Distortion when using Phono jack

I want to post a fresh thread on this topic because I had a little trouble finding the correct advice, and initially took the wrong advice.
When I first connected up to my stereo using Airport Express the output was heavily distorted.
Turns out this is because I was using the Phono input jack, which, according to this Apple article, applifies the input levels more than the other input jacks:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108059
So the solution is to use any other input jack.

I'm not necessarily saying that this is all there is to it, but it's a sad fact of life that when you remove a lot of the artefacts, especially from an old recording, what's left often appears to be worse than what was there in the first place. Previously you didn't notice them so much, but when you remove clicks, pops, scratches and hiss you often reveal less than stellar recordings - and a lot of older jazz seems to be particularly bad in this respect. Look at Blue Note for example; good for musicians from 39-53, but after that, good for everybody - Rudy Van Gelder's recordings were a very considerable technical  improvement on the earlier output.
It sort-of follows really that one thing you have to be careful of with the click and pop eliminator is not to overdo it (sensitivity and discrimination). Another thing to try, if you are doing other processing too is to find out whether on your recordings, there's a difference between processing the noise before the clicks, or vice versa - that's not exactly unknown. Also, even though you can auto-find all levels, it's worth experimenting with some other different settings too - especially the max threshold settings if you are getting peak distortion.
But the results vary from transcription to transcription, so it's just about impossible to be more specific about what to try. It goes almost without saying that your turntable and cartridge setup needs to be correct, although it's surprising how many people forget about this these days. How well a record is tracked on the turntable can easily make as much difference as the degree of wear does to the results.
In general though, distortion reduction simply can't be achieved. The first person to find a way of accurately removing non-harmonically related distortion from recordings without any reference to the original signals is going to retire very rich!

  • Models that turn off integrated antenna when using antenna jack.

I am looking for a cell phone that has an external antenna jack AND will turn off the integrated antenna when the external jack is inserted. Lets define the term " integrated" as being an internal antenna or the permanent attached external or nub style. This can be on the market now or on the used market. The Treo line, even the old ones, is my primary interest but only because i have tried them and I could check email. Any HP/Palm model cell phone would be fine even if it is only available on the used ebay market. Knowing what models DO and DO NOT have an external jack and knowing what ones WILL and WILL NOT turn off the antenna next to my head will help me narrow down my options. So knowing a model will not do as I want is just as valuable. Thanks for the help. Pete I try to buy local. With cell phones that is hard for obvious reasons. HP has many workers in my hometown so i will support them first. If you can think of a non-HP or PALM company that offers this option please let me know and I will add it to the backup list.

Set all destinations to always ask and select no whenever the phone gives you a request, set Maps to offline, and set location to just use intergrated GPS. By the way, just been to Portugal using Vodafone and data charges only about £5 for week, and they've just improved allowances, may be worth checking your service providers web site and see if it's necessary to bother about data roaming, they all tend to follow each other, and Data roaming charges in europe seem to be coming down !

  • USB Audio distorts when using Stanton T90

I have a Stanton T90 USB turntable that works ok with a PC.
However when used on my Mini Mac after a short time the audio starts distorting.
It seems to be application independent and in the logs I have seen:
Oct 30 23:22:01 Macintosh kernel[0]: WARNING: AppleUSBAudio has detected that a connected USB audio device is sending too much audio data.
Oct 30 23:22:01 Macintosh kernel[0]: WARNING: This USB audio device may not function properly. Please notify the device manufacturer.
Has anyone any ideas how to solve this?
    Yours
    Leon.

    Hello thanks for the feedback.
    I've 1Gb of RAM.
It happened when I only had my mouse and keyboard connected with nothing but Audacity running. However my mouse is connected via my Mac keyboard so I could try that on a separate port. From the error it appears that the USB port is not being read often enough.
Unfortunately it seems that Apple drivers can be just as prone to incompatibilities as Windows. You can find hundreds of articles about these issues with both Audio USB and Firewire devices.
My last step before throwing the turntable back at Stanton will be to reinstall my OS (Leopard) to see if an update has caused the problem.

  • Click/Tick/Hiss sound before audio comes on when using headphone jack.

