Distorted Audio when exporting from iMovie 11

In iMovie 11 the edited movie sounds fine. But when the movie is exported to the media browser or Vimeo, the audio is distorted. It sounds like gain has been set way too high. I have used this version iMovie a lot and have never encountered this problem. Ideas?

This is speculation on my part so take it with a grain of salt.
But first you have to realize that iMovie renders the entire movie, effects, music, transitions, photos, etc. in one pass. If you use Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro, you can render a sequence, or render a nest of sequences. You can create a much longer movie this way without taxing your machine.
Secondly, the Intel architecture has a graphics processor that offloads a lot of the heavy lifting to a video chip or video card. On a PowerPC (RISC) architecture, everything goes through the CPU.

I am trying to export my HD movie from imovie in HD size format 1280x720, when I do I am not getting any audio. Is there something that I am missing, a mute check box or special setting? I have looked everywhere but just cant figure it out.

  • IDVD Stops Responding when Exporting from iMovie

I'm using iDVD and iMovie (from iLife 06 and fully up to date) on a MacPro (also up to date on all software, MacOSX, Quicktime etc).
This proceedure has worked before several times but now results in a non-responding iDVD every time I try it, including an archive and re-install and a complete new install of OSX and all software on a new partition.
    What I'm doing.....
[1] Recording a TV programme on EyeTV (410) and exporting it to iMovie - sucessful every time
[2] Edit the iMove project and add chapter markers and save project - no problem.
[3] Export to iDVD - iDVD shows exporting in progress and whilst this is still showing iDVD launches
[4] iDVD starts playing the music from a std theme for a few seconds and then stops. Then resumes the music after resizing the window and then after a couple of more seconds freezes. From the Dock I can see that iMove and iDVD are "not responding"
[5] Eventually iMovie completes it's "export" and then starts responding normally. iDVD continues to show as non responding although I can move the window around the screen. I have to force quit iDVD to get it to close down.
    I have tried:
    Re-exporting the project from EyeTV
Deleting the preferences files for iMove and iDVD
Deleting the iLife suite and re-installing
Doing an OSX archive and re-install
Installing a fresh OSX (10.4.8) on a different drive and installing fresh software
Running Disk Utility - clean bill of health on both drives
    Repaired permissions
The Console reports the following errors when exporting from iMove to iDVD:

Result - problem persists. I'm at a loss as what to do next. Any suggestions greatfully received.

Yes, tried that when I deleted the preferences. Disk Utility did not report any permissions needed repairing.
What really mystifies me is that this export to iDVD did work once and I expected it to resume once I'd created a fresh OSX install along with all the iLife apps on a new partition, but it remained the same!
Perhaps there is some sort of other software conflict going on? I have Adobe CS2, MS Office, Toast and FMP installed all are latest editions. On the utilities front I have installed Stuffit Deluxe, Internet Cleanup, Contour USB controller for video editing and a LogicTech wireless trackball. Again all the drivers are the latest releases.
Does anyone know if there are any preferences associated with the other not responding applications listed in my other post that I could try the delete-reboot trick on?

when exporting from Imovie I get the following error? OSStatus error -2009

    Hi
    Apple Support pages says.
    Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on)
If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software.

  • Changing frame rate when exporting from iMovie '09 using quicktime has no impact on duration.  Why?

Changing frame rate when exporting from iMovie '09 using quicktime has no impact on duration.  Why?
I have a file created by digitizing an 8mm film at a rate of 24 fps. I would like to create a downloaded movie at a frame rate of 15 fps.  The Export using Quicktime option seems to provide that capability but the resulting file has the same duration as the original 24 fps file.  How can I get the exported movie to be slowed down?

    joegez,
There is a feature you can use to slow down the video. In the project, move the mouse pointer over the clip, then click the gear icon. That brings up the Inspector. Click the Clip tab. Then you will see a feature there called Speed. Move the slider to the left to slow down the clip. Or you can enter a percentage in the box on the right.
Hope this solves the problem for you.

  • No audio when exporting from mpeg to flv

We have two PCs with Premiere Pro and AME installed, and just upgraded to CC. On one computer exporting works fine, on the other one, I'm losing the audio when exporting from mpeg to flv. I have used the same preset as on the other computer (that works) and also tried other presets that came with AME.
I can't figure out why this wouldn't work on one but works fine on the other? Anyone who knows?

