Distorted Screen On 2007 24 Inc iMac

I have been having a lot of problems with the screen on my 2007 iMac. It started out with little lines on the bottom left, and they eventually grew over to the right of the screen. They only appear when rendering video. I took the computer the nearest Apple store, and they told me that there's nothing wrong with the computer, and that it's the best 2007 iMac they've seen.
Today I woke up my computer and saw this screen. The only fix was to restart the machine. Lately I've been rendering hours of 1080i footage, and it appears to me that this was part of the problem.
I don't know what's going on because all diagnostics are saying everything's good. Yet performance has been terrible, and problems like this has been going on. I'm new to the forums, but look forward to adding my input to help the community.

Very simply you have a hardware problem, please take it back to the Apple Store and they can estimate how much a repair will be.

My Mid 2007 24" iMac has been a bit laggy on Yosemite and getting worse every day, so I went to the Apple Support pages on Apples website looking for help and thought I'd found some. This is what I did and it made everything 100 times worse :(

So here is what I found and what I did to try to alleviate the RAM eating upgrade named Yosemite. This guy has helped quite a few people, you can read all the comments and I gave it several tries this morning.

I post this hoping to help those users who, like me, are experiencing high CPU usage and massive memory leaking with OS X core services and apps, leading to slow performance and battery drain.
I've tried everything mentioned, but found the right combination of steps to follow. I've tried this with seven different Apple computers, including mine, and has worked well so far. I applied this method yesterday to give these process a 24 hour window to fail again, so far everything good.
First step: disconnect any external or secondary monitors, if any is present. The video memory allocation leak can also happen if you have a system with an integrated card, like Intel, with no external monitors attached.
Second step: Shut down your machine and enter Safe Mode (press shift once you turn on your computer again, more info below). Once you're there, fix your disk permissions.

Third step: From Safe Mode turn off your machine again and reset your System Management Controller (SMC). There are different methods, depending on machine, to do this. To know what method applies to yours read the following guide.

Fourth step: Once your machine completes a full boot after resetting the SMC turn it off again and reset your PRAM (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP, BUT THE PREVIOUS ONES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ONE TO WORK). The PRAM stores small bits of data that indicate our Apple computer how to interact with the devices connected to it, including monitors and video cards. It also affects software.
To reset it you should hold the OPTION, COMMAND, P and R keys in your keyboard immediately after turning on your machine again.You'll hear the start up chime, continue pressing the keys until the machine boots and the chime starts A SECOND TIME, then release. IF YOUR YOSEMITE INSTALLATION LOCKS UP AT A BLACK SCREEN AFTER THIS, DONT PANIC! It's normal, just turn off your computer and let it boot again.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac. You should be able to set a password for it. Save it. Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer, I suppose, back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity. As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,

don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there

time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine and go for it. You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups of your stuff.

No Time Machine animation - 2007 24" iMac and Snow Leopard (10.6)

I am not getting the spinning stars animation when I enter time machine restore interface on my 2007 24" iMac. This Mac has the ATI Radeon HD 2600 256 MB Graphic Card. I just a white screen. I deleted the time machine prefs and I still do not have the spinning stars interface. I used to get it in Mac OS 10.5.8. Thoughts.

It's a long shot, but might be related to your video card.
Try running the *Apple Hardware Tests.* (Instructions should be printed on the disc; if they differ from these, follow them instead)
1. Disconnect all external devices (including the Ethernet cable) except the keyboard and mouse.
2. Insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with your computer.
3. Restart while holding down the "C" key. When the list of available startup volumes appears, click Apple Hardware Test and the right arrow.
4. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen comes up (after a moment), follow the on-screen instructions.
+(note that when your Video RAM is tested, various patterns, colors, and stripes will appear on the screen).+
5. If it detects a problem, an error code will be displayed. Make a note of it.

2007 24" iMac eSATA ports

For anyone out there interested...
I have successfully installed 2 eSATA ports on my 24" 2007 Aluminum iMac.
I am very impressed with the results!
I am running Mountain Lion off an internal SSD (which I also upgraded) and can boot from external eSATA connected drives.
If anyone would like more information on how to do this, lemme know.
I found that when I was seeking this info, it was rather scarce on the web. Not anymore!
It's not that tough an upgrade... especially if you do it the way I did.
And it costs approximately $60 (usd) in parts, give-or-take shipping, etc, etc.

P.S. I passionately love Apple & their products, but I must admit, my greatest disappointment is the lact of eSATA support. I get the Thunderbolt perspective... but eSATA is just one of those standards that is waaaay too common and will be around for a very, very long time. Just support the **** thing.

