DIY Machine Spec Approval

My plan is to build my next PC myself (first time!). Here's what I've picked.
I know there are some sticky notes on machine specs, but I can't seem to find them.
I currently use Premeire Elements 7 for SD editing. But I'd like to make sure my machine will be somewhat future-proof and allow HD AVCHD editing with PRE10 - I can definitely see that coming. Maybe even if I win the lotto one day, I'd like to do HD AVCHD editing with Premiere Pro, maybe even using a Mercury-supported CUDA card.
CPU: Intel i7-2600
Mobo: Asus P8H67-V (4 Dual Channel slots of DDR3 1333/1066, (4) SATA 3GB HD, (2) SATA 6GB HD, UEFI BIOS)
PS: Seasonic M12II 520 (520 Watts)
CPU Fan: CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus
Memory: Crucial 16GB ("Ballistic Sport", DDR3 SDRAM 1600), 2 x 8GB, Dual Channel
Video Card: None - I'll use the CPU's built-in graphics - I heard they're supposed to be pretty good
OS: Win7 64-bit
HD1: WD Caviar Black 500GB SATA 6GB 7200RPM
HD2: WB 1TB SATA 3GB 7200 RPM
HD3: WB 1TB SATA 3GB 7200 RPM
RAID: The mobo supports SATA RAID 0/1/5/10, but I don't have any plans to do RAID right now.
One thing that seems odd is the memory: I've picked the Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (#BLS2KIT8G3D1609DS1S00), which is $150 for 2x8GB DDR3. However, its speed is 1600 but my mobo only supports 1333/1066... that's OK, right? If I pick Crucial memory that matches my 1333 mobo speed, that would would be #CT102464BA1339 - but at $99 for 8GB, that would be $200 for 16GB whereas the Ballistix is only $150. Why is the slower memory more expensive? Is there something about the Ballistix memory I should know?
Also, my plan eliminates the possiblity of overclocking. I'm wondering if overclocking would buy me anything in the real world - I've never done this but from what I read it makes your CPU run hotter and can cause stability issues. Not sure what the performance gains would be, but I would not want to trade stability for speed. On the other hand, if the CPU cooler would mitigate any stability problems, I could go for the i7-2600K and a Z86 mobo for maybe $40 more.

Jeff, thanks for the thoughts.
Re: RAM...
I hadn't heard about that 12GB usability. Mostly I was just loading up on memory because every PC I've ever bought I ended up adding more RAM after the fact. My chosen mobo has 4 slots and dual channel, so whatever I get, I'd probably go for a pair of something, i.e. (2) 4GB or (2) 8GB.
Frankly, I'm a little stuck on memory.
On one hand, it seems fairly simple: get the cheapest (decent) memory and plop it in. On the other hand, there's a lot of options with brand, speed, and latency... do they have any real-word effect? I have no plans of overclocking.
For example,
8GB of Corsiar Vengeance (2 x 4GB) RAM is $50. Speed = 1600, Cas Latency = 9, Timing = 9-9-9-24.
16GB of Corsair Vengeance (2 x 8GB) RAM is $150. Speed=1600, Cas Latency = 10, Timing = 10-10-10-27.
So looking at the 8GB kit, I think: I could either do 8GB for $50, or double up (i.e. 4 x 4GB) and get 16GB for $100. For a $50 difference, that seems worth it.
But then I read a few things that basically said that all other things being equal, 2 DIMMs is better than 4 DIMMs just because of the coordination between the chips. Plus if I use 4 DIMMs I've used up all my mobo slots - if I ever wanted to add more memory (for Windows 11) I'd have to throw away perfectly good memory to free up slots.
So then I think, well the 16GB should use 2 x 8GB. But doing so means going from 8GB (2 x 4GB) to 16GB (2 x 8GB) is a difference of $100 instead of $50. Maybe that's not worth it. Plus from what I know about latency, less = better, so are the 8GB DIMMs actually slower than the 4GB DIMMs?
Arrgh!
Re: Video Card
For my initial build when funds are tight (i.e. my better half is watching closely ), I planned on just using the CPU GPU.
I looked up the GTX 560 and was pleasantly surprised to see that I could get an EVGA version for $190. That certainly makes the memory argument more compelling... a $50 memory savings won't do much toward getting me a GTX560, but $100 does!
So let me ask you this: Premiere Pro says it supports the GTX285/470/570/580 for GPU acceleration. The GTX560 looks like it has CUDA, so is that one of the cards that I could just tweak a config file and have Premiere Pro support it (albeit unofficially)?
I don't have Premiere Pro currently, but that's in my future plans, too.

