Distribute Customer Updates in SCCM 2012 (CU's) using a Task Sequence

I want to utilize a Task Sequence to Distribute Customer Updates to SCCM 2012 Clients.  I currently have 2 collections for pre-CU 4 clients, one for 32 Bit Clients (x86) , one for 64 Bit Clients (x64).  I have a package pertinent to each collection
which I use to distribute the updates.
However, instead of segregating them by collection, I would like to have one big collection, and have the Task Sequence sort out which package should load on which collection.
I've tried using the RUN COMMAND LINE, and INSTALL PACKAGE options to no avail.  Is there a way to utilize a Task Sequence for this undertaking, or should I just continue the way I'm currently doing it.
Thanks ,
Dan

You can set Collection Variables for the two collections, then add running condition in the Task Sequence Steps for corresponding collections.

We have SCCM 2012 R2 installed and configured for SUP.and i have synchonice the SUP with WSUS server in the same which is there in the same machine.
Now i can able to deploy the software update from SCCM 2012 R2 without any erro to the windows 7clients, but client side when i check there is no update installed in the clients , but seems there is no error in the client logs

    Hi,
I'd start with running a "Software Updates Scan Cycle" from the configuration manager control panel applet and check the log file Windowsupdate.log, WUAhandler.log.

  • List of recommended hotfixes/updates for SCCM 2012 R2 agents?

    Hopefully I ask this correctly.
Is there a list of recommended hotfixes or updates for SCCM 2012 R2 agents?  Things like .Net or WMI updates.
I am seeing the occasional agents lose connectivity, and I want to make sure I have a complete or recommended list of non-SCCM hotfixes before I move forward.
    Thanks!
    Andy

To my knowledge there aren't really any kind of recommended hotfixes to apply before a client installation, except for the prerequisites (that the client installs by itself). But as a best practice, always make sure that a client is up to date when it comes
    to patches.

  • Query about expired updates in SCCM 2012

    Hi,
We have requirement to include Feature pack updates in SCCM 2012.
For testing purpose, We have modified SUP settings in CAS to include feature packs and run the synchornization. so All feature packs update are synchornized and available(The icon with the green arrow) in SCCM 2012. Since this is for testing, we  roll
back the changes in SUP (unchecked Feature packs) and after we run synchornication, Feature pack updates are showing as Expired in SCCM console.
I just want to know if we include Feature packs in SUP and run synshornization again, Will that expired feature pack updates show as normal updates(Green icon) in sccm console?

i have not testes this behavior but i think,it should work as you expected ,the expired feature pack updates will show as normal after you enable and sync is done as the metadata will be overwritten.

  • Deploying the SCCM 2012 Client to WES 7 devices that are locked down with the FBWF using 2007 task sequence via WEDM.

I'm wondering how people are migrating their embedded devices that are using the FBWF. I've done some googling and it seems like most people are just re-imaging the devices and after migrating a single device i see why. Its not a pretty process. This will
be a long description but ultimately my question stems more from trying to find a better way to execute the device migration from 2007 to 2012.
Some back ground on my situation might be in order here. I'm in the process of wrapping up our 2007 to 2012 migration. We have a 2007 infrastructure that was a central server with 2 primaries and 286 secondary site servers. I've consolidated that to a single
2012 primary site server that hosts all the main roles. There are 2 more servers in the data centers both operating solely as push distribution points I'll refer to them as 2012 01 02 and 03. I'm over half way through the migration and so far haven't needed
to offload any site roles. There are almost 10,000 clients now reporting to the 2012 site server and almost a 100 field servers pulling content from 2012 02 as their source dp as pull dp is the only way forward for this many devices. I've read the horror stories
of trying spin up 200 plus push dps. We are running PKI. I'm at the point now where i need to start migrating the Windows Embedded Seven Standard clients that have the 2007 sccm client on them with WEDM for write filter handling.
What i'm wondering is if anyone has any pointers for me regarding migrating the WES 7 devices. My plan that i've come up with is to somehow script the process using a 2007 WEDM Task Sequence to try and migrate them over to 2012. Things are complicated as
I need to somehow script the install, the policy checkin, hardware inventory, software inventory, and validate the SCEP client installs before I reboot the device one last time to enable the FBWF. How I handled the SCCM 2007 client install on these devices
when they were provisioned was to just create a batch file that would sleep for ten minutes then check to see if the inventoryagent.log file had been created yet. I realize now that is inefficient as i can kick off the inventory using a WMI method once the
client has installed. Also I need to make sure the machine gets its first policy as that is how it creates the communication using PKI through that first policy transfer and that also finalizes the client install. The biggest piece i'm uncertain about in this
    regard is the SCEP client.
I had to change the SCEP client install from yes to no in the default client settings as we have some Mcaffee servers that can't have the SCEP client on them. I have incremental updates enabled on the collection that has the policy that installs the SCEP
client but this will take an unknown amount of time unless i force the environment to update as the device starts in 2012 install, or if I could kick off the SCEP isntall... IDK. I'm also wondering if i should keep the device in the migration process until
i validate it has its proper scep policy applied which I believe can be validated by a registry key somewhere.
Once the 2012 client gets installed will that cause it to lose its place within the 2007 Task Sequence? Considering its going to take a minimum of 2 reboots I'd normally use the task sequence to handle its progression through the process.
I'm also considering trying to use an Orchestrator runbook, as that would be a good way to keep track of the migration process as each device migrates. Especially since this might take several seperate scripts.
I'm going to take a stab at scripting the migration process, but if anyone has any pointers that might make this a less complicated I'd really appreciate it as I've got about 3000 of these devices that need to be migrated over. The other things i've learned
the hard way is any time you have something this complicated over the course of 3000 devices you will run into unknowns and the failure rate increases. I'm in the precarious position of having to not only build this process out but in some situations have
it complete in the shortest amount of time possible as we have sites running 24x7. I know the end users behavior all to well and they will just keep hitting the power button sometimes even though their not supposed to so they can get their device functional
again. In those situations i'd end up, if i'm lucky with a device that no longer has a healthy SCCM client in either environment and the write filter disabled.
So like i said any pointers anyone could throw my way i'd really appreciate. I manually went through the migration process on a single device for proof of concept and ended up with almost 2 pages of pseudo code for my migration script/scripts.
    Thanks,
    -K.R.

