Distorting solid freezes FCP X

I have FCP X 10.1.1
I have a 1.5 minute project in 1080p. In my project, if I drag the Gray Solid generator onto the timeline and then try to distort it, this freezes up FCP X every single time.
Anyone experiencing this behavior?
Thanks

Thanks, Russ.
I tried trashing the prefs and it didn't fix it.
Yes, it's on all projects.
What happens is I place the gray solid on top of another clip. I then click on the Distort option in the viewer and when I drag the corners, the corner and outline interface element move around the viewer as you would expect, however the gray solid is still filling the screen. It does not update it - it doesn't distort it. When I left go of the house button, the outline is left where I let it go, but the solid is still full screen. Selecting Undo does not undo. If I try to distort it again by grabbing the handlebars, it freezes.
I was able to bring in a bitmap from Photoshop and distort that just fine. It only happens with the solid inside FCP X, so far.
Very strange.

  • Screen distorts and freezes

I have an HP Pavilion Media Center m8000n, product# RX881AA, running Windows Vista.  The screen willl suddenly distort into horizontal lines, colored or black and white depending on what was being displayed.  All diagnostics check out okay, also checked for software conflicts and viruses.  Best Buy Geek squad checked twice, and said problem may be video card related.  What else can I try?  I am almost ready to throw this computer away!

I have the same problem on my A305-S6872. My screen becomes garbled just like you show and a restart of the computer fixes the problem. My computer doesn't freeze when it happens, I can still do things but just can't really see what I'm doing. The problem happens randomly, maybe once or twice a month. I have warranty but can't duplicate the problem since its so random. I know if I send it in for repair, they will just send it back since it will probably be working properly when they test it. If anyone has any idea what is happening, I would love to know! Thanks!

  • Corrupted clip freezing FCP X during background rendering.

When I open a particular project, the background rendering starts up and gets to 35% where it then freezes the whole job.
Had to do a Force Quit.
This first occured during colour/exposure modifying, btw.
On start up of FCP I can review the video in the project window and see that a small part of one clip is corrupted, but as soon
as I open FCP (10.0.7) it attempts the backgound render before I can stop it, there-upon freezing.
Can the particular offending clip be successfully removed before I open FCP?
15" MBP with retina display, OSX 10.8.2
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that - "selected", but not "opened" I see.
Also, I reckon they should change the confusing menu item "Project Properties" to straight "Projects" Yes-No?
    RussH
The particular clip would jump around - black frames-out of position frames -staccato playback.
As I said, this was after I'd tried colour adjustments that wouldn't render beyond a certain point.
Thanks for that lead to Pro Maintenace Tools. Does it work specifically with FCP X?  Will check it out.
I do have the very handy Event Manager X.
    Thanks all

  • Distorted lines freeze on boot

I have an 2006 macpro, nvidia 8800gt, yesterday my mac froze during diagnostics by onyx, there were green and pink wavy lines on screen, i did a hard shut down then trying rebooting, but immediately i see green vertical distorted lines and the boot doesn't get past by the apple logo. it freezes and have to shut it down.
    i've tried:
    resetting pram, smc
removing half the ram and then the other half
installed a new hdd, didn't really matter the same
i even removed all hdd, the same
can't start from os x dvd drive, freezes,
    the same for safe mode
it does enter verbose mode, still the same lines, but i can't read all the commands, it's like it's half towards the left and other half is at the far right, but only the first letter of the commands, it's like i have a second screen.
now 2 weeks ago, i had a similar problem but my mac didn't even boot.
i replaced my graphics card and it worked fine, but just for a week, then again the same wavy lines during mac os x environment
    any ideas?

  • Color Distorted Screen Freeze

Have you ever seen a crash/freeze like this?  The screen goes completely bonkers, with a very pixelated color distortion, and is unresponsive.  One time I tapped the trackpad, and it flickered back to normal appearance, but remained frozen.  It's a 15" macbook pro, last generation model with all of the latest OS updates.  Any suggestions, warnings, and feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

Have you tried latest VGA drivers from Nvidia? ==> http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Does the issue happend in other games too?
Have you tested VGA in another machine?

  • Screen Distortions and Freezes

I recently started having a problem with my Macbook Pro where the screen would suddenly split and flip sides. I could still move the mouse but nothing else responded so I would have to shut it down. It started happening more frequently and then got to a point where it couldn't even get to the log in screen when restarting. I took it to an Apple Service Provider and they replaced the logic board. It had no problems for about two weeks, but now the issue has returned. There is no obvious pattern that predicts when the screen will distort. It seems different every time, and sometimes the screen just goes black. What is likely the issue since the logic board replacement seems to have been unsuccessful?
Interestingly, the most recent time it happen, I took a screenshot of the split and flipped screen, but in the image, the screen looks normal.