It's really straight-forward, actually.
Here is a parts list:

It shipped really fast, I was impressed. It also seemed to work fine (and still is) without installing drivers. It was recognized and booted off an external drive without hitting the option key. Pretty cool.
The reason you MUST purchase this card, as opposed to any other is the proximity to the LCD screen. There is absolutely no room between the card and the LCD. Other manufacturers' cards required people to solder eSATA connections. I can't risk my iMac or external drives failing, so I needed a more refined solution.
Try as hard as I could, I couldn't find 90 degree SATA to eSATA cables anywhere. Just crazy!
So I purchased the BYTECC 90 degree Male-Female adapters from Newegg.
Pulled out the Airport Card, plugged them new parts all-together, et voila!
I decided to drill holes in the bottom perferated grill on the Aluminum housing. Not the most beautiful of solutions, but it works!

To make the situation more interesting I have another computer on my home network, an older mac mini. The home Mac Mini does show up in the finder as shared both at work and on my MacbookPro at home. It is set up in the same way as the other two. I can screen share my mac mini from work or my work iMac from the home Mac mini. I can even share the mac mini from the work imac and then share the macbookpro from the screenshared mac mini! I can also screen share my work imac from the mac mini at home.
I have checked my settings on all 3 computers and they seem to be exactly the same.
The home MacbookPro has OS 10.9.2
The home Mac Mini has OS 10.7.5
The work iMac has 10.9.2
This has been very frustrating and puzzling. Any help would be much appreciated.

My 2007 intel imac ejects discs within 2 seconds. The last time I used my disc hardware was to install software for a new Cannon all in one. It worked perfectly. I have tried many discs including one movie made on this same machine. Pleease help me troubleshoot before I have to transport my computer to the Apple store. Thank you in advance.

It could be that the laser has dust on it; a laser cleaning disk is available at stores which specialize in audio and video- BestBuy, or OfficeDepot would be a place to start. Run a cleaning session to see how that plays out. It could be the optical drive itself. The best approach is first to try steps that do not involve transporting your iMac as you indicate.

Netboot Issue - White Imac to 2007 AL Imac

We have just purchased 20 Mid 2007 Aluminium iMac's to add to our existing network. - The one i have taken out of the box was pre-installed with 10.4.11 with a Leopard Upgrade Disk inside (said that Leopard is not installed on the machine but can be upgraded by use of this disc).
We have a 10.4.10 Netboot image (built on a 17" 2006 White Intel iMac) on our XServe that I have tried to restore onto one of the new Aluminium Imac's.
The actual netboot operation worked fine and the operating system booted up on the new Aluminium Imac - but then i have found;
a) the onboard LAN port is greyed out and cant be configured
b) the isight camera does not work
c) the sound does not work
I downloaded the 10.4.11 combo updater and ran that on the machine hoping that it would replace drivers, etc - no chance.
Is there a way i can get the specific drivers for this hardware, as I dont want to have to install all of the programs and settings that we have for our network. then have to clone it 20 times.
Or is there a way i can remove the settings for the missing items (network, isight, sound) from the computer prefs and get them rebuilt on system startup?
Frustrated that Apple support has been less than forthcomming, with the reply of
"upgrade to Leopard" - Upgrading to Leopard is not an option.
Not understanding the problem which i was facing.
I might have to return the 20 and just get hold of 20 of the White Imac's - which are on sale from our reseller.

Thank you so much for your information. I have been using a Seagate GoFlex portable drive as my back up disc with TimeMachine on my iMac. The AirPort Time Capsule is arriving tomorrow with my new iMac. My question to you is this: Will it be easier to wait till tomorrow, set up my AirPort Time Capsule and back up my old iMac to it and then use it with the Startup Assistant to transfer my stuff or will it be easier just to use my GoFlex back up disc? I have had some issues in the last year where Time Machine send me a message that the (daily) back up failed because the file got corrupted and I have been unable to fix it so that I have to reformat the disc and back up everything I have. Just an FYI, I don't have a huge amount of stuff on my iMac even if is almost 7 years old....I have 900 GB out of 1TB available. This is one of the reasons I felt it's time to replace my iMac.
Right now I have a clean encrypted back up on the GoFlex but I don't want to transfer anything I shouldn't to my new iMac. Please advice and thank you.

Zen X-Fi 16GB Distorted Screen

Zen X-Fi 6GB Distorted Screen? Hello,
I purchased a 6GB Zen X-Fi about 2-3 weeks ago. Upon recieving it, I unpackaged it, loaded the software, and began transferring music. After disconnecting it from my computer, I went to turn the device on, and the screen was completely distorted (white lines and other various colors all over it). I kept messing with the buttons, tried restarting it, etc. with no luck. Sound still functions but I cannot see the menu at all.When the player is turned off, I see a black smudge underneath the glass.
So, I sent it back to the retailer (newegg) and they claim it was physically damaged and cannot give me a refund.
This is not my first Creative product, I also own a Zen Vision:M 30GB, as well as a? X-Fi XtremeMusic soundcard. I have been pleased thus far by creative, and I am curious as to if i am able to recieve a replacement, or if anyone else has experienced this.
