DKA790GX Platinum Bad, Cause?

So over the weekend I transplanted my DKA790GX Platinum from my Antec Nine Hundred Two to a Thermaltake Kandalf LCS liquid cooled case.  I ran the system for 24 hours without the 24 pin and 4 pin power to make sure there were no leaks and all was good.  I hooked up the motherboard and booted it up.  I ran Orthos for about 15 minutes and the computer powered down.  All of the BIOS settings were the "fail safe" settings except for 2.1v on the memory and 1066Mhz for the Kingston HyperX.
System Config:
DKA790GX Platinum
AMD 940 BE 3.0Ghz
8 Gb (4 x 2gb) Kingston HyperX
2 x Radeon HD4870
Corsair TX850 Power Supply
DLink Wireless-N PCI Card
I disconnected the 24pin and 4 pin and jumpered the powersuppy and everything in the computer powered up.  I connected the 4 Pin and 24 Pin connector to the motherboard and everything would power on briefly, for a split second.  LED's on the fans would flash and fans would rotate slightly.  I removed all but memory and cpu and removed the motherboard from the chassis and hooked up the 4 pin and jumpered the 24 pin, and the same would happen.  The fan on the power supply would rotate slightly and power off.  I used another 350w power supply from another computer and hooked up the 4 pin and nothing would happen.  I hooked up the Corsair 850w Power Supply to the other computer and it powered up fine.  So I have narrowed it down that it's the Motherboard.  The same happened before with an earthwatts 750 power supply and figured it was the power supply.  I exchanged the power supply for a Corsair TX850 and everything worked fine.  I also tried another CPU and RAM.  Could this have been something that the motherboard was already bad (purchased from Newegg.com as an "Open Box" purchase) on 3/22/2009.  If not, what could have possibly happened to cause the motherboard to fail?

Set the memory to DDR800 speed, 1066 only works well with 1 stick per channel, 2 per channel is mostly causing problems.
(See sticky about it)
Powerdown is mostly due to an overheating CPU, check the BIOS how hot it becomes.
When it does get very hot, redo the CPU-cooler.
In my opinion you made a mistake with it.

  • DKA790GX Platinum & USB +5V Standby Voltage.

    Hi All,
Has anyone managed to get USB Standby +5V to work on a DKA790GX Platinum?
All my other MSI m/boards allow 5Volts to the USB, so that wireless mice can be charged whilst off etc, but this board does not do that.
I contacted MSI and they said
' This is the BIOS spec. And we will not supply the 5V standby voltage when the motherboards is powered off.
    Sorry for any inconvenience caused.'
Anyone know why the DKA790GX Platinum is the exception? Should I request a BIOS update?
    Any help welcome.

    Many thanks Bas & Aramus8.
It works, thank you - but my users are asking 'How much power gets consumed in Standby?', to which I have no answer.
I guess things have moved on. All my boards are MSI, even my old KM2M Combo - and they all gave 5V at power off.
Looks like Standby is the future.
Any ideas how much power is being used? The standby obviously keeps the memory going, as the emergence from standby returns you to the same user instance!
    Any thoughts welcome.

  • Cpu cooler with DKA790GX Platinum

Hello, planing on buying DKA790GX Platinum with a Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition, my question is about what cpu cooler fits the best on this board? Would a TRUE (Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme) fit or will it cover 2 or more memory slots? Or maybe someone can recommend a great cpu cooler for this motherboard. Thanks.
    // Gras

    This is what I use.
    http://tinyurl.com/amb8k5
    It's gotten good reviews
The thing points towards the back of the case (which i like cause I have a fan back there blowing air OUT the case) so without the fan it will not cover the memory. With the fan on it will barely be over the first memory. Though this isn't a problem unless you have some memory with some tall heat sink attached. I was able to move the memory from slots 3-4 to slots 1-2 without removing the fan and just sliding is up a little. Does use the same annoying (to me) wire fan holders like the Thermalright. Best to attach the thing before you put the motherboard in the case, Could be a pain in the a** otherwise depending on your case, (though I was able to do it with some pain and suffering).
Oh yes..i'm using the same CPU you plan to buy.

