Divide button in pathfinder palette

Help me out pls someone...
I'm following a tutorial and it says:
Step 67
When you're done, lock your remaining layers, then select both "nine"
paths by clicking the circle icon (to the immediate right of its name).
Now choose Object > Expand Appearance, then click the Divide button
in the Pathfinder palette.
I did that and then
Step 68
To get rid of the unnecessary shapes produced by the Divide command,
select them with the Direct Selection Tool (A) and hit Delete.
To combine separate shapes of the same color into a single path,
first ensure your other layers are locked, then select a red area. Now
go to Select > Same > Fill Color, then choose Make Compound Shape
and hit the Expand button in the Pathfinder palette.
Finally, select all the yellow areas and repeat the Compound Shape/Expand commands.
This is where I got lost, can someone pls show me the "uneccesary shapes" that were divided? I can't identify them, here is a link to the ai file.

Ok, I worked a bit with your file. When I was done, I didn't see any unnecessary shapes either. But working on the alignment should get you the result you want.

Pathfinder Divide and white lines

Hi guys,
just 2 questions
1 - I did a simple illustration by constructing eyes with circles and croping areas with Divide tool in the Pathfinder Palette.

Nevertheless, when i imported to Indesign or when i take a closer look i see a white line. I do select the whole drawing by the EXPAND button is no available.
Could you please let me know how to get rid of this white line stroke?
2 - Why InDesign or Illustration screen artwork always looks sharp and crisp and when exporting to PDF there is like a "bolder" thicker font look? Specially when watching the the artwork at full screen.

1) Regarding question one, OK great tip! I did add to shape and all funny business on path dissapeared.
2) Regarding question two, when you say "PDF setting for screen" are you talking about Acrobat Reader or Professional? I have Mac OSX and my default PDF viewer is Preview which doesn't have those setting.

Issue with Illustrator Pathfinder Divide tool

Having a strange issue I've never encountered before with the divide tool in Illustrator. I use this all the time and it's never caused me any issues until I upgraded to CS6.

What I would like to do, and have done before, is to simply divid a shape using the path of a line. It should divide the shape right along the line path resulting in two shapes that are grouped together without the anchorpoints moving and changing the shape size. What's happening now when I do it is that the main shape changes form when divided and the achorpoints are moving around, resulting in two shapes that really don't 'fit' back together without tweaking the achorpoints. I mine as well create two seperate shapes and eyeball where the achorpoints should match.
In the video I just showed you what one line is doing. When I do them all it's an absolute mess. I've done this before many times and it's always worked out perfectly—not sure what is going on. I initially though I could of had 'snap to point' or 'snap to grid on' which would cause the anchor points to shift after being divided. All those options are turned off and it's still doing it.
Has anyone encountering this issue or know why it may be happening? I've tried restarting my computer to see if it was just being glitchy, but the same issue keep happening.

I know this string is out of date, but I started having the same issue after upgrading to CS6. I unchecked the "Align to Pixel Grid" box in the Pathfinder palette, and changed the document color mode from RGB to CMYK... I even created a new document and was still having issues. After repeating this process a couple of times, thinking I was doing everything right, HERE'S where I found the issue..
When creating a new document, make sure you click on "Advanced" options in the "New Document" box...
Make sure your Color Mode is CMYK (mine was RGB... and that's why that little yellow warning is there)
Select what every PPI you need
and UNCHECK the "Align New Objects to Pixel Grid" (this is the IMPORTANT part... you can't get to it AFTER you click "OK")
Now you're ready and won't have those irritating issues with Pathfinder! Yeeesh!

How to divide brush strokes?

Hi everybody,
I have no problem dividing objects using the "divide" tool in the Pathfinder palette, but I was wondering if there was a way to divide brush strokes?
For example, let's say you wanted to paint three brush strokes right next to each other, but not overlapping. Is there a way to select all three strokes and then divide them so no one stroke resides over another, they would be completely separate of each other.
The divide tool only works with objects, or so it seems.

Here's another pic. I created a path outline using the pencil, then clicked on the "draw inside" button to colorize it with three different colors. As it is, the colors overlap, but I'm looking for a way to select these three different colors and separate them so they no longer overlap.
Is this possible?

Shape modes Expand button not functioning

Just installed CS4.
When I merge object using the shape modes line in the Pathfinder palette the objects are not dynamically merged but rather merged as when I use the 'Merge' command from the 'pathfinders' line.
This means the button 'expand' is not functioning either since the objects are already expanded automatically.
Does anyone have the same problem and is this a bug or am I missing something?