    Hi,
In R2 there are some new variables you can use to solve this,
    http://ccmexec.com/2014/12/smstsmplistrequesttimeout-value-in-milliseconds/
In Sp1 though adding a step to sleep for 2-5 minuter after reboot and before the application install step is a common workaround.. a powershell command with "Start-Sleep
    -s 120" should do it.

  • Howto trigger an update of SCEP at the end of the task sequence?

    Hi,
Howto trigger an update of SCEP at the end of the task sequence?
    Please advise.
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

Do you know if the command is running in WinPE mode or full-OS mode? You might try wrapping the command into a .bat or .cmd file and then running that through the task sequence.
Edit - I don't know how you're doing your task sequence initializing (e.g. unknown computers, OSD imaging collections, etc), but do you have a Client Policy (not Endpoint Protection Policy) set to allow SCEP to be managed?  And if so, how are your imaged
PC's getting into the collection to be managed.  Same for SCEP updates.
What I wonder is if your PC's know they have updates deployed to them.  That command line, if I remember right, will search for your internal update server, aka WSUS/SCCM for updates.  If the device does not have SCEP updates deployed to it, that
command will do nothing.  If you add -MMPC to the end of it the device will download from Microsoft.
There's a setting client setting for Endpoint protection called Disable Alternate Sources for the Initial Update.  What is that set to?  Sorry, I know I just threw a bunch of information at you and asked a lot of questions.

  • Windows 8.1 Custom Tiles - Deploying SCCM 2012 R2

    Confused.
In Hyper V, I created a Windows 8.1 Enterprise image while in sysprep audit mode.
I configured the tiles exactly how I wanted them.
Captured the image and deployed.  When I login, the tiles are all set to default.
Found a Microsoft site that said I could copy the AppsFolderLayout.bin file from the default image and then copy it to the default directory.   Tried that manually and through a task sequence and it still shows the default screen.
I tried exporting the bin file through powershell and then importing through SCCM task sequence and same thing.
    http://stealthpuppy.com/customizing-the-windows-8-1-start-screen-dont-follow-microsofts-guidance/
What is the best way to accomplish this?
    Thanks
    Rick

Make sure you follow the steps exactly.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/deploymentguys/archive/2012/10/26/start-screen-customization-with-mdt.aspx
When the AppsFolderLayout.bin is copied to default profile, it will be copied to any new user profiles upon initializing first user logon. You could also manually copy the file to a user's profile to verify AppsFolderLayout.bin layout file.

  • MS SQL Server 2012 Updates via SCCM 2012 R2

I'm trying to determine if SCCM 2012 R2 can manage and deploy Hotfixes, Updates and Service packs for SQL Server 2012. Can someone please confirm that SCCM can manage this, how to download SQL Server Hotfixes, Updates and Service Packs into SCCM and where
I can find instructions on setting up my MS SQL Server computers to receive SQL updates from SCCM.
    Thanks.

