Distorted stills in a slideshow created in IMovie

Hello everyone. I have created a 3 minute slideshow with stills from IPhoto, transitions, and music and I have noticed when I view the project in full screen mode there is very noticeable distortion in the video. It looks like a bad tv image, wavy lines moving horizontally and only in one section of the screen. I have burned it to a CDRW disc and it is just as bad on a television.
What would be causing this, and how do i correct it? Thanks for the help.

James, viewing an iMovie project at full size is not a fair test of image quality. It forces iMovie to display the movie image larger than its natural size, which reduces the quality. It's like viewing a 1600 x 1200 iPhoto image at 6400 x 4800.
Be aware too that iMovie never shows you all the quality that's actually there, even when played at the best size.
There are many threads here that discuss image quality. Search the forum for "blurry", "jaggies" and related terms.
Watch out too for the iMovie bug that adds jaggies to the images when you press the "Create iDVD Project" button in the iDVD tab of iMovie. (Search for that.) If quality was reduced when you pressed the button, that may be the cause of the problem.

    Hi
Time needed can depend on several things.
    • less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
    • Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
    I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
    Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
    • Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
    • Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

  • How do i create a still frame from a clip in iMovie 11? thanks

Good morning. How do I create a still frame from a clip in iMovie 11.  Thanks

First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
You can then drag this photo into iPhoto.
Here is a video I made that steps through this...

How do you create a still image from a video using IMovies 11 on a Pro Mac?

The simplest way is to do a simple screen capture.

  • Is there a way to create a still image from video in either imovie or iphoto?  I want to add an arrow to an imovie and so far have not had any luck but I'm thinking I might be able to add an arrow to a photo and then incorporate it into the movie.

I'm still trying to point out a location in an imovie with an arrow.  I thought I might be able to insert an arrow in a still photo from the imovie and then reinsert the photo in the movie but my attempts at capturing a still frame from a video in imovie or iphoto haven't worked so far.  Any ideas any one???

Also, for how to add a pointer, try Karsten Schluter's website for a good post on how to do this.

  • My iMac "locks up" when I try to burn a slideshow made in iMovie to a DVD

When attempting to burn a slideshow I created in iMovie to a DVD (after exporting to iDVD), the video portion encodes without incident, but when the audio starts to encode, my computer "locks up." That is, the burn "wheel" stops turning, and I get a revolving color wheel at the pointer. I then can't exit iDVD, access any other application, or even shut down the computer. In fact, the only way I can shut the computer down is to turn off the power (i.e., disconnect the power cord). What makes this all the more frustrating is that I had no trouble of this kind the first time I tried burning a DVD from iMovie (a couple of months ago). It worked fine then.

Thanx. I guess that's a possibility. I waited for about an hour, however. I'll give it another try and see what happens.
It's likely not stalled but rather still encoding.

  • IPhoto slideshow imported into iMovie  - photos no longer fit in frame

I imported an iPhoto slideshow into iMovie. The event that is created matches the iPhoto slideshow. However, when I drop the iPhoto slideshow into into the new project, I am losing the tops and bottoms of my photos. For most of the photos this is okay, but for some it end up chopping off heads! I have gone back to iPhoto and adjusted photos to add dead space at top/bottom of photos, but this is not possible in all cases.
I exported from iPhoto using Export/Display mode per the instructor in the One to One class.
This project is a workaround to my original problem of distortion issues when I created the slideshow directly in iMovie.
Have a hard deadline to meet, any help would be appreciated!

When creating a slideshow in iPhoto (for sharing), you can select an appropriate aspect ratio to suit your target, i.e., where you intend to use the slideshow.
After clicking the + button in the bottom left corner of iPhoto and selecting Slideshow, click on the Settings tab. At the base of the Slideshow Settings window you can select the aspect ratio. Mine shows the following choices:
    This screen (16:10)
    HDTV (16:9)
    TV (4:3)
    iPhone (3:2)
When creating a slideshow that I intend to import to iMovie '09 I always select the HDTV setting (16:9). This works well, providing you initially position individual slides appropriately in your iPhoto slideshow, e.g, to prevent heads being chopped off!

