Distortion with low frequency sounds

I'm using a X-Fi XtremeGamer soundcard in a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L MOBO running windows vista 32bit,? and Logitech X-540 speakers with monster cable RCA cables.
About a month ago I started noticing that low frequencies (Bass drum, explosions, bass guitar) in songs, video games, etc. were being distorted and muffled. It sounds like the sounds are coming out of a massi've amp in another room behind 3ft. of concrete.
At first I thought it was my speakers, so I replaced my old set with the brand new logitech speakers and brand new cables. No help
Then I uninstalled all my creative software and drivers, and took the card out. Switched on the integrated audio chipset on my MOBO from BIOS and downloaded the latest drivers for that. The sound quality improved slightly.
Next I uninstalled the drivers for the integrated chipset, turned off, popped the sound card back in, turned off the integrated chip,? installed the drivers from the CD, then updated with the latest? SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_5_0006 driver. Back to the original problem.
Next I checked to make sure the sound files themselves weren't corrupted, I put the same files on another computer with the same MOBO, and they sounded fine through the integrated chipset.
So I'm out of ideas... has anyone heard of a problem like this before? It seems to me I hae a defecti've sound card, but the fact I have similar problems with the integrated chipset worries me...

I have exactly the same problem - especially with the sound track in games like Far Cry2, Fear2 etc - low frequecy sound heavily distorted, just as you describe. Same result with all settings tried. Low frequecy sound in movies is fine.
I have? a 2. speaker setup, and am wondering if something is simply not seperating frequecies correctly - trying to make the subwoofer handle? frequecies that should go to the normal speakers?

  • MacBook Pro 15" Hitachi HDD makes Low Frequency Sound!

I've noticed from some other boards that the Hitachi HDD drive on 15 inch MacBook pro's, create some sort of low frequency noise that can be soothing to some, and very annoying to others.
I have noticed this sound comming from my Mac, and frankly, it hurts my brain.
I want to contact Apple store to see if they can fix the problem, but really, I wondered if there is any diagnostic or repair i can do at home to fix it.
Hopefully someone could answer my Question,
    Thank you in Advance,
    Daniel.

If this is just a normal noise that the drive makes, There may not be much to be done other than to replace it with a different brand of drive. If you think the noise might be abnormal, you could check out the overall health of the drive with S.M.A.R.T. Utility:

  • Sound Distortion problems w/ lower frequency tones/instuments

I've been ending up with a lot of distortion in tracks when I bounce them over to Itunes. Primarily w/ lower frequency notes on bass and various pads - it's frustrating to have to adjust all the levels to lose the distortion. I obviously don't want to have to avoid using lower tones in tracks.
Am I stuck just filtering and adjusting eq's or is their an easier option?
    Thanks in advance all.

What the best way is to avoid distortion w/ lower frequencies?
The likely source of your distortion is too hot of an output level. You might try using compression or limiting to keep those low-frequency levels under control. Other than that, you just have to adjust individual track levels so that you get a good overall level without distortion. EQ can also help if a certain frequency range is too hot compared to everything else.

  • Using iPod with high frequencies

Hi there - I'm having treatment for tinnitus (high-pitched sound in the ear). There is a treatment where you listen to music interlaced with high frequency sounds which is supposed to stimulate the brain & the cilia inside the ear. They have CDs available but recommend not to use iPod. My question is, if you transferred the CDs using Apple Lossless would the high frequencies come through? Bear in mind some of these frequencies are up to around 14 KHz and there are all sorts of subtleties in the signal. One question is transferring it to the PC using Apple Lossless, the other question is playing it back on the 5G iPod. I'm also thinking of getting a Nano just for this - would it play it back OK? Thanks!
    MacBook Pro 15", 60 GB 5G iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.4)
    14 iBook, 768 RAM, 60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

