Distorted Display - mini display port to Dell ST2420L dvi connection

I am having problem with connecting my new Macbook Air to external display.
I have tried restarting both the Macbook and Dell monitors and installing latest Lion OS updates.
The connection is from mini display to dvi adapter from Apple and a dvi to dvi cable connecting to the rear of the monitor
The monitor works fine with both VGA and HDMI inputs and DVI input from PC
Here is a picture of the distorted display http://t.co/yVdmCfl
Please help
Thanks
Aditya

Hi, Matt, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Matrox Support only told me that the new MacBook Pro with Mini Display Port is not supported, but as it's working for 2x1680x1050 with the Dual-Link DVI adapter, I was wondering if the Mini Display Port to Dual-Link DVI Adapter could be the problem.
I suspect that what Matrox Support meant when they said "not supported" was, in fact, "not supported": i.e., they've tried it and it doesn't work satisfactorily. You've tried it too, and found that to be true. Now you just need to come to terms with the fact. Matrox is quite open about it; it's not a secret. See the 9400M/9600MGT MacBook Pro entry in this compatibility table from Matrox's web site:

  • Mini DisplayPort stopped working only for DVI connection

I have been using my iMac with an external 22" Samsung display, using a MiniDP>DVI adapter. Yesterday I disconnected this configuration in order to connect the iMac to a 46" TV to watch a film, using a MiniDP>HDMI cable. Worked OK. When I reconnected the iMac to the 22" display using the same MiniDP>DVI adapter, the iMac wouldn't do the work anymore, as if I hadn't connected the MiniDP>DVI adapter at all.
I have already tried the following steps:
    1. Tested reconnecting the 46" TV and even the 22" external display using MiniDP>HDMI cable: it works (so it seems that the MiniDP port on the iMac is functional);
    2. Tested using the MiniDP>DVI adapter in a different iMac with the same 22" display, worked ok (so the problem is neither in the MiniDP>DVI adapter or the 22" display);
The only thing I can think of is that the MiniDP port broke in a way that it can only let HDMI signal out, but not DVI signal. Weird, isn't it? Anybody has any clue on a way to fix it without sending the iMac to tech support? Could it be a software/OS problem?
    Thanks in advance.
PS.: you may be asking yourself why won't I connect the iMac to the 22" display using the MiniDP>HDMI cable, since it works; the problem is, with HDMI the image looks crappy, the colors are washed out, fonts are hard to read. I have searched for this problem on the web and the Apple Support Communities, it seems to be a common complaint and without solution. So, in order to have a perfect image on my external display again, I must make it work through the DVI port.

  • 30'' Cinema Display with mini-display-port to dual link DVI adapter usb hub

Hi all, I don't know if any one of you experience this issue and can help me.
I am using an unibody macbook pro (late2008 model) to connect to a 30'' cinema display via the famous $100 mini diaplay port to dual link DVI adapter. I have connected the usb cable from the ACD to the adapter and the usb cable of the adapter to my macbook pro. This setting works fine under OSX 10.5.7.
When I am using Windows Vista under bootcamp the USB hub on the back of the ACD doesn't work. The device manager of Vista shows an excalmatory mark besides the device "Generic usb hub"; and it reports a problem of "the device cannot be started".
I doubted this problem is due to Windows cannot recognise the $100 adapter as a "generic usb hub"; and apple has not release a driver for this $100 adapter for windows.
Since my MBP only has 2 usb ports and the $100 adapter already occupied one, it would be very much helpful if the usb hub of the ACD can work just like in OSX. Can anyone think of any suggestion?
Much appreciated for reading this post and thank you.

i don't have an answer for you, but i feel your pain. very frustrating when this happens with Apple products and Vista/Bootcamp. wish they were more compatible, for it would make things so much easier for the consumer.

    The symptoms are:

    2. Enlightenment thinks the screen is connected and it appears in the screen setup as on.
    3. The monitor no longer recognizes that there is a laptop plugged in and just stays off...

