Distributed audio setup

can somebody confirm for me that in using this system I would have my plug-ins etc on one computer but logic and the actual files on another?

The basic setup would be to install Logic in the
usual way on the main computer, and install Logic
Node on the remote nodes.
In operation, Logic will use a node for processing,
when it can.
It's incredibly easy to set up and use.
great, thanks

  • Distributed Audio Question

    Hi All,
As a follow on to my previous post before I take the leap from Cubase to Logic I have 2 more questions.
    1. For those that have used Distributed Audio, is it necessary and useful, or was it a pain in the a**? Does it work well? How many machines did you chain.
    2. How does the licensing on distributed audio work (buying extra copies, etc)?
Does anyone have any links (Apple or otherwise) to information on Distributed Audio, all the stuff that was there and indexed in Google has since been removed with the launch of Logic Pro 8.
    Cheers
    T.

It's probably best to check out the documentation:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/LogicPro_8_UserManual.pdf
    To answer your questions:
    1. I never needed it. But if I ever do it's nice to know that it was there. It was very easy to setup. All you need is a Gigabit switch to attach your Macs or if you're using just two, connect them directly. I only ever chained two machines.
    2. Logic comes with a node utility that you run on the other macs so you don't need to buy more than once copy of Logic. However, the new manual above indicates that if you want to run third party AU effects on node machines they will need to be authorized on those systems.
However, in Logic's AU manager you can independently select whether a 3rd party plugin is available for Node usage.

Check your connections.  I had the same problem where my side speakers didn't work in 5.1 but did in 7.1, leaving me with two more nonexistent surround speakers.  I had the speakers plugged in incorrectly.  You might not be as slow as me however it doesn't hurt to make sure.

  • AUDIO SETUP ASSISTANT GONE

I noticed that I can no longer use the core audio setup assistant in express 8. In 7, I could adjust the amount of tracks, buses ect. They have apparently got rid of that feature in 8. So now I have 64 buses and instead of setting the record max time at around 15 minutes in 7, I now can record for over 400 minutes. That seems a bit overkill. Is there a way to cut this back to about 8 buses and 24 audio tracks and 16 midi and 16 instrument tracks in the setup? OR is adjusting those settings no longer available?

Those setup options are in System Preferences, under the Apple menu.

  • Distributed Audio Processing Question

This is probably a dumb question, but would there be any value in using a Mac Mini (or multiple Mini's using a switch) for Distributed Audio Processing? I tend to favor complex reverbs across my mixes and will be using some software instruments and would like to reduce/prevent the processor hit as I'm on a 2.4GHz iMac. I'm running 4 gigs of RAM so memory shouldn't be an issue.
Yeah, I'm a Logic noob, so please be kind if this is a moronic idea :-p

    Hi.
Interessting Question. The macmini must have an intel core cpu and gigabit ethernet. The older models don't fit the specs for Logics QNode wich is needed, to let the iMac do distributed audio processing on the macmini. Additionally you have to connect the two macs with a gigabit network.
    http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/logicpro/specs.html
But i think there are better ways to fit your audio-needs. If you haven't bought the minis yet, buy an MacPro for this work and if this machine even aren't fast enough, then let the iMac do the distributed audio processing.
Additionally power can added to the MP with an Universal Audio DSP-Card.
    http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad-dsp_menu.html
I don't know how your workflow looks like. If you don't need the effects at the same time you record the virtual instruments, then do all the processing after the recording. This way should be the cheapest and best.

  • Will distributed audio processing work on Intel Macs?

I'm currently anticipating that I'm going to need more processing power to run virtual instruments and plug-ins in Logic Pro 7. The obvious solution is to get a second G5 and run it as a node, but I won't need it for a while yet. I might be able to put it off until the new Intel-based Macs come out next year, but then here's the key question: Does anyone know whether the Intel-based PowerMacs (and PowerBooks, for that matter...when they arrive) will be compatible as distributed audio processing nodes with a PowerMac G5 (PPC) host?

