Distributed Audio Question

Hi All,
As a follow on to my previous post before I take the leap from Cubase to Logic I have 2 more questions.
1. For those that have used Distributed Audio, is it necessary and useful, or was it a pain in the a**? Does it work well? How many machines did you chain.
2. How does the licensing on distributed audio work (buying extra copies, etc)?
Does anyone have any links (Apple or otherwise) to information on Distributed Audio, all the stuff that was there and indexed in Google has since been removed with the launch of Logic Pro 8.
Cheers
T.

It's probably best to check out the documentation:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/LogicPro_8_UserManual.pdf
To answer your questions:
1. I never needed it. But if I ever do it's nice to know that it was there. It was very easy to setup. All you need is a Gigabit switch to attach your Macs or if you're using just two, connect them directly. I only ever chained two machines.
2. Logic comes with a node utility that you run on the other macs so you don't need to buy more than once copy of Logic. However, the new manual above indicates that if you want to run third party AU effects on node machines they will need to be authorized on those systems.
However, in Logic's AU manager you can independently select whether a 3rd party plugin is available for Node usage.

  • Distributed Audio Processing Question

This is probably a dumb question, but would there be any value in using a Mac Mini (or multiple Mini's using a switch) for Distributed Audio Processing? I tend to favor complex reverbs across my mixes and will be using some software instruments and would like to reduce/prevent the processor hit as I'm on a 2.4GHz iMac. I'm running 4 gigs of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue.
Yeah, I'm a Logic noob, so please be kind if this is a moronic idea :-p

    Hi.
Interessting Question. The macmini must have an intel core cpu and gigabit ethernet. The older models don't fit the specs for Logics QNode wich is needed, to let the iMac do distributed audio processing on the macmini. Additionally you have to connect the two macs with a gigabit network.
    http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/logicpro/specs.html
But i think there are better ways to fit your audio-needs. If you haven't bought the minis yet, buy an MacPro for this work and if this machine even aren't fast enough, then let the iMac do the distributed audio processing.
Additionally power can added to the MP with an Universal Audio DSP-Card.
    http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad-dsp_menu.html
I don't know how your workflow looks like. If you don't need the effects at the same time you record the virtual instruments, then do all the processing after the recording. This way should be the cheapest and best.

  • Will distributed audio processing work on Intel Macs?

I'm currently anticipating that I'm going to need more processing power to run virtual instruments and plug-ins in Logic Pro 7. The obvious solution is to get a second G5 and run it as a node, but I won't need it for a while yet. I might be able to put it off until the new Intel-based Macs come out next year, but then here's the key question: Does anyone know whether the Intel-based PowerMacs (and PowerBooks, for that matter...when they arrive) will be compatible as distributed audio processing nodes with a PowerMac G5 (PPC) host?

Macs is Macs. The processor will make no difference. It's the OS that counts.
How can you be certain? I have asked the same question elsewhere and the response I got was, "Even if anybody did know the answer to your question they would be developers who are under a strict Non-Dislcosure Agreement. You'll most likely just have to wait and see."
I'm not at all certain that it's a given. I'm not arguing your point that "It's the OS that counts." I agree. Nevertheless, we're talking about a significant change in fundamental hardware architecture, so the question as to whether a MacIntel and a PPC G5 will have the same interoperability as two G5s still seems reasonable to me. I don't doubt that it's possible, but I suspect that the MacIntel node machine might have to pay a price in CPU overhead for making the translation. After all, its software will be different.
I'll probably get another G5 anyway. I mean, it's not like it's going to be obsolete. I can run Logic Pro 7 in its current configuration for a looonnnggg time before I exhaust its capabilities. I'll run into hardware limitations long before I ever run into a software limitation.

  • Can't edit multiple tracks - plus 2 easy audio questions

I have a sequence with 1 video track and 6 stereo audio tracks. I set an in and an out point. The area on the clips in the timeline between the two edit points highlights, I hit delete. Normally, the tracks between the points should disappear as the two segments come together and form one great edit.
But all the tracks do not highlight and edit. The video track and stereo audio tracks 3+4 and 5+6 highlight and LIFT off. But audio tracks 1+2 do not highlight or edit. And the whole sequence doesn't close together where the edit should be.
Only way I have been able to overcome this is to use the razor blade tool, cut each track individually. Highlight them all, and then hit delete.
This didn't use to be the way. FCP used to edit through one track, 3 tracks or all tracks, no problem.
Two audio questions. How do you stop the waveforms from drawing onto the clips in the timeline, in order to speed up FCP?
How do you get the audio in captured clips to be a Stereo Pair, from the outset?
Thanks to all you who help!

