Distortion when recording

Hi,
I recently bought a dv7-6135dx and I have been trying to record with Audacity. While recording everything is fine, but when I play it back it sounds very distorted. Audacity says that I have three options for recording devices. Microsoft Sound Mapper and Integrated Microphone Array both distort the audio, but Stereo Mix plays it back perfectly fine. I also tried an external mic, but that distorted it as well. Is there any way that i can fix this?

Uninstall the audio/sound drivers from Control panel completely and restart the computer. Install the updated drivers from here

  • Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro in Vista x64: "Skipping" (Distortion) when record

Hi! I've just setup Vista x64 and installed the latest Drivers for my Audigy 2ZS Platinum Pro. Besides the fact that there's no software available for convenient control of the features of my soundcard (Surround Mixer, Speaker Settings, THX Console etc.), everything is fine for playback (after adjusting the bass and treble-sliders to their 0dB-Position!). But I've got a massive problem when recording audio, or when using the microphone: I can play back sound from any source without distortion, but when recording it or using the microphone for VoIP-Applications like Skype, Teamspeak or In-game communication, I get a constant "skipping" distortion like the clicking when a CD is defective and skips.
It sounds like short disruptions which come at regular, very short intervals (approx. 0 per second or so). This effect is always present, irrespective of the load situation of the system and does not change with it. In XP32, my Audigy 2ZS still works like a charme. Furthermore, I've got a "PCI Input Device" in Device Manager with a question mark, although the Firewire-Port does work. Could this be the Gameport not beeing recognised But that's not nearly as problematic as the flaw from above... Thanks in advance for your advice!

I'd like to also add that I have been observing this same problem for quite some time now. While I do not frequently have a need to record, that is changing now and I would rather not have to reboot to Windows XP in order to have functional recording capabilities.
I am currently running a dual-boot configuration of Windows XP/SP2 and Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit/SP, with the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum soundcard, and the latest drivers available for the card as of today's date (0/7/2008).
A clip of audio to illustrate the problem may be heard by saving and playing the MP3 file found at http://ambress.com/audigy/audio_recording_fault.mp3. The following graphic also illustrates how the sound is like a series of recorded pulses, making recording completely useless.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback confirming this problem by Creative and what solution is available or when one is to be expected. If a solution is known by any users that perhaps I have missed in searching the forum, of course I'd be grateful for that help as well.
    Thank you,
    Daryl

  • Ghastly digital distortion while recording

I ran into a really bad problem tonight when trying to record and could use some sage advice.
I'm getting a lot of digital distortion when recording any audio on any audio track using either of the mic inputs on my Presonus Firebox interface. There's no noticeable distortion when monitoring the recording using hardware monitoring through the Firebox, but it's very noticeable on playback.
I've confirmed that this is not a gain-staging problem (the Firebox clipping indicator does not come on and the levels going into Logic were all well below -6dBFS), it's not a problem specific to a mic or to any mic, and it's not a mic cable problem either: it happens with DI'd guitars, vocals, you name it. It does not happen when recording an audio instrument, nor does it happen when playing back previously recorded tracks, nor does it happen when playing streaming music. I don't have an easy way of checking the line-level inputs on the Firebox, but if need be I can look into that tomorrow as well. I recorded with the setup successfully this morning, so the problem would have developed this afternoon or evening when I fired everything back up. And, FWIW, since running into the problem tonight I've successfully moved files to and from the Firewire hard drive I record to. If it's significant, I typically hot-plug the Firebox when shutting it down for the evening since it doesn't have a power switch .
I obviously have a nice long wait on hold with Presonus and / or Apple tech support to look forward to tomorrow, but for the meantime I'd love it if any of you could help me determine whether the problem is with my Macbook or with the Firebox. And if you are in possession of The Answer, please share it with me.
    Thanks,
    Trent

I've had a problem with going from GarageBand to Logic. Total distortion of audio in playback (didn't record anything new, just played existing audio). The simple fix is to open Audio Hardware and Drivers preferences and uncheck/recheck core audio. The handshake seems to take care of it. Not sure if this applies to you or not. I've a 002 rack for an interface.