This started happening yesterday on my 1.5 week old macbook. Whenever an audio source comes through after a period of silence, say on IM without any music from iTunes playing or when you just start playing a song in iTunes, there is a short but very distinct ticking sound that happens before the audio is played. At first I ignored it but after a while, it got really annoying; especially when you're typing in an IM conversation and the tick happens on every send and reply. Is anyone else having this problem? Should I call up applecare/visit my local apple retail store?
It happens on both battery and AC. I've already tried resetting the PMU. I don't think it happens when using the macbook speakers, but I can't say for certain since the freqeuency response on them are pretty bad. And this also happens when I boot into Windows using bootcamp.
P.S. If it turns out that this is a defect, since this is a custom build to order machine, should I call applecare to get it taken care of or would I be fine if I went to the apple store that's 20 mins away?

I just tested using my headphones. I can hear a very short, soft, single tick sound when I click to start playing a track in iTunes. I've never noticed it before. But I don't do IM a lot.
Unless you're hearing something more dramatic, I think you would have a hard time convincing someone in an Apple Store that it's a defect worth fixing.
What about visiting an Apple Store, take your headphones, and try them on floor samples to see if they all do it? If not, you could make a case.

  • Poor quality when using headphone jack as a 'line o

I have a Creative Zen microphoto, and am very disappointed with the audio quality achieved when I plug it into my car stereo, and into the stereo in my home. For both I am using the headphone socket as a line output and am turning up the volume. For the car I am using a Sony cassette adapter (costing approx ?5) to feed into the stereo. At home, I am using a mini jack to phono connector (costing approx ?8) to feed into the aux line input on the stereo.
It is alarming how good a CD sounds on the stereo, compared to a very high quality WMA file on the Zen plaid through the stereo line input.
Do I need much higher quality connecting cables - or is the Zen known to be weak when its output is amplified through other hifi equipment via the headphone output?

Its funny, because i'm doing the EXACT same thing with mine... i have one headphone to rca cord and one cassete adapter cord but to tell you the truth it always sounds good on anything i play it through, but i noticed that if you are using the standard headphones that come with the player, and you have changed your eq, well then you have to mess with your eq for when you plug it into a higher quality output device (such as a large stereo) because whatever your plugging it into has its own eq as well, and i noticed at one point the eq on the player and the eq on the stereo were contrasting terribly, and all you have to do is adjust... also, keep the volume on the player at about 5-20... any louder and it usually creates fuzz, so just turn up the other device you have it plugged into...
    hope i could help

  • Pixelation / Distortion when using "Save for Web..." versus "Export"

Hi. When I export from Illustrator using the Save for Web & devices option (I export the original at png24) the images are not as smooth as those produced by selecting File-Export. 2 images produced by both images are attached. The variation is most noticeable on the round corners.
Is there a way to export work at full quality using the Save for Web & Devices option?

    jkadobeil,
I have transparency ticked. One cannot specify matte if transparency is ticked.
I can in 10. It may be a bug or corrupted preferences. If the latter, you may try to Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option+Shift during startup or Move the folder with Illy closed.

  • Humming when using audio jacks

I purchased my (HP 110-023 Desktop) last August. When I hook it up to my receiver (3.5mm to RCA Cable) I am getting a noisy hum coming through my speakers. These are the steps that I have already tried:1) Cable (hooked up multilpe other items such as an ipod, etc.) with no noise coming through speakers until hooked back up to PC.2) Tried plugging PC into multiple different outlets (In case it is a ground problem) with no success.3) Run new ground wire from back of receiver with no success.4) used new audio cable with no success.5) In the last month I have sent it to HP to get it repaired. They put in a new soundcard, etc. (SAME ANNOYING PROBLEM).I hope someone can help me.

  • When using Firefox certain videos play but the image is green and distorted.. help?

Firefox 3.6.8 and 3.5 (I downgraded to see if that would solve the issue)
    Windows 7
    Intel Core i5
    Flash Player: WIN 10,1,53,64
When using Firefox certain videos play but the image is green and distorted. The image turns into lines and sometimes it half of the screen of the video. Examples are streaming MLB.tv video and some vimeo videos. The odd thing is that it isn’t all Vimeo videos. Is this a flash issue?
The issue does not happen with Internet Explorer which leads me to believe this is an issue with Firefox. I downgraded to 3.5 and the issue still persists.