Is it usual for FCP to bog down on a 4 minute piece when audio wave forms are turned on??
    <
No. Should run fine. You get up into 6-12 audio tracks, FCP gets all moody and pouty.
But it depends on your system's capabilities and how well you have chosen your sequence settings.
Audio waveforms n FCP are a cruel joke compared to many other NLEs. Often easier to leave them off in the timeline, use the waveform in the Viewer and set markers for hooks in the audio tracks.

  • Why when playing downloaded music on apple tv through my distributed audio, it sometimes skips like a scratched record or just stops (in pause mode and won't play again) and yet i have full bars on the wireless in home service from the mac to the appletv?

Why when playing downloaded music on my mac through my appletv (I have distributed audio so play it through speakers not actually on the television), which is sent wireless from mac to the apple tv, does the music sometimes skip like a scratched record or stop playing (in pause mode) altogether and won't start again when I hit play?  I have full bars on the wireless icon.  Anyone experience this?

Full bars don't tell the whole story. These issues usually stem from interference, use istumbler to verify

  • Has Distributed audio processing been succesfull for anyone?

Can anyone who has worked with Distributed audio processing please post there set up and if it has been very successfull etc.
    thanks

For your comps listed it may not be terribly valuable. It's not terribly valuable for mine-larger, more modern comps can handle alot more. You can always try it.

  • Captivate 7.  How can I distribute audio across all of the slides?

New to Captivate.  When I recorded the audio, I did not know to record it to all of the slides.  all the audio is on the first slide.  How can I distribute it across all of the video slides?

@parth vyas ??? Why do you recommend to record/import this as background audio? I suppose the user wants to distribute the audio over slides, and to control how much audio on each slide, placing the slide markers where he wants? No such control is possible with background audio, which is just meant as... background.
@[email protected] Welcome to the forum,
So you choose to record to one slide which means that the slide will have a duration that corresponds with the length of the recorded audio clip. And you now want to distribute it over more sides? Is that a correct interpretation of your question?
One possibility is Audio, Edit, Project. In the editing dialog box, zoom out so that you see the entire audio clip. At its end you'll see a marker with a flag Slide 2 (yellow), which you can drag to the left, and then the audio will be partially on the second slide. At the new end you'll have the marker with flag Slide 3...
Second possibility: the audio clip will be in the Library. You can delete the audio on the first slide (Audio accordion), shorten slide to its wanted duration; then import the audio clip from the Library and you'll get a dialog box that has the option to distribute the audio over slides.
Third possibility: if you have the creative cloud or CS6, you'll have the roundtripping functionality with Audition CS6 or CC if you choose that option in the Edit Audio (Project) dialog box, and you can drag the slide markers in Audition.

  • Easy way to add more audiotracks??? + Environment midi/audio question???

    Hi!
Let's say, when I open a new project I have standard 24 audio tracks.
But when recording I see that I will need more, is there an easy and fast way to add more tracks?
As I see it now, I Have to run the Logic Setup Assistent, add more tracks (let's say 40). Reopen the project, go in the environment, create a new audio object for every track I want to add, double click it and assign the correct track to 'channel'. If I need to add 10 more tracks I have to go over these last steps 10 times. Am I missing some handy quick trick here?
Also, the second part of my question:
when I open the environment window, sometimes it only shows "midi" and the "GS instrument drum mapped" and some other times it shows "audio" and an "overview of my mixer". This seems to happen at random and I don't know why. The mixer view is what I want (especially when I need to add tracks as mentioned before), but when I get the midi view I don't know what to do to get the audio/mixer view. Any help?
    Powermac G5 dual 2,3 - 1,5Gig ram   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Logic 7.1.1 / M audio Ozone / BCF2000 / Drumkat 3.8

    Ok,
There is a way so you wont have to do the 10 setups.
Run the Setup Assistant and when it asks how many
audio tracks you want, always tell it more than you
will possibly need. I use 101. I know I will probably
never use that many but they are already and waiting
in case I do need more. This way you dont have to do
anything except go to the track menu and select create
new or double click the arear below the last
track and what ever track is highlighted, a exact duplicate
will appear. Then you just click and hold on it to make it
whatever kind of track you need from the menu that appears.
This first answer takes care of the second question. Since you
dont need to go into the enviroment to hook up new tracks.
Just so you know if you click and hold on the name of the layer
Midi, instruments, clicks and ports or whatever another menu
will appear letting you choose what layer you want to go to.
    This is the easy way!