Did you ever figure out the cause? Mine just started doing the same thing. (Late 2011 macbook pro 15 inch)

  • Freeze FCP 7 in Time?

OK, so what's the best way to safeguard FCP 7 assuming Apple doesn't make a serious adjustment here?
Should we all load an offline MacPro / MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and Final Cut Studio 3 and keep it
offline for life so it doesn't need updates?
Is this the end of Professional Editing for Apple? Are they really killing off the Industry standard for editing?

No free upgrade to FCP X. But I'd imagine there is a huge demand for copies of FCP 7 now that it is discontinued so if you'd rather have FCP X you could always sell FCP 7.
If what you have is an upgrade to FCS 3, that is one thing. If you have the full FCS 3 package, then if you sell it you'll no longer have access to DVD Studio Pro, Color, Soundtrack Pro, etc.

  • FCP or DVD error?

I am editing a video perfectly fine in FCP (5.1.4). When I look at footage on the timeline, there are no errors, skips, distortions, etc. However, when I burn the finished QuickTime version to DVD using iDVD (5.0.1), certain areas of the disc has errors (distortions, skips, freezes).
I watch the DVD on my iMac and there is no problem with the disc. However, watch the DVD on any other DVD player (Sony, XBOX, etc), and there are problems.
It seems this is happening to every DVD I have been making lately, and this is really becoming a problem that needs solving very quickly.
And even when I make two versions of a disc (Close View & Group View), the errors usually happen on the same dances. The disc even freezes during DVD menu selection on certain dances!
    Help!

The general consensus here is to encode your audio to AC3, which will help free up some bandwidth for your video. iDVD uses uncompressed audio (I think).
Michael is absolutely correct - the use of (uncompressed) AIFF audio is what causes most of the known hiccups with iDVD-produced discs. Especially for the symptons you're reporting (skipping, freezing, etc).
So let me second Michael's advice: use Compressor for audio and video. However, one small alteration to his settings. In most cases, since you've probably adjusted your volume levels to taste in FCP, set Dialog Normalization to -31 (from the default -27) to effectively shut off this feature. In case you're audio isn't adjusted, use the dialog normalization feature to set the appropriate volume level (for most DVD projects, that's -12)
That said, sometimes the issues that you're reporting can be related to the brand of media that you're using. Or have you tried another?

  • Can't open fcp project file - fcp not responding

starts to open project but gets to 23% and freezes fcp...project is being stored on a lacie 250gig protable hd with firewire. never had this issue after tons of work. tried going to a autosave version but tried several and they freeze up fcp
any ideas short of moving all the media to another drive and starting a new project (I was just about to start cutting this project today).

    Welcome to the forum!
Post the version of FCP you're running.
Try opening a new project file, then importing the captured clips into it... might fix this... If you trash your preferences for FCP found in the user/library/preferences/FCP User data folder, you can just click on the application and it won't try to open the last project file.
Can you open earlier project files OK?

  • Burned dvd's distorted when being played.

I am new to the Mac world. I recently downloaded Mac the Ripper and Bought Popcorn. I am able to copy my dvd's to my hard drive without a problem. I can also burn the TS file to my dvd's. However when i go to play it in the DVD player it is distorted and freezes. The sound seems to be there but it will not play long enought to hear. Popcorn says it is completed and there is no errors. I need some suggestions and help.
    Thanks

Being a new purchase, this shouldn't be an issue, however, is your Popcorn at version 1.0.3?
After you use Mac the Ripper, can you use the Apple DVD player to view the movie? Any issue there?
Have you looked over the Popcorn discussion forum at http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?s=36c69af3b36aa68483464ad277784494&sho wforum=50

  • Help. G Drive freezes while rendering, hard reboot only way out.