And I was not arguing with your preference. (I don't share it, but you're enttitled to it.) You said Add To Shape and Merge do the same thing:

They don't, and so the presence of both of them is not silly.
You seem to think that the Shape Mode buttons are supposed to be just "live" versions of the Pathfinder buttons. They aren't. The Shape Modes are four basic set operations (union, subtract, intersection, difference), and can be applied as live or not. The Pathfinders are
additional operations (each with its own set of sometimes bizarre behavioral caveats), and cannot be applied as live effects.
But their being able to be applied as live effects, and whether live or expanded is default is immaterial as to whether one is superfluous or not.
Merge Pathfinder is NOT the same thing as Add To Shape Area expanded. The two only happen to result in the same thing under the special circumstance of same-filled unstroked paths. Merge (its inability to handle strokes notwithstanding) is an important path operation for things very different from the purpose of Add To Shape Area.

InDesign Palettes not working

Hello fellow graphic junkies,
I have a big problem. I am using Adobe InDesign CS5 on windows 7 and have been using it just fine for a long time now. Just today it started having problems. When I open a file everything looks correct and works fine, until I try to push a button on any of the palettes or control panel. The palette titles; ie. Pages, Layers, Links can all be pushed to open up the palette however the buttons in the palette do not work. In fact the weirdest part is that the buttons on the control panel can be pressed but they are off by inches, so I try to change the kerning and the font menu drops down instead however only the control panel buttons and cursor buttons can be pushed. Everything else works, dragging images, writing new copy, drop down menus like File and Edit, clicking cursors or gradients from the cursor palette. I have updated it, re-installed it, and nothing is working. Could this be a plug-in problem with Suitcase Fusion? Is it something crazy like Java or an error with windows itself?

Why can't we have "show cookies" menu be a button in the new drop down menu on FF29 ?

I see the new Firefox 29 has a drop down menu in the upper right corner, with various shortcut symbols. One of them is "preferences", but I would like to make that to be have an even shorter shortcut to "show cookies", instead of having it buried in several clicks as in the old versions of FF.

[JS][CS3] Method failing in palette

Hi,
Although I experience the problem in Illustrator CS/Win, I suspect someone might have been through a similar problem in InD, and it might expose some sort of bug. I seek to either have such a bug confirmed or grasp a solution. That's why I'm posting also on this forum.
I wrote a method to check whether the active document's selection is exactly two vertical guides, and it works well when isolated, run from either Scripts menu or from ESTK. But once attached this method to a button in ScriptUI palette, it continuously fails to do its job. Again, it works OK from a modal dialog (which however is not a solution to me, since it does not allow interaction).
It claims that "there is no document", although it is there and has the expected selection. I tried a whole bunch of try/catch, if'fing tests, referring to activeDocument as well as documents[x], passing a ready-to-use docref, repeating the #target directive, restarting Ai/ESTK, but it stubbornly claims there is no document.
Anyone having a workaround? It's a showstopper :( I have to stick with palette type of window. :(

Yes, Dave, I do this kind of debug all the time, writing either to console or showing alerts, but what good does it when you see that there IS a document but an alert shows that you fell into if(!app.activeDocument) ?
Try to attach to a button any function referring to a selection, for instance: returning width of the selected object. Try both types of window frame: 'dialog' and 'palette'. I'd be curious what results you'd get.
Unless I'm doing something wrong, I think there might be some problem with window layering.

Problem with Illustrator cs5 pathfinder

Hi,
I'm fairly new to illustrator and am having a problem using the crop command in the pathfinder; I'm trying to make a pattern swatch but when I try to crop out the parts of the design which overlap the rectangle, I'm finding it sometimes works but most of the time I'm getting the result shown in the second picture, where it has cropped but removed the fills - I've made sure I'm pressing the crop icon.
My process for the above is:
select blue square
copy and paste in front to get an exact match of square
select arrange and bring to front
remove square's fill and stroke
select all
press crop button in pathfinder
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? All help would be greatly appreciated!

The largest blue square is at the back, two other shapes next, then an empty rectangle same size as big square is at top of stack to form crop boundaries.

[JS CS3] Conflict between palettes and panels

Hello,
I am having a conflict between panels and palettes. Hopefully I can get some direction without having to copy the code here, because it is very long.
I have a window of the palette type. This palette has buttons and radio buttons. The buttons call up various functions.
The radio buttons, however, make visible/invisible a series of panels in the palette. The panels are stacked upon each other, only one of which is visible at any one time, depending upon which radio button is selected.
One of the buttons in the palette calls up another palette (which also has a series of buttons for various functions). Let's call it the little palette. The problem is, that after the little palette is called up, the radio buttons in the big palette no longer work. I can select them but they will not make visible/invisible any of the stacked panels. The buttons in the visible panel work as well as all the other buttons that are always visible. The only thing that does not work are the radio buttons.
My only workaround is to just dismiss the palette and call it up again. But I'd rather fix this bug.
Any ideas? If I need to I can strip down the coding leaving only the essentials, but rather not take the time if this is a problem others have run into and hopefully have a solution for.