  • I have a 27 inch iMac with maverick os.  my current version of iMovie (10.0.6) will not open older projects i created in iMovie 9.0.9.  I can find the projects and they have a ".rcproject" file extension

I have a 27 inch iMac with maverick os.  my current version of iMovie (10.0.6) will not open older projects i created in iMovie 9.0.9.  I can find the projects and they have a ".rcproject" file extension

Thank you GeeD. I'm still stymied.
I have moved the Event and Project Folders to the "top-layer of the drive" as the instructions state, right alongside the System Folder, Users Folder and Applications Folders.
When I open iMovie 10.0.8, the Events and Projects Folders are empty:
When I select File/Update Projects and Events, I get an alert box that says iMovie couldn't find any:
Not knowing exactly what is meant by the "top layer" in the instructions, I moved the Events and Project folders back inside the "Movies" folder where I found them (but then not where I would call the "top" layer, but rather "iMac/Users/Home/Movies/iMovieProjects". Then I tried to "Update Projects and Events" and received the same alert: "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update."
    Then I tried to update iMovie 9.0 (iMovie '11 version 9.0 (1073)) to version 9.0.9 .
[As an aside, the nomenclature of iMovie drives me nuts. The latest version is 10.0.8, which us newer than iMovie '11.]
Back to the update of version 9.0 to 9.0.9.
Presumably because I have version 10.0.8 installed, I got this alert box:
So, I cannot update version 9.0
and I cannot "Update" the Events and Projects created in version 9.0.

  • No sound in imovie 11 for a project created in imovie 09

    Hello Everyone,
I have a similar, yet different audio issue than what others have posted about in the forums. I have a friend who created a wedding video in iMovie 09 for us, we created the iDVD project, exported, burned, and shipped it to the client. The client wanted a few misc changes, and we've since upgraded our MBP's to iLife 2011, and when we open the same project with the same events in the same folder structure, the audio from the songs in the project have no volume.
The system volume is on and turned up, we tried removing and re-adding the songs to the file, that doesn't help. I can bring up and play correctly the audio file in the audio preview window without issues, and I can play the files in iTunes, but the files won't play in the iMovie 2011 project. We've rebooted, we've checked that the files aren't drm protected, we checked volume levels, ducking all the usual things. Another interesting thing, is that when just hovering in the project window, and hitting the space bar to play the project, that does not play the audio, but I can skim in the project window and hear the audio of the files.
It seems like some sort of glitch in iMovie, anyone have any thoughts?
    Chris

Unfortunately, the 9.0.2 update does NOT fix this problem. At least for me. In my case, I created a 25-minute promo video for a local tech conference, with multiple background audio clips (the ones that come with GarageBand - "Havana," "Jacaranda," et al). This project was created in iMovie '09 and works perfectly, I exported it and gave it to them to upload to their Vimeo account. This was several months ago. This week they finally got around to creating a YouTube account (who knows why they have never thought to do this before now, but that is beside the point). Of course youtube has a 15 minute upload limit, so they asked me to re-edit a shorter version of the video I made for them last year. Between then and now I had upgraded to iMovie '11 (and yes, I am running 9.0.2). I made a copy of the project and opened it, and now only the first two background audio clips play - after that there is no more background audio (but the audio from the original movie files still plays). Really frustrating, and it means I have to spend a night reverting my machine back to iMovie '09 so I can get this project shipped off to them. Argh!

  • Email a slideshow created on IPhoto

How can I email a slideshow created on IPhoto to a contact who may have a PC?

