Disturbing TM deletion behavior after multiple restores

I have found a seriously disturbing (to me, at least) behavior in Time Machine after doing two system restores. Here is the scenario:
November 19: Time Machine has been working fine for months, and I have full weekly backups to June when I first upgraded to Leopard. Call this System 0.
November 20: My hard drive fails.
Later in November: Disk replaced with temporary, smaller hard drive while waiting on warranty replacement of failed drive. Swapped it in and restore from TM, excluding enough files to fit on smaller disk. Everything seems fine; TM is backing up again and old System 0 backups are also still there. Call this state System 1.
Mid-December: Replacement hard drive arrives; I reinstall OS and restore again from TM, using most recent backup of System 1. Call this System 2. I don't immediately restore the files I had sacrificed for the small-disk restore.
Today: notice that new backups aren't being made because TM was off by default. Turn TM on.
An hour later: I notice that the external drive has been cranking awfully hard for a while. I check it out and realize that TM has been DELETING ALL the backups from System 0! I stopped TM while it was most of the way through removing the last System 0 backup. I have now lost all the files that I had "temporarily" sacrificed to fit on the smaller disk.
My first question is, why did this happen? The disk was nowhere near full.
Next question is, when I turn TM back on, will it start deleting the System 1 backups when it finishes removing the System 0 backups?

TM will do a full rather than an incremental backup after a full system restore. that usually requires a lot more space and it will start deleting (without warning) old backups to make room for the new ones. go to system preferences->TM->options and see how much data is included in the backup. is free space on the TM drive bigger than that?
Next question is, when I turn TM back on, will it start deleting the System 1 backups when it finishes removing the System 0 backups?

  • This iPad2 keeps crashing after multiple restore attempts

My iPad2 keeps crashing and going into a reboot.  I have some days where after a restore that it temporarily woks and then days where it won't finish the reboot process. I have tried to reset and restore at least 20 times, but nothing seems to fix the problem.

This kind of behavior typically is a result of corrupt system files... When you say you're restoring... if you are restoring from back up and the problem still persists... then it would appear that the corrupt files are within your back up and the only option left is to restore as a NEW ipad and NOT from a back up.. then you can add all your apps back... YES this will cause app data to reset and/or delete and you will start over for things like games etc... however, i's the only option left to get rid of the corrupt files in that back up...once you restore as new the iPad will pull down a fresh copy of iOS from Apple and place that on the iPad... then putting items back manually will be a true clean install and leave out the corrput system files.

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes after multiple restorations...

It appears that I'm not the only one getting the problem where iTunes tells you to restore the iPod touch multiple times and then stops recognizing that the iPod is not connected. The iPod itself is not responding to the restoration. Once the restoration is complete (the first time) iTunes tells me to restore the iPod. After two or three times, iTunes stops recognizing that the iPod is connected. The iPod itself displays the silver apple that appears when you turn on the device. I've been looking at all the troubleshooting topics and I've tried about everything, with no avail. What do I do now?

  • IPhone 4 keeps rebooting after multiple restores

When it first started, it was jailbroken and I had turned off all data while in Canada.  When I crossed back into the US I made a call and it started rebooting every minute or so until the battery got too low.  I have restored it multiple times without jailbraking but it just keeps rebooting.
First it would not charge past 3% then it charged for a bit but now it is back stuck at 3%.  I am thinking but I am not sure if it is a battery issue.  Anyway to verify this?  Also should it charge when off, or in one of the restore modes?

I even have the same problem. After searching the web for long what i now know is that Apple knows this problem. I have even read in some posts that apple replaced the iphones for couple of people. There are even videos on you tube about the same issue we are suffering with. But the bad part is that despite apple knowing this issue they are not addressing or even replying to individuals like me and you for the way forward. I this case you are lucky that you stay in USA and could be having Apple store just next to you but i am in a real mess here in Kenya. As i will have to travel 400km to have the phone repaired or replace the phone.

  • 4G iPod Touch - All Apps crashing after multiple restores overtime

I don't know what to do anymore - I don't even care that my 32 GB iPod touch works like an old school mini iPod anymore. I just want my music and kindle apps to work. Just two apps. Everything is always crashing. Forget about browsing any information on Safari or using any kind of social media app. I can't even do Google Maps - ha! Basically, I've restored multiple times over the last couple of months now. I have researched high and low and don't know what to do anymore.
For one, this is annoying because not only do I have to back up my photos, I have to put all my music back on again and the information in some apps does not transfer. A fresh restore is not fun. Restoring from backup doesn't seem to help either.
And yes, I am on iOS6 and I strongly believe it has to do with this. Ever since this update all has let loose. And the touch users got shafted.
Do any of you deal with this?

