DL/page load speed great, but browser "looking up" and "connecting to" slow

I just got Fios Internet on Monday. The speed of downloading and webpage loading is really good! However, there is one annoying problem that maybe someone can help with? When I enter a URL, it takes a long time for the browser to "look up" and "connect to" the site. For example, it takes 10 seconds to "look up" google.com (which should load almost instantly). The problem is that many sites that pull from different advertisers... getting on a news site is awful because it takes forever for the internet to look up "ads.cnn.com" and "advertisements.ystd.dhsk.com" or whatever. But once if finally looks them up and connects to them, the ads load quickly.
Any ideas about what I can try?

Ok, a bunch of replies, so here's some more information:
1.) I'm using a Mac... Operating system is OS X 10.4.11. Web browser is FireFox.
2.) I changed DNS servers to Open DNS (followed the directions provided on their site). No change in the time delay.
3.) Just to reiterate- This is not an issue of load speed. Once the content is "looked up" from the site, it loads quickly. It's the "looking up" and "connecting to" processes that take ridiculously long (ie. 13-15 seconds to look up google.com... puhleeze!) The delay is the same no matter what site I go to. And certain sites are awful (ie. sites that pull ad content from different sources... takes 10 seconds to access all of the ads.google.com, admedia.cnn.com, etc).... so the page takes forever to actually load.
4.) Nothing is slow about my computer... operating system, other programs, browser itself... all fine. The only thing that is a problem is the "look up," "connecting to," etc. time.
5.) dslr595.... I went to that site and tried the "ping" and "traceroute" steps, but I don't have a "network utilities" in my "utilities" folder. BUT- after reading that site, it sounds like that is more the type of issues that exists- the response time. Brand and model of the router is Actiontec MI424WR.

It's difficult to tell exactly what you mean, or where you are looking.
But if you're looking in the App Store on the iPad, in the Updates area, and you still see the icons, they presumably now say "Open" to the right instead of "Update". They will stay that way as a history of what you have done. They will disappear after a while - something like 30 days. That is fine.

Why has my page loading speed slowed on OS6?

My page loading speed has slowed to a crawl with OS6. Anybody else having this problem? I feel like I have a dial up connection.

We need more specific information about how you charge, how old the iPad is, etc.

Slow FF startup and page load speed

TIP TO IMPROVE SPEED(?): My FF startup and page load speeds increased dramatically when I used the auto feature in Ashampoo WinOptimizer 6 to adjust my internet settings. I've been using the comparable feature in TuneUp Utilities 2009 and FF speed was worse than abysmal. Hope this helps some of you. (You can obtain a trial version from Ashampoo or CNET; actually v7 is out and appears to be even better.)

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session. 
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time. 
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page. 
Another possibility is to use:

Slow web page loads on Mac, but not for PC

I use a D-Link wireless router (DI-524) for my PowerBook G4 15" and my roommate's Dell PC. Very recently I seem to get very slow web page loads with some pages not even loading at all.
Airport is consistently connected with no drops at all and when I'm downloading something it never gets interrupted the whole way through.
My roommate's PC has no problem whatsoever and all of the web pages that he visits load instantly. It seems that my main problem is with web pages.
I've tried doing a clean install on my Powerbook, I've tried resetting the router (I've tried upgrading the firmware but the router decided it didn't want to work with the new version). And surprisingly, I get the same slow speeds when I hook up my Powerbook to my router via ethernet cable. The only time my speeds are perfectly fine is when I hook up my Powerbook directly to the wall (I dorm in a university so we have a T3 line).
Can someone please give me some advice on this very frustrating issue?

In addition to Neds suggestions, empty the Safari cache (which should be empty after a clean install).
Goto the Safari Get Info screen (in Finder or in Dock if you have Safari there), click the triangle on languages, and disable those you don't use.
My Safari response time was significantly slowed after the 10.4.5 update, and using the combo updater took care of that. The 10.4.6 combo update is located here.

After upgrading to 8.0 the add-on compatability tool runs and the Getting Started web page loads every time the browser starts.

After upgrading to 8.0 from 7.0.1 every time I start FF I get the add-on compatibility tool to run and the Getting Started web page loads along with my homepage in separate tabs as well. So far I have tried running the installer again, disabling all add-0ns and custom settings and restarting and turning off automatic updates. Nothing worked there. I got the same behavior each time. I don't know what else to try other than a full uninstall and reinstall. Something I'd like to avoid if it's possible because of the time involved. This is the second time I have posted regarding this issue. The first time I didn't get a response. A solution or a possible workaround would be greatly appreciated if anyone knows of any. As a staff member and a global forum moderator for an anti-virus company I understand how hectic things can be at times but some feedback, good or bad, on this issue would be very welcomed! Hi michaell, thanks for the reply. I tried everything in the Preferences are not saved link you provided and nothing worked there. If creating a new profile will delete all my add-ons and custom settings I might as well just do a complete uninstall and reinstall. That actually would be easier. That article told me how to save my bookmarks though so I don't have to loose those which is nice. I don't know if this makes any difference but there is a discrepancy between the preference file in the article which is: prefs.js and what's showing on my PC which is: prefs with no .js suffix. I tried to rename the file to prefs.js and restarted. No luck there either. It just created another prefs file. I guess we've pretty much exhausted all the avenues to try! Web pages loading in links but not in GUI browsers

