Distributed Audio Processing & Massive G5 Issues

Hi All,
Iv recently purchased Logic studio to run on my Dual 2GHZ G5 with 1gb ram. Logic Studio doesnt seem to like the machine to say the very least. I can have 6 Audio instruments running 4 audio tracks & a few plugs, say 10 & it goes into total shutdown. The CPU meter's off the hook, im getting some sort of digital crackling/distortion & loads of "cannot process audio in time" errors.
Could the issue be that there's only 1 GB of ram? If thats the case, i'll 4 GB's tomorrow. There's still 95GB left on the system drive.
Iv also just purchased a Macbook pro & im trying to set up distributed processing to see if that makes a difference. Iv connected both machines via eithernet, loaded logic onto both machines, launched the nodes & configured the rack view settings to toggle DAP on/off.
When I turn DAP on, I get a delay on the tracks that the other machine is meant to be handling? Has anyone ever had this issue? Its pointless using DAP if there's going to be a noticeable delay.
ANY help with this is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Im running 512 atm. Any suggestions as to what I should be running????
512 should be fine - you should be able to get down to 128 really. Is there any improvement at 1024? Can you playback more reliably? At 512 I have nary a glitch.
How much ram are you using?
4GB. More than 1GB will help - but personally I think you have a more fundamental problem. I think you need to sort out the G5 performance issues first before you look at DAP. Your system definitely is under performing.
What interface are you using? Have you tried it with iternal audio? Any change?
Yes the i/o safety buffer is off. Should it be on?
leave it off.

Stephen

  • Distributed Audio Processing Question

This is probably a dumb question, but would there be any value in using a Mac Mini (or multiple Mini's using a switch) for Distributed Audio Processing? I tend to favor complex reverbs across my mixes and will be using some software instruments and would like to reduce/prevent the processor hit as I'm on a 2.4GHz iMac. I'm running 4 gigs of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue.
Yeah, I'm a Logic noob, so please be kind if this is a moronic idea :-p

    Hi.
Interessting Question. The macmini must have an intel core cpu and gigabit ethernet. The older models don't fit the specs for Logics QNode wich is needed, to let the iMac do distributed audio processing on the macmini. Additionally you have to connect the two macs with a gigabit network.
    http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/logicpro/specs.html
But i think there are better ways to fit your audio-needs. If you haven't bought the minis yet, buy an MacPro for this work and if this machine even aren't fast enough, then let the iMac do the distributed audio processing.
Additionally power can added to the MP with an Universal Audio DSP-Card.
    http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad-dsp_menu.html
I don't know how your workflow looks like. If you don't need the effects at the same time you record the virtual instruments, then do all the processing after the recording. This way should be the cheapest and best.

  • Will distributed audio processing work on Intel Macs?

I'm currently anticipating that I'm going to need more processing power to run virtual instruments and plug-ins in Logic Pro 7. The obvious solution is to get a second G5 and run it as a node, but I won't need it for a while yet. I might be able to put it off until the new Intel-based Macs come out next year, but then here's the key question: Does anyone know whether the Intel-based PowerMacs (and PowerBooks, for that matter...when they arrive) will be compatible as distributed audio processing nodes with a PowerMac G5 (PPC) host?

Macs is Macs. The processor will make no difference. It's the OS that counts.
How can you be certain? I have asked the same question elsewhere and the response I got was, "Even if anybody did know the answer to your question they would be developers who are under a strict Non-Dislcosure Agreement. You'll most likely just have to wait and see."
I'm not at all certain that it's a given. I'm not arguing your point that "It's the OS that counts." I agree. Nevertheless, we're talking about a significant change in fundamental hardware architecture, so the question as to whether a MacIntel and a PPC G5 will have the same interoperability as two G5s still seems reasonable to me. I don't doubt that it's possible, but I suspect that the MacIntel node machine might have to pay a price in CPU overhead for making the translation. After all, its software will be different.
I'll probably get another G5 anyway. I mean, it's not like it's going to be obsolete. I can run Logic Pro 7 in its current configuration for a looonnnggg time before I exhaust its capabilities. I'll run into hardware limitations long before I ever run into a software limitation.

  • Has Distributed audio processing been succesfull for anyone?

Can anyone who has worked with Distributed audio processing please post there set up and if it has been very successfull etc.
    thanks

For your comps listed it may not be terribly valuable. It's not terribly valuable for mine-larger, more modern comps can handle alot more. You can always try it.

