Distortion problems with new iPod Classic

Hello:
I recently purchased a 160GB iPod Classic to replace a 2-year-old 60GB iPod. I had no problems updating the new one; about a zillion tracks went in very smoothly in about a half-hour. But I have noticed a couple of problems:
First, I always listen to my iPod at work on a Klipsch dock, and even though I keep it set at a fairly low volume (all of the content is classical music), I'm getting crackling and distortion in random spots in music. It doesn't seem to matter if the music was downloaded from iTunes or imported from a CD. It's definitely not the dock, because I tried the old iPod on it and it worked as well as it always did.
Second, when I select a playlist and start playback, I notice that more often than not, the first second or two of music is cut off. I have to press the back arrow on the iPod, and then playback is correct.
That is a minor annoyance, but the the distortion problem is far more serious. I never had either problem on the old iPod, and I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems with the iPod Classic. I'd HATE to think I'd have to trash 40GB of music and start all over importing CDs.
Thanks for any input you can give me.

thanks for the suggestion but it did not work.
The iPod came up asking for the password (WEP key) and i entered it. It showed connected with the router but Safari does not work and when i check the DHCP entries in see the following
IP: 169.254.202.45
Sub: 255.255.0.0
This means that the connection was made but the router DHCP server did not assign an IP address to the iPod.
This exact problem i have encoutered so far in my office, a cofeeshop and a car dealership. In all cases the wirelles was based on an older linksys router and except in the case of my office the other two were unsecured networks.
I believe it has something to do with the firmware on those linksys routers causing a problem specificaly to iPods and i would guess iPhones too since they have the same OS.
I'm open to any suggestions but i've tried all the ones posted in this and other forums so far with no luck.
When i assign a static IP, the iPod again connects, the router log indicates outgoing traffic from that IP but there is no incomming traffic.

Thanks, for info, iPod Classic is a slower machine compared the Nano, unfortunately, if you read these discussions, majority of the freezes involved iTunes 10. Although if might be just slow and some impatient user just disconnect the iPod ands cause more problems. ( Yes I also did that but safely by doing a iPod Hard Reset, before disconnecting).
Here is the Apple support article that may help you.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717
or my usual solution for Windows Users.
Antivirus has a tendency to freeze iTunes sync Operation with iPod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your iPod filesystem, so when iTunes can't read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
    My suggestion.
Connect your iPod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your iPod to the PC, using a high speed USB 2.0 port at the back of your PC, do not use any USB Hub.
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
    Good Luck!

I am having problems getting my Ipod classic to sync with Itunes.  Is 2.0.4 the current firmware for me to use with my Ipod using Windows 8?  If not, please let me know what firmware I need to use.  Thank you.

    Hey catwoman001,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far! iPod software version 2.0.5 is available for the iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009). If this is your model, you may want to update the iPod. If you are having issues with your iPod, the following troubleshooting assistant may help:

  • Many Problems with new iPod

It all started out when I got my nice shiny new iPod. I installed the latest 64 bit version of iTunes and connected my new iPod. First thing iTunes told me was that the iPod was corrupt and needed to be restored. I thought no big deal. The iPod is new with nothing on it so I had nothing to lose. The iPod was stuck in restore mode for about 8 hours and I gave up. I rebooted the computer and reconnected the iPod. Now iTunes could not see the iPod.
You may need to know that this computer is a newer Dell Studio XPS running the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium.
I followed all of the recommended solutions on the page for Windows not seeing an iPod. When it came to reinstall iTunes is when the real challenge started. Lots of problems with not being authorized to write some registry keys and iTunes would roll back the installation. Each time I installed iTunes I installed as Administrator. I had to jump through all of the hoops of deleting these registry keys what would not delete. I installed several times, each time deleting a new registry key that the installer would not overwrite. After 2 days I finally got iTunes reinstalled.
However iTunes would still not see the new iPod. Messed around with this for another few hours.
I have an old computer that I seldom use. This is an older Dell Dimension running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. It had an old version of iTunes. I thought I would try getting the iPod to work on this computer. This would at least tell me if there was a problem with the iPod itself. I updated the iTunes to the latest version. Connected the iPod. It was seen but said the iPod was corrupt. Did a restore and all appeared to work fine. So this tells me the problem is not with the iPod, but with iTunes on the other computer.
I went to my other computer, the one that I want to use iTunes on, and reconnected the iPod. It was seen this time but iTunes said that the iPod was corrupt and needs to be restored. I started the restore process. It has been restoring for over 10 hours now.
I really don't want to start over with all of the problems I had reinstalling iTunes.
Anyone have some suggestions on what to try next?

