Distressed Type in Illustrator

Hi guys, I'm pretty new to Illustrator and I'm having problems creating distressed type in Illustrator CS6. I cam across a tutorial that showed me how to do it with the "glass" effect but I did not really like the result. I also came across a video on the layers magazine site (http://layersmagazine.com/distressedtype.html) which does exactly what I want but I can't seem to follow it correctly (maybe because they refer to an older CS version). Any help on the steps involved would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
MK

I'll try -
Basically from the tutorial I see that you take a grunge background, create some black text, use a black and white live trace on the image so it turns monochrome, click expand so it turns into objects and then delete the white shapes. Then you put the background over the text, send it to the back with arrange > send to back and then select everything and use "minus back". The black text then has the background texture on the actual text (eg scratches in but not around it) as if the shape has become part of the text and it can be placed against any background colour/texture.

  • Grey Boxes when rolling over type in Illustrator CS5.5

    This is driving me insane. I have to have a solution as this is a work computer and I'm a designer who has deadlines to meet.
    Whenever I roll over, select, move or try to edit some type elements in Illustrator, the preview of the type flicks into grey boxes (see below).
    There's no cursor and I can't see what I'm typing nor can I be precise with the text placement.
    What is the problem and how do I fix it?

    By dock do you mean the Swatches panel? Have you tried the Delete Unused Panel Items action from the Action panel. They can also be in Symbols or Brushes but if you run the action it will delete them in order so that the color swatches are deleted last and if they were in a Symbol, Graphic Stlye or Brush with the original gone they should delete. Also make sure that everything is visible and unlocked.

  • White lines around type in illustrator artwork

    I keep getting a white outlined box around type in my Illustrator artwork. I’ve run into this before (going back to CS6) and haven’t been able to solve this problem. It’s a simple logo design with a gradient circle with an S on top. Here are the specs to avoid the most obvious questions.
    Text is converted to curves.
    Text and circle gradient are on different layers.
    Colors are CMYK. Not spot.
    Looks fine in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign but shows up when exported or printed to Acrobat.
    Also shows up in MSWord 2010 and 2013.
    Exporting artwork to EPS, BMP, EMF, TIF, JPG, all produce the same result.
    Flattening the artwork doesn’t fix the issue.
    Having this issue with both Illustrator CS6 and CC.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    As soon as you flatten do you see the problem in Illustrator, or after you make a .pdf?
    Is that a soft drop shadow on the S, what happens if you temporarily remove the shadow?
    What setting do you have for document setup >>  transparency? Do you have any blending modes assigned?
    So you have both CS6 & CC, did this happen before the cash cow was installed?  I would say so turn off smoothing in Acrobat as in my initial screenshot, but you say that this happens even in other non pdf formats. Try resetting your preferences, this looks like a tranparency flattening issue.

  • TYPE IN ILLUSTRATOR CS4

    Can anybody help please.
    I have looked at videos and read about many of the new feature in Illustrator CS4 but I can't find out if working with type has changed in any way.
    Does anybody know where I can get any info.
    Thanks,
    Ieuan Rees

    I don't believe there have been any functional changes. I think merely improvements to things like type on a path took place - things that you'll notice when setting type, but won't alter a work flow in anyway.

  • Character Panel isn't updated when selecting different type objects - Illustrator CC 2014.1.0 (october release)

    If I have a Type Object selected that is, for example,
    set to Helvetica, Bold 32pt size and 40pt leading,
    when I select a different Type Object with entirely
    different settings, the Character Panel does not refresh
    to reflect the currently selected object.
    This seems to happen more often than not - maybe 80% of the time.
    My current work around is to change a value in the panel, then quickly change it back.
    Current setup is a mac pro
    OS X 10.9.5
    Illustrator CC 2014.1.0 (october release)

    Hi Marshal,
    Try to reset the preferences to default:
    Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Illustrator. Your current settings are deleted.
    Remove or rename the AIPrefs file (Windows) or Adobe Illustrator Prefs file (Mac OS). New preferences files are created the next time you start Illustrator.note: It is safe to remove the entire Adobe Illustrator Settings folder. This folder contains various preferences that can be regenerated.
    Hope this helps.

    Hello,
    I am getting the same error and I found some articles on Oracle Metalink (Note 360287.1) regarding the filesystemio_options parameter and the mount option cio. Basically it looks as if AIX will not allow another program e.g. cp to access the oracle datafile whilst oracle is accessing it unless you have set the cio option at the filesystem level.
    I haven't tried this yet as I need to get some downtime but I think this is what is causing the problem.
    Be careful if you don't have the Oracle datafiles in seperate filesystems because there is a problem with cio and running binaries. (check the man pages for the cio mount option)
    Hope this helps you.

  • Setting type in Illustrator

    I'm probably not using the best application for what I am trying to do, but my limited knowledge is in Illustratot.
    I am trying to set a menu for a local pizza shop.  For eample:
    Cheese.........7.95....9.95
    Pepperoni.....8.95....10.75
    and so on.  I would like to just type this and hit a button that would make all lines the same width.
    When I open the Paragraph window and select "justify all lines"  it doesn't accomplish this.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you.