  • Recommended development-machine spec: seeking opinions

    All,
My current laptop has problems running these newfangled development tools,
so I think it's time to upgrade.
I'd be grateful for any opinions on exactly what spec of machine I need to
ensure I don't get wound up waiting for it to respond!
The one (Win2K) machine is supposed to fulfil all my development requirements, so
I guess it'll be concurrently running JDev 9i using BC4J against an 8i or 9i
database server, with Internet Explorer v5+ and maybe the odd Windows app.
BTW: I've read that the minimum requirements are a PIII 500 with >256MB ram, but
IIRC I also read a review that said JDev was extremely slow on
    a PIII 500 with 512Meg.
    Thanks for any advice!

    Hi Michael,
I would bump RAM up a little bit.
I just ran a test on CPU and Memory usage on my machine using the W2K Server Task Manager. It's not as scientific as some would like but here are my real-world results using the IMB machine described above.
At the beggining of the test, Oracle 9iAS and 9iDB were running as services using default configurations and memory usage was at 440 MB and CPU was at 5%. I then started JDeveloper 9.02 which briefly pegged CPU and memory usage climbed to 612 MB. I then built a Business Components Package (BC4J Model) based upon 12 tables in my 9iDB which took 45 seconds, memory usage jumped 628 MB and CPU was pegged for most of that time. Then I used BC4J-JSP Wizard to create a Business Components Application (BC4J-JSP) based upon the Business Components Package I just built. This took 23 seconds, memory remained at 628 MB and CPU was again pegged. Then I compile both BC4J model and BC4J-JSP app with took 35 seconds, memory jumped to 653 MB and again CPU was pegged. I then started the BC4J-JSP app within JDeveloper using the imbedded OC4J server which took 45 seconds come up with IE5.5, memory usage climbed to 695 MB. Lastly I test the BC4J-JSP app by selecting "MyTable Browse" (one of the choices from the BC4J-JSP app) which took 10 seconds to start, memory jumped to 705 MB and CPU never pegged.

When selecting the size of the machine the only option available is amount of memory and disk space.  There seems to be no option for processor speed and number of CPU's.  Anyone knows how many cores is available and what is the processor speed?
Also when choosing the App Service is the Apps run on the same machine as the Database or on a different machine?  If on a different machine what are the specs for the machine the app is run on?

hey guys i just ordered a new ThinkPad T430 and when is was delivered i found there was no such information from outer box telling me the detailed spec of this machine, so i am wondering if there is anyway i can find the detailed spec? it lacks of Bluetooth/keyboard/network adapter information from the outlet page.
also, i am curious how accurate lenovo outlet spec is. is that possible i will get a machine with better or wose configuration?

You need to find your ThinkPad's machine type / model  number. It's printed on a small label on the bottom of the case or inside the battery compartment and looks something like this (the 2668-KHU part):
Use this to look up the specs for that specific model on Lenovo's website using the Quick Path at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/#

  • Static field component in virtual machine spec

    Hello.
I can’t understand some point in JavaCard Virtual Machine Specification v2.2.2.
Section: 6.10 Static Field Component. See table 6-14. segment 4 – it describe “primitive types initialized to non-default values”. It is describes by two parameters : non_default_value_count, non_default_values[].non_default_values – is image of all static primitive fields independence of it type – byte, short, int. This image consist from data in big-endian order.
How I can use it at architecture with little-endian order?
I can’t parse where short or int – I can’t convert it. How I can do it?

As you pointed out it is not known from the CAP file format where single short or int values begin. At access time you know where the value starts and of which type it is. Therefore it looks like you have no choice but to convert the value at every access from or to big endian.
This is from a design perspective definitely not nice regarding the VM design but I don't think the performance penalty is too costly.

  • Rendering Machine Specs

I am looking to build a machine specifically for rendering.  I have listed the options below.  Does anyone have issues with this build? Improvements? Overkill?
    Thanks for all input.
Processor: Intel Xeon Processor E5-2620 (15M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 7.20 GT/s Intel QPI)

    2nd MemoryDIMM:16GB ECC 2Rx4 PC3 1600MHz RDIMM
    First VideoAdapter:Nvidia Quadro 4000 (Dual link DVI, DP, DP, Stereo 3D) - 2GB GDDR5 - Win7ME8.0

First Hard DriveBay:2.5" 256GB SATA Solid State Drive (OPAL)
Second HardDrive Bay:2.5" 300GB SATA - Solid State Drive (SSD), 6Gb/s, MLC
    First Optical
    Device Bay:DVD Burner/CD-RW Rambo Drive (SATA) - Win7 ME8.0