Made some progress during my lunch break. I started suspecting a problem with the USB driver for this iPod. I found KB article 1538 which was helpful.
I went to the device manager and deleted anything that looked like an Apple device and deleted all USB mass storage devices. I also deleted the device drivers for these items at the same time. I then scanned for hardware changes and the iPod was found.
The iPod is now seen in Windows Explorer. It still has the name I gave it when it was connected to my other PC. So I suspect the restore that was taking over 10 hours never had a chance to start. From Windows Explorer I was able to access some folders on the iPod.
iTunes would still not see this iPod. However I hope a reboot will solve this.
Ran out of time and needed to go back to work. I will update how this worked.

  • Problem with new iPod software update and Robi DAB radio

There seems to be a compatability issue between my iPod Classic and my Robi DAB radio attachment. The DAB radio was working just fine until last week, when I downloaded the latest iPod software updates. Since then, the Robi works fine when it is used as a remote control for the iPod, but when it is used in radio mode, the iPod shuts down after a few minutes (as though it does not recognise that the radio is still attached, and thinks that there is no activity) and the Robi closes down too (due to lack of battery power when the iPod is no longer on). It could be a coincidence, but my guess is that the iPod updates are causing a problem.
I have tried to remove the new software updates from the iPod, ie I deleted the latest updates from the iPod software updates file (C/Documents and Settings/user name/Application data/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPod Software updates), unchecked the box labelled "automatically check for software updates", and then tried to restore the iPod using the old software. At that point, a message from iTunes appeared, to the effect that it could not go any further due to no internet connection. I could not find any way of restoring the iPod without letting iTunes download the current sortware updates.
So the question is, does anyone else have a similar compatability problem (with the Robi or anything else) and how can I get the iPod to run on the previous software?
I would be very grateful for any advice, as this is a very frustrating problem.

The good news is that I removed the most recent iPod software update, restored the iPod (ie returned it to factory settings and reloaded all 14500 songs) and now I am really pleased to say that the iPod and the Robi are working together again in harmony, which is a huge relief.
    Since I had inadvertently deleted the previous version of the iPod software from my PC, I had to download the files from here;
    http://rapidshare.com/files/73863240/1.0.3.zip.html
I have contacted Roberts Radio about this problem. The recent 1.1 software update must be even more frustrating for them, since they have sold lots of Robi radios.
    If anyone needs help to revert to the previous iPod software, have a look at this thread, where the instructions are printed in red;

  • Problem with my iPod classic 160gb - making funny noises, and no download

Hi, At the same point every time i try to put music on my ipod classic 160gb, it begins to make a funny noise, and itunes and the ipod freezes. I have to disconnect it unproperly, and the message "The ipod disk could not be read from or written to", but my old music still remains. So i tried to restore the ipod on my macbook, but i still have the problem.
This is the 4th Ipod classic 160gb i have had, and there has been a harddisk problem with all of them, so this could be the problem, but the funny click-clack sound is new to this one.
Anybody in here have experience with such kind of problems?
Hope to get the problem solved soon.
    Oliver Nash, DK.

Unfortunately, when a hard drive starts clicking that means it's going bad. The mechanism is having trouble reading the drive. Since the iPod is mostly just a harddrive and a battery I have a feeling that this is your problem.
    watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMm6c3fr-fU
about 25ss in is where the clicking starts. If it sounds like that, but softer and more muffled since it is a smaller drive that is being enclosed then I think you might be SOL. Maybe if you're iPod is still under warranty you can get a credit and go for a touch and avoid moving parts all together?

  • Problems with new iPOD shuffle

Just got a new iPOD shuffle, and can't get it to work. i followed all the troubleshooting directions (worked on it for about 2 hours, twice)with the same problems. Updated the software version, restored the settings, no help. I copied all my CD with no problem, and the PC plays them perfectly in iTunes. Have the follwing errors. I think this is just a bad unit:
    1. "Cannot read or write to disk"
    2. "Unit could not be restored. Unknown error occurred" (1418).
    3. "Unit could not be restored. Unknown error occurred".

