Divx 6 breaks Flip4Mac WMVPlayer

Anyone else experience that the Divx 6 codec seems to break WMVPlayer's ability to playback .wmv files in QuickTime Player (Pro)?
- Craig

I can confirm that Divx 6 does indeed break Flip4Mac, but only for a certain type of WMV video media.
If the WMV file was encoded with Microsoft's old MS-MPEGv3 codec (aka Divx 3), Flip4Mac chokes on it with Divx 6 installed. Apparently, codecs that are ordinarily designed to playback Divx 3, 4, 5, and 6 video in regular avi files also get involved with Flip4Mac when they sense a compatible codec present in a WMV file when Flip4Mac decodes it Quicktime, as if they were joining Flip4Mac in the decoding chores. If the WMV file was encoded with regular WMV 7, 8, or 9 codecs, Divx codecs don't get involved and Flip4Mac will playback those files fine even with Divx 6 present.
Other codecs designed to play Divx video don't exhibit this problem when installed with with Flip4Mac, including FFusion, 3ivx, and oddly enough, the recent Divx Fusion beta 3. They will still get involved in the decoding process when they sense a Divx codec present in a WMV file, but work just fine with Flip4Mac. You would never know unless you looked at Quicktime's get info screen to see the actual video codec being used. Only the official Divx 6 breaks it, and again, just for older Divx 3 encoded WMV files.
So the solution for now is to get rid of Divx 6, and reinstall Divx Fusion beta 3 if you still have it, or install FFusion and/or 3ivx D4 4.5.1 for avi playback, although with the last two, there's a good chance avi movies will have no sound, unfortunately. (A long standing Quicktime bug for decoding mpeg layer 3 movie sound, which the majority of avi's have). Divx Doctor II comes to the rescue and fixes that in almost all cases. Or you can use dependable VLC for Divx avi file playback.
Until either Divx or Flip4Mac cries uncle and fixes the conflict, that is.

  • Can not open PDF's in Safari

    Hi All:
I know this has been asked and answered so many time that I am sorry to post again. However, I have read many of the prior posts, tired the fixes, and still the problem persists. All of a sudden, without any erxplanation I know of, PDF links do not open within Safari, as in the past, but instead revert to the Downloads and open in Preview.
    MacBook Pro OS: 10.6.8
    Safari: 5.1.7
I have two other accounts set up and they both open PDF links within Safari.
I have downloaded Adobe Reader again, checked my plugins. I can’t locate any Adobe plugins on either my home account or hard drive, restarted, etc.
If possible, can someone try and offer assistance. It's one of those things which is bugging me and have been struggling with for the past three hours.
    thank you.

    Hi Linc:
You and Carolyn seem to tbe the go to  people for this issue.
When I pull up the plug0ins from the Help Menu, I get an entire page. I've tried copying it below.
What really confuses me is that it works fine in my other accounts and I can't determine what is different in this account.
    thanks,
    val

  • Freezing with iTunes 7.6.1, thumping sound, especially during video playback

    Hi,
Has anyone noticed a decrease in system reliability after upgrading to iTunes 7.6.1, especially during video/videopodcast playback in iTunes on their MacBook Pro's?
Specifically, the entire system locks up. Reminds me of the days of OS 7.5.5 when the mouse cursor freezes, keyboard stops responding. The only way to proceed is by holding down the power button.
This has occurred about 4 times now. The trackpad will become unresponsive, keyboard buttons such as caplocks and nu lock will be unresponsive too. Most interesting is that the sound output will loop, usually a short bit of the last audio played back over iTunes.
    Videos which have triggered this:
    - Podcast: Diggnation
    - Podcast: ABC World News Now
    - YouTube video's converted by Tooble
Here's a video I recorded showing the thumping noise. It sounds like the last audio dump before the crash looped. It's not coming from the hard drive. Definitely from the speakers.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzOCcINoClg
In the video you see I had World of Warcraft up, but I don't think it is the problem, because this kind of crash has occurred while using other programs.
    Details:
    iTunes 7.6.1
    QuickTime 7.4.1
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
    2.2 Ghz (MacBookPro3,1)
    4GB RAM
External second monitor attached: eMachines 15" LCD
Prefrence panes additions: Application Enhancer, Divx, FinderPop, Flip4Mac WMV, Perian, Teleport, WindowShade X.
Have NOT installed Security Update 2008-001 OR AirPort Utility 5.3.1 pending user problem reports.
I never had such a complete system freeze until about the time I updated to iTunes 7.6.1. Repaired disk, permissions, cleaned up virtual memory, cache's using AppleJack.
Thanks, just want to see if this is an isolated problem.