  • Distributed Audio Processing

Does this only work with G5"s? I'm looking at possibly upgrading to Logic Pro and I was really excited about Distrubuted Audio Processing but then I'd read something saying it only works on G5's. Is this true? Are there any other requirements?

Mmm, doesn't 'only' work on G5's, however, that is where you will see the most benefit, as there is 'some' overhead associated with the process.
It also says you need gigabit ethernet, however, it will work in hundred base, but the above statement applies also. See if can borrow a G5 and have a go with your Powerbook. It is easy to setup and doesn't interfere with the node system. Make sure you install the latest versions of Logic and the latest Logic Node on the node system (G5).
Note, you can also use a Firewire cable between the units for networking, should the ethernet ports already be taken. (the newest Dual Core macs now have two gigabit ether ports!)

  • Distributing BPEL processes

    Hi,
Does anyone have experience distributing BPEL processes across machines. I essentially want to split my process onto two machines so as not to overload a single box. So the questions are:
    1. would i need 2 bpel servers ?
    2. if ans wer to 1 is yes then would I need to make web service calls between these processes running on different boxes ..
    regards,
    v

    Vikky,
    Are you using 10g?
If BPELConsole is up but you don't see any process, you can go to the log files and see what is the problem.
It might relates to permissions, or DB issues etc....

  • Why when playing downloaded music on apple tv through my distributed audio, it sometimes skips like a scratched record or just stops (in pause mode and won't play again) and yet i have full bars on the wireless in home service from the mac to the appletv?

Why when playing downloaded music on my mac through my appletv (I have distributed audio so play it through speakers not actually on the television), which is sent wireless from mac to the apple tv, does the music sometimes skip like a scratched record or stop playing (in pause mode) altogether and won't start again when I hit play?  I have full bars on the wireless icon.  Anyone experience this?

Full bars don't tell the whole story. These issues usually stem from interference, use istumbler to verify

OS 10.4.10 Update Causing Audio Popping (AND HUM) Issues:
The problem on my Intel Mac mini with external Klipsch speakers (two mid-range/high and a subwoofer) is REAL obvious as the system emits a hum like a Spinal Tap amplifier turned up to #11 when 10.4.10 powers down the audio circuitry
Then, if I play a song in iTunes, it first pops and the hum disappears right before playing.
Quite annoying. I restored the mini from a recent backup to 10.4.9. Problem gone.
I'm glad I test updates on the mini before applying them to my Intel iMac 24. I guess I'll just hide & watch what happens before doing any more updates.
Here's what I sent to Apple tech support:
    Guys/Gals (OS X Engineers):
Concerning the Snap, Crackle Pop Audio problem in the 10.4.10 update:
Please. Just do the right thing and fix the audio.
There is no need to power cycle the audio subsystem to save .0005 amps on the laptop line.
And then to make your Mac mini/iMac/other desktop users have to put up with it when using AC power is ridiculous.
Put the audio subsystem back like it was in 10.4.9 and let the laptop battery freaks looking for mini-amp savings get a "work-a-round".

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=752&start=0
First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you.

  • Massive stability issues - Disk Utility repair failed, hardware test failed

    Hi,
I am having massive stability issues. The installer will not install anything, programs are quitting randomly, and it is getting very annoying!
I read through a lot of posts and I have attempted to:
Repair my disk using the install cd: but that failed.
I did a Hardware test: but i had an error relating to fonts (?), couldn't see anything on the screen and I couldn't do anything.
Is there something else I could do that I haven't tried?
I have had my PB for a little over a year and have had no issues like this before. All of these issues seemed to start when I was playing a game and it suddenly just quit; I then couldn't go back into the game or re-install the game.
    Help!!
    12" Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   768 RAM

    Hi, Dan.
You wrote: "Repair my disk using the install cd: but that failed."That's a big problem. You won't get very far until the problems noted by Repair Disk, the function I presume you ran based on your description, are sorted out. It's possible the hard drive has failed.
If the Apple Hardware Test failed, that's another significant problem. If it produces messages you can read that describe the failure, write them down. The machine may need to be serviced by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
As to your next steps, first run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified to see what's up with your disk and if anything can be done to correct that.
    Good luck!