Try to restore it with Apple's restore software:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305204
They recommend using this if itunes cannot restore the ipod.
Another ideas I ran across when solving an error (Windows cannot load installer for volume. Contact your hardware vendor) I was getting, in case the above didn't work:
When you plug the device in have my computer open. When you see the device (F:?) right click on it and do a quick format. That apparently cleared up a lot of user's problems.
If itunes opens before you do this it won't work or will disappear from my computer.
If this doesn't work, did you get any error warnings when you plugged it in that could be causing it?

  • Serious problem with my iPod Classic/iTunes

I have a 6th Generation iPod classic (80 GB), and recently, I have been having some serious problems with it.
When I connect it to iTunes, there is usually no problem, it shows up, plays and displays the music correctly, etc. However, if I try to ADD any music to it, iTunes will freeze, then close, and within 5 minutes, my entire computer will freeze completely, and be shut off. For whatever reason, happen when my iPod finally disconnects because my computer turned off, all of my music is missing from the library (This doesn't happen every time it freezes, because I try to disconnect my iPod manually before everything freezes). The music is still on the iPod, (it says that I have XX.X GB of "other" instead of music/videos), but it doesn't show up. When I plug in my iPod, iTunes says that there was a problem and I need to restore it. The first time this happened, I lost over 5,800 songs, but I forgave Apple, because these things do occasionally happen, plus I had no idea what exactly went on. The SECOND time happened within the same week, after I had put 800 songs back on the restored iPod. The first time happened when I was using iTunes 10 (which is seriously buggy on my computer, and freezes often), so I switched to iTunes 9 (still buggy, but doesn't freeze quite as much), and the same thing happened. So now I'm thinking it's my iPod's fault. My iPod does a whole host of minor problems over time such as making certain songs cut off at a certain specific point for no reason (Always the same song, always the same cut off point, and I can't fast forward past it, I also can't delete the songs because if I highlight them on iTunes, iTunes will freeze, and if I find them under the music folder in iPod control, my computer will freeze), freezing the entire iPod for seemingly no reason, and somehow messing up my album artwork (it will appear as "Colourful Static"), along with alot more.
I know this is a troublesome problem, but if anyone could somehow shine some light on this problem, it would be tremendously appreciated.
    Thank you

  • Problems with new ipod touch gen3

    Hi,
I just got a new ipod touch and i have problems connecting it with my WRT54GX ver 2 wirelles router. It shows that is connected but when i check the IP it has the default 169.254.202.45  one which means that the AP did not assign an IP. I tried with static IP and although in the log it shows outgoing communication from that IP the ipod does not connect to the internet.
A PC and a blackberry are working fine with this AP and the ipod has worked fine in my house (RUKOUS AP) and in two cofeeshops.
Anyone else having a similar problem?
    Thanks

  • Problem with syncing ipod classic with iTunes and multiple accounts

Hi I have a 80gig ipod classic that I have just been using as is without putting any new music on it. I haven't had it hooked up to a computer or itunes in a couple years I've just been listening to the same music and using an iphone instead. To compound things I now have a couple (that I know about) apple id's that I am using. And a old HP computer which I am unsure if I can get running or salvage any of the music of it to transfer to my new Macbook Pro. I have logged onto apple and changed the password/id of the old apple id to authorize my new mac. I had some files transferred from the ipod to my new itunes but am still missing some 1100 songs. When I have tried to sync it I get an apple id prompt that I have never used before. I had my old apple id come up and with the new password got it to authorize on my Mac. Any help or direction on this will help me to bumble my way through until I can get to an apple store and try to get some help there. Thanks in advance!!!!!

  • Using old wall charger with new iPod Classic

I just got a new 80Gb iPod Classic to replace my old original 20Gb model. Can anyone tell me if the wall charger that came wiht the older model will work to charge the newer one?

  • Problem with new IPod Touch - connecting to computer

Just bought an IPod touch 2nd generation and plugged it into my computer to charge and to set up. I got a "found new hardware-Ipod" message and then the "found new hardware wizard" screen came up asking me for an installation CD or floppy to install software. I already have iTunes installed (the newest version) as have used it before with an Ipod nano. I have tried plugging the ipod into different USB ports on the computer but no avail.
Could anyone help me with this problem as am desperate to use my new Touch?
    Thanks

All was well with my 2nd Generation Itouch until I downloaded Itunes 8.2. then ol boy what problems I have had! As follows:
    1) Itunes cannot detect my device, therefore, no syncing is possible
    2) Cannot connect to the Itunes Store....error indicates I have problems with my network connection (error code 3221), although I am connected and I have not previously had a problem.
I have searched for possible resolutions and have:
    (a) Uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled .... NO GOOD
    (b) Reset the network settings on the Itouch .... NO GOOD
    (c) Reset all settings ... NO GOOD
    (d) Ensured that the Apple mobile device option are okay
etc etc. In fact, I have done everything possible that has been indicated on the various websites. I should confirm that my computer recognises my Itouch BEFORE I access Itunes.
    Please help.