  • IPhone 5 Distorted Video Recording and Screen Flicker

Love most of the new iPhone 5 features and the speed on LTE service is amazing.  However, my brand new iPhone 5 64GB seems to be having some issues.  Two main issues.
One is an occasional screen flicker consisting of 3 to 5 horizontal black or dark colored lines.  This is located at a point approximately 1/3 of the screen up from the bottom and running from the left edge of the screen to approximately the center of the screen.  The flickering lines are brief and occassional, but deffinately a concern.
The other main issue is with video recording.  I've attended a couple of concerts/shows in the last week.  I used my iPhone 5 to capture a few video clips to share w/ friends etc.  The recorded videos have brief moments of light to moderate, easily visible video distortion.  There's a horizontal distorted digital shaking running the full video width, approximately 1/4-1/3 of the screem and mostly in the center of the video image.  It's not related to playback on the sceen itself, but it is the quality of the video recorded.  I downloaded the videos to my computer and they play with the same video distortion as they do on the phone.  I had previously been impressed with the video qaulity on my 4S.  Perhaps issues with over active "improved video stabilization"?  Aside from those things all else seems to be good minus some occassional delayed touch responses and seemingly delayed photo opening to view from text messaging.
Hardware?  Software?  Bottome line, are these issues that may be resolved in a future Apple iPhone 5 / iOS 6 update or must I get back in line and try to get a new replacemnt phone?

This is not an answer, this is just an additional voice to prove and to make it apperant to Apple that they have to do something about all the problems with the iPhone5. I have as TS encounterd the camera/video destortion apart from my bad reception and battery drain problems.
I bought a 32GB black iPhone5, have already changed it once, because of the battery drain, from 100% to 70% during a night, in stand-by mode(no usage).
This second one, still doesent live up to my excpectations, batterywise my 3,5 years old iPhone 3GS is at pair with my brand new iPhone5, video distortion when recording.
I am going to change it today!! third time's a charm... Lets hope so...

  • DVR620 incorrect aspect ratio when recording DVD or VHS

I have a DVR620KU connected to a Sony Digital LCD Bravia TV, Sony HT-CT100 Home Theater system and a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8300HDC cable box.  I am using HDMI cables except for the connection from the "out" on cable box to the "in" on the DVR620.   When recording from a broadcast program or DVR'd(cable box) program, the picture on the TV while recording, and the DVD or VHS recording when played back, have letterbox like bars top and bottom and the aspect ratio for the picture is stretched.  I have tried eliminating the Home Theater system, but that doesn't help.  Other than that, things work as they are supposed to, including viewing a commercially recorded DVD.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It does mean that the DVR620 is not the problem.
I don't have the same cable box as yours. Mine is an Explorer 4250HDC. Even if they were same, however, I believe different cable systems will handle things differently.
I'm on Time-Warner Cable in central NC. I have that big universal remote model URSU-8800L-TWR.
When I press SETTINGS, I get the Settings menu. On the bottom of the screen is Quick Settings. If I press right arrow several times, I get to High Definition. The choices are AutoHD, Picture Size, Aspect Ratio, and Output Resolution. The choices for AutoHD are on/off. I'm using on.  Picture Size are Zoom, Normal, and Stretch. I am using Normal. Aspect Ratio choices are 4x3 and 16x9. I am using 4x3. Output resolution should probably be 480i for recording to the DVR620. Note that on the NBC channel currently there is letterboxing on the top and bottom. There is no distortion or stretching. I don't see a way to avoid the letterboxing.
Part of the problem with making these changes is that they will affect all output from the cable box, so your HD signal to your TV might not be as good.

  • Garage band/H2 interface distortion in recording?