  • 10.9.2 lost audio and no core audio process present

This is a 2 month old MBP with the 512GB SSD and 16GB of RAM.
I've tried rebooting and reseting the PRAM as well as invoking the command in terminal to kill and start core audio process. Nothing. If I look in the Activity monitor there is no core audio process running. Right now I have no audio.
The problem presented itself after attemtping to plug in a pair of earphones. I've inspected the phone jack and it is clear of dust / debris.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I found the core audio process - I didn't have "All Processes" selected in the View. I tried killing it but still no luck. I also tried resetting my SMC.

  • Distributed Transaction Processing Services in Oracle RAC 11.2

    Hi,
Do we have to set the DTP parameter to TRUE for workload services that are going to be used for distributed transaction processing?
    Something like this ...
    srvctl modify service -d crm -s xa_01.service.us.oracle.com -x TRUE
Oracle 11.2 document is not very clear on this requirement. At one stage it says...
"Tightly coupled XA transactions no longer require the special type of singleton services (that is, Oracle Distributed Transaction Processing (DTP) services) to be deployed on Oracle RAC database. XA transactions are transparently supported on Oracle RAC databases with any type of services configuration."
But at the end of the same section...
"An external transaction manager, such as OraMTS, coordinates DTP/XA transactions. However, an internal Oracle transaction manager coordinates distributed SQL transactions. Both DTP/XA and distributed SQL transactions must use the DTP service in Oracle RAC."
So do we have to use DTP services with RAC or not?

    Hi Sanjeev,
I have some critical applications using Tuxedo on 10gR1/R2 RAC databases and there is no doubt to have with this versions.
Starting with 11gR1 it seems the main limitation is over...but there are still limitations ! To be honest I will keep the DTP parameter to true after the migration in 11.2 to avoid any problem. It is still recommended even if not mandatory :
To provide improved application performance with distributed transaction processing in Oracle RAC, you may want to take advantage of DTP services. Using DTP services, you can direct all branches of a distributed transaction to a single instance in the cluster. To load balance across the cluster, it is better to have several groups of smaller application servers with each group directing its transactions to a single service, or set of services, than to have one or two larger application servers.
    Also check note 462060.1.

  • Audio pitch / playback speed issue, MacBook Pro 10.4.10

I experienced a very strange audio pitch and speed issue that affected a recording I was making in Ableton Live 6.0.3.
Setup is MacBook Pro 2.16GHz, Mackie Onyx Satellite FW interface for audio, recording straight to internal HD.
I made two multitrack recordings (3-4 tracks each) which played back fine initially within Live. I then rendered the audio to AIFF in order to burn data and audio CDs.
Testing the playback in iTunes, the audio was strangely pitched lower than what we originally recorded. Checking other tracks from my iTunes library, they were playing back FASTER or higher-pitched than normal, and so did audio streamed from MySpace that I was familiar with.
CDs burnt from these AIFFs exhibited the same "lower pitch" / slower playback.
Reopening the Live Set, they were now also playing back lower pitched than what we had heard just minutes beforehand during the recording / mixing.
After I let the computer sleep for a few hours, I came back and checked -- system and internet audio was now playing back at normal speed, but the Live Set was still lower-pitched - the individual WAV files in the set were all pitched lower.
The Live recording prefs were stock standard - set to record 24 bit WAV at 44.1Khz. Since the issue seemed to affect non-Live audio as well, I'm guessing it was something more at the CoreAudio level?
I managed to salvage the session by taking the exported AIFFs into Tracktion 3 and using the pitch change function in the Clip Properties pane. One track was 1.5x off, the other was 1.125x off.
I'm at a complete loss as to why this would happen. It's a first (and hopefully only) occurrence. Has anyone had this happen to them? Could this be some sort of intermittent hardware (clock) glitch? Something to do with 6.0.3 and OS 10.4.10?
I do need to take this MacBook Pro in for servicing - it experienced the "bulging battery" issue and has a partially dead keyboard (the keys near the upper right) - but even with those issues I've not had audio issues like this.

In any case, if my Mac had problems, I'd send it in for service....!!!
About your problem, I don't think that it depends on hardware.
I'd check Live configuration and the SR of the audio files: you know, Live has so many features to modify speed and a lot of other parameters that bacomes easy to forget something.
Try recording something with Garage Band so you will be sure if there is a real problem.
    cheers