This is only my personal opinion, which can be wrong.
First, human can only listen to 20KHz most, thats why the CD's frequency response only cover in the range of 20-20KHz.
For iPod - the apple mentioned the following
iPod is designed to provide the best-quality sound. iPod has a powerful 60 mW amplifier so it can deliver audio as loud as you want. It also has a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, which means you can hear distortion-free music at the lowest or highest pitches. Even the iPod headphones are designed to give you the best-quality sound. The earbud-style headphones rely on Neodymium transducers, a rare earth magnet that significantly enhances frequency response and overall sound quality. Most other headphones use aluminum, cobalt, or ceramic drivers; at the same size, the Neodymium driver is five times as powerful. Because the strength of the driver increases the accuracy of the sound, the iPod headphones provide a high-energy listening experience while minimizing distortion.
To ensure CD-quality sound, be sure to use a compression setting of 160 kbit/s (the default setting in iTunes) or higher when you "rip" tracks from your CD into MP3 format, or 128 kbit/s in MP4 format (AAC).
Therefore, if you rip the music from a CD, it does not matter whether it is MP3, AAC or Apple Lossless, it will no reduce the frequency response, however, there is noticeable difference of sound quality from different format, of course with Apple Lossless format being the best, but much bigger size.

  • Low frequency pulse duration measurement

We have low frequncy pulse duration measurement to be done . We have tried with pulse measurement but it shows error for the frequency bellow 1.5 Hz. We have input signal of frequency varie from 0.5hz to 3 hz .Please suggest us is there any other method that can be used for mesureing the pulse width with low frequency mentioned above .If this can be done using tick count , please send us the example .
    Regards,

    Hello Sharanu,
I'm not sure you will be able to measure a frequency below 1.5 Hz in
the traditional way.  However, I would like to ask you some more
    questions about your system.
    1) What hardware are you using?
    2) What is the error you are receiving (please include the exact error text)?

  • Sound clicking and distortion with X

Anyone else having sound clicking and distortion with their X-Fi Card? Its rare in most games, but I have a couple games where its very common Eve-Online for example. I have a X-Fi Fatalty FPS.

Using Asio4All will introduce a higher latency than using Creative X-Fi ASIO / Bit-Matched -mode, so the later is recommended. If you get distortion make sure that your volume is not turned up to max, it should be around 0db in the mixer, which corresponds to about 80%. If you get cracks/pops then it's due to the bad performance of the ASIO drivers of the X-Fi. The latest beta also says to remove cracks/pops and some distortion problems in audio creation mode, maybe try them.
Again, here is a list of real latencies as measured on my own system, using the latest stable driver (not the beta one):
    Rate = sample-rate
Comp = latency compensation in ms (by how much the real latency differs from what the application/driver reports
Low = lowest no of buffers (in samples) that I was able to use
Real = real measured latency (in contrast to what the application/drivers reports)

  • A slice of low frequencies and A strangled sound

    Good afternoon!
My Envy dv6-7377er has a problem with the quality of the sound.
When I connect the laptop to the amp, I notice a slice of low frequencies and A strangled sound.
When I connect my old computer or CD is no such problem.
No "Beats" equalizers do not eliminate the problem.
What should I do to get good sound?
Sorry for modest vocabulary and bad grammatik, I'm from Russia, and can not clearly explain the problem.
But I beleve, you uderstand me.

    Hello Oleg_P.
You should try removing the driver and allowing the operating system to reinstall it.  Try the following.
    Navigate to your Device Manager.
Expand the "Sound, video, and game controllers" section.
Right click on your sound card and select "Uninstall."
Reboot the computer and allow Windows to complete the reinstallation.
    Post the result.
    Have a great day!
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"

  • Is it possible to detect low frequency signals with a high sampling rate?

    Hello everyone,
I'm having an issue detecting low frequency signals with a high sampling rate.  Shouldn't I be able to detect the frequencies as long as the sampling rate is at least 2 times the highest frequency I will measure?  The frequency range I am measuring is 5-25 Hz, and I use Extract Single Tone.vi to measure the frequency.  The sampling setting I am using is 2 samples at 10 kHz.  Is there a method I can use to make this work?
    Attached is the vi.
    Attachments:
    frequencytest.vi ‏21 KB

You are sampling at 10Ks/S, but only taking two samples. What do you expect to see? If your signals are binary (On or Off) you would only see either an on or an off, or if the rise/fall time was fast and you were Extremely lucky, one of each. If you want to see a waveform you have to sample for at least the period of a waveform. So you should take samples for at least 0.2 seconds to capture an entire waveform at 5Hz, ideally longer.   Think of looking at a tide change at a dock. If you want to see the entire tide change you will probably have to measure repeatedly over 24 hours, not just run out on the dock, measure the height twice and leave. That wouldn't tell you anything other than at that precise moment the tide height was X, but not that it was at high tide, low tide, in between, etc.
I type too slowly, I see that a more technical answer has been given, so mine will be the philosophical one!