  • T410s/T410/T510 DP- HDMI, audio questions, survey

    Hi,
after all the confusion concerning DisplayPort-audio and the T-series, I decided to find out for myself and test it at my local Lenovo dealer.
As my dealer had not a single HDMI and audio capable output device in his shop, I brought my own Medion MD 20226 LCD TV, which has 2 HDMI-in ports.
The idea was to use a 2m DisplayPort->HDMI-cable provided by the dealer in order to connect the T410s in question to my little TV.
Background: Due to the misleading information from Lenovo concerning the last generation T400s/T400/T500 models and their audio over DisplayPort issue (no audio at all), I expected to get a picture without any problems but that I would need to figure out how to enable the sound by changing some settings inside Windows 7.
What happened: Actually neither me nor my dealer were able to get ANYTHING out of the DisplayPort, when using the DisplayPort->HDMI-cable. There was NEITHER video NOR audio!
I should point out that at the time being my dealer only had T410s models without the (maybe) switchable NVidia graphics.
Another point that I want to emphasize is that, after 45 minutes of trying everything we could to make it work, we switched to the T510 that was standing right beside the T410s in his show room. Unfortunately I was too confused to ask what kind of graphics setup this machine had, but the result was the same: no video, no audio at the TV.
As it is apparent that there are quite a lot of confused Lenovo customers out there that have similar questions:
I HEREBY FORMALLY ASK FOR A DETAILED AND IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION/CLARIFICATION OF POSSIBLE DP->HDMI, DP-AUDIO AND DP->HDMI-AUDIO ISSUES WITH THE CURRENT T410s/T410/T510 SERIES (all combinations of graphics cards).
Of course I think that it would be best if one of the Lenovo engineers would take care of that in one of the Lenovo blogs.
But until then, it might be a good starting point to ask those of us, who already have a T410s/T410/T510.
So I just start right away:
    MODEL:                   T410s (NUK39GE / 2912-39G)
    used GPU:              Intel GMA 5 / QM57
    DP->DP-video:       not tested
    DP->DP-audio:      not tested
    DP->HDMI-video:  tested->not working
    DP->HDMI-audio: tested->not working
As I said, I was only able to test it at my local Lenovo dealer and I gave up after around 1 hour of testing. So it might be, that someone who has more time and resources (different adaptors) might be able to get it running.
So to all of you out there with a new Tx10(s), please take the time, find your next HDMI-TV and try it.
And to Lenovo: as long as there is no official statement concerning this, I will keep asking for an official response ;-) (and THIS time, don't blame the chipset, as the new Intel-Calpella has all the HD-video/audio goodness one could ask for: wiki article on Intel Calpella and its DP features).
    Thanks for reading all this!

  • Bluetooth / audio question

Hi Guys - i have a question which may be more related to a particular application http://www.sonomawireworks.com/forums/viewforum.php?id=2 but seeing as no-one there seems to be able t help me (and it may in fact be a Mac, rather than 'app' related issue - I thought i'd try here)... ok, so here's my problem....
ight, I downloaded RW from Line 6 a while back (version X / Mac OSX). All was going well - great app then....(and this may be just coincidence) I tried to pair my Vaio with the Mac (unsuccessfully as it happens). After having done this, when booting up (which now takes a while) I get an alert saying
    "Bluetooth Audio Failed
There was an error connecting to your headset / ignore / stop using your headset"
Irrespective of the option I select, when RW does eventually fires up, there is no audio. I can see the app is playing OK (the master dials are registering) - but no output. Same problem even if I turn off Bluetooth on the MAC...
Any ideas guys? - I use the app for teaching and this is a real headache...

