channel strip click Setting and choose an instrument setting e.g. World>Caribbean>drums
(The right hand channel strip is output and we don't need to add any Setting to that just yet)
enable record in selected track 1 - ctrl+R or click little 'R' button in track
put caps lock on, on Mac keyboard (MKB)
notice floating window representing a MKB
type on your Mac keyboard ASDGFGHJDGHJ  hear the music?
turn off the caps lock keyboard by turning off caps lock key on MKB
This is a cheap and easy way to make any amount of sounds without buying a midi keyboard,
and works with thousands of preinstalled instruments.
    Record some music:
Go to the start of the timeline, start recording by either hitting R (if caps lock off) on MKB or
pressing the eighth button in the row to the left of the centre bottom panel, (the last button in the transport controls section)
Play some sounds on your MKB (with aps lock on)
Hit the space bar to stop recording.
Select each track and add a new instrument by holding down the Settings button and choosing from the many options.
    Record something on each track/instrument.
In the track input channel strip double click the surround icon - a circle with a dot. This makes a bigger surround control for the track.
The placement of the sound can be controlled from here as can the amount of LFE (subWoof) for each track.
If you have your speakers setup correctly you will be able to move the sound all around the room and to the centre.
Leave the LFE in the middle for most  instruments usually…the Bass maybe more…:-)
Double click each surround icon in each track…they are all independent.
    save…not auto save here
    Bounce:
Click the bounce icon top right Logic window
Save as destination and name 5.1mySong.
check PCM  uncheck all others, select PCM Destination line to see options to the right
Below left check start and end times, offline, normalise = overload protection only
To right File format etc.: AIFF, 24bit ,48khz ,interleaved ,dithering none, surround bounce,
click Bounce button at bottom of this window.
Find the file and drag it into iTunes
In FCPXproject with properties surround sound- audio pan mode none:
    find the file…
    drag it to the timeline…
play the timeline and notice the 6 tracks in audio meters
    export as H.264…or your favourite.
play the movie check audio coming out of all speakers
    Done…take a break

  • Screen tearing on video playback with mplayer and radeon driver

I use a old Radeon 9200 video card with the open source radeon driver, and after I configured the radeon driver to fix the screen tearing, it still has screen tearing
    this is the xorg.conf:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "My Graphics Card"
    Driver "radeon"
    Option "DRI" "on"
    Option "DynamicPM" "on"
    Option "ClockGating" "on"
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
    Option "EXAVSync" "on"
    Option "DMAForXv" "on"
    Option "ScalerWidth" "2048"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    Option "AccelDFS" "on"
    Option "AGPMode" "4"
    Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    Option "AGPFastWrite" "yes"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection
    and this is the ~/.mplayer/conf:
    vo=xv
    ao=alsa
    mixer-channel=Master
    nolirc=yes
    nojoystick=yes
    font=Arial
    subcp=latin2
    subpos=95
and I know that this video card is capable of playback without screen tearing, because if I boot windows xp and open any video file with VLC, there is no screen tearing

I have a Radeon 9250. Here is my setup:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Radeon 9250"
    Driver "radeon"
    Option "EXAVSync" "false"
    Option "ColorTiling" "true"
    Option "EXAPixmaps" "true"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "SwapBuffersWait" "true"
    Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
    Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
    Option "AGPMode" "8"
    Option "AGPFastWrite" "false"
    Option "BusType" "AGP"
    Option "DisplayPriority" "AUTO"
    Option "IgnoreEDID" "false"
    Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
    Option "AccelDFS" "true"
    Option "FBTexPercent" "0"
    Option "DMSForXv" "true"
    Option "SubPixelOrder" "NONE"
    Option "VGAAccess" "false"
    Option "DRI" "true"
    Option "XV_VSYNC" "true"
    Option "XV_CRTC" "auto"
    Option "XV_BICUBIC" "false"
    EndSection
I'm glad with the video quality, however, I do experience little tearing sometimes, especially in the scenes involving panning.
The XV_VSYNC option is supposed to eliminate tearing (due to the radeon manual), but it is ignored if KMS is enabled. Try disabling KMS if you don't mind some performance reduction. The Radeon driver generally has some annoying bugs and glitches in KMS mode.
