Distribution of java applications

Hi,
I have developed a Java application program to monitor real time data. This application communicates with electronic devices and collects the real time data. This application I am using on MS-Windows platform.
Is there a way to make a single installable package which will install both application as well as the required Java runtime environment? Which will help in distribution of this application. Can you suggest me a method to do it?
Thank you very much.

  • Embedding video in Java Application

I'm a total newbie, trying to decide if Java is the way to go for our application.
We want to be able to create an interactive application with buttons, drag & drop, data input fields, hot spots, etc
AND also show video... windows format, apple format, flash format.
We want our application to be deployable either as...
1 - a standalone app... running on a system not on a network or the internet
    2 - a web app
We want the video player to be embedded in the application and not launch a player in a seperate window... thus we want to maintain as much control within the confines of our application as possible.
    MY QUESTIONS:
1 - Will the Java Media Framework allow us to embed movies in our application as described?
2 - Is it fairly easy to code such in our Java application?
3 - Any code snippets around?
4 - Re: Standalone/CD distribution version: Can the JMF be installed along with the application so the client doesn't have to "go out and install more stuff" ??
5 - Re: Web - must the user download and install more stuff... other than the Java Virtual Machine to have the JMF work on their system?
6 - Is the JMF multi-platform... Windows, Apple, Unix/Linux, etc like the JVM ?
thanks for any help on this. Will

Yes all of what you require is doable in Java
    Try
    http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/solutions/index.html
    Check some of these samples
Also for a web version check
    http://java.sun.com/dev/evangcentral/totallytech/jmf2.html
(Haven't studied this myself - but should give you an idea or two)
    Platform-wise - check here
    http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/download.html
In terms of CD distribution - you should be able to package most stuff into a Jar file
Not completely sure as there are 'Windows Performance pack' downloads which I think toake advantage of native DLLs
Have a read around the JMF Installation pages - should answer most of your questions

  • To launch a java application in Windows environment

    hello,
I need to distribute one stand alone application, that I made using NetBeans, for sale it.
I know that this is not a so simple problem, because delivering the program to one client you cannot simlpy say him to launch the jar file....
I saw that, in the Windows environment, program like eclipse or netBeans run thruogth an .exe file, that I think is a program that its purpose is to define the java environment for the application in the particular host operative environment .
Perhaps they are corporations like InstallShield (now Macrovision) that sale programs to solve this type of problems..., and I already used this type of programs to install some my
applications that I coded in languages different than java.
But before to look for one of them, I should like have more informations how this problem fits in java language, knowing that java is different to other languages because use JRE and have proper tools, how JWS and JNPL, that concern with this problem.
...Looking in the forum I had not much help..., but I saw that someone uses to write launchers program in different language, like C, as well I had not so much detailled instructions about how to do it.
In order to solve my problem I should like have, from some one that already made it, some general information about how he realized the commercial installation of java applications in the most used Operatve Systems (particullary Windows), and possibly to have links to web sites for good explanations, including advantages to buy apposite commercials installation programs too.
    thank you very much
    tonyMrsangelo

You can distribute it as an executable JAR so users will run it by double clicking. The would be required to have JRE installed.
You can distribute it online via WebStart. Users need JRE but it's easier to manage updates and distribution of new versions.
You can distribute it with AjaxSwing, a product that deploys Swing applications as AJAX websites so you don't need JRE at all.
You can create EXE files using many of the products available. Google for it and you'll get lots of hits.

    Thank you!

inside Java Studio Enterprise/Netbeans stack of tools this functionality is implemented as NetBeans Profiler
    http://profiler.netbeans.org/
The Profiler hasn't been a part of default Netbeans distribution. The JSE8 is based on NB4.1. Profiler compatible with NB4.1 is an early-access Milestone release, and thus i'd recommend to consider more recent version of the Profiler, the one for NB5.x (though you'd need to install NB5 also).

  • Integrating Webhelp in a Java Application

In order to use Robohelp-generated help with my java application I need to compile, incorporate and distribute the file RoboHelp_CSH.java with my application. In addition I would like to make some modifications to the file. However the source includes the statement "Copyright© 2008 Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights reserved." at the top of the file. This statement appears to prevent re-distribution which would seem to negate the purpose of providing this file in the first place. How are other users dealing with this?
    Thanks,
    David

Hi David. You'll have seen that various people have responded to the same query on the HATT forum. If I were you I'd stick to asking RoboHelp related queries here in future.
For anyone else who may have a similar issue in the future, the consensus seems to be that your RH licence gives you the right to redistribute whatever file is required to access the help. However changing a file would be a copyright contravention. If in doubt, contact Adobe Support.