This whole Bluetooth thing is new to me ...
    1. Does a Bluetooth headphone set (for music only - don't need a mic for phone calls) require a Battery(s) to operate? If so, how often do you have to replace the battery(s)  say for 1 hour per day of use?
There is stereo bluetooth headsets that can be used just for audio listing but most bluetooths are made for phone handsfree use, if you want to listen to audio through bluetooth you have to verify the headset support A2DP profile for streaming audio.
    2. Anyone recommend a very good headphone set that is comfortable & great sound? Do I have to buy something specific for the DX from Verizon? Moto?  Or can I walk into any store and buy a Bluetooth Audio headphone and expect it to work? I *really* don't want to spend $150+ for decent headphones.
Basically all bluetooths can be used but it is a prefrence of what bluetooth works for you but I use Motorola H720 from http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Motorola+-+H720+Bluetooth+Headset+-+Black/9755234.p?id=1218167395767&skuId=9755234&st=bluetooth%20headset&cp=1&lp=5
    $59.99
    3. Are there any "gotchas" using Bluetooth for Audio music?  e.g., sound quality issues? interference?
Your streaming audio wirelessly and the quality can reflect this, if you want the better level of audio through a bluetooth give this a look at http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rocketfish%26%23153%3B+Mobile+-+Mobile+Behind-the-Head+Bluetooth+Stereo+Headphones+-+Black/9828558.p?id=1218180649134&skuId=9828558&st=bluetooth&contract_desc=null

  • Quality of audio question

    Hello there,
Watching Nigel's presentation at MAX I've noticed that there was a question about possibility to stream MP3 within the LCCS framework.
Nigel, could you elaborate a bit on that (after the Holiday ). For example, wether it's possible to use 'codec' property in MicrophoneManager or AudioPublisher to integrate other than Speex audio codec?
The reason I ask such question is that the audio quality - dynamic range, frequency range, sampling rate - for my project is of significant importance.
Any recommendations as to how to approach the task of maximizing audio fidelity would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Igor Borodin

Infact I said the Flash Player only has "encoders" for voice codecs (but it has decoders for much larger set of a/v formats, like MP3 and H264).
Basically encoding is usually quite expensive so the player only has encoders for low quality / low processing power formats (voice for audio and lower quality video for webcams).
Decoding is most of the time less resource intensive than encoding, and if available can leverage hardware accelleration so the player can supports higher quality formats.

    Gurus,
We are upgrading from 9.3.3 to 11.1.2.1(Distributed environment) and have gone through the 11.1.2.1 start here , installation and configuration guides.
    Existing environment:
    Machine1(Windows 2003 R2): Hyperion Shared Services, EAS webapp,Essbase Provider Services(WebApp)
Machine2(Windows 2003 R2): Workspace, BI+ Services, BI+ UIServices, BI+ Client, Web Analysis, Financial Reporting, Interactive Reporting
    Machine3(Windows 2003 R2): Planning Application/Web Server,EPMA web
    Machine4(Windows 2003 R2): HFM Web/App , FDQM Web/App
    Machine5(Linux 32bit) : Essbase Server
    Machine6(Linux 64bit) : Oracle RDBMS
On Upgraded env plan to move to Windows 2008 and have:
    Machine1(Windows 2008 x64): Foundation Services (Hyperion Shared Services,Workspace web,EAS webapp, EPS webapp)
    Machine2(Windows 2008 x64): Web Analysis,Reporting&Analysis Framework,Financial Reporting,Interactive Reporting,

    Machine5(Linux 64bit) : Essbase Server
    Machine6(Linux 64bit) : Oracle RDBMS
From Page 94 "Oracle® Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management System Installation and Configuration Guide RELEASE 11.1.2.1 Updated: June 2011" states:
    a)
On the machine on which you plan to administer the WebLogic Server, you must install all
Web applications for all applications you plan to deploy on any machine in the environment.
(The WebLogic Administration Server is installed and deployed on the Foundation Services
    machine.)
    b)
On each remote machine in a distributed environment, install the Web applications you
plan to run on that machine and then use EPM System Configurator to deploy the Web
applications automatically, or manually deploy the Web applications.
Note that EPM System Installer installs WebLogic Server on each machine (for Web tier and
Service tier components) in a distributed environment.
    c)
If you are deploying Web applications on a machine other than the WebLogic
Administration Server machine, WebLogic Administration Server must be running
    Question:
    ======
    1) After installing components on respective machines per guideline a),b) above do we have to deploy webapps from products related to machine2,3,4 on machine1(foundation services). If everything gets deployed on Shared service machine -- we are concerned about the system resources that will be needed to run all the webapps.
    2) Assuming we do not want to use a cluster - do we still have to depoy to admin server? Please clarify.
    Best Regards

    When you say:
Machine B Install Planning web application server
Then go back to Machine A and install Planning web application server
    >>
For this I understand from EPM Installer options need to select option of install components individually or by tier and choose all relevant components for plannnig
Could you please clarify why this step is required - meaning what is purpose behind this - It would create software directory and install files right.
We have already done this on above machine B earlier right? So duplicating the installation piece?
Are we doing this in order to setup weblogic cluster like active passive config or just for convenicen to deploy?
Deploy and Configure Planning web application server on Machine B and deploy to an exisiting domain on Machine A
So this part is just launching EPM configurator and do tasks related to Plannnig on machine B and when choosing the domain select option to use already created on machine A right? Also when I do the installation for Planning on Machine B - wont it also install admin server on same machine which I can use to deploy locally? Please clarify.