web pages are getting loaded in links text browser,but however in firefox or in epiphany the pages arent getting loaded.
Sometimes refreshing the page for a long time loads the page.The net connection has no problem ,it is working fine with windows.

Page load speed

Hello,
What are the factors that weight in APEX page loading time ? How can we pinpoint which factor is causing the app to be slow.
e.g:
I have two instances that have almost the same configuration, but there is around 100 ms difference in the page loading time.

The problem is the instance the is running in a certified server that is HP DL380p is slower than the instance that is running on the assembled PC.

My unscientific test was that initial load on both was very slow, perhaps slower on the first server. Then as expected, once woken up it seemed acceptable. Not snappy but good. Looking at the network traffic using Developer Tools, I have 300+ms spend just waiting. Then delivery is very fast. It seems to be on all pages.
So... I think the DB needs to be tuned or perhaps there's a lot of swapping going on. Hard to tell.
Clearly you're not even at the Application tuning step yet. Your environment has some bottlenecks somewhere. But you already knew that.

Combined PDF page display speed difference between Acrobat 8 Pro and Acrobat X Pro

I have encountered a display speed issue with regards to combining Tiffs with Acrobat X Pro. The Tiffs are between 200 KB and 600 KB. Tested the issue by using a series of Tiffs originally combined using Acrobat 8 Pro but used Acrobat X Pro to combine them. When I open the combined PDF files using X, I can cycle through the pages of the one created using 8 significatinly faster (i.e. about as fast as I can click) but the file created using X is significately slower. Note: PDF file size is smaller using X (30.9 MB) than same combined files using 8 (46.1 MB). Any ideas on what might be causing this issue?

Found a Tips & Tricks document for Acrobat 8 which indicated the default Monochrome Compression setting for Acrobat 8 is CCITT G4. Recreated the combined PDF file from the original Tiffs using X Pro with the modified setting and works like a charm. Thanks for the point in the right direction.

Firefox won't load any pages on SmartQ T10 but will find addons and sync. Why?

Pretty much as the title says, it installed fine, displays the startup page but won't load anything remotely except add-ons and sync data. Every other browser and inet app works fine on the device, including opera and the defaul browser, gmail etc, only Firefox doesn't work.

Not a reply but an update to my first posting. The problem fixed itself after about a month or so. Everything just returned to normal and Firefox worked again. Unfortunately the story continues. After a couple weeks of working the symptoms reoccurred and I was again without the use of Firefox. Pause - - - - but the story continues. I got fed up as I was writing this very update and I tried again for the countless time to find a solution. And the good news is I did and Firefox is again working. It turns out that I had always checked the MS Windows firewall which reflected that Firefox had access to the web. I never thought to check my antivirus program suite. It of course also has a firewall through which Firefox was for some reason not allowed. Once I gave Firefox access the problem was solved. I don't know why I had never thought of this. I am embarrassed to admit it but I hope this may help others.

Pages load very slowly, but load fine in Chrome and Safari. I've tried disabling add-ons, restarting, even uninstalling and reinstalling with no luck.

This just began happening today, although I had not installed any new add-ons. This problem also happens on version 4.01.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

I disabled IPv6. Still very slow.
To get in Safe Mode, I clicked Firefox/Help/Restart with add-ons disabled. I suspect this was the wrong thing to do because “All add-ons have been disabled by safe mode.
Actually, I did not see any opportunity to click a RESET button on the Safe Mode start window.
When I first entered the above question, I think I had an opportunity to run some diagnostics. However, because my computer is so slow, I actually posted the question from another linux computer, so saw no need to run the diagnostics on that machine. How can I get back to those diagnostics

Pogogame only loading the chat but not the game and it is a firefox problem as desltop and pogo say pogo os working right

They have advised clients to revert to FF3.6 until they adjust their system to run on FF8.

When shutting down my computer FF wants to load an update but it never finishes and shuts my computer down.

When I select the shut down icon on my computer, there is an icon to download an update but it will not load so it will not allow my computer to shut down.

I would recommend that you reboot into the Recovery Partition by rebooting while holding down the Command - R keys. After it boots, go into that Partition's "Disk Utility" and run "Repair Disk" after first selecting the "Macintosh HD" in the left hand column. Then run "Repair Permissions" twice. That repair may solve your hard drive's problem with booting.