I am using a H2 as a digital interface in my macbook, and after 10 minutes of recording multiple live tracks, I start to get a static like distortion, shown in the recording level indicator, and in the playback, of the track that I am working on. I have been able to record, with no distortion or problems, with the H2 by itself, but encounter the problem when connected to the Macbook. I suspect it is Garage Band, but has anyone else had a similar problem?
I am also getting a one third of a second delay with the metronome in playback, when recording another track on top of the original.
I took a Garage Band course last summer, and had no metronome problems, and had the distortion problem, 1 time out of 20, using the H2. Does this sound like a hardware or software problem? Thank you for any help

It does seem to be a problem with all Garagebands. I get this distortion, like white noise randomly (usually in the first 2 minutes) and I get this echo (not from monitors) after about 10 seconds of recording. I've tried my H2 on GB 3, 4, 5 on several different computers and they all have this problem. I've tried several updates to the H2, no change. I've tried several different USB cables, no change. I've tried with or without powered USB hub, no change. It still might be a power problem, not enough power from the USB ports.... BUT. I've tried the H2 on the one of the same computers and Logic Express and had no problem. I need to do some further tests but it seems the problem is in Garageband. I'm gonna try Audacity.... also some extended sessions in Logic Express. I do have one more computer I can try all this on as well.

  • Warping of audio quality when recording Synths in GarageBand

I have currently got back into using GarageBand and have noticed a strange error when recording a software synth sound.
When simply playing back the sound through my midi keyboard the sound is fine, but as soon as I hit record and start playing the sound is broken up, and when I stop recording it returns to normal again.
The sound is an ethereal type pad. It almost seems as if Garageband cant handle the sound complexity and is breaking it down but it seems unlikely giving the fact that the platform supports vst's like Absynth which feature plenty of such sounds.
Has anyone else encountered the same problem, and if so, is there a way to correct it?

Your actually using an AU not a VST inside GB. I also use Albino 3. What preset are you using. After you tweaked the Albino preset to your liking check albino signal level output to make sure your new tweaked preset is not overdriving its output. Back off on the master output of Albino if this is the case.
Also check the audio meters on the track you have assigned Albino to in GB. Make sure those levels are ok.
It could also be that you have tweaked a parameter in Albino to the extent that it is beyond the synths parameters to export that sound to GB without distortion, something which may not become apparent until you record it.

  • When recording, strange noises and audio cut offs

When i open garageband and record a basic track (no other programs running), randomly, a scratchy noise that kinda sounds like a distorted, heavy metronome, comes from the left speaker or left headphone.
This noise is not recorded, but comes out very loudly in the monitor.
Also, when recording a basic track, the output audio will completely shut off from the monitor and from everything, but Garageband continues to record and the recording is not affected. This is a huge problem especially if im using a metronome or layering tracks. This does not affect iTunes or anything, JUST GarageBand
please help! should i bring it into a MacGenius?

    Hi ladyshade666-
Does it make this noise if you run the Mac with only the mouse, keyboard and monitor attached?
Are you absolutely sure the sound is coming from within the Mac? I have had a couple of FireWire disks that when connected inject all kinds of noise into my amplified speakers. I turn the drives off when I am in the studio.
Reverse polarity is very dangerous and will cause early demise of power supplies. You may also get yourself electrocuted. It may very well be the noise-causing difference in tour scenario.
I think your first call should be to an electrician.
    Luck-

  • Is a "little" clip ok when recording?

When recording tracks, sometimes I have a recording pass that "clips". Logic tells me that I have "3 continuous samples" that have clipped, or something like that. Is that a big deal?
What I have been doing when that happens is to deleate that pass and record again. I'm sure that I have deleated better performances that had a little clip only to replace them with a "safer" performance that did NOT clip.
What should I be concerned with? Are a few clips ok scattered throughout the performance as long as my MASTER stereo bounce down does NOT clip?
Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Indeed, and the key word is noticable.
Considering that take I did, the guitar was already distorted and I can't really pick out an anomaly (I tried hearing with my eyes closed and looking at the waveform - it seems to blend itself in in this case). Not to mention, that fixing it just may break it. I may try fixing a copy and see what happens.

  • Importing to iMovie: How do I use an external usb mic when recording with the built-in FaceTime HD Camera?