Macs is Macs. The processor will make no difference. It's the OS that counts.
How can you be certain? I have asked the same question elsewhere and the response I got was, "Even if anybody did know the answer to your question they would be developers who are under a strict Non-Dislcosure Agreement. You'll most likely just have to wait and see."
I'm not at all certain that it's a given. I'm not arguing your point that "It's the OS that counts." I agree. Nevertheless, we're talking about a significant change in fundamental hardware architecture, so the question as to whether a MacIntel and a PPC G5 will have the same interoperability as two G5s still seems reasonable to me. I don't doubt that it's possible, but I suspect that the MacIntel node machine might have to pay a price in CPU overhead for making the translation. After all, its software will be different.
I'll probably get another G5 anyway. I mean, it's not like it's going to be obsolete. I can run Logic Pro 7 in its current configuration for a looonnnggg time before I exhaust its capabilities. I'll run into hardware limitations long before I ever run into a software limitation.

  • [SOLVED] Audio setup troubles with usb headphones and built-in sound

    Hello,
I Just started using Arch about a month ago after going through many Debian and Ubuntu variants.  After all my frustrations with apt pinning to get working 10bit video playback, only to have everything else uninstalled by crappy dependency checking, I am extremely happy with how easy it was in Arch.
Now I am having difficulties perfecting my audio setup.  Almost everything else is set up to satisfactory levels but I have yet to bring the sound to the same standard.  With just ALSA my built in audio works, but defaults to the unused hdmi on my nvidia graphics.  I have managed to get it to switch at some point but with ALSA alone I could never get my usb headset to work at all.
By using pulseaudio as well I was able to get simutaneous playback, which is ideal, but had choppiness and other issues with just the usb headset.  I followed some instructions found on the arch wiki and other places on the net for choppiness in both ALSA and pulse and tried the fixes listed in various combinations.  I ended up with outcomes such as pulse not starting, no sound at all, creepy ticking in usb and perfect sound on speakers, and my current situation of perfect sound on speaker and acceptable but tinny sound on usb which degrades over time requiring restart.
Is anyone able to give any advice or point me to any guides I may have overlooked?
Setting up sound from scratch is something I have never done before coming to Arch, so I don't know what commands are useful for audio specifically, but learning is one of the reasons I decided on Arch. As for commands I do know, lspci and lsusb, relevant entries are as follows:
    spricc ~ $ lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF104 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)
Bus 004 Device 003: ID 1532:000e Razer USA, Ltd
USB device is a Razer Megalodon headset, NVIDIA Audio is of no interest to me, unless it is not what i think it is.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this.

I managed to find a solution.

Following this exactly didnt work before, but setting the sample rate to 192000 instead seems to have done the trick

  • Why when playing downloaded music on apple tv through my distributed audio, it sometimes skips like a scratched record or just stops (in pause mode and won't play again) and yet i have full bars on the wireless in home service from the mac to the appletv?

Why when playing downloaded music on my mac through my appletv (I have distributed audio so play it through speakers not actually on the television), which is sent wireless from mac to the apple tv, does the music sometimes skip like a scratched record or stop playing (in pause mode) altogether and won't start again when I hit play?  I have full bars on the wireless icon.  Anyone experience this?

Full bars don't tell the whole story. These issues usually stem from interference, use istumbler to verify

  • Problems with MOTU Audio Setup and Mavericks.