  • Transparent type in Illustrator CS4

    Hello all,
    I have an oval logo. The oval is filled with white. I want the point-type object over the logo to knock its letters thru the oval logo to transparency. How?
    Mike in Alexandria, VA

    Mike,
    Presuming the type is black, you may select both Type and oval and in the Transparency palette/panel flyout tick Make Opacity Mask, unticking Clip and Invert Mask if ticked.
    There may be newer ways in newer versions.
    Some of us are moving about, it seems.

  • How do I apply perspective to type in Illustrator CS6?

    I cut off the type from the outside of the box.

    I have used this technique on type and when I expand the appearance, a lot of lines appear (it is no longer smooth). I need this to look good on screen and for print. Any suggestions on avoiding or fixing this problem?

  • 2d or 3d program for this illustration type?

    I'm an illustrator who often works in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Usually my projects can be solved using these 2D programs (manually drawing on my desk, scanning and then colouring final image in photoshop) but lately I have been questioning whether I should be deploying a 3d solution into my workflow instead.
    What is a good versatile 3d program that would be recommended to model the type of image attached to this post (see note below)? (for geological diagrams). I don't have much time to learn a complex major 3d program such as 3D studio max but I am looking for a quick-to-deploy 3d solution that can be learned in a reasonable amount of time for this type of illustration. Any suggestions?
    It would appear from this referenced image (see note below for image) it is simply a 2D illustration (has a nice character to it). If I decide to stick with a 2D program could someone recommend one suitable? I've been using Photoshop but perhaps I should switch to Painter (I think thats a Corel product?) or something else. I will need some nice texture to paint with. Is Painter better for fine art rather than technical images?
    Any suggestions?
    PS: Image attachment option is not available and so the image is at:

    Thank you,

    Hi... I've some experience of 3D apps (Yes, 3DStudioMax and an open source one: Blender.... and years ago a 'light-weight' 3D app I can't rmember the name of just now, it'll come to me). I don't think I'd class any 3D app as 'quick to deploy' as an 'occasional' user. If you're going to use it day-in day-out then sure it'll end up 'quick to deploy'. I think you've made this assessment though.
    I've never used Painter so I'm not qualified to comment specifically on how it differs. I would say that I think you'd need to know specifically what it would do.. and I suspect it's a bit like airbrush verses paintbrush... or dare I say: Quark versus InDesign... they essentially do the same thing, they're not 'better' just different... though of course you'll get loads of people will tell you airbrush is better than paintbrush or vice-versa and get pretty evangalistic about their particular experience.. quite often not really very helpful in the end, best will and all that. I use both, regularly, have my preference but on balance... there's really nothing 'killer' I'd say one has over the other. I suspect it's the same for Coral Painter. There is a magazine in newagents for Coral Painter, might give you a feel if you look through it, I have and my feel was as I've just said... nothing 'killer' I'd change for.
    If your experience investment is in PhotoShop and Illustrator then consider whether the 'cost' of going back to basics in something else is the thing to do... only you know the answer to that.... you say 'often works'... suggesting you may not have committed considerably yet but perhaps you have?
    I suggest researching what others are doing... there are resources on the web with awesome work... both in PhotoShop and Painter... it'll show you what's possible... the surge in material on show opened my eyes to PhotoShops possibilities, an application I thought at the time I knew pretty well. Might help you develop a 'feel' for which way to go.
    PhotoShop CS5 has some interesting new '3D' features now which I've not had chance to play with... I don't know if you've got CS5? If not, I'd see if I could sweet talk someone who has it into letting you have a proper look-see.
    This is just my viewpoint given in the hope it'll help you out... though... I'm not sure it does. Difficult decision. Best of luck with it.

  • CC 2014, Illustrator, type with Drop Shadows what's different about them?

    I just tried to give a line of type a drop shadow, using Creative Cloud Illustrator CC 2014.  When I first apply the drop shadow a blur shows up and the only what I can give it a shape is and by going to O inches blur.  What on earth is going on...do I have a bad copy of Illustrator?
    I'm using Illustrator on a PC running Windows 7 Professional, has an Haswell i5 processor and 16 GB of memory. I'm using the 64 bit version of CC 2014
    When I've gone to Help it won't accept drop shadow and type for illustrator at all.
    Thank you very much, in advance. Any help would really be appreciated appreciated.

    This is what I get: Mode: Normal; Opacity: 75%; X Offset: 0.1 in; Y offset: 0.1 in; Blur: 0.1in Color: Black

  • How do I get rid of jagged, pixelated halo around type in Dreamweaver?