  • IPhone 6 Plus speaker sounds distorted with popping sound when phone rings or alerts play.

My iPhone 6 Plus is less than a 2 weeks old but since day one its speaker sounds distorted.   The ringer or alerts or even the new email alert have a popping or clangy sound to them.  Is this a software issue or hardware?  My phone is uptodate and Ive tried hard reboots to try to alleviate the problem but it didn't fix the problem.  Should I try to restore it?  Also, If I take it in to my local Apple store and they replace it, will my new ZAGG screen protector just be a wasted $20???

    Hi _3ntr0py,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with your new iPhone 6 Plus. If you continue to have sound or speaker distortion with your iPhone, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • High frequency sound with K8T Neo-FIS2R

    Hello!
I have the MSI k8t neo-fis2r mainboard with bios v 1.6 and sometimes it makes a horrible high frequency sound and I cant figure out why.
    My system are:
    amd 64 3000 cpu and
    Corsair Value S PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB Unbuffered, Non-parity, 64Megx64, CL2.5
My other components does not cause the sound (that I have found out by testing).
I wonder if the ram causes the sound? Can you please help me. The sound is so bad that I cant use my computer. It only appers during heavy system load, and not in windows. It has nothing to do with my video card (because I have tried with several different cards). My bios settings are default values + cool and quit enabled. I have the core center installed so the progam controls the cpu fan.
I really hope someone can help me.

The sound does not come from the speaker and I dont think it comes fom the cpu fan either. I think it comes from the motherboard, ram or the cpu. When I dont use my mouse it is quit but when I clik it makes this sound. Can it be that I have to set all values in bios for ram etc. manually instead of automatic?
When it comes to other electrical sources I have a TV standing 0.5 meter from the computer. Could thins cause the problem? I did not have the problem with my old motherboard which was a MSI K7T Turbo2.
The sound usually appers when I am benchamarking my system. For example 3dmark 2004. Because of this I thougt there was a problem wiht my vga card but after a changed to a new one...the situation was just the same.

  • How do I get the line-in to record low frequencies?

The iPhone with GarageBand is potentially one of the most powerful tools for mobile recording ever.  Unfortunately there are several tragic yet avoidable drawbacks that reduce it to nothing more than a mere toy.  1. You can't use the camera usb adapter to bring in loss-less digital stereo input.  2. Even if you could, you can't split the stereo into 2 seperate mono tracks.  And to take the cake...  3. You can't do much recording with the 3.5 jack's line-in because you get ABSOLUTELY NO LOWS!  This is due to the iPhones roll-off low frequency limiter filter, which i'm told since ios6 can possibly be disabled, though it's not in the Settings and i have yet to find an app that will do it in the background while running Garageband.  Sure, the Garageband app could do that, but then it would be a powerful incalculably valuable tool in the hands of everyone.  No lows means no drums, no bass, and vocals that sound like...well...like they were recorded via telephone.  Yes, it's painfully clear you recorded that demo on a phone, because when you play it back in your home or car it sounds like your listening to someone play it for you on the other end of a phone call.  There is no adjustment to compensate for the absence of low frequencies.  SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME I AM WRONG and that you have a work-around or know of something I've missed.  How do you get lows into Garageband???

Thanks for the info.  I am not wanting flat stereo nor digital input from the 3.5.  Only wanting flat mono.  But before I go the apogee route (which is a $150-200 solution, not to mention a solution that will add more devices to the connection and thus more opportunities for noise), I will probably just resort to purchasing an ipad (can get a mini for $299) .  My mixer has usb out, and I can go straight into the ipad digitally with the usb camera kit, albeit I still can't split 1 stereo channel into 2 mono channels.  But I digress:  my entire purpose for this post is that i would like to stay as mobile as possible by using the iphone, but with all the darn limitations imposed by no one other than Apple, what could be an easy way to record has been nullified.  What's frustrating is that all the components are there and I have them, all the hardware is more than capable; but in both cases (the 3.5 mono or the usb stereo) there is a software feature (or lack thereof) blocking me.
Again if anyone knows of an app that will disable the software low-cut, please respond...