First, create a new user account and see if you can replicate the problem on that account.
If so, start by killing all the running daemons that aren't OS X-native apps. In other words, Window Shade X, Application Enhancer, divx, etc. Quit all that junk and use Activity Monitor to make sure those apps aren't running background tasks. I'd be willing to bet that Application Enhancer is the culprit.
See if that solves the problem. If so, you can add the applications back one by one until you find the one that's causing problems.

  • Safari 4.0 - Quicktime Plug-In Issue

    Hey Everyone,
Hoping that I might be able to get a little bit of help here. Safari 4.0 is almost running fine for me. The only problem that I have is playing any Quicktime movie. Trailers, Keynote, etc. Whenever I try, I get the following message:
The page “Apple - Movie Trailers - Shutter Island” attempted to load an Internet plug-in named “QuickTime Plug-In 7.6.2”, but the plug-in failed to load successfully.
I deleted the quicktime plug-in and web plug-in from my library, and tried again, but was requested to install Quicktime. I reinstalled QT but then got the same error. I tried deleting the divx and flip4mac plug-ins also, but again... no success.
    Can someone please help?

No dice... opens up the new window and here's the answer I get...
The page “http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Movies/dave.mov” attempted to load an Internet plug-in named “QuickTime Plug-In 7.6.2”, but the plug-in failed to load successfully.
    Same problem as always!

  • This computer is not authorized to play "mzm.sggausza..640x454.h264lc.cd2.p.m4v"

Keep getting this message every time I try to view a trailer from iTunes. I have been to 'Store' then 'Authorise this computer' and it tells me 'this computer is already authorised' so why can I not view movie trailers?

Same problem. I went on a shopping spree and downloaded some TV shows, left them downloading overnight. Next day I go to play them and iTunes claims the computer is not authorized (which it is), I input my password, then it tells me it was already authorized along with my other computer.
The video then comes up grey with no sound. The timeline runs but that's about it. Ironically though, I can play it through my iPhone after a synch.
    Here's an image walkthrough:
    http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/3927/itunesgreyissue.jpg
I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest quicktime. Did the same for iTunes after a restart (complete with deleting the com.apple.itunes files on the library. I also got rid of every video plugin I have such as DivX and Flip4Mac.
    Nothing fixes the issue.

  • This computer is not authorized to play filename .m4v

    Hey all,
    First post so be gentle.
I've attempted several times now to play my downloaded tv episodes from within itunes. When I click to play them I get a message saying "This computer is not authorized to play <filename>.m4v"
It then gives me an option to open itunes and wait for authorization. I wait and nothing happens. I just get a blank grey screen while the episode 'plays' in itunes. ( I say plays because I see the seconds and minutes counting down on the episode. I just don't hear or see anything, just a grey screen.
I've never really had issues in the past with itunes and videos, but admittedly I've not purchased any in a while. The music plays fine, it is only the videos that are bugging out on me.
    So far I've tried:
-Unauthorizing and Reauthorizing my itunes. ( Can't unauthorize all machines since I'm still in the year timeframe )
-Upgrading Quicktime from 7.5.5 to 7.6
    -Repairing Disk Permissions
    -Steps in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389
    -Upgrading my video card drivers.
    -Upgrading itunes
    Any other ideas?

  • Video playback in mixed (video and music) playlists

How can I set a video playlist to play both the songs and the videos (not just the audio from the video)? My 5G ipod would allow both video playback and songs from the video playlist menu. On my 160g classic, I only see/play the videos on the mixed playlists from the video playlist menu.

The 3ivX codec is in your quicktime library folder, normally: root/Library/QuickTime, but I don't think, that Apple encodes their movies with an unsupported codec. Maybe there is another unsupported codec in your library that creates the iTunes-stuttering or the reason for your problem is completely different. I paste here the content of my library folder. If you have anything else in your folder, quit Quicktime Player and iTunes (if they are running) , remove the plug-in and try your movie again in iTunes. Hope, this helps.