So I downgraded those packages and the kernel with no luck.
I tried to get the HDMI working via Synergy... and failed
I then tested the Display Port on Windows and it did not work there either - exhibiting the same symptoms as Linux - the OS sees the monitor but no data was transferred.
So I ended up using one of my Display Link monitors at work... the USB monitors were ok, just an irritation with a flickering mouse.
I hope it is the miniDP>HDMI adapter and not the port... very frustrated by this problem.
I hope to test another adapter soon.
I think as nobody else is experiencing this issue that it may well be hardware/firmware related.
Hope there is a happy end to this post but not feeling so positive right now.

  • Daisy chain two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) to new Mac mini Thunderbolt?

Everything I read said that I could hook up a display port monitor to a Thunderbolt port on the mac mini.  I purchased two display port monitors (Dell U2913WM) that can be daisy chained, and hooked them up.  All I get is mirroring.  Does anyone know how to turn off mirroring with this setup?  I did not get the "uncheck mirroring" option in preferences until I hooked up the second via the HDMI port instead of a daisy chain.  The problem with that is, I cannot take advantage of the full resolution through the HDMI.  It seems I have wasted my money on two monitors.
    Looking for advice on:
    1) How to daisy chain these two Dell monitors to the mac mini and turn off mirroring and use an extended desktop, or
    2) How to take advantage of the full resolution through HDMI port?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

So re-reading this thread, I now realize you did exactly what I wanted to do but your issue was having a cloned vs. extended desktop. Oops!
I believe your "nothing plugged in" issue is the cable. I'm not sure that TB cables are backwards compatible with DP - I think it's only the ports. Do you see multiple monitors in "System Preferences > Displays" if you hook the monitors up like you described in your OP?
My Dell U2713H arrived today and it works like a charm with the supplied Mini-DP to DP cable. The built-in display on my 13" mid 2009 MBP still works if not in clamshell mode, although I will mostly use mine in my HengeDock. In the OSD of the monitor, you can access "Display Settings > Display Info" and it will show you the DP capability. Mine is only DP 1.1a and I believe to run 2 of these at full resolution you will need the bandwidth in DP 1.2 which includes MST (daisy-chaining). This could be your problem.
Can you access the same menu in your OSD and report back what your DP compatability is?
    Thanks!

  • Drive Dell 3008 WFP From ThunderBolt/Mini-Display Port to Display Port

I am trying to find the reason why my new MBP Retina Display can not drive my 30 inch Dell 3008 WFP Monitor.  When I connect them the MBP flickers as if it is detecting the display, but I never get a picture.  Does any one know if this is possible, and if not the reasons why ?  Should I have chosen a Mini-displayport to DVI or VGA connection instead?  Thanks.

Sorry I did not make that clear.  Instead of the Thunderbolt/Mini-DisplayPort to Displayport. which is the connection I am trying now with the results described...basically nothing.  Monitor knows there is a connection it just says no signal from computer.  MPB does not even show the monitor in display prefences.  I tried holding option and pressing "Detect Displays" and nothing shows up.

  • Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI Does Not Work Right

Somebody said here that this was an isolated problem. Well, I just got my new MacBook Pro 15", used the adapter to hook to the 30" Dell monitor, and it works a few minutes, then the screen distorts.
Count me among the isolated problems- it is beginning not to look isolated.
Now, do I wait on Apple to fix the problem, or do I return the MacBook Pro while still in the return period?

  • Mini display port to VGA not showing correctly on TV

I have a new 2012 (June) MacBookPro running 10.7.4 with a 2.5 GHz Intel i5 processor. Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB.
I'm trying to connect a Toshiba flat screen TV to the computer via a mini display port to VGA adapter purchased from Apple with the computer. Sometimes I see 5 lines running down the screen. I can get the screen to show on the TV by changing resolutions and refresh rates (1280 x 768 at 60Hz) but the TV shows 5 partial screens on my laptop screen (between those different vertical lines). I feel like I'm looking at the beginnings of an abstract art piece.
All software is up to date.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    1) Restart the computer in Safe Mode with display attached (shut down and restart while holding down shift key).