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (not from backup) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Persistant, song skipping and random reboot - after multiple restores

My iPod is skipping songs that should work and also restarting at random when trying to play music. This has been going on for a while but now happens too often to ignore.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26488?viewlocale=en_US
I've followed everything on this troubleshoot.
-I'm using the latest version of iTunes
-My ipod is 120gb Classic, 2 years old. It previously held around 15,000 tracks but while trying to fix it, I only sync about 300 tracks.
    -My files are not corrupted
-I've checked the bitrates and format, they should play without issue
-My iPod is stationary on my desk
-I've used 2 different USB cables and tryed syncing on multiple ports
-I've used resets, restores, and even used windows to reformat the drive
So where do I go from here? I'm not sure about my warranty, but if I take this in to an apple store will they solve this for me anyway?
I also want to ask if an ipod can actually handle my 15k song collection since the problem seems to get worse the more songs I add.
Ipods are advertised as being able to handle this amount of music but in general I find my ipod runs very slowly with this amount of music.

Does anyone have any advice? Please, I'm at my wits end here.

None of my reports are working and every time I publish I get a reporting queue error on the projects.
Your urgent help to sort this issue out will be highly appreciated
    Thanks

    Hello,
What was the queue error? Have you tried the restore of custom fields again?

  • After I restored my iPhone, all my apps got deleted. What now?

Earlier today, I connected my iPhone to iTunes via USB and was prompted to restore my iPhone before I could disconnect. So I proceeded and after the process was finished, I retrieved my music and photo files from the back-up. _**Now to get to my point:**_ after I restored the iPhone, all of my applications got deleted, including the one I purchased. Is there any way I can retrieve them back, or do I have to install each one manually? What about the ones I bought? Is there any way I can get those back without having to buy it again?

This link provides the data included with your iPhone's backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
The backup does not include any iTunes content - music, podcasts, video, or 3rd party apps. All iTunes content including 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer. After downloading/installing an app with your iPhone, the app should be transferred to your iTunes library on your computer the first time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so.
You can re-download an app with iTunes on your computer and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally.

  • Need inputs on RMAN Backup n Recovery for multiple restore of clean backup

I will explain my scenario below:
We have the requirement of performance testing of our proposed production platform, for this i am asked to take RMAN backup of clean position (Say Day0 or baseline backup) and restore it multiple times for few rounds of testing. My question is after 1st restore (with set until time of day0 position) if i open the database with resetlogs, would i be able to restore same clean backup again? I am using control file in the environment instead of RMAN catalog database. What i can do to make this scenario work? I am already in preperation of setting rman catalog database.
Please suggest me the best way forward...

  • Time Machine forces a Full backup  (173GB) after System restore.

    Hi,
Just restored my system from the latest backup in Time Capsule. Now Time Machine want to backup the whole disk again (173GB) although the changes between the current status and the latest backup should be minimal.
Is this the normal behavior?, I would rather avoid the full back up if there any way to do it.
These are the logs. First it says that the "Event Store UUIDs don't match". I'm not sure this is really normal, because I didn't swap hard drives or anything so I assume that the Event Store UUIDs should match.
Then it says that the size of the backup is 173.86 GB.

Not quite the same problem, as your full backup wasn't the first one after a full restore. Whether it's related or not is anybody's guess.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here. They may contain a clue.

Please post the HP product number for your PC. How to Find the HP Model Number and the HP Product Number or let HP automatically find your PC model number and HP network attached printers. This will allow others to review your issue, make suggestions and review your responses. This is usually the best way to get assistance.
If you search the Internet you will find numerous posts and suggestions that describe your situation with many, many different suggestions and possible solutions.  You will find pages and pages of suggestions that may or may not solve your problem. There isn't any one time cure all suggestion based on your symptom description.   You might want to try a few suggestions and see if you get lucky.
You may need to separate the "wheat from the chaff"  (hardware issues from software issues) or you might be chasing the issue for many, many hours.
I have seen hardware failures produce similar issues.  You might try running diagnostics for 1-2 hours and see if the diagnostics will detect an issue.  Even hardware diagnostics are not a cure all solution for possible hardware issues.
If you can roll your PC back to a known good Windows restore point before the issue started then give that a try.  Otherwise back up your data to external media and use the external HP recovery media to bring your PC back to a factory day one condition. Then without loading a lot of software add ons, try some multiple browsing for the time period that the issue typically occurs.

My son forgot his passcode so I had to restore his ipod touch, 2nd gen.  After the restore, many of his apps no longer work.  He had Netflix, Facebook, Angry Birds.  They now all say they require ios 4.3 or 5.0.  Does anyone know how to get these apps back on his ipod?  thanks!

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.
