Distorted MP3 playback

Here is a problem that has been vexing me for several days:
The latest batch of MP3s that I have ripped from my CD collection - they sound fine when played back on the desktop in winamp or itunes. But when I copy them to the ipod they sound distorted and warbling (under water or flanging sound) on the ipod. I'm using the same Sennheiser headphone set, switching between the ipod and computer.
Detailed information: These are MP3s ripped at 320kps. The warbling/distortion is not subtle (my girlfriend who is no audiophile can clearly notice). The strange thing about this is the mp3 tracks I ripped (same software and settings) copied to the ipod several weeks ago sound great. The existing library on the ipod sounds normal.
As a test - I re-ripped one of the offending tracks (acoustic piano and cello - Beethoven) in Exact Audio Copy (the program originally used), then in iTunes @ 320kps MP3, then iTunes @ 320kps AAC. All 3 of these tracks sound fine on the computer, but when copied to the ipod - the AAC sounds fine, but the 2 MP3s sound bad. Then I ripped the same track in EAC @128kps and in iTunes @160kps. These sound OK (the 128kps file, it is hard to tell if there is warble or the standard compression). One of the 320kps tracks I ripped before the problem started, I recopied to the ipod - that sounds OK also. So has something changed on my desktop that would affect both iTunes and EAC ripping - I assume they used different encoders/dlls? Is there some audiophile hating DRM?
I've reset the ipod a few times and it has the most current software. Besides a restore - any suggestions? THANKS!

No its not your iPod's problem I think - because on my little flash mp3 does the same when I load the songs I encoded from iTunes onto it.
I don't know if there's an answer to this on Apple website, but it may have something to do with bit rate and cetain frequencies. I recently mass-encoded some of my favorite tunes using 96kbps on iTunes, and loaded them onto my flash mp3 player. It warbled. But the same song, when in 320kbps, did not warble.
I also think the distortion builds up with time. For example, if you keep re-encoding the same song over and over with different bitrates, then the warble sound may start to be emphasized.
Just some guesses on the problem; I'm not exactly a technitian either so I dont know whats causing this...

  • Player 10 - Slow and Distorted MP3 Playback.

I began experiencing this problem once I download Flash
Player 10. The mp3 playback is slow and sounds very distorted.
This only seems to occur with mp3s at a 48k sample rate. Mp3s
at a sample rate of 44.1k sound normal. Is there a way to fix this
without converting the sample rate? Is Adobe working on a solution?
    Thank you.

I'm getting the same thing. Are all of you on Apple platform? It seems to be the only place this is showing up.

  • Ipod classic and some distorted/clipped playback

After spending many years with my 3G ipod I got a new 80GB ipod classic (thanks to my wife) but am having a problem with playback on 1.1/1.1.1. It seems that some songs are playing back exceptionally loud causing the output to be clipped/distorted.
Playback is through the digital connector and not the headphone output. This is through a iTrip auto scan modulator.
On the 1.0 firmware I found a work around. By going into the Volume Level while not connected and then connect I could "trick" the output on the digital out to adjust. Now this work around seems to be disabled and I cannot figure out how to fix it.
I checked some of the individual sounds in iTunes to make sure they were not bumped up in volume level and they are not.
    Any thoughts?

I had the same problems, and I found that using the AACgain program with iGain at the front end solved the problem. However, this does not work on songs bought from iTunes as they are protected. Spoken to iTunes about it, but they were no help. Can't understand why they don't run a gain adjuster on songs before they offer them for download. Won't be buying from iTunes anymore.

  • Some distortion in playback

Two albums I recently purchased from the iTunes store exhibit some distortion in playback, which I hadn't heard in iTunes in a while. I seem to recall that this used to be a problem when I would import solo piano music (one of the albums indeed piano heavy), but they supposedly improved on this with new sound encoding techniques. Basically, I don't feel I am getting a crisp sound and that there is decay at some of the louder dynamic moments.
My playback equipment is of a pretty high quality (Bose headphones and Altec Lansing speakers), so I don't think this is the problem.
Anyone else have experience with this?
The albums were Duke Ellington's "Money Jungle" and "Have you Heard Jim Croce Live," by the way.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

    Hi,
Same problem here. Downloaded goo goo dolls let love in.. sounds like it is over-driving, especially the bass drum is causing the sound to break up. Even when I set it on NO equalizer.
I emailed the iTunes store about it, maybe you should too and we'll get some kind of response. I just want to re-download or get a refund and I'll go buy the CD and import it.