  • Avi files in Quicktime and finder

My machine (finder & Quicktime Pro 7) no longer recognises any of my avi files. I recently made system updates to Safari(3.1.1) and Quicktime (7.4.5), plus the usual automatic security updates, but I can't say for sure when the problem occurred within the last 2 weeks, as they were all fine until then. I have also updated Perian (1.1)and have DivX and Flip4Mac codecs installed.
I can play them through VLC, but not through Quicktime or in the finder
Any help would be much appreciated

Yes quicktime player will no longer play the files and what I mean by "playing in the finder" Is that previously when in column view, I could single click on an avi file which would give me a small preview version which could be played directly in the finder window, the same way you can play an mp3 file in the finder without double clicking it and opening itunes.
Again, this only works in column view. It seems to me that whatever it is preventing the finder recognising the files is the same thing preventing quicktime player from playing them as they must both use the same elements.

  • Apple tv conversion problems

How do i enable the create  apple tv version buttons in advanced settings of movies so i can convert my files to apple format?

when I use FFMPEGX to convert some AVI files to H264 it is writing the audio and video as seperate files
Sounds like FFMPEG is doing this. Check the source codecs and/or your default/manual settings. Some conversions may require an intermediate conversion in which the audio and video are first "demuxed" and placed in separate files which are them converted to the final compression formats and then merged to a single file.
Secondly, If I try to use Quicktime, Flip4mac writes that it was done with a trial version all over the video output, but I have the Pro Version of Quicktime so can't understand why it uses flip4mac at all, isnt Quicktime supposed to do this by itself, and is there a way round this, short of buying flip4mac?
While QT recognizes the AVI file container (i.e., AVI is not a compression format), you must have the same codecs to make the file (many combinations are possible) playable and/or convertible to a fully supported QT compression format. QT does not supply proprietary interleaved codecs and you must install your own. DivX, Flip4Mac, Perian, etc. all have codecs that play different codecs that may be contained in the AVI container. As long as there are no conflicts, then everything works fine. In some cases, however, two or more components may be able to play/convert the same codec. In this event, QT seems to call the handler which was last installed. If this is the case, then you may be able to remove/re-install codecs in a different order which satisfies your needs. In other cases, the codec in question may only be supplied one of the third-party providers and you have no choice but to use their product. Some of the providers allow you to play the codecs in question but require you to purchase conversion decoders and/or decoders separately. (E.g., DivX and Flip4Mac.) Whether or not you purchase these products depends on how badly you want to convert the file in question.

    So what could be wrong?

1: Check the status of all your plug-ins here and upgrade those out of date
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
2: While your at it, install Firefox and see if your problems continue and in what browser(s)
3: Anything from Google installs a rootkit auto-updater that causes problems, consider using Google Maps instead.
4: Java shouldn't be used at all, Flashback and OS X/Crisses malware depend upon it, Spotlight search for Java Preferences and disable, also in your browser(s) preferences/add-ons.
5: Silverlight is best totally uninstalled and then reinstalled between updates.
6: Uninstall or disable any plug-in your not actively using,  this is hard to do on a individual basis in Safari as it gives a all or nothing option. Use Firefox instead which does.
The purpose is that your more exposed with the more plug-ins you have installed, since any of them can be called up by any website you visit. So to reduce your exposure, you reduce the amount of active plug-ins running on all sites. Consider using Firefox + NoScript as it will disable all scripts, add-ons unless you click on the toolbar button.
7: Don't use any Safari version less than Safari 6, there has been a slew of security fixes in Safari 6 and so far no updates for 10.6 or below, so the malware writers are already getting busy exploiting earlier versions. Over 50% of OS X users are on 10.6 too.  Use another browser that gets timely security updates, Chrome or Firefox if your on 10.6 or below.
With 10.6 now, we are entering the Apple F.U. stage where they start to not giving a dam about us and our security because we didn't upgrade to their crappy 10.7 or 10.8 or can't. Apple only cares about their latest OS version and pays some attention to the last version., only because they are only interested in selling hardware.

  • Video playback in iTunes 7 and 7.0.1: it stutters!