    Hi!
after installing the latest update of MOTU Audio Drivers (v1.6.59200 | Nov. 12, 2013) for some sessions Motu Audio Setup has worked correctly.
Now, after a week or so, it detects the interfaces (by the way a 828vMk II + 8pre, both FW) when I power them, so it fires up as usual; but when launched is not showing any device connected.
I tried to thrash the Audio Devices preference panels, but no result.
Shall I wait for a new MOTU update or is there any other workaround I could try?
    Thanks in advance for help
    Massimo

I had the same problem. The fix after multiple configurations is as follows.
    1) Reset the PRAM and shutdown - this will clear the FW settings
    2) Boot the systems but with on ONE Motu828 powered on.
    3) After the system is up and you can see the one device - power the second device on it the Motu Audio Setup program should see both.
there is some kind of FW race problem. Also, go to preference, turn OFF IPV4 stack from the FW device in NW setting. If I do not do this, I cannot get the system to see the devices and it basically is in some sort of "hung" state.

  • Recommended KDE audio setup

I have search high and low, but I cannot seem to fix my audio issues, nor find out what really is the recommended audio setup for Arch and KDE
If I just have alsa-utils installed I get this message A LOT!
If I install alsa-utils, pulseaudio and pulseaudio-alsa, my volume settings are never remembered, I want my laptop to start up with the volume set to what it was when it was shutdown
What is the recommended audio setup for Arch with KDE?
    Thank you

You can write your own udev rules to make sure your hardware is identified always the same way: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Udev (http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html)

  • Audio setup in CS5 and audio overlay workflow

Here is the situation: I have a 720p mpeg 2 file of a football game that is the original tv broadcast. The file contains muxed A/V. I also have the radio version of the same game in mp3 format with different announcers for the game. I would like to overlay the radio audio with the television video and keep everything in sync.
    1. What would be a good workflow to achieve this? Can this be done in Premiere or Encore?
    2. I would like to give the viewer the option to watch the game using the TV audio or radio audio. Similiar to a dvd movie with English or Spanish versions. How can i set up a menu option for this in Encore.
    thanks for any help.

Bill, thanks for the help. I have 2 other questions.
    1. How do i convert the mp3 to .WAV and
    2. what is the workflow to do a "Audio Setup" option in the main menu?
    thanks.

  • Has Distributed audio processing been succesfull for anyone?

Can anyone who has worked with Distributed audio processing please post there set up and if it has been very successfull etc.
    thanks

For your comps listed it may not be terribly valuable. It's not terribly valuable for mine-larger, more modern comps can handle alot more. You can always try it.

  • Dual Monitor Audio Setup?

    Hi there!
Getting my new Mac Mini next week.
Question about setup - dual monitor and audio.
I will be connecting to my TV via DVI - HDMI and monitor via MDP - HDMI.
What are my best options for audio?
Monitor doesn't have speakers so I was thinking of using my current 2.1 system with a 3.5mm jack. I know I can use a splitter from the 3.5mm port on the Mini for analogue sound but is there any way of outputting digital audio to the TV and analogue to my speakers.
On my PC audio is carried to the TV via HDMI so auto switches audio when TV is detected, can the Mini do similar?
    Cheers

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    1. The mini's m-DVI and m-DP do not carry audio.
    2. Switching from analog to digital audio is a mechanical process that occurs in the audio mini-port. The digital mini-plug is about 2 mm longer than the analog plug and effects the change.
    3. You might consider using the audio port as the source of digital audio for your TV and get a USB adapter for analog audio for your speakers.
    4. You can add the digital audio to the HDMI stream with this device;

  • Proper audio setup?