You will want a third, much larger, hard drive to keep your footage and renders on. One SSD for the OS and programs and one for the cache is fine, but I'd want a bigger drive to put everything else on.
The Quadro is certainly overkill for After Effects work. Barring third-party plugins (like Element 3d), AE only uses the power of the GPU for certain few things. Read about it here. Even if you use Element 3d, the card is still overkill.
The power of Xeon processors is really shown in that you can have more than one in your system. This is great for 3d software, but not so much for AE. In the current version of AE, AE is not very good at utilizing multiple cores, much less multiple processors. For some projects it works really well to render on multiple cores. However, for some projects, it actually makes it worse. Unless you're planning to put two Xeons in your box, I would consider getting the lower class of processor. And, whatever processor you get, I would get one with fewer cores and a higher clock speed.
Now, keep in mind that all of this processor talk is related to the current version of After Effects. I am very hopeful that they will sort out the multicore and multiprocessor rendering issues in a future version and get AE up to the blazing speed I think it could have.

  • Shared Memory Settings for Oracle - Machine Spec Specific?

    Hi,
I've been asked to apply some shared memory settings for Oracle on a new V210. The DBA has asked that we simply copy the settings from one system file to the new machine.
My problem is that I'm not entirely sure whether this is the best course of action. The machine the settings are taken from is a E280R with 2GB Memory and 2 x 900Mhz processors. The new V210 has 2GB and 2 x 1.33Ghz.
Surely the memory settings should be different? Don't worry, I've copied the relevant settings - not the whole system file!
    Thanks for any advice,
    John

    Hi John,
Normally, When you want to apply the shm. We normally for production machines , consider 1/3rd of your physical memory. For eg. If you have 16gb of physical memory, I would consider around 4gb of shm_max.
    Thanks,

  • My machine specs are correct but my InDesign still crashes randomly.

I'm not running loads of programs at the same time and the processor, graphics card and RAM all look more than sufficient. Any ideas?

Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details like the actual crash logs. Crashes rarely ever have anything to do with insufficient hardware, but since you haven't provided the actual info, we have no way of verifying your claims.

  • Machine specs - A60

My laptop is an Equium A60 - how can I tell which version it is and whether it has wifi?
I can get the 'Config Free' utility to search for wireless devices, but I don't think it actually has wireless built in - so is this a red herring?

    Hi
Your unit is Equium A60-157. Unfortunately your unit has no WLAN and has no Bluetooth. There is also no wireless antenna and if you want to make WLAN connection you must use Wireless USB stick or PCMCIA wireless card.

  • Oracle EBS is patehtically working on VM Ware although it has same specs as of physical machine.

    Hi Everyone,
We are running Oracle EBS on Physical machine having specs as follows:
    DB
X2 Quad Core Xeon 2.4 GHz
    32 GB RAM
x2 146GB SAS Drive with RAID-1 for OS
    SAN HDD x10 450GB SAS 15K i.e. 4.0TB but RAID-5 implemented (2.3TB allotted to DB)
    x4 NIC but 1 NIC used 10/100/1000

X2 Quad Core Xeon 2.4 GHz
    32 GB RAM
x2 146GB SAS Drive with RAID-1 for OS
    SAN HDD x10 450GB SAS 15K i.e. 4.0TB but RAID-5 implemented (500GB allotted to Apps)
    x4 NIC but 1 NIC used 10/100/1000
We are facing serious issues when migrated Oracle EBS on vmware infrastructure.
Issue are related to high I/Os and high CPU usage hence performance of the application gets down badly whereas same application on physical machine working fine. We would also like to share physical machine is with lesser specification.
    Following are specs of Oracle & VM Ware machine;
Oracle EBS is with 11g v1.1.07 Database and R12 v12.1.3 Apps
OS for above applications is RED HAT Enterprise Linux 5.5 64bit
    ESXi version 5.5.0 build 1331820
Hope to have a positive reply.

    Hi Linjo,
    Thank you for your response.
VM MAchine specs are as follows:
(There are two servers, everything is same except local storage.)
    Both servers are HP DL 585 G7 server with;
    Quad AMD Opteron Processor 2.5GHz
    12GB RAM
    x8 NIC
    Local-1 HDD x8 600GB SAS 10K i.e. 5.4TB, RAID-5 implemented

    SAN-2 HDD x6 2TB SAS 7.2K i.e. 8TB but RAID-5 implemented
Yes, it is a shared environment, like we have other machines are running on VM but we have dedicated cores & memory for EBS Apps & DB servers.