  • I do a radio show, when I pre-record i get a very low end hiss, almost sounds like gain is too high, but its not. If Im live to the station its fine. It only happens when I record. Is there a way to set audition NOT to record that low end sound?

I use an Allen & Heath broadcast board. When I record to my computer for later broadcast there is a low end hiss/hum barely noticeable when im speaking BUT very prominent when there is a quiet moment.
Sounds like gain may be tooo high, BUT its not.  When I do a LIVE broadcast using same equipment all is fine!
    Thoughts

    Well, several thoughts here...
First, what are you using to get from the A&H mixer into your computer and is it in the chain when you broadcast live?  I ask because a lot of built in sound cards are pretty noisy and that could be the source of the problem, fixable with even a very cheap external USB interface
Second, if the hiss actually starts at the mic/mixer, I know the A&H XB series has a high pass filter on every mic channel.  Have you engaged that?
That said, it's pretty rare for hiss to be such a low frequency that the high pass filter will kill it.  You may get on better with the Noise Reduction feature in Audition, applied after the recording.
Anyhow, to repeat how I started, what's your signal chain when recording and how does it differ from when you go live?

    if (vol> reactToBeat) {
    scaleX = scaleY = scaleOnBeat;
    else {
    scaleX = scaleY = 1;
    I am thinking that
    private var
    reactToBeat:Number = 30;is completely dependant on song.mp3.
If the song was processed at a different volume level, then you may
need to lower the value. (e.g. 30 would be lowered to 19)
I ultimately want to have this work with any song, because I
will be making a playlist and have song.mp3 replaced with the var.
To start, however, I would at least like to get this spectrum
to only respond to low frequencies.
I think for start, I would need to change:
    SoundMixer.computeSpectrum(ba,
    true, 0);to
    SoundMixer.computeSpectrum(ba,
false, 0);so that it reads it as a frenquency spectrum
rather than a complete wav file (according to the as3 ref doc)
With that, the first 256 values should be low freqs and 257
to 512 would be high freqs.
How can I utilize that to only scaleOnBeat to the low
    frequencies?
Also, I didn't know if it was best to use a select case for a
    certain range of values.
    Thanks

After thinking about it a little bit, if the computeSpectrum
was set to false, that would give me the left channel of 0-256, but
so would the class of "leftpeak"...so is there a way to use that?
Also, vol is currently dependant on the 512 total values, so
perhaps setting computeSpectrum to false, and then changing all 512
references to 256 and all 256 values to 128. That would cut it down
to only work with the left channel...right?
I am also trying to get away from the fixed value of 30 for
reactOnBeat, because what if I want to change the volume?
Yes, I could always increase the vol by the difference
reactOnBeat is from 30, but isn't there a dB averager or some other
class that would tell me more information about the sound
    file?

  • Logic cuts low frequencies when recording audio?

I am using a Lexicon Lambda interface and a iMac running Logic Pro 9, when i try to rip vinyl from a single turntable or record a mix from my mixer logic cuts most of the low frequencies leaving a tinny sounding recording, i have tried recording using the same interface with a Acer laptop running both Cubase and Soundforge and all is fine, so it must be something in Logic's settings, probably something simple that i have missed most likely, anyone know what to do to stop this?

Sounds as though you are hearing the effect of the RIAA EQ curve (bass cut and treble boost) applied at the cutting stage to keep the cutter head excursion within manageable bounds. If you connect a deck directly to your computer, this is to be expected. However, a DJ mixture should correct for the EQ. Does it have more than one output? If so, see if changing output affects the sound. If not, does your interface have a 'phono' input? If so, this should provide the required compensation. Failing that, does anyone have a Linear Phase EQ preset to deal with the RIAA curve?