Since I've upgraded to iTunes 7 and now to 7.0.1, all my music videos and tv movies play at 2 (in words: two!) frames per second when played inside iTunes. In Quicktime and also on the iPod (5g) or the TV set with an iPod connected they are playing very fine.
It seems to me that this is a problem with mpg4 because the h264-encoded files play fine in the iTunes application. Is there a workaround to fix this problem? I have over 350 music videos and short fun clips in my iTunes library to synchronize with the iPod and I'll not encode them all again to h264 just because there is a bug in iTunes.
Oh, btw.: At work I use an iMac (Intel) with the same iTunes 7.0.1-library. All the videos (mpg4 or h264) are playing fine there. Maybe Apple is not testing on the G5 anymore?
    Any help or comments appreciated!
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The 3ivX codec is in your quicktime library folder, normally: root/Library/QuickTime, but I don't think, that Apple encodes their movies with an unsupported codec. Maybe there is another unsupported codec in your library that creates the iTunes-stuttering or the reason for your problem is completely different. I paste here the content of my library folder. If you have anything else in your folder, quit Quicktime Player and iTunes (if they are running) , remove the plug-in and try your movie again in iTunes. Hope, this helps.

  • Why am I suddenly seeing pop ups in Chrome and Safari on my MacBook

A couple of weeks ago, I suddenly started seeing pop ups in both my Chrome and Safari browsers. I have pop up ads turned off in both, went so far as to uninstall Chrome and the .dmg for it several times, cleared all histories, cookies, extensions, etc, etc. What's even more maddening is that it happens while just using plain old Google to do a search. I have cleaned out all old pics and documents via Finder that I no longer needed. I have nothing new that has caused this change. So what the heck is happening here??? I have been trying to track this isue down and can't find a solution. Firefox seems to be the only thing unaffected at this point, but I migrated away from Mozilla a long time ago. I've tried searching Google's forums, but the fact it's happening in Safari suggests it's something within my Mac. I've run a virus scan (semi-redundant, I'm aware, but I'm grasping) and all is clear. Do I try a malware search now?

Also, just ran an EtreCheck if this is of any help. The antivirus is AVG that I just installed last week trying to see if anything was there.....

  • Older MacPro running slow--keep it or get newer Mac?

    We have a MacPro, but a little older generation, 2005-6. Processor: 2 x 2 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
I added a second hard drive a few years back, as well as more RAM (though now I can't remember how much! We store all our photo, video and music content on the second drive. The boot disk is the original one that came with the Mac. It is not full, but has about 75 GB free. We have OS 10.6.8 installed on the boot HD, as since it is the original disk it won't accept the latest versions of OS Maverick or whatever is the most recent.
In the past few months, it has started to shut down instead of sleeping. If, however, an internet browser window is open, it will go to screen saver and then the screen will sleep, but not the computer, but the computer won't shut down, either. Basically, if all applications are closed, instead of sleeping, the computer will shut down. It will turn back on with just a key stroke, which is not typical when one does a proper shut down. It's like the key stroke or pushing the power button awakes it from sleep, only it wasn't sleeping, because it goes through the whole "ding" of turning one, apple screen, then sign-in. Does that make sense?
Also, it is running SUPER SLOW. If I have our browser (either Safari or Chrome) open, as well as iTunes or iPhoto, it's even worse.
Basically, my question is this: should we, or CAN we even, try to tidy up the computer we have, possibly replace a hard drive or add more RAM, or would it behoove us to just get a new computer?
We definitely don't need the capacity of a MacPro anymore, as the photo editing and such I was assuming I needed when we originally bought the computer is minimal enough that we don't need that kind of power any more. I'm thinking an iMac or MacBook Pro even would do. We do not do any gaming, just usual internet usage, photo editing (Photoshop), minimal video editing just with the Mac software, and basic word processing/power point type stuff. We are not programmers, professional photograpers or videographers.
I would *like* to salvage our computer, as I feel it has space available (empty drive bays) that we are not currently using, probably is just a little old and needs a clean-up. I back things up to our Time Machine often, have minimal desktop icons, clean out the caches, basic maintenance. I'm not a knowledgeable enough computer person to do much more. Is it worth trying to salvage it? When I contacted the Apple store a while back about checking it out they basically laughed at me and asked why I still had such a dinosaur. I HATE thinking that it's becoming necessary to chuck out a computer every 5-8 years and buy a new one, especially when it's one that has been designed to expand. But perhaps that's naïve. I don't want to waste time if it's hopeless, and am not opposed to buying a new machine if need be. BUT, I am philosophically opposed to chucking out something that can be spruced up.
Opinions? Recommendations? Please keep in mind we are novices, so tech talk often goes over my head. The most tech I've done is installed the second hard drive and extra RAM.
    Thanks.