  • Help me identify problem for slow export on a powerful machine

    Hi,
I am exporting an interview in Premiere Pro CC. It is 1:45:00 long and it has been 20 hours since, but the export is only 94% complete.
    Project & Footage:
    The footage is a combination of DSLR footage - 5D Mark III, GH3, 650 & 550D.
The edit is all straight cuts with: {a} Color corrector on each clip to match all cameras {b} NEAT - reduce noise on around 10% clips {c} Sharpen (10-30) & {d} An adjustment layer overall with a 3-way color corrector for a simple color grade.
    Hard Drives:
E: SSD-RAID for the source footage (Samsung 840 SSD on RAID-0)
D: SSD for previews and cache (Samsung 840 Pro)
C: SSD for Windows, Adobe CC & all programs (Samsung 840 Pro)
G: Simple Seagate Hard disk for Export (used to be a 3 disk RAID but 2 drives crashed some time back)
    Other Machine Spec:
    Intel i7-3930K overclocked by 10%
    64GB RAM
    GTX-770 GPU
This is my longest project to date in terms of total time, but last time I did a 1:00:00 project, took around 2 hours not 20.
My concern is I need to understand where the bottleneck is?
My CPU is hardly working a sweat - 40% at max
My RAM is plenty - being used 40-70%
GPU is not even being used in anything (see it at 0%)
Disks (which I was sure was the bottleneck) barely cross 10MB/s
Checked the "power options" in Windows also - everything is set to maximum performance.
It was a big mistake not to send it to Media Encoder as I could have continued editing a different project. Biggest. Mistake. Ever! (no idea why Adobe does not make it a default behaviour?)
I am fairly new to the industry and till last year was using a MacBook Pro until I started getting demanding projects.
I want to know is this normal? If I had used NEAT video for 100% footage then probebly I could have understood this, but its used for only 1/10th of thr footage and I have used NEAT before (but on After Effects CS6) on my Macbook pro (nowehere near as fast as my current machine) and it only added a small overhead - nothing of this sort.
I expected maybe 3 hours to export this 90-100 min seqeunce, not over 1 day.
So what could be the reason? Why isn't one of the above (CPU, RAM, Disk, GPU) at 100%?
I expected 1 of these to be the bottleneck but nothing is crossing 50% even when it should be on full blast.
I dread what if there is small tweak required in the edit once its complete. This video is due on Monday, I would have to reencode for 24 hours.
Please experts - let me know your thoughts. Could it be that Creative Cloud Windows is slower than CS6 Mac & its not a hardware problem?
I am sure I am missing some hardware that is causing this bottlenck. Attaching resource Monitor screenshot (let me know if I should use some benchmark software for you guys to get more information).

UPDATE: My export crashed (and heart sank) after 96% (25 hours). Win7 restarted. I have no clue why (If someone has any tip how to seach logs/dump in Windows to find a reason how, please let me know - I was worried about CPU temperature but that was around 40 deg, I was monitoring it.)
Anyways, so I used Media Encoder now (instead of direct export in PrPro) and made 2 changes:
    1. I unchecked "Render Maximum Depth" just as it is in the the default Youtube 1080p@24p preset (but kept the keyframing distance at 24 instead of 72 which is default).
    2. From VBR - 2 Pass, I made it CBR
Its been 15 min I started the export and the video is 20% encoded already, with remaning time just 00:30 min.
    Now I am flabergasted.
Did not using maximum depth & VBR- 2 pass alone make such a difference? From 30 hours to 1 hour? I am still using all the video effects and absolutely no change to the edit.
I am seeing 2 differences the way my machine is working:
    1. Is Adobe somehow using some old renders it did for the last export? I am using disk utility and it is refering to original source files and some "Media Encoder preview files" which I think it was not using before (could be wrong)?
So all that hard work it did for 25 hours is being utilized and if I do such a project again it will take me 30 hours again. Right?
    2. GPU is now being used (and to good effect). How is GPU being used now? I am not scaling or using any fancy effects. Just Neat Video, 3-way color corrector & Sharpen.
This was before (export done in Premiere Pro directly):
    And this is now:
Very sad that no one (even from the Adobe Staff) has replied to my post. Did I say something inappropriate or TMI?
C'mon guys I am on the Creative Cloud - show me some love