    Hello all
I'm scheduled to work with a friend this week; I'm going to help him make a simple audition DVD.  I promised him I had the necessary equipment and such.
I was importing from the webcam using iMovie.  If I can't use my external mic to record for the video, there is more involved in the editing process.   I was hoping to record the video and audio into one package.  I'm using the built-in FaceTime webcam on my macbook pro and a ZoomH1 on usb.
I've tried changing the audio in system preferences: input to H1.  This works when recording with audacity or anything else.  I even changed the input on FaceTime to H1.  There aren't any preferences I can find in iMovie to change the input for importing video directly from the webcam.
How do I change the audio input for direct import on iMovie?
    OR
Is there something else I can do to have HD video and HQ audio captured in one video file on my macbook pro?
I suppose I can record the video and audio separately but that is usually much more involved.  This is why I got this usb microphone lol.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Seth

I just found using QuickTime Player to record a movie works great.  I can easily change the audio input.  iMovie is silly. lol
If I missed anything let me know.

  • Creating new tracks when recording in Cycle (loop) mode

I'm having an issue when recording in cycle mode.. I'm able to record (in seperate tracks) in cycle mode. however I can only play the first take (first track) I recorded, however all the subsequent tracks that were recorded do not play. Even when I try 'soloing' them they still don't play. You can see in the arrange window that audio data was recorded on those tracks however they have a "faded" effect to them. They're also not muted. Am I missing a setting?

The issue you describe when recording in cycle mode was a huge frustration for me until I discovered that I was not aware of a simple principle that made all of the difference... I am wondering if the following explanation may be part of the problem that you are experiencing.
The principle is that muting a region, muting a track, and muting an audio channel are three distinct and separate functions. Until I got my head around that principle, I continued experiencing the same frustration that you are having with recording in cycle mode.
Recording in cycle mode results in muting the regions below the last take at the top. When trying to unmute the "tracks" below the top region to listen to the other takes, hitting the mute button results in ALL of the "tracks" either being muted or unmuted, yet the separate regions below are still muted!
The key is to unmute the REGION that you want to listen to (and not the track or the channel). The way to do this is to hit the escape key to bring up a local tool box menu wherever your cursor is... then click on the mute tool which changes the cursor into a mute tool, then click on whatever regions you want to unmute...
    Hopefully the above will help.

  • How do I get rid of distortion when playing old CDs in iTunes?

Yesterday I imported a fairly old CD into iTunes and was disappointed to find playback of the CD was so distorted it was impossible to listen to.
    Here are some facts:
All my other music in iTunes still plays perfectly
The CD plays perfectly in QuickTime Player on the same machine from the same drive, so it's not a hardware or CD problem
A newer CD imported today into iTunes imported perfectly
A bit of research on the web suggests it's to do with the fact that the CD was manufactured a long time ago - the date on the disk itself is 1987.
I've upgraded to the latest version of iTunes, removed all iTunes plug-ins from my iMac (as instructed by one of the Apple iTunes troubleshooting pages) and I've also switched off Equalizer, Crossfade, Sound Enhancer and Sound Check, but none of these make any difference.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Is it something to do with the import settings? If so, can you tell me what they should be set to?
    Many thanks

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I wasn't specific about this. I get distortion in iTunes when I play straight from this particular CD and when I import it. With QuickTime, I get no distortion when I play straight from the CD, but (I hadn't tried this before but I just gave it a go) I do get distortion when I play the .m4a file created by iTunes. So presumably it's something iTunes is doing when it processes the .aiff file from the CD.
At the moment the import settings are:
    Import using: AAC Encoder
    Setting: High Quality (128 kbps)
with the 'Use error correction...' box checked.
I've never had to touch them before. Is there a better setting to use for importing early CDs?
    Thanks.

  • I want to be able to use airplay to stream audio to another iOS device, and then use that audio stream to be used when recording video instead of the built in microphone / microphone input. Is this possible?

I want to be able to use airplay to stream audio to another iOS device, and then use that audio stream to be used when recording video instead of the built in microphone / microphone input. Is this possible?

A third-party app probably cannot obtain a stream from another app. To the best of my knowledge, such a capability is not provided in the software development kit, apps being "sandboxed" from each other and so allowed to communicate only in very specific and limited ways.
I'm not completely sure what you mean by "limitations on video capture". An iPhone, to the best of my knowledge, can natively record video only through it's built-in camera, and audio while doing video recording only through the built-in microphone or mic/headphone jack. There might be a video recording app that would allow audio input from an external device connected to the dock connector, but I'm not sure.
    Regards.