  • DKA790GX platinum eterna reboot

    Config :
    DKA790GX Platinum
    4 Gb DDR2
    HDD sata 150 Go
    Gainward Radeon HD4870
The problem : I have to use the reset button on mainboard to boot my computer after using the on/off button of the mainboard or the computer box. So i've update the bios to 1.7. Now my computer start, detect the drivers (CD and HDD) and then reboot again and again and again ...
I've tried to use one of the 2 memory, i've test the HDD on another Computer, i've tried to use the mainboard graphic card instead of the gainward, i've change the mainboard for another DKA790GX Platinum with the same problem. I don't see the solution.
    Any idea ?

Sorry, not read the guide :

I've download the last bios version 1.7 and put the A7550AMS.170 file on USB Key. I've the message Reading file "A7550AMS.1xx" but nothing happened next. What is the way to flash the bios now ?

  • DKA790GX Platinum No POST

I just put everything back together from not using it for a few months.  The system turned on and booted into windows.  I restarted and went into bios, and now when I try to start the computer it doesn't POST.  The video card fan just spins at full speed.   I have a PCI diagnostics card and it gives me error E6- "To enable floppy and timer IRQ, enable internal cache."  I have tried to clear CMOS multiple times with the same result.  I will rebuild and try different ram sticks now, but would like to know if anyone has any input...
    System is:
    MSI DKA790GX Platinum bios 1.8
    Phenom II x3 720
    OCZ Platinum 2 x 2gb 1066mhz
    Sapphire 4870 1gb
    Corsair TX850W
Fixed- I think the video card was not properly seated, sorry

That would cause the system not to boot.  Good troubleshooting and no need to be sorry.

  • DKA790GX Platinum SOLVED (backward FP connector and IGP driver issues)

Hi all. I just got my DKA790GX Platinum along with the rest of my new PC parts yesterday and got it all up and running last night with Vista Ultimate x64. So far everything runs smooth as silk except for a couple small hiccups...
1: The power LED doesn't light up. My front panel wires only have a 3 pin connector, so I'm using the 3 pin spot on JFP2 with the arrow on the connector on the + pin. SOLVED: Connector from the front panel was wired backward. Put the arrow to - and it worked perfectly!
2: the HD3300 onboard video seems limited  to 1440x900 pixels resolution. My monitor supports 1680x1050, which I was running on my old computer with a radeon x1650xt. Since most of the reviews I'd read placed the HD3300 between the HD2xxx and HD3xxx series for performance, I figured it'd be a better card than the x16xx series. In this respect I guess not unless anyone has a way to enable higher resolutions on it.  SOLVED: Installed the latest catalyst drivers from ATI for the HD3400 series and in the advanced control center under Monitor Properties 0 -> Attributes unchecked Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults then manually set my maximum resolution and refresh rate to those of my monitor. After this in the advanced control center under Display Options I was able to set my desktop area and refresh rate to the correct numbers.
3: Initially I was getting awful frame tearing or interlacing of some sort on video playback, including both DVDs and video files like AVI. This I was able to resolve by disabling Aero but I'd think there should be a better solution for such low intensity usage. I never had this problem on the x1650xt in XP. Any ideas for any of these problems would be much appreciated!
    Current system specs:
    Mainboard: DKA790GX Platinum
    CPU: Phenom 9950 Back box
    RAM: 4GB OCZ 1066
    Sound: Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1
    HDD: Samsung 1TB SATA2
    Chassis: Thermaltake Armor+MX
PSU: Antec 430w (will be replaced with a higher wattage supply when I have the money but works for now)
    Monitor: Samsung 225BW (22" widescreen)
I'm using all the latest drivers from the MSI web site for the motherboard, and from the manufacturer websites for sound and monitor.

Yes, I downloaded the latest Samsung 225BW drivers from their web site though I find it questionable as to whether they're functioning properly or not; Adobe Photoshop CS3 gives an error on startup saying the monitor's color profile is corrupt. My guess is the drivers aren't fully compatable with Vista x64.
Meanwhile I got my replies from MSI, both from the customer service form which I filled out first, and the technical support form which I'd found shortly after submitting the first ticket. I've never gotten two such vastly different yet both so woefully inadequite answers from a company in my life
    Tech Support's answer:

There is no problem with the on board HD3300 VGA which can support the full 1080P resolution which be sure to have the latest mb bios and a fresh/clean OS installation and follow by updated system and device drivers installation which there is no problem to support the 1680x1050 when the monitor can support it: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1552 ** http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1552
    Customer Service's answer
    Quote
    Dear customer,
The onboard VGA performance is lower than external VGA. It is normal.
    Best regards
    MSI technical support team
Tech support while correct didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, and the broken english is difficult to read. The customer service answer is ridiculously false, I have to wonder if this employee ever bothered to look up the answer (yes an IGP is typically less powerful than a discreet video card but the goals I was after were well within the card's capabilities. The fact that I was able to resolve the issues proves that). I hold MSI hardware in very high esteem. I've never had a problem with an MSI product that wasn't caused by another part failing (my K9N-Neo F in my previous computer popped a cap in the northbridge when the PSU blew out, and my wife had an MSI board literally melt a few years back in a power surge, neither was MSI's fault) but my estimation of their customer support has dropped a few notches today.
To sum this entire experience up though; this is simply one of the newer MSI boards on the market and it hasn't had a long time for drivers to be perfected. The ATI drivers work slightly better for now. As for how I figured it out, I read a review on the board somewhere (maybe newegg since that's where I bought it) that mentioned the catalyst drivers from ATI have had the HD3300 in them for a few months now even though it's not linked directly on their site yet. I figured the HD3400 would be worth a try. :D
In an unrelated topic, I've got a new problem though I'm not sure if it's related to the board at all. For some reason Portal stutters awfully in full screen mode even with details turned way down. It runs fine in windowed mode. On googling it I found several other people on the net have had the same problem but no answers have been put forward that I've seen. As far as I can tell it's a DX9 emulation error in Vista x64 but no way to prove it and no ideas for a solution. Then again the IGP could simply be insufficient to power that game despite being nearly twice as fast as the x1650XT I'd been using in my previous machine....

  • DKA790GX Platinum and memory issues

I've had my dka790gx platinum now for approximately 2 weeks.
    Build is as follows
    DKA790GX-Plat - bios v1.6
    AMD Phenom II X4 940
    2 x 2gb Corsair Dominator 1066 (5-5-5-15 @ 2.1)
    Gigabyte HD 4870x2
    Creative X-Fi Extreme GF-PS
    Tagan 900BZ
It has been working fine but all off a sudden I started getting the dreaded BSOD in vista 'apc_index_mismatch' and 'memory_management' - I've ran memtest and on the first test @ 45% the system reboots with 4gb of memory in. This happens whether it is running @ 800mhz or 1066mhz, I've also tried 4 x 1gb of corsair xms2 ddr 800mhz and get actually the same issue. If I run 2gb of memory then all tests are ran without any problems and again this is for both the dominator memory running @ 800 and 1066mhz, and also the xms2 memory.
I've then ran another test using the 2 x 1gb xms2 + 2 x 512mb xms2 (all ddr2 800) to give total of 3gb and ensuring all 4 memory slots are populated, and again all tests run fine.
I've tried the memory in ganged mode and unganged mode, but it doesn't make a difference, once i go over 3gb I have the problem, so is this a motherboard fault (i've opened support ticket but had to miss some info as it meant fully stripping down the pc to get hold of the sticker on the side of the pci slot) or a cpu fault seeing the memory controllers are on the cpu?

As far as overheating is concerned, it really shouldn't be a problem. Before getting a cooler for my RAM, it would get too hot to touch during full load, but would never run into any sort of problem. If you don't believe me have a look at what a SUPER*TALENT Stick looks like: http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/200702/supertalentT1000UX2G4_full.jpg - Compare that to the dominator, The SuperTalent has to be just about the ugliest MEM-SINK you could ever lay eyes on  EXCELLENT RAM though
Kind of a really silly question here: when testing below 4gb, you are testing both sticks, right? I mean they look identical, a small distraction & you're putting the same one back in...happened to me...
yep memory was tested as single chips, also as stated previously testing 4 x 1gb of other memory caused memtest to fail, but 4 x 512mb passed, so did 2 x 1gb + 2 x 512mb
memtest fails all the time when have 4gb of memory in this mother in any combination, but using pc-check all memory passes, if my works had a ddr-2 memory checker then I would have also teste the memory in that as that will pick out memory faults better than any software
Also when the dominator is in slot 1 there is about 1cm between heatsink and dominator fins at the most, so this be a possible cause of the memory getting too hot especially as I would leave the machine on 24/7, but as I've re-setup another machine to do the stuff this machine was doing then i'm hoping i don't see the problem..