  • Time Machine Speed after Bootcamp

I'm sure this topic has been discussed before but none of them tend to have the solution that works for me so I'm gonna see what I can get on my own.
    Hi!
So recently I have been backing up my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro to a 500 GB SeaGate external HDD for Time Machine purposes due to recent data loss. I've been doing this since about July-August and it's been going smoothly. Recently as well I have decided to put a Windows 7 Ultimate Edition on my MacBook as-well so I could run some necessary applications. Sometimes I tend to slack on my backups as my Time Machine is stationed on my desk which I rarely use since I am on the go almost 24/7.
It had been about 19 days a few days ago since my last backup and I decided time to backup so I put my computer at my desk while I was working in Microsoft Word for about an hour and a half and I decided to check on the backup status, and it was at about 200 KBs after almost 2 hours. I was shocked by this considering my backups usually are 30-40 gigs + as data comes and goes off my computer and normally it takes just about an hour to fully back it up. Well I decided maybe my computer might need a restart so I did so and got side-tracked.
It has now been 21 days and I decided OKAY time for a backup immediatley. I had restart my computer and plugged in my Time Machine and left it for about 45 minutes. I came back just now, and it is currently at 219.7 MB / 214.36 GB (which is strangely large) which is a signifigant increase in data transfer than last time. I was wondering if since I have installed *Bootcamp with Windows on my computer that it will backup data from there as-well and if it will take up more time to do this than before.
I wish it would go faster as I can't ALWAYS be stationed at my desk. I may leave my computer running overnight and let it backup as much as it can before I have to use it agian. I was wondering if the Apple Communtiy could help me out. I have specs for my computer and my Time Machine. Thanks guys.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • CS5 cannot support nVidia and ATI cards in same machine?

Until recently, I was operating fine with a Radeon HD 5750 on dual monitors.  I wanted to add and utilize a third monitor (had some trouble with the DisplayPort output), so I just stuck in an off the shelf nVidia 8400 card.
With the latest drivers on both, and both using OpenGL 3.2, CS5 seems to just freak out.  (The issue seems to be OpenGL centric.)
Photoshop x86 just crashes while loading.
Photoshop x64 will load, but it immediately reports that my cards do not support OpenGL acceleration and disables it.  It otherwise seems to work fine.
After Effects will sort of run, but some strange things crash while it's loading (like gpu_sniffer.exe).  It crashes all the time during RAM previews, now, and the option to accelerate the GUI (or previews) with OpenGL is disabled.  So, while it's use-able, it's slow.
Premiere Pro absolutely refuses to start.  I cannot even get a splash screen.
(The other apps I do not use much.)
I've gone back to dual monitor for now on the Radeon card (problems resolved with disabling the nVidia card), but do the CS5 apps really have that much trouble with two video cards with different chipsets?  Is there something I am forgetting to do?  I am not asking any of the apps to utilize the third monitor, so I cannot fathom what the issue is.  Again, the OpenGL version is the same on both cards...and both cards have the latest drivers (both from November).
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction or let me know what I should do to enable the nVidia card to peacefully co-exist and still be able to use OpenGL with the CS5 apps.
    Thanks for your help.
    Machine specs:
    * P43-based ASUS motherboard
    * Intel Core2Quad (each core at 2.8Ghz)
    * Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
    * 16 GB DDR3 RAM
    * ATI Radeon HD 5750 (1GB)
    * nVidia 8400 GS (512MB)
    * CS5 Master Collection

It's not that the apps don't support mixed cards - but that the OpenGL drivers for the cards do not work well together.
Even mixing different models of cards from the same vendor can run into problems when using OpenGL.
Some apps have made mixed cards work - by using one GPU and completely ignoring the rest.
We've talked to the GPU vendors to see about improving the situation, but, well, they're competitors.

  • 2 identical machines - different CPU temps

I recently built two XP3200+ identical machines (specs below). All parts were purchased from the same company (NewEgg) and both processors were retail packaged. My concern is the CPU temperature on System 2. Here are the vitals at idle with about 1 hour warmup:
    System 1
    CPU temp: 43 C
CPU Fan Speed: averages 3800 RPM
    System temp: 38 C
    System 2
    CPU temp: 55 C
CPU Fan Speed: averages 4300 RPM
    System temp: 38 C
I know both CPU temps are with allowable limits but why would they be so different?
BTW... I did try removing the heatsink, cleaning it and the CPU, then reapplying Arctic Silver 5 and got no difference in temperature readings. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a problem with this corecenter too. I buy a thermaltake cpu fan and my cpu tem. dropped about  40C . After that i think i updated corecenter. And i didn't looked so much to corecenter. One day i saw that in corecenter my cpu tem is about 50C. And that night i updated corecenter again and my cpu temp. dropped 42C from 52C
Which one i will trust 52C or 42C. I am frightening to hear don't trust both of them