  • HTML signatures distorted inside the Signatures and Stationery window preview/edit field, but display fine when used

I created an HTML signature and imported it into Outlook 2010/2013 by placing the .htm file into my %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Signatures folder. The signature looks and works great, however the signature looks distorted / severely squished in width when attempting
to view the signature in the Signatures and Stationery window within Outlook. What would be causing this? Is this a common issue when using .htm signatures?
It isn't too big of an issue as the signatures do work as expected when in normal use, however some users would like to tweak theirs using Outlook's built in editor and are not currently able to.

In my experience at least, that's a normal behaviour. The editor isn't fully WYSIWYG so if you do anything complicated in there it won't always give an accurate representation of what will eventually be output when you insert it into a message. I've seen
the same thing with signatures copied from elsewhere, displaying fine in the email but not in the editor, so it's not restricted to imported .htm files.

  • Loud distorted noise when using STP Noise Reduction

    Another very strange STP glitch.
When using Noise Reduction, I set the noise print. Then open the Noise Reduction dialog (or HUD, I guess). The first time I play the mono audio file I'm editing, sound comes out of the left speaker at perhaps slightly reduced volume. Stop playback. Then hit the Play button again (still in the Noise Reduction dialog). Playback is now INCREDIBLY LOUD AND DISTORTED. So loud that it probably damaged my speakers (not to mention making me jump out of my chair). Thinking there was a problem with the file, I recorded some audio (again a single mono track). Same result. Deleted all the plists I could think that might be involved. No luck.
Next, I actually went to a different computer - my G5 2.0 GHz DP. Same result, so I am completely puzzled on this one. Any ideas.
Both machines were running STP v 2.02. The original problem was discovered on a MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz. Both have 4GB RAM and are running Mac OS X 10.5.1.

APPLE!!! FIX THIS!!!!!! IT IS PHYSICALLY DAMAGING TO THE USER. COULD EASILY BLOW SOMEONE'S HEARING.
I just went to play a preview of the file while adjusting the settings in reduce noise print WITH HEADPHONES ON! I was attempting to take out a very loud running generator in the background of an interview and nearly blew my hearing in my left ear. I threw the headphones across the room. Painful to say the least. My sound was only on the first notch and the result was louder than I can get my headphones to play with the volume all the way up.
JamesGray, if you file a lawsuit, let me know, no joke. This is a dangerous and irresponsible game Apple is playing with their professional user's hearing, and therefore their livelihood and quality of life.

iPod Touch Ver 4.3 - when using 3.5mm jack volume is low, why? And yes, the volume is all the way up.
Message was edited by: Vulcan Rider

try to set the 'volume limit' to 'off'.
You will found that in Settings -> Music --> Volume Limit.
Or there may be a number of reasons; like : the poor audio quality of the music you have loaded.
Use some good quality songs; then I think, it will be fine.

  • Bass distortion when plugging ipod into home stereo

My stereo system(including its speakers) and my ipod (with earphones and on my iMac)both play great. However, when I plug in my ipod to my stereo via the phono jack(no other jacks are free), some of the songs are distorted like my speakers can't handle the low bass. When I play the music directly from the CD on the stereo, it sounds great and there is no distortion.
I'm using the iPod connection kit and the volume is turned down on the iPod when I connect it to the stereo. Setting the iPod to a lower base setting on the equalizer in the iPod helps but it still isn't right.
Total frustration-I'd rather not try the output on any other jacks on my tuner because that would mean disabling a unit like my cassette deck (yes there are people who still own them).

As other posters stated, the phono jacks are designed for turntable cartridges. They are much more sensitive than the AUX inputs and have a non-linear frequency response to compensate for the non-linear response of the cartridges. Cartridges put out less signal for low frequencies so the phono pre-amp boosts bass -- which is why you notice the distortion more on bass.
Since you're out of inputs, you could add an external switch. Radio Shack sells a "2-Way Audio/Video Selector Switch (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049644&cp=&pg=1&searchSor t=TRUE&sr=1&retainProdsInSession=1&y=9&origkw=rcaswitch&kw=rcaswitch&x=14&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=search)" for $17. It also switches video signals -- which you don't need -- but you can just ignore those connectors. There may be a cheaper, audio only switch out there.
