Distorted display problem

When I open a raw NEF file in elements 9, I get this message. “Camera raw requires a minimum display resolution of 1024x768. Your display is set to a lower resolution. Continue anyway?” My display is always set at 1280x720 and I’ve tried every other combination including 1024x768.   I've tried everything with the display settings and the latest drivers are installed. The raw file opens in Windows Photo Gallery fine, it just needs fine tuning. I downloaded Lightroom and the same noisy image appears when opened in that program. I can’t read the writing on signs in the photograph. Why would everything but Photoshop display correctly on my monitor?   I just uploaded a raw file to elements and it was the same crappy rendering. Then I clicked on view actual pixels and voila, it was clear and I could read every word on the signs. I then re-sized it to 1000 pixels and clicked fit to screen. It was crappy again so I clicked view actual pixels and it was still degraded from the original. How are you supposed to work with these files when you can't see a true representation of your photo?

When i boot up the Mac the display is fine and the
login area is fine in terms of display. But soon as
it loads my desktop the distorted colours of
everything happends.
What happens if you create another user and log-in with this user? Does the display get distorted or not?
If not, then there must be something wrong with the settings of the user that get distortions, so there s 2 solutions, either you keep the new user and use it as your main user from now (ou can then remove the old one onceou get all set up with the new user), or you try to track the wrong thing with the old user...