  • E55 - improve sound on mp3 playback?

mp3 playback on my E55 is dissappointing; you need to add Bass enhancement just to get a flat frequency response and the music lacks detail even on simplet tracks.
I know it's not a dedicated mp3 player/'comes with music'/Walkman phone but how can I improve music playback?
    - Is eACC format easier on the processor?
    - Is there a 3rd party mp3/ACC player for E55 that sounds better?

    I should have explained;
    - Yes, I'm using same pair of headphones to compare same tracks played back on E55 and laptop. Laptop is satisfactory and I'm used to what it 'sounds' like, E55 mp3 player is poor.
    - Source is mp3 so ACC/eACC would require an additional conversion (rather than ripping CDs to ACC in the first place).
Seperate headphone amp is nice idea, but my sound quality expectations aren't quite that high for a phone. Would only bother with headphone amp for CD line output or similar cheers.
    Further testing;
    - Internet Radio on E55 is quite acceptable and dosn't need any bass re-infocement. I conclude the problem is with the mp3 playing software on E55 or the source mp3 - not the S60 OS or E55 hardware.
    - Playing further albums on proved that BOTH the laptop and E55 did justice other mp3 and WMAs including Opera, Rock and Dance.
Conclusion: "The Haçienda - Acid House Classics" mp3 album is a bit quite and not a great source. But the E55 still needs bass turned on for the music player (but not Internet Radio!) so could be solved with a software update.
Other sources sound as good as you could expect on the E55: rubbish in ribbish out.
Now to see if converting from mp3/WMA to ACC/eACC can actually improve the sound. I used to think it impossible to improve a signal with additional processing, but my Sony Hard Disk TV Recorder actually plays back better than the original(!) so maybe converting to ACC will to.

  • MP3 Playback

I'm having issues trying to get MP3 playback capability on my Arch x86 - Xfce4 install. I have all of the gstreamer plugins installed and my sound card is configured properly (I can listen to audio in swiftfox), but Banshee Audacious and Totem will not play MP3 files. Has anyone seen a situation like mine? I have not found one after taking some time to search these forums. Thanks in advanced for any help.

If that sound is initiated by ActionScript (e.g. an instance
    of the
Sound class), the Sound.stop() method will do it. If not, you
    can always
    try the stopAllSounds() function.

  • Palm Pre - MP3 Playback skips

Haven't had any troubles with mp3 playback on my Palm Pre until yesterday. Every song I listen to skips intermittently.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

I only had 2 or 3 other cards open at the time of the malfunction (gps, email, phone, and music player). Would that be enough to cause this? I understand that memory is memory, but since multitasking is the cornerstone of the device's design philosophy I think it's fair to expect 4 or so apps to all work at the same time.
That said, I usually have something closer to 8 apps open, and that has never affected my listening experience.

  • Gstreamer mp3 playback broken

When I tried to play some mp3's today via Clementine, gstreamer gave me "data flow error"(everything worked yesterday, lol) , and then, when I reinstalled all possible gstreamer plugins(except "ugly") mp3 playback didn't change at all, some mp3 files were played but with (:03, :06, :09 second speed) like it is jumping, no sound of course. Does anybody know how to fix it, and why is this happening?

  • Instantaneous MP3 playback...

MP3 playback used to begin immediately even with very large files, but no longer does. What am I missing? It seems there may be some type of "helper" file for other browsers (read Safari, Chrome & Opera) that isn't being taken advantage of to facilitate this "starting play before the download is complete" type of thing...