  • Goal: type arabic in a java application

    hi all:
i have a java application in which i would want to type in arabic into a text field.. this works in windows but not in my mandrake linux..
Q1: can this be easily solved in linux, knowing that i can type arabic in some applications, say mozila..
Q2: if not, i was thinking of writing java-code to handle the buttons and for every button pressed an arabic letter would be displayed instead of the roman one.. i should write some conversion table... is this advisable or is there some already-written library?? where should i look for one??
    thanks..

Can someone tell me how to use the Java Compiler in a
java application?Aw heck, this is advanced compared to some of the other stuff posted here.
Short answer: copy a "tools.jar" from a JDK distribution, and put it in your JRE's "lib" directory. Then invoke "sun.tools.javac.Main.main()".
Problem: this interface isn't very well designed for in-process use. It has the alarming habit of trying to exit on errors - I guess the implementors always assumed that it would be invoked as a standalone tool.
So it's best to invoke it as such (as a standalone tool) from your process (using Runtime.exec("java sun.tools.javac.Main file1.java"), etc..

  • Profiling a Java Application

I am relatively new in using a profiler. A large simulation software that I developed requires to be profiled. I want to keep track of the memory usage, CPU usage, time, etc associated with a function call etc. I tried to use Sun Studio 8 to run the profiler. It seems the tutorials on profilers .. all of them ... are intended for Enterprise Applications. All I require is to monitor a general Java application. Could someone answer whether it is possible to profile a java Application?

inside Java Studio Enterprise/Netbeans stack of tools this functionality is implemented as NetBeans Profiler
    http://profiler.netbeans.org/
The Profiler hasn't been a part of default Netbeans distribution. The JSE8 is based on NB4.1. Profiler compatible with NB4.1 is an early-access Milestone release, and thus i'd recommend to consider more recent version of the Profiler, the one for NB5.x (though you'd need to install NB5 also).

  • How do I bundle fonts with my java application?

I have a strange problem... I'm writing a java application with GUI (using swing btw, but that doesn't have anything to do with it :) ) and I'm using some fonts that obviously aren't standard on all operating systems. That's too sad, because now my program looks different in different environments.
Now, the logical solution would be to load the fonts to be used from files included in the distribution package... but I can't find any way to do that! Just creating a Font object doesn't let you choose to take it from a file... but rather from the operating system itself. (Heck, I thought java was supposed to be independent from the OS.) So what do I do now? It would be really nice to be able to write programs that look the same in all environments, without being restricted to using the five (was it five?) standard java fonts...
I'm desperate! This should be an easy problem to solve... with all the wonderful features of the java API there should be an easy way to do this.
    I just can't find it...
Please... help! :) If you know a soultion, you could for example send me an email... at [email protected]
    /Erik (crazy Swede)

you may load the System font list and then check if your GUI fonts are available, or use a predefined index a this list...
    example:
    GraphicsEnvironment ge = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment();
// Thats the OS font list
    String[] fontNames = ge.getAvailableFontFamilyNames();
JComboBox fontList = new JComboBox(fontNames);hint: the Serif and Roman fonts are JVM native ones... and you may use them at any OS...

  • Error while running Java application using Crystal Reports 2011

    Hello,
I would like to ask for your help.
    Environment details:
Java based standalone application in Development environment.
Crystal Reports 2011 (no SP applied)
    Oracle 11g ( 32 bit client installed)
    Win7 64 bit OS.
    Workflow:
While running the java application, which will display the reports I am getting the below mentioned error. I guess that is because I am missing the Crystal runtimes (Correct me if I am wrong).
I know that CR2011 do not have any sdks/ jar available for deployment. In this case, which runtimes should I be using? Does installing CR2011 be enough in the development box?
Please provide me the link from which I can download the same.
Let me know if I need to provide more details on this. Any suggestions are most welcome.
    Thank You.

  • APEX application integration into Java application

    Hello,
I'm working on a new APEX application and I would like to integrate that application into an existing Java application.
The integration should be invisible for the end-users. Our application will have the same look and feel as the Java application.
The existing menu of the Java app will be extended with a new link. This link will then call our application.
Visually I was thinking about using an Iframe to display the content of the APEX application inside the Java generated xHTML.
This is however not the biggest issue.
We are working in a secure context and we thus need to make sure that our APEX application doesn't create a backdoor on the
security mechanism provided by the Java app.
Some options have come to mind, but the one that look best is this:
We keep the java application as the single point of entry for our end-users and make sure that the apex application is "hidden".
We could do this by means of some re-routing code in the java application so that the incomming requests there are send to the correct server (java or apex).
Then we will need to capture the response of the APEX application and place it inside the Java generated xHTML. The combined content is then send to the client.
Or we could place a reverse proxy server that does this for us.
The goal is thus that we can rely on the existing java application to cover the security and the navigation structure.
    Any ideas on this ?
    How-to's or other options ?
    thanks & regards
    Karel