I have asked about this two prior times in forums.
When rendering in FCP X, the G-Drive loses communication with laptop. Freezes FCP X. Only way to unfreeze is hard reboot (pushing down power button). Convinced it was a dying G-Drive, I bought a new one, cloned the old one before running Disk Warrior. Same behavior on the new one,  so it cannot be the drive. It is a 1TB G-Drive 7200rpm, connected via firewire 800. Spent 2.5 hours on the phone with Apple support, nothing. I do not think they could even understand the issue, and I talked to 4 different people. One of them told me you should always have projects and events on your internal OS drive for editing, not attach any external drives (no, I am not kidding). They seemed to all think I was using Aperture for some reason, weird, since I never mentioned that program and do not even own it.
I am a pro here, and I am not doing anything I should not be. I have run disk warrior on all disks involved. I have repeated this process in different projects with multiple types of media, making me think that the media is not corrupted.  I have used disk utility several times, no errors or permission issues. I have trashed render files, preferences from the library, and re-installed FCP X.
I am now left to buying a new everything, but of course I cannot afford that
I read on G-Drive support page about these drives sometimes freezing up, but my issue does not relate to those.
I could really use a pro's pro or someone who has been down this road. I have been dealing with this since Tuesday, I dont have to tell you how far this has me behind.
    2009 MacBook Pro
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    G-Drive 1TB 7200 rpm, firewire 800 connection
    G-Drive mini (the new one) 1TB 7200rpm firewire 800
editing AVCCAM 720p24fps,  AVCCAM 1080p60fps, 720p30fps (all from various projects)

That is the next step I suppose. I had to pay $99.00 for the support on the phone, extra care just expired. Trying one more time this morning with phone support.  Thanks Tom.
Still certain projects do not seem to have this issue. I also just installed the free trial of Pro Maintenance Tools, was not able to find any corrupt media.
It said from the crash reports that it may be the graphics card. The card in this computer is well suited for FCP X, but I suppose may be failing. I am under the impression you cannot upgrade this card on a MacBook Pro.

  • What causes screen distortion on MacBook Pro late 2011 (iOS 10.9.5)

My MacBook gets screen distortion and freezes completely. Any idea what's going on?
The distortion looks like horizontal lines with image duplicates and split-screens with black gaps.

    iOS 10.9.5
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7

I tried several restart options and ran hardware diagnostics which didn't uncover anything at all. This MacBook also has plenty of memory and free space and used to run perfect until 5 days ago.

It could be the GPU... What model do you have?
Sadly it seems that a lot of 2011 Macbook Pro models with discrete graphics have this issue:
2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card
Try to go to an Apple Store or an Authorized Service Provider and have a check.
The cases of gpu failure are dramatically increasing over the last months, but sounds like Apple isn't taking care of the problem...

  • Idvd08 freezes when rendering chapters

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Leopard installed and IDVD 08. I have made a long movie in IMovie which has a number of chapters. I created the DVD in iDVD 08 a few weeks before Chrstmas, but when I went to burn the DVD, it kept freezing after a while whilst rendering chapter menus.
I understand this is a known issue between iDVD08 and the Leopard operating system. Does anyone know if this issue has now been resolved or, if not, what is the ETA for a fix?
    Many thanks
    Joe McCrea