ConfigMgr absolutely can deploy updates and service packs for SQL. You just need to choose the versions you want in Software Update Point Products and Classifications. It's no different than deploying any other Microsoft updates.
    http://www.gerryhampsoncm.blogspot.ie/2013/04/sccm-2012-sp1-step-by-step-guide-part.html
Is it a good idea? I don't think so. I think SQL updates should be part of a carefully planned (and tested) manual upgrade.

  • Update to SCCM 2012 R2

    Good afternoon everyone,
I have a quick question and would hope that you are able to answer for me.
I currently am the administrator SC ORch and SCSM, but not SCCM.
I am in the process of planning to update Orch and SCSM to 2012 R2 from SP1.
However, the administrator of SCCM 2012 has not updated the console to SP1 and does not seem keen on upgrading it to 2012 R2.
Looking through TechNet articles and the upgrade sequencing guide http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn521010.aspx, they advise that if you update one before the other, functionnality will be lost (through the connectors, or other cases). However,
there is no mention if you leave one component that is not updated.
My question is, if I upgrade SCORch and SCSM to 2012 R2, will I lose connection through the connectors to SCCM 2012?
I don't think I would, but I just wanted clarrification before I proceed with my testing in our dev environment.

The connector should still be in place after the upgrade and even more important should still function. See also:

  • Endpoint Protection clients no getting updates from SCCM 2012 in new Secondary Site

I recently stood up a secondary site behind a PCI firewall to manage PCI in-scope systems. All of my boundaries are properly configured and there are no overlaps. I am able to push packages to these clients and the clients are reporting as healthy however
I am not able to get updates to the SCEP clients. There is no internet access from these systems so I have to rely on updates from SCCM. From what I can see in the WindowsUpdate log it is only trying to go to Microsoft for the definitions. Here is the Log:

The log is from a Server 2012 R2 Client. The only thing I was able to find was this Article which did not resolve my issue. Anyone else encounter anything similar? Any help would be appreciated.

Every two hours is too aggressive for the ADR. Definitions are only released 2-3 times a day so every 8 hours is what most consider best practice. Is your WSUS sync occurring every two hours as well? If not, then the ADR wouldn't have anything new to pick
up anyway. It's best to set the WSUS sync for every 8 hours and then set the ADR to run after any successful WSUS sync.
So the EP definitions are caching but not installing? What does the WUAHandler.log show? One of my machines shows the following which indicates a successful installation from the ConfigMgr delivered update:
    1. Update (Missing): Definition Update for Microsoft Endpoint Protection - KB2461484 (Definition 1.173.933.0) (0a156122-d4f8-4215-9e63-8f0f1e32c9c6, 200)    WUAHandler    4/30/2014 6:49:33 AM    11080 (0x2B48)
Async installation of updates started.    WUAHandler    4/30/2014 6:49:34 AM    11080 (0x2B48)
    Update 1 (0a156122-d4f8-4215-9e63-8f0f1e32c9c6) finished installing (0x00000000), Reboot Required? No    WUAHandler    4/30/2014 6:50:23 AM    8664 (0x21D8)
    Async install completed.    WUAHandler    4/30/2014 6:50:23 AM    8664 (0x21D8)
Installation of updates completed.    WUAHandler    4/30/2014 6:50:23 AM    11032 (0x2B18)
It sounds like if you set "Check for Endpoint Protection definitions at a specific interval" to 0 then it would prevent the WindowsUpdate.log activity you're seeing when the EP client tries to reach out for updates.

  • Reduce huge update in sccm 2012 r2

I have installed sccm 2012 with SUP role installed too. I have trouble of huge update coming every week from Microsoft .I selected some classification of Updates like critical & security & updates & roll-ups .as I said users are complaining of
huge updates and I decided to reduce unnecessary Updates. Is that a good Idea to omit category update and security and just having critical and roll-ups ?

of course users are not complaining of the time of update but the size of updates are make them crazy because their C
drive go full .they use disk clean up and delete c:\windows\softwareDestributon\download But that become full after a few week .
Ah, thanks for providing further information about the complaint.
So, the issue is, the C: drive on the computers of users is small?
The ConfigMgr client cache (ccmcache) and WUA cache (SoftwareDistribution) are both self-maintaining and will purge un-needed content after a time, but, in your case, it is not soon enough ?
You could consider deploying in a more-frequent cycle, so that the cached content is purged more quickly, but this means that more frequent updating activity would occur (and potentially more frequent disruption to users).
Ultimately, more space on C: would be of benefit, but that might not be easy for you to achieve (e.g. increasing the size of the volume), so, can you analyse the used-space vs free-space to determine what can be cleaned up? (eg temp files and other unnecessary
    data) ?