    Dear Dreamweaver Forum,
    I am studying the essential series of video tutorials on Dreamweaver CS3 via Lynda.com.
    I am also currently, slowly but surely, putting together a website to function as a resume, cover letter and portfolio all in one.
    I am currently in the middle of creating headings and images that will function as rollover buttons.
    I currently have a problem with a jagged or pixilated halo appearing around type I'm creating in Illustrator CS3 and placing into Dreamweaver CS3.
    The process I’m using so far is the following:
    In Dreamweaver CS3, I’m using div tags. I will place a div tag on a page. I will then move it to the desired location on the page and size it to my needs.
    I then take .gif file of type I created in Illustrator CS3 and drag it from the files panel and to the web page I’m working on. When I do this, I notice a halo around the type (please see inserted image below).
    How do I get rid of this jagged or pixilated halo?
    I created the type in Illustrator CS3 and then go File > Save for Web and Devices. In the 4-up dialog box that appears, I then save the type as a .gif file.
    Please see images below:
    Thanks for your help!

    How do I get rid of this jagged or pixilated halo?
    Don't use transparency! GIF and 8bit PNG only allow one transparent color, resulting in frizzled edges with antialiased content. If you know the type goes on a black background, save it with a black background....

  • How to find out the font type?

    Is it possible to find out the type of the used fonts(like Open type (or) true type) in illustrator cs3 file through programmatically. Kindly share with me the possibilities and solution.
    Thanks...

    You can't consistently, but a lot of files have identifying characteristics in the first few bytes that make it easier.
    There are utilities to do this, but I could have sworn that someone wrote a Java library to do it as well. As always, I suggest that you poke around http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/
    Or do a Google if Jakarta doesn't pan out.

  • Batch insert filename in textpath script crashes Illustrator

    Hi everyone!
    First off: I am not a programmer. Just playing around with code and trying to get it to work for a specific task:
    Here is a script made for the purpose of inserting a text with the file name in over 600 pdf files. This is suppose to work on all files in a selected folder.
    The problem: Illustrator crashes.
    A first test code worked but after a few edited files Illustrator crashed, so I tried to introduce a delay after each save in order to slow down the batch process.
    $.setTimeout(function () {sourceDoc.close(SaveOptions.SAVECHANGES)}, 1000);
    Unfortunately I did not save the working (almost working ) first test code.
    No idea what to do next. The code works if I delete this line: sourceDoc.close(SaveOptions.SAVECHANGES);
    Here is the complete script:
    var destFolder, sourceFolder, files, fileType, sourceDoc, layers, writeText, finLabel;
    // Select the source folder.
    sourceFolder = Folder.selectDialog( 'Select the folder with Illustrator files you want to convert to PNG', '~' );
    // If a valid folder is selected
    if ( sourceFolder != null )
    files = new Array();
    fileType = prompt( 'Select type of Illustrator files to you want to process. Eg: *.ai', '*.pdf' );
    // Get all files matching the pattern
    files = sourceFolder.getFiles( fileType );
    if ( files.length > 0 )
    for ( i = 0; i < files.length; i++ )
        sourceDoc = app.open(files[i]); // returns the document object
        layers = unlock();
        writeText = getFilename();
        finLabel = remText();
        sourceDoc.close(SaveOptions.SAVECHANGES);   //if save command line is deleted the code works   WTF???
        $.setTimeout(function () {sourceDoc.close(SaveOptions.SAVECHANGES)}, 1000); // still crashes using delay ...
    //alert( 'Files are saved as PNG in ' + destFolder );
    else
    alert( 'No matching files found' );
    function unlock()
       //get the total number of layers in the active document
    doc = app.activeDocument;
    var totalLayers = doc.layers.length;
    //looping on layers to create one artboard per layer
    for ( var i = 0 ; i < totalLayers ; i++){
        var currentLayer = doc.layers[i];
        //We don't want to deal with hidden layers
        if(currentLayer.visible == false) continue;
        //Unlock the layer if needed
        currentLayer.locked = false;
    function getFilename()
    // Write text
    var pointTextRef = app.activeDocument.textFrames.add();
    pointTextRef.contents = app.activeDocument.name + "\n" + "YBS";
    pointTextRef.top = 0;
    pointTextRef.left = 0;
    app.activeDocument.textFrames[0].textRange.characterAttributes.textFont=app.textFonts[31];
    function remText()
    // This works for search and replace :))))))
        var active_doc = app.activeDocument;
        var search_string = /_Template.pdf/gi; // g for global search, remove i to make a case sensitive search
        var replace_string = '';
        var text_frames = active_doc.textFrames;
        if (text_frames.length > 0)
            for (var i = 0 ; i < text_frames.length; i++)
                  var this_text_frame = text_frames[i];
                   var new_string = this_text_frame.contents.replace(search_string, replace_string);
                   if (new_string != this_text_frame.contents)
                            this_text_frame.contents = new_string;
    Any ideas about what makes Illustrator crash?
    Note: The application crashes after opening the first file.
    Thanks for helping out!

    Thanks a lot Carlos!
    After deleting line 23:
    $.setTimeout(function () {sourceDoc.close(SaveOptions.SAVECHANGES)}, 1000);
    the code worked on 499 files in one batch
    Also Turns out Illustrator kept crashing because of a corrupted pdf file.