The playback time would vary based on any number of factors:
Temperature, volume, other operations, how long the screen is on, how many times you change the volume, eq settings, if airplane mode is on or off, any calls, e-mails, push on or push off, how often to fetch mail, screen brightness, 3g on or off, wi-fi on or off, location service on or off, etc.
The 24 hours is based on a specific situation and is not likely to be reproduced with normal use.
Just use it and see what you get.

  • MP3 playback cutouts, Firefox plug-in

I've got Firefox 3.5, with QuickTime selected as the MP3 playback plugin. When I click on an MP3 link targeted at a dedicated browser window, Quicktime comes up to play it back. Unless I keep that window in the foreground, and keep sending it events (e.g., hovering the mouse cursor over it and moving it around), the playback audio cuts out. Quicktime's progress indicator proceeds, but there's no audio unless I move the cursor over the window again.
This happens on TWO different machines (including a MacBook Pro with Windows XP under BootCamp, and a Dell Inspiron 530 with Windows Vista).
Is this a known bug? Are there any solutions other than installing an MP3 playback plugin other than Quicktime?

So, after 2 weeks without any response, how do I report this as a bug, and somehow get Apple to look into this?

  • Metalic Distortion during MP3 playback with VLC

Thanks in advance for any help that I recieve with this issue!  I'm a fairly new Arch user (I have used many other distros in the past), and I am currently up and running with GNOME Shell.  I have installed pulseaudio, and the GNOME pulseaudio plugin.  The problem I am experiencing is a metallic distortion of any .mp3 file that I play (I don't have any files with a different format) through VLC (though MPlayer worked fine, it wouldn't show a GUI and would not stop playing until a reboot was performed).  I followed both the Arch Wiki and the Arch install tutorial provided by This Week in Linux (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azySq-uBaB8), the video was for GNOME 2.32.x, but many of the steps still worked.  Is there something else that I need to install to get it working?  Again, any and all help on this problem is greatly appreciated.
Solved: If you are encountering issues with Metalic Distortion through VLC or Teamspeak 3 (or other applications like them), install the pulseaudio-alsa package through Pacman and follow the steps outlined here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … _crackling .  All the credit for this fix goes to the users below this post.  Again, thank-you!

@Rookie, I did try SDL.  It definitely appears to be slightly less distorted, however there is still a lot of distortion.  I guess I will have to wait for the next version of VLC to be released.  What I have found that works (though it is slower on GNOME Shell, since it uses a GTK 2+ application) is to install all of the Gstreamer plugins and then install Rhythmbox.  It works with minimal distortion, and seems to have solved one of two major concerns at this point.  The only other is that GNOME Shell is duplicating my menu items.   However, it seems that duplication is quite common.

  • DVD Menu distorted on playback and finished copy

The last several projects I have worked on in Premiere Elements 9 seem to have an issue with the DVD Menu being distorted on preview and playback as well as when I burn them to DVD .  I noticed it several months ago on a short 20 minute video.  The DVD Menu was distorted, fuzzy and the titles were barely legible.  The video itself was just fine.  It was a standard play DVD … nothing special.
On the next project with the above in mind, I checked the Project Settings and all looked as it should.  I started editing and noticed playback was different when viewing clips in the timeline.  While playing the clip, the video and graphics looked fuzzy until I stopped the playback.  Then the image instantly sharpened and looked as good as I expected.  I continued editing assuming I never noticed the difference in this before.  I am still not sure whether this problem is related to the DVD Menu or not.  Anyway, I created the DVD menu and AGAIN, the DVD Menu looked fine until it is previewed or played back.  I even burned a copy to disc and the DVD Menu still looks as distorted and unclear as it does in the preview window.
This is the DVD Menu and honestly it looks worse than this screen shot improves upon it.
I would appreciate if anyone can provide some guidance on what the project settings should be or maybe the playback settings.  I am using a PC with a 64-bit processor with Win 7 O/S and 4 GB of RAM.
If there are any other questions I need to answer, please ask them and I will provide a response as soon as possible.
Thanks again for any assistance provided.

So apparently the screen shots I posted in my two posts did not get added.
    Here they are;