    Hello All,
I've been struggling all week-end on a project my son called me in for rescue. I've experienced too that total freeze of my brand new MBP (15"). To make things short: The problem is not solved yet, but I've isolated several facts.
First, it's started with a problem my son had with his school project on a PB-G4 and iDVD fron 08'. It choked because we had imported some 30fps elements into a 25fps project. It choked on muxing those heterogenous elements, even tough "properly" imported by iDVD.
Second. I copied his project to my MBP to benefit from the processing speed increase. On that same project, I didn't reached the point to generating the movie and got the freeze when creating the assets.
I spare you all the events in between. But after clearing that 30fps vs 25fps conflict by regenerating all components in 25fps natively, I identified the exact moment of the crash.
That project uses the Revolution theme from Theme 7.0. I've successfully generated an image file using another Theme like the Concrete Theme from www.dvdthemepak.com
The freeze appears when iDVD comes on generating the first "Scene selection" menu screen from the project. It's kind of odd as this project has 8 chapters requiring an additional scene selection menu. I see the 2nd scene selection menu being processed Ok, and the Top menu too. All menus use the same additional content for the one drop zone the Revolution theme has.
That "freezing" is very odd to me. I'm a unix geek. A system never freezes under Unix. At most, one process can go wild and hog all CPU and never relinquish a cycle before being terminated by kernel. In the case of MacOSX, the freeze is only apparent: the window manager process gets hosed. It's very probable that you can ssh to it from another unix system and shut it down being root. In this freeze. The dual cores of the Intel chips gives more chances accessing the shell level before the machine is brought to a stand still. Here: no CPU overheating. Just a plain solid freeze. I've not tracked any kernel event letting me know of a kernel issue. This is plain odd to me. I'm learning new stuff here.
Back to the issue. I was even fearing at one moment it was disliking the accentuated characters we've used in the menu texts. I eliminated this option too be removing all accents from the vowels.
Needless to say that this Project compiled without a glitch on the PowerBook. At least, we were able to finish that assignment.
Now, my MBP is still not fixed. Gotta call AppleCare for that.
Some additional clues: I got this MBP with iLife loaded in. It was missing the Old Themes I like, plus www.dvdthemepak.com themes. iDVD is smart and proposes you to load those Old Themes from the MacOSX Install disk 2 .... but this fails !!!! As I'm a bit smart I gave a try popping in the iLife 08' DVD and it allowed me to install the missing Old Themes. Now something went wrong because iDVD 7 doesn't behave like iDVD 6 and splits the lastest Themes away from the oldest and custom Themes by copying them to the user's Library folder. It keeps under the /Library only the latests themes.
I manually copied from another Mac the www.dvdthemepak.com themes and this was my mistake. iDVD went totally haywire not even recognising its installed themes, displaying a "Broken Theme" image in a hugly kiddy art crayon chalked letters. Anyways: stand still.
I decided to trash both Themes directory (user and system), pop-in the iLife DVD and reinstall iDVD. I was NOT given the choice to re-install iDVD ! So, I trashed iDVD app and tried again installing iDVD through the iLife DVD. Well, not much luck: The installer doesn't let me install iDVD but only the additional old themes. I went on with this option. "Miracle!" iDVD app was installed, with the additional themes ... but NOT the main themes (5, 6 and 7) Arrrrgh ! I'm choking.
So, I copied from another Mac with iLife 08' the 5, 6 and 7 Theme. And it worked.
Well, not that god as now iDVD freezes with the Revolution 7 theme. It may not be at all linked to all the problems I got updating iDVD from the default instal of a new MBP. At least, by reading this, you people are aware that you can only get the Old Themes from an Web install, or the iLife DVD. But NOT from the supplied DVDs.
I would need to try compiling this project with another Theme from the Theme gallery. That would identify that Themes 7 as being part of the problem (as www.dvdthemepak.com are operational).
Also, I'm eager to learn of a SAFE procedure to reinstall iDVD.
Last: I've not been able to do a "repair permissions" yet on this machine as I don't have a Leopard DVD. The Install disks that come with the MBP are not bootable. There is a different procedure that requires a specific set of actions in "to reinstall Leopard" in order to boot on those DVD. I'm scared this new procedure really reinstall Leopard, which will be a catastrophe of biblical proportions to me!
Very last. I still need to dig in the archived system logs to see if iDVD reported something before the freeze.
Hoping this help. I promise I'll post updates here when available.

  • Display Issues with Mac Pro 1.1 HELP!!

    I have a Mac Pro 1,1:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP11.005D.B00
    SMC Version: 1.7f10
    Running OSX 10.6.3
I'm on my second graphics card [ATI Radeon HD 2600] after having issues with the original [NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT]. The issue with the NVIDIA card was that, at times, it would display digital artifacts, glitches, distortion and freeze up the system forcing me to have to do a hard shut down. I found many reports of similar issues with that card and the Mac Pro 1,1's.
When I replaced it with the ATI the problem went away for 6 months and now IT"S BACK.
So, are there any particular graphics cards that work OK with the Mac Pro 1,1? I don't want to waste my money again only to encounter the same issue!
I'm also contemplating getting a new Mac all together.
Please advise, I've read many threads with this issue and they all seem to point to the same deal: replace the card. I can't afford to keep replacing graphics cards.
    Saki

The 2600XT required 10.5.2+ and while it may 'look' like a G5 the Mac Pro is not. G5 refers to IBM PowerPC based, not Intel Xeon EFI based.
You're running 10.6.3, might want to update your profile itself.

  • Word to the wise: title 3d and autorender function

If you have the auto-render function turned on, open title 3-d and walk away for lunch, you'll freeze FCP.
You get the little "Auto render complete" box, but you cannot click OK because it comes from FCP, which becomes idle when you open 3d.
Possible lessons: don't eat lunch. Don't use auto render. Don't leave title 3d open. Eat in the edit room and keep working. Save early, save often.

I've had this happen and I think I got out of it by pressing return - couldn't click on it, but I could press return or ESC. Nasty trap, tho...