Thanks. I'll give it a try, but I even uninstalled both programs, tried
reinstalling Reader only, and when that didn't work, uninstalled Reader and
then reinstalled Acrobat. Still a problem. The particular website is
www.officeally.com, and it opens the PDF file in a browser window, I believe
using an ASP file.

Boolean operations on paths al la AI Pathfinder toolset

New to flash but wanted to tween some animation paths so thought I'd try it out. Is there an equivilent set of operations to AI's Pathfinder palette. I'm after the Subtract Front Object from Back Object function on paths? (Obviously) I can do in AI and bring into Flash but easier to stay in one app.

But your response made me realize that the problem did, indeed, have to do with code that was running during the upload. I isolated the problem to the progress bar logic, which I suspect is not a coding error, but just too many cycles for the player to put up with during a long upload. I am now searching for another method of displaying upload status without a tight piece of code that loops a lot.

Email submit button does nothing

I've added the button to a dynamic form, and I gave it a caption and a target email address and a subject. When I click on it the Object pallate's Caption field may or may not be grayed out, unless I right-click on the button and select Palettes>Object. When I click on the green Caption link the Dynamic Properties dialog box offers only Default Data Binding as the Data Connection, and the Binding field only offers None. Is this normal?
When I test the form in Reader 8, nothing happens. Am I missing something obvious here?

Solution: There was no application selected as the default email app in the Internet Explorer options.

Most icons missing from control/functions palette

I've seen the following on several (at least three, AFAIR) different installations of LV8.5 or 8.5.1 on different machines. I'm surprised not to find something that inconvenient not yet reported on the discussion forums or the knowledge base.
If in Tools/Options/Control/functions palette I choose "Icons" for format, which I like best, I end up with a control palette showing only 4 buttons, namely Express, User controls, Select a control... and Vision, and a lot of blank space. Similarly, the Controls palette shows only Express, Favorites, Select a vi... and User libraries. If I use format:tree or format:text, I see the same four items as well. The tagging of "load palettes" doesn't seem to have any effect on this.
Instead, all the functions and controls I expect to see, are on the system and show up in submenus only if I choose format: category. However, and this might be the key point, the category menu is shown initially as "abridged", with a >> mark at bottom. As I right-click pop it open, only the said four items are shown, a click on the continuation mark opens up all. I couldn't find, though, any obvious Options setting related to this behavior.

I have not tried to reinstall LV, first for the time it takes, second because having seen the problem on many installations I doubt that all of them could have gone bad in the same way (while LV apparently works sanely). Uff, I found myself. Please ignore the request.
However, I find that it was not at all trivial. Searching the help for "abridged", I've found that:
"By default, LabVIEW installs with an abridged palette view, unless you are upgrading and were using the Advanced palette view in a previous version of LabVIEW. You can use the View button to display or hide palette categories."
(upgrading was the case on the systems in question). Following links for "Change Visible Categories Dialog Box" I learned that
"On a pinned palette, click the View button on the palette toolbar and select Change Visible Categories from the shortcut menu to display the Change Visible Categories dialog box. This dialog box lists all categories on the Controls or Functions palette"
That is, one has to pin the palette first, then press view, then etc. etc. It was not immediate to me.

Memory Retrieve and Memory Clear don't need an input--that's probably why you are getting the exception--you are probably parsing an empty string.
As CeciNEstPasUnProgrammeur said, you should print the stack trace.

Buttons in DSP 4.0.3

Has anyone experienced a problem in DSP 4.0.3 where they can not add buttons to a project?
In previous versions, you just held down the mouse and click on the Menu canvas or drag the button from the palette to create a button.
I've installed the latest updates and deleted the preferences file but still I can not create a simple button.
If anyone has a workaround, I'd greatly appreciate any help.

After trying diferent solutions we discovered that all this upgrading and reinstalling does not work.
There is definately some conflict with the OS.
The only tested solution is a clean install of the OS 10
I managed to run DSP with no trouble after rebooting from an external HD.
That was the only solution. we even tried turning off running processes after reboot with the normal OS and nothing helped.
If you have an alternate system on your computer give it a try and see that it works. There is no need to reinstall DSP.