Export the slideshow - that makes a movie of it, but I wouldn't email it. Simply, sharing video via email is not advisable.
Many email services have an attachment limit of 20mb and some a limit of 10mb. As emails are sent through an array of relays, the effective limit is the smallest file size allowed on any of the relays.  That means that video is rarely suitable for emailing.
Then there's the whole issue of Codecs and not all machines will have the codecs to play all videos. Plus, folks with slower connections can find it very inconvenient to download large video files.
Finally, sharing video from iPhoto via email is not supported. All that gets you is the Movie thumbnail. If you feel you must share via email then you'll need to export the video first, and attach that. Use the File -> Export command and set the kind  to Original.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Other than that your options include:
Upload it to a sharing site like YouTube or Vimeo and email a link - these will allow the recipient to view the material online. That will avoid the codec issues mentions, and the person can still download the video file if they wish.
Upload it to sharing services like Dropbox or YouSendIt and email a link. This will require that they download the material to their machines to view.
    Regards
    TD

  • Video Slideshow Creation in iMovie (Ken Burns Effect)

I'm trying to create a slideshow video in iMovie. The process seemed pretty straight forward, and seemed to be going nicely. I got all the images imported into iMovie and added the music to the timeline as I wanted. When I previewed my results though, I was less than pleased.
After viewing the preview, the Ken Burns effect was the exact same zoom/pan for every picture--it wasn't randomizing the effect like it does when you do a slideshow from within iPhoto or Front Row. Any way to get it to randomize the effect? There's just way to many pictures in this compilation (250+) to go through and change it up a bit for each.
At this point, I figured I'd just go with the slideshow export feature in iPhoto since it does randomize the Burns effect. Yeah, that didn't go so hot either. Apparently, you can only add one music track, so I had to find a utility to combine the MP3s we were going to be using. Looked like this was going to work until we played it after the (LONG!) export process. Turns out, the slideshow somehow ended up a whole four minutes shorter than what I had in iMovie. Apparently the default transition speed of 5 seconds does not hold true to iPhoto slideshows. Plus, much to my surprise there is absolutely no fade-out in the music at the end--it just abrubtly stops. Not cool.
There's got to be a way to make that (very cool) Ken Burns effect randomize in iMovies I'd think. Any suggestions?

Although you cannot permanently remove the Ken Burns effect option, you can set your default to having it off.
You need to apply your settings to a particular photo and then the changes should be the new default.
Drag any photo into the timeline. Select 'show photo settings' and deselect KB effect and update that photo.
Close or hide photo settings. Click on something else. If you don't want the photo in your timeline, delete it.
When you open the 'show photo settings' again, your recent changes should be there.
If this process does not work for you, try deleting iMovie's preference file.
With iMovie closed, go to your Home file(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash. iMovie will create a new one when you reopen it.
    Reopen iMovie.

  • How can I play a video created in iMovie 06 on AppleTV?

I have a video project that I created in iMovie 06. How can I play this on AppleTV?

Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately I'm still not able to get this to work.
First, I don't see an export to Quicktime in AppleTV format setting. The only choices that I have are export to Quicktime in Full, CD, email or streaming video format.
I tried both full and CD but I still cannot get it to my AppleTV. Once the video is in Quicktime format I drag and drop the file into my iTunes library. It shows up in the movies directory on Itunes but when I sync Itunes with Apple TV - nothing. Everything else syncs but just not the quicktime movie.
    Any ideas?

I have a MacBook Pro. How do I capture a still picture from a video in iMovie and print the still picture?

Click iMovie/About. If you have version 9.0.4 (iMovie 11) this will work. If you have an earlier version, this will also work, but there are also other ways.
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
I have created a short video Tutorial on how to do this. There is one error in the Tutorial, where it says that Command-click is the same as right-click. I should have said Control-click instead.

  • Movies.old created and iMovie Projects lost

Anyone seen an issue where they connect to a networked home directory and certain home folders are deleted? In this example the original Movies folder is gone and Movies.old created
(I had a previous post in another category which was never answered so I'm trying here).
Client computer is 10.6.2 Intel Mac. Created a network home directory on Mac OS X Server 10.4.11
Everything working fine - user creates and iMovie. Week later, logs in and Movies folder is gone and Movies.old in it's place has no files.
Any ideas of where to start looking?

Yes they can be deleted if you have moved all the projects you want to work further on to iMovie 10, have checked that they are working OK, and are happy with switching permanently to iMovie 10.  (There's no going back).
On the other hand if you leave them you can still use the earlier version of iMovie.
    Geoff.