How are you determining that the FLV has no audio?  Are you playing it back in VLC Player or importing it into Flash?
Also, do you see a full range of formats on the system where you don't hear audio?  If some formats are missing this might be  a licensing issue.  Also check if AME recognizes audio on the MPEG source (hover over it  in the queue and look for  audio info in the tool tip).

  • No sound when exporting from imovie 3,03

After having read most of the posts related to sound troubles, I still can't figure out why I can't get any sound when I export from imovie 3,03.
I almost know the entire dan slagle site, and checked every button to play with, I've tried many export or preferences settings (including various depths or rates) but got no result at all.
Surprisingly, when I grab the .mov file to some converters (ffmpegx), the expected audio part looks to be there, but remains silent (for me, meaning all of the bits at 0).

    Welcome to the forums, Alison.
I'm not a GarageBand user, but couldn't you export the GB audio tracks as a Quicktime file, and then import that audio track into iMovie? If it's combined in iMovie, then it should import into iDVD without a conceptual hitch.

  • Distorted audio when exporting to aiff

    Hi there,
    sure someone can help...
Im using FCP just to mix audio for an iDVD project.
This way: I have e.g. 10 minutes on a slideshow pass and want to mix, say, 2 songs that cover those 10 min. Everything seems to be fine while working. The problem is that when I export the audio, the resulting "mixed song" hears cranky and full of little "bumps", like if it was kinda distorted...
The source songs are full quality mp3 converted directly from the original CD (not downloaded from anywhere or P2P),
    any ideas?
    Thanks!

  • No audio when exporting to iMovie

I've been trying to take movies I made with our Sony digital camera, exporting them through quicktime to iMovie, but in changing the movie to MPEG4 it loses its audio and in fact, when I go to convert the from MPEG1 to MPEG4, the info window tells me "no audio track in source movie." (even though there is sound when played in quicktime).
I have looked through everything I can find, but I can't seem to find an answer. Are movies taken with a digital camera not sophisticated enough to be used in iMovie complete with the really great audio we were able to capture?
At this point, I'm thinking I need to give up on iMovie and just combine movies in quicktime pro. Can anyone please advise me before I go crazier than I already am?
    Thanks..........

Multiplexed compression formats like MPEG-1 are not conversion compatible with the QT structure. Use an MPEG-based, third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) instead.

  • Video but no audio when exporting from iPhoto

I have very small (30 sec) clips of video from a digital camera downloaded into iPhoto. When I export or share a clip to QuickTimePro 7, iMovie, my desktop, or e-mail the video goes, but no audio. I have tried so many different ways, I can't even remember what I've done. Can anyone help? I'm at my wits end, and it's a video of my baby laughing for the first time and I want to send it to everyone!!!

With the video open in the QuickTime Player, choose Show Movie Properties from the Window menu, click on the Resources tab, control-click on the entry which contains the file's location on your computer, and choose Show in Finder from the menu which appears. Once the file has been located, download MPEG Streamclip and use it to convert the file; save the converted file on the desktop.

  • TA22866 Error -40 when exporting from imovie?

I am trying to get an old movie I created off an old imac from 2000.
When I export it to quicktime in "Medium quality", it works ok.
When I export it to quicktime in "Hiigh quality", it exports and creates the file but when I try to open it in quicktime or drag it to a USB thumb drive, it cannot do either one and says an error -40 has occurred.  Can anyone help?  I really want to get this movie off the old imac and not in medium quality.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion. I had stopped trying to use iMovie '09 at all for several days, then went back to it to try creating a movie from a different original source material, one that I had successfully exported movies from in the past (a Kodak Zi6). To my surprise, I got the same error as the one I got from my quicktime generated mp4's.
When this occurs, it seems to almost complete the encoding process. I can see a file on disk, that grows to about the size that the final export movie should be. I even created a hardlink to that file so that when iMovie '09 errors out, I still have a copy of the exported movie. However, there is something about the metadata on the file that inhibits my ability to even open it with Quicktime.
When I attempt to use "open movie.mp4" at the command-line, it immediately errors out with:
Some files were not found for the file /Volumes/gks/Pictures/HCRO/timelapse/eno-titles-backup.mp4.
I'm unfamiliar with fixing up these sorts of metadata forks on macosx, but suspect this is fixable after the fact.
Also, it turns out that your suggestion to lower the bit rate to 2500-5000 was helpful! I've been able to export movies using the lower bit rate. This is rather unfortunate though as the lower quality is notable... sigh.
So, it appears that this is an issue with iMovie '09 interacting with the quicktime codec for H.264.