  • Audio question for you Premiere Pro vets...

    Hi there -
FCP editor here who is loving the new PPro CS5 and is trying to convince my studio to do our next show on it.
I'm having trouble with one particular audio situation and so far all the help documents I've read aren't giving me an answer:
I'm trying to export a quicktime file with multiple audio tracks. For example: track 1 is a stereo track with all the camera audio, while track 2 is a stereo track with Music & effects. This would create a similar situation of a TV show dumped to tape with channels 1&2 program audio, and channel 3&4 Music and Effects.
My assumed path would be to create 2 submixes: 1 "camera" and 2 "music & Effects." I was then hoping to export a quicktime with each sub mix as a separate audio track inside the exported quicktime. Is this correct?
Can anyone help an old man out?

Thanks so much for helping with this.  I can only hope that Todd sees it also.
I have submitted a feature request.  Regardless, the ability to map tracks to channels, and the ability to create quicktime files with multiple audio tracks is definitely something that should be possible.
If you're wondering more about the applied use:  Besides being able to map tracks to an audio channel for tape, the most important time when this is used is this: At the end of a TV show it's customary for us to export a final quicktime with program audio and music separated:  2 audio tracks in one quicktime.  If we want director commentary, that also becomes another audio track inside the quicktime.  A "track" can be stereo or mono.
It creates a single quicktime file where all audio elements are separated, allowing us to distribute a single file to multiple departments who may have unique editing/sound requirements.  Simplifies things a lot.
As it stands now, we would have to take the quicktime/audio elements back into Final Cut Pro or AVID to achieve this.  (Unless someone else knows a way to do in Premiere - I'm all ears).

  • Hopefully Simple Audio Question

I am doing a highlight film for a local high school and I have a question about the music. At the end of the game highlight sometimes the song is not completly over so I cut it to end it at the same time as the video. My question for you is how can I fade out just the last 5 seconds of the song and not fade out the whole song. I don't want it getting softer and softer through the song. I think you do it by cutting the last 5 or 10 sec. of the audio (song) and make it an independent clip then take that clip and fade it out. Will this work or not. Thanks. Also I am having a lot of trouble adding text to my video. Should I just do it in motion and not even mess with it in Final Cut. Thanks

press Option W to turn on clip overlays.
then press p to change to the pen tool.
on your music track create an audio keyframe about 5 seconds before the end (just click on the line in the audio track using the pen tool)
create another audio keyframe at the end of the music, and drag this one down to the bottom of the track
... yaaa, you just created an audio fade
alternatively just apply a crossfade transition to the end of your audio track and make the crossfade last 5 seconds long

    =========
I have 2 JMS servers target to 2 managed servers. I have Distributed Queues (distqueue1 & distqueue2) in a module targetted to both of the jms servers.

I have an application deployed on the clustered environment.
    =============================================================-
Till now I use to have my app connected to (Domain 1(host1)) to one jms server (targetted on ManagedServer 1), now I want my application to do lookup to the clustered JMS on both the servers.
So my question is how we proceed with the application to talk to the clustered jms (on multiple managed servers (on multiple physical hosts))

You can specify the distributed destination JNDI name for the destination. Weblogic provides cluster wide JNDI replication - so any object that is deployed to any of the managed servers or to the cluster will be visible in the global JNDI tree of all the managed servers in the cluster. So for the JNDI lookup you can connect to a single managed server, or, A better load balanced approach would be to use a dns lookup where your app connects to a dns name and the dns is resolved to different IP address ( man1 IP, man 2 IP etc) on each lookup.
You will have to get the load balancing setup on the Connection factory and the CF has to be deployed to a cluster to avoid unwanted routing between the man servers.
This has been discussed a lot in the jms forum. Please search and you will get more details.
One good link I got with a quick search