  • How to let users run your Java application

    Hello,
I'm writing an application using JBuilder7 and it's wonderful designer: so far it is composed by only 2 class and imports java.awt.* and javax.swing.* (SDK 1.4)
Now, I've yet to finish it but I was wondering: "how will users be able to use it?"
I don't want them to install 30+ Mb of SDK so I've looked into the forums and elsewhere and come up with several answers:
    1) Let them install JRE: but it's 10+ Mb and they would need to download it separately from my program.
    2) Let them use somehow their browser's JVM..(should I turn my application into applet for this? I guess so)
    3) Make an .exe: I know there are many programs to make .exe from java but they would make a one-platform-based file.
Also there were many hints about using .jar files to get things easier.
Is there a 4th option in which users have to download only a few mbs to use the application?
And about .jar, how should I use it?
Thank you very much for all your help :)

Simply put - the users must download or be supplied the JRE. This must be installed before they can execute your java application.
As to distributing the application itself - You can jar (Java Archive) your classes into a single file.
You could as has been suggested create an EXE, but these generally are very large and tend to severely restrict the range of java technologies able to be used (EG Serialization, RMI, Reflection, class loading, ...)
Java is not intended for little tools that get installed separately - It is intended for larger applications or small applets in which case the download of the JRE is a minor concern.
Note that applets targeting Java 1.1.7 functionality work fine with most old browsers inbuilt JVMs - Your customers browser may not however have an inbuilt JVM and the user will still need to download the JRE to execute a SWING based applets.

  • How to get Portal user from a standalone Java application

    Hi,
I have a standalone Java application from where I need to fetch the Portal User Information like userid and email id.
I am using the below line of code
    iUser = UMFactory.getUserFactory().getUserByLogonID("e017939");
I have included the jar file com.sap.security.api , But it was giving me the below exception
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sap/tc/logging/Location
         at com.sap.security.api.UMFactory.<clinit>(UMFactory.java:55)
         at com.am.wcas.java.mailscheduler.kmaccess.FetchDataFromKM.getiUser(FetchDataFromKM.java:29)
         at com.am.ScheduleEmails.main(ScheduleEmails.java:89)
and I am getting a pop Up message from the Java Virtual Machine Launcher, saying a Fatal Exception has occured and the Program will exit.
Then I went throught he SDN threads and they asked me to include the
    logging.jar and com.sap.security.perm.api .
I Included them, then also, it is giving me Exception
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sap/engine/lib/logging/LoggingHelper
         at com.sap.security.api.UMFactory.<clinit>(UMFactory.java:56)
         at com.am.FetchKMData.main(FetchKMData.java:30)
    Exception in thread "main"
and I am getting a pop Up message from the Java Virtual Machine Launcher, saying a Fatal Exception has occured and the Program will exit.
Kindly let me know if it is possible to access the User info using UMFactory in a standalone Java application. If yes kindly let me know where i am going wrong.
    Regards,
    Shilpa B.V

    Hi Shilpa,
    1. Check that you have added com.sap.security.api within the Your Project>Libraries folder (under navigation tab) and also added jars in the build path of the Your Project under project>properties>Build Path.
    2. In case you have a DC instead of Web Dynpro Project then you have to add the com.sap.security.api under Your DC>Used DCs and have compile time and runtime dependency added.
Here java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError is caused basically due to only build time dependency added and reference to the jar missing at runtime. Rest the code to retrieve the current user id using UME API and getUserByLogOnID("....") method with/without portal environment would not be an issue at all.

  • Web Application and Java Application

    Hello,
I have a standalone Java application and a web application (JSP/Servlets) that I would like integrate. The standalone app. should send some information to my web app (which is not a problem), but then the user can be at this web app. for a while and then once he sees something he likes here, he can select it which should take him BACK to the standalone application. My question is whether something like this is possible?
If so, then how do i do it.
Also the web app and the standalone app run to 2 separate machines and 2 different JVM's.
Any kind of help will be great.
    Thanks

Well let me describe the scenario in detail
We have a standalone java application that is good to search for data across an enterprise database. We also have another application which is web based and uses jsp's and servlets and is good for displaying data in different ways, let's say different kind of graps. Now the user will typically search for something using the standalone application and once he finds what he is looking for, then he might say that he wants to graph the selected data using this web application. Now this part is not too difficult as the standalone app can simply POST the selected information to the web app and the web app can then plot the graph. However, the tricky part is that this web application has the capability to allow the user to select let's say a bar and then get additional info. on that bar. Now to get this additional info. the web app. must contact the standalone app and tell it what bar was selected to get the additional info.
so my concern is how does the web app contact the standalone app. or even KNOW about this web app. Also, RMI is pretty flaky and i would much rather use web services to accomplish it. If that is the only way to go that is.
    Hope that helps.