  • Problems after BIOS update on DKA790GX Platinum

    Hi,
I have set up a pc with the DKA790GX Platinum (MS7550). The config:
    - Phenom 8750
    - Silverstone 400W PSU (fanless)
    - 2x2GB Crucial PC5300
    - Pioneer Blu-ray
    - Seagate Momentus 5400.4
    (this is a HTPC setup...)
The pc started up fine and I installed the OS. I had the board connected to my monitor through HDMI.
After updating the BIOS the board went all black on me. I tried connecting a floppy-drive to recover to a older BIOS-version, but could get the board to do that. I then tried different monitor-connections, but nothing.
I then installed a Gigabyte Radeon HD 4870 1GB-board I had laying here, and board seems to boot somehow - all graphics are messed so I can't read whats on the screen, but at least I get some kind of image. A little unsure on how the PSU handle that videoboard.
Anyone know if the 1.2 BIOS-update maybe is set to <swearing removed> the integrated video by looking for a videoboard in the system? Have a Asus 9800GT Matrix-board in a another pc here - maybe I remove that and try it in the new pc, but... argh..
This ain't funny at all anymore. I had a P45 Platinum dying during a BIOS upgrade. I had a P45 Diamond that dosn't want to boot anymore, and now this... MSI-motherboards really don't want to be friends with me at the time  :-|

Hi have exactly teh same problem,
On Dec/2008 I have set up a PC with DKA790GX Platinum (MS7550 ver 1.2), Phenom 9750, 1 120GB hd, 4 MB corsair xms2 ddr2 800mhz, psu 500w. I installed the win xp pro OS. I had the board connected to my monitor vga. After updating the BIOS (with live update utility) the board went all black on me (the fan, PSU, hd starts normal). I test the PSU, HD and the memory, but the problem still continue.
Two days after, the PC start normal, but I don't know what was the problem.
Aleatory when try to start the PC, sometimes I get exactly the same problem, but, Yesterday, I try again to work with me PC and now i have the same problem.
What can i do to fix this problem?

  • Dka790gx platinum

hello, I checked to see if there was any updates for my motherboard, it seems to have been removed from msi site (and never existed according to the search engine) I downloaded live update 5 which only recognised my 295 gtx (made by gainwood ) I am guessing this is not supported any longer so there will be no further updates? bios is 1G and i just updated network driver from realtek's site, is this what I need to do from now?
    thanks.
also wanted to check cpu compatibilty to see if this is worth updating.
    thanks again.

Are you having any problems? If not, then there is no need to update drivers. And please uninstall LiveUpdate 5, it is not very useful, and potentially dangerous.

  • DKA790GX platinum problems

hi there, please bear with me as i am pretty new to building computers, i recently bought and installed a 25.g phenom, and a dka790gx platinum board.
i also have a radeon 3850 hd card installed. since doing this, formatting my hard drive and using a clean install of windows vista i have been plagued with programs crashing, one or two blue screens and other such instability. i only have 3 1 gig ram sticks installed, do i need to use pairs? i ran the windows memory checker as i play world of warcraft and when that crashes it said memory could not be wriiten, or read, on two diff occasions.
i would really appreciate some help on this. firefox seems to be a program that has a lot of problems, as does windows live messenger and yahoo messenger, these problems do see intermittent though.
    regards, and hoping for help.

What works good on one board doesn't always work on another.
Take a look at the other user signatures on this and other forums and look for users with the same motherboard, see what memory they're using.
Don't mix and match memory, pick a brand and part number and stick with it. If you change brands, or part numbers within a brand, change ALL
of your memory to that brand/ part number.
If your running dual channel, buy matched pairs,  They're matched at the factory to work together, and will have closer to identical specs than two sticks
    you buy separately.
Check your memory manufacturer's website for compatibility with your motherboard (OCZ doesn't list your motherboard on their site, but it's a new board , so it might be worth a call).
Search for reviews of your motherboard or the memory your thinking about purchasing and see if any of the sites have used your motherboard and/or memory for a review.
If it's a popular motherboard, odds are somebody will be using it as a test bed,  If your lucky, they used or reviewed the memory your interested in, on your board.
Hang out here for a bit and see if anyone is using or tried your motherboard/memory combination.

    Hello!
You need a lot of components to be able to use AHCI. PSU, processor, memory, etc. etc.
Have a look in BIOS under Integrated Peripherals. If you run XP I suggest you do not change to AHCI.