    Hello there!
I'm new to Archlinux and this is my first post on this forum. I've been using Ubuntu for about 2 years but I learned nothing about Linux. Now I have fast system where I installed only those things I wanted and I feel I accomplished something. I was able to setup my internet connection, installed X11 and then Openbox with some themes and icons. I also installed Tint2 and Dropbox which shows on it nicely and managed to install Pacaur which manages AUR packages nicely. I was even clever enough to mount my Windows and Ubuntu partitions and copy-pasted script which pops-up when USB drive is inserted. All in all I have now fairly well performing system and I would be ready to run cfdisk and delete my Ubuntu partition if there weren't one big annoyance: SOUND.
In every situation I presented above I was complete noob but with Google and magnificent Archwiki I learned everything I needed to overcome all problems. Even though there's still much work to do, I have at least a glimpse on what is it about and where should I look for help. But one thing I'm completely lost in is sound configuration.
According to alsamixer I have 3 devices:
    0. Lexicon Alpha (USB sound card)
    1. HDA Intel
    2. HDA ATI HDMI
Since I have my speakers plugged into Lexicon Alpha, and plan to use it solely, I don't care about the two others. I have ALSA (default from installation) and I also installed pulseaudio in an effort to solve my sound issues. Here's a list of features I expect to get from my sound setup (sorted by priority):
    1. Play music & videos via VLC and Youtube.
    2. Record basic input from my microphone.
    3. Complete audio workstation: MIDI sequencing by Rosegarden with soundfonts provided by Qsynth (or something else), drum writing done in Hydrogen, everything synchronized via Jack and put it into Ardour where I can record other sound from outside.
Right now, I'm trying to get point 1 working. VLC seems to work after I directly told it to use ALSA. Youtube randomly works. Right now it's fine but sometimes it works only after reinstallation of flashplugin and sometimes not at all. But my goal is not only to get something working. I'd like to know what I'm doing. Are there any configuration files where I could easily tell my system what soundcards to run (or not to)? How to tell Firefox to use one particular driver or sound card? Is it neccessary to have Pulseaudio installed? If possible I'd love to get rid of it. I'm totally lost and know nothing about how sound works on linux. I remember that I was able to run all 3 points in my Ubuntu days but I was as lost as I'm now and it had stopped working some time ago as well.
And yes, I read ALSA Archwiki, Pulseaudio documentation and various Google results. I found solutions like copy-paste this to get that working but none of them helped me in terms of understanding my sound system. Most of them I didn't onderstand. Here's a summary of what I'm trying to accomplish:
    - Get point 1 working at 100% (other points are not that important and I think I should be able to figure them out once I know how to do the rest).
    - Know whether Pulseaudio is neccessary for point 1, 2 and 3.
    - Know how to configure my system to use only Lexicon Alpha (but with an option to take it back).
    - Overall Improve my knowledge of audio in Linux to the point where I'm able to determine what to Google for.
I'd be glad if someone helped me out or at least point me at a reasonable source of information.
    Cheers,
    Kubouch

No, you will not need pulseaudio.
Thanks, breps, this is helpful. I'll look into the file, it seems to be very well descripted. Also good to know Pulseaudio isn't necessary. I like to keep things as small as possible.

Ah, in that case you probably want a realtime kernel, or maybe the BFS scheduler with threadirqs will be sufficient. Maybe Gentoo Studio has good ideas.
I'm aware of realtime kernels but I'd rather solve my basic issues first, then delete Ubuntu and after that I can play with kernels. I'll look into it, eventually, when the right time comes.

You might also want to take a look at LinuxBBQ Rocks: http://linuxbbq.org/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=30
As I replied to breps, my main priority is to get my bearings, set up my sound to work reliably and then fiddle with recording. But LinuxBBQ is another distro, isn't it? I'd rather not reinstall my system once again. But thanks for the reply, anyway. I can at least look at the list of applications to broaden my horizons.

  • Audio setup?

I have a Sony 5.1 Ch. Home Theater System hooked up to my iMac with a HDMI to Mini Displayport cable. My iMac is outputting surround sound just fine. I was just wondering what is the difference between using the Mini Displayport for surroud sound audio or using a Digital Optical cable through the headphone jack? After looking through the Apple support community, I haven't read of anyone using the Mini Display port to output surround sound.

    I don't know.
I have a dc7800 CMT and I have a set of 2 speakers with a sub-woofer connected to the light green port and that setup works fine for me.
I do not believe you are correct regarding the audio support capability in the dc7800 series of PC's (unless of course you have added an audio card).
Please refer to the integrated audio specs listed on page 27 at the link below.