  • I am having problems with my iPod Classic crashing after a partial sync with my library.  It also disconnects on it's own causing an error.

I have an iPod 120gb Classic That I bought to use with an Apple Universal Dock connected to my home stereo.  Since day one when I put the iPod in the dock it flashes rapidly between "connected, eject before disconnecting" and "disconnected, error".  Eventually it usually settles down and is functional.  Sometimes this flashing screen scenerio goes on for several minutes.
This morning I got tired of putting up with this problem and tried to restore and update the i{Pod hoping that it would fix the problem.  So, I did the restore but when I tried to reload my music it stopped part way through the sync.  Additionally, it seems to disconnect on it's own during sync and updates.
    Any ideas?  Thanks!

I had the same issues with my iPod touch & iPhone. It's a known issue with the touch & Linksys G routers. Go into settings on the touch & do the following.
    1. Settings - wifi - linksys
    2. Erase your DNS settings & input same numbers as in router
    Settings.
    3. Http proxy should be
    in off position.
    4. Close out & open safari you should now have a wireless
    connection.

  • Two main problems with new iPod Touch

I received my new iPod Touch 32Gb last week and I've been trying and testing for some days. It's really a nice device, but I've found two big problems with it...
1.- WiFi connections are extremely unreliable. On my home router it connects and gets the right IP from DHCP but then it gets stuck and can't transfer data. Safari seems to work sometimes, YouTube and maps are almost impossible to use, and other apps works only sometimes.
I've tryed also on my office WiFi network and it's a little better. But when connection is not used for a minute it gets stucked againg. Then I need to go to settings, switch WiFi off and on again, then works again for some time.
I've spend days searching on the Internet for a solution and I've found that lots of people has the same problem. It seems iPods have serious problems connecting to some routers and blame the router about this.
My opinion is that the problem is with the iPod. My router works flawlessly with my two laptop computers, my desktop computer, my PSP, and my HTC PDA. No problems at all. So, where's the problem?
2.- There's a big problem on iTunes with sync settings. I've noticed that users can select to to transfer the data manually or synch. Then on each tab for media you have individual options. For example I can choose to sync music and photos, but not sync videos and Podcasts.
The problem is that this don't work at all. I've selected to sync music but not videos but when sync all my videos had been deleted from my iPod.
I don't see the point on placing independent sync option on iTunes if they don't work at all.

Sounds like a faulty battery to me. Might need to contact Apple about that.
As far as the volume, I'm pretty sure, as I just responded to another post, the problem is the software. Any ios version 4.0 and higher, the volume is lower than iPod Touch/iPhones with 3.1.3 and lower. My volume has been lower ever since I upgraded to 4.0 and 4.2, and I've found a lot of other people online complaining about the same thing. I've seen a couple posts where some have said Apple lowered the volume on purpose. I think we just need to complain to them and hope they release an updated ios with the volume raised back to where it was.

  • Many problems with new iPod nano

I had an iPod Mini for a year, and never had any problems with it. Last month, I bought a Nano (4 GB), and I've already had several problems. Has anyone else experienced these issues?
    1. When I jog with it (which is very often), it often skips.
    2. Several times the purchased music has stopped playing altogether. When I try to play purchased songs, they just skip directly to the next song. The problem is temporarily solved when I restore my Nano, but it then resurfaces within 2 or 3 days- and I have to restore it again. Bottom line, it's a recurrent issue.
    3. In the last 3 days, I can't turn off my Nano (it has nothing to do with the "hold" switch being out of place). It operates otherwise normally, but nothing happens when I hold down the "play/pause" button. I tried resetting it and restoring it, but the problem isn't solved.
I can't seem to find any good references in the Troubleshooting tips Apple has posted.
Thanks for any help that you may be able to give me on solving any of these 3 issues.

Numbers 1 and 2 may be related. The iPod nano will not skip just because you are jogging (it does not have a harddrive).