  • Can i use a hdmi to mini display port cable to use my iMac as external monitor for a windows laptop?

Does anyone know if a hdmi to mini display port cable can be used to link a  windows laptop with an 27 inch iMac to use the iMac as an external monitor. Or are there other options to connect my DELL latitude 6430?

Is the 3.5mm-to-optical cable any better than using a standard 3.5mm?  I don't know too much about this stuff.  My thought process was that if the source of the connection is a 3.5mm jack, does it make a difference using a cable that starts as a 3.5 and converts to optical?
Chances are excellent that if your receiver is less than 20 years old it has an optical input, this is a digital signal which will sound MUCH MUCH better than using an analog 3.5MM to 3.5MM connection. I recommend using the cable suggested or one with the same connections but of a different length if your needs warrant it.

  • Why my new Mac mini  DVI dual link mini display port adapter doesn't work  with my 30"display (LG W3000H)?

    Hello There
Can any of you advise on the below? Tried to connect Mac mini with a 30" display through a DVI dual link mini display port adapter. For the first try Mac mini go connected to the display, then i've chosen the highest resolution (2560x1600, native) and right at that moment they got disconected. Since then the display stays black. What can be the issue, is it possible DVI dual link mini display port adapter is not compatible with 30"display (LG W3000H)? It works with DVI male-male cable plus DVI HDMI adapter as long as the resolution stays under 1280x800. Any idea is much appreciated.
    Thank you, Vera

    Hi,
I can report that my Mac Mini Intel Duo connected instantly and without even having to set it up (on the first try) with my 1366x768 native resolution DELL 50" Plasma Display. It's so beautiful that I just want to stand there and fondle my HDTV as I drool haplessly like Homer Simpson with a doughnut in his mouth. Seriously, no problems.... guess I bought the right cable (ebay).
Before you buy a Duo, make sure you're aware of the airport and bluetooth issues that so many (maybe everyone who tries to use them together) are having. It seems that bluetooth interferes with airport, or maybe the other way around. Anyway, it's messed up. Also, Airport reception is generally VERY poor with the new Intel Mac Mini.
Despite these things, I still love mine (I now have 2 base stations and an airport express for my powerhouse wireless needs, and an external DLink bluetooth-2-USB dongle solved the bluetooth/airport issues... in my case).

  • Mini display port to vga not detected

    Hi,
Can't put the mini displayport to VGA adapter working in my macbook pro 13" running snow leopard.
To debug I try a mini displayport to DVI and it works fine, so I think that it is not an hardware problem, unless VGA adapter uses extra pins from the mini display port. I think that VGA is active and DVI is a passive adapter.
When I connect the VGA adapter to the mac without the monitor the mac LCD flashes blue one time. If I connect the monitor cable it flashes blue 3 or 4 times.
The external monitor always says no signal.
The mac does not seems to detect the adapter, even running the firmware update it can not find the adapter. I try it with and without charger pluged.
The adapter is original from apple and works in other computer.
Can anyone give some help here?
    Thanks.

  • Mini Display Port to DisplayPort Adaptor

    Hello all,
I have recently bought a Dell U2711 to use the 2560x1440 maximum resolution with my Mac Book Pro 17", purchased in July 2009. I was wondering if I should buy a mini DisplayPort to Display Port adaptor, or a mini Display Port to HDMI adaptor to achieve the maximum resolution... Any suggestions...? Any cheap adaptors and / or cables in London?
    Many thanks!

This would be a good solution for you <http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Mini-Displayport-to-Displayport-Ada pter-Cable.html> and they only charge 14 USD for shipping to the UK. It says their shipping only takes 2-3 days as well.
It's best to keep your signal in the displayport form, if you convert to HDMI you will lose maximum resolution.

There is at least one that I know of.
