Dlink 655 and westell 6100

I bought a dlink n router 655 yesterday to replace my old belkin router. When i connect the modem to the n router and try to setup with the cd, it wont detect the internet. The modem i'm using is westell 6100. I had to bridge the modem to connect to the old router in order for it to work on that one. The new router i cant get it to work no matter what i do. I tried resetting the modem back to its default, and it didn't work. So i bridged it again. I even followed the router setup instructions that i found on the verizon forums and did the clone mac off the modem. i really need help with this.

ok, i already did that. thats how that internet is working with old belkin router. i also have that printed out so i dont miss anything. Ill try to re-explain
I recently upgraded my old belkin router to a new dlink 655 n router.  On my old router, the modem is bridged to it and works just fine.  I turn everything off to set up my new router.  It wants me to connect the modem directly to my computer during the install, so I have to reset the modem back to its default to take it out of bridge mode.  After I do that, I don't get internet connection on the modem.  The light just sits red. I let it sit for awhile and still nothing.  I checked the settings and everything is back to default.  I get tired and put it back in bridge mode and hook it back up to my old router and it works.  I tried to install the new router plugged in with the modem in bridge but it wont detect the internet connection.  For some reason the modem only wants to work with my old router and nothing else.

  • Verizon DSL, Westell 6100 modem/router, and Airport Extreme

Useful info so you won't have to go through what I did.
Verizon ISP using the Westell 6100 modem/router & Airport Extreme.
The Westell 6100 was configured during installation as a modem and router with a direct connection to the Mac. You can actually connect Airport Extreme at this point with an ethernet connection to the Westell and it will work, but you can't do any of the sharing things (remote login, personal web sharing, etc.) To do those things the Westell needs to be in the Bridge mode. In a nutshell, you have to edit the Westell's VC configuration to establish Bridge mode, and disable its DHCP server. Then you have to set up the Airport to connect using PPPoE using the Account Name and Password from Verizon.
    1. With the Westell connected directly to the Mac, access the device at 192.168.1.1.
    a. Under VC Configuration the first of seven configurations should already be enabled as VPI 0, VCI 35 using PPPoE. Edit that one and change it to Bridge mode.
    b. Under DHCP configuration, disable the DHCP server. You can also do this under the Private LAN Configuration page. If at the latter, do not attempt to disable the Private LAN (it won't let you anyway). Verizon tech support kept insisting I had to disable the Private LAN, which caused a great amount of anguish!
    c. Before leaving 192.168.1.1 (you won't be able to access it again once the Airport is connected and configured) make sure you know your ISP account name and password. This was assigned during my setup procedure with Verizon, a random selection of letters and numbers.
    2. Now hook up the Airport WAN to the Westell's ethernet port and the Mac to the Airport LAN. Fire up Airport Admin Utility.
    a. Under the Internet tab, select Connect Using PPPoE.
    b. Configure PPPoE using the Verizon Account Name.
    c. Change password to the Verizon account password.
    3. Restart and that's it.

Thank you for your post. When I moved to another home, Verizon sent me the Westell 6100 and I had been having trouble staying connected to the Internet with my Airport. Last night, I loss wireless access and the Airport status in the menu bar read "Looking for a PPPoE connection". Verizon customer support was able to get me back online, albeit with only a direct Ethernet connection between my iBook and the 6100.
I found your post and followed your instructions. Now all the iBooks in our household are back online via the Airport. Thank you very much!

  • What is going on? Westell 6100 keeps turning on and off and now there's new software for modem?

Recently, I've been having problems with my internet connection. No big whoop-- I would just power cycle the modem or reset it to default or whatever.
Then this morning I woke up to find that I could no longer control the modem (Westell 6100)  at all (reset the modem) and that every few minutes it will keep going through the process of turning on, then turning off. In other words, the lights will all turn on like "normal (power, ethernet, dsl, internet)", I'll have internet access for a few minutes, then the lights will all turn back off, then back on again. Wash, rinse, repeat.
I thought I was or suffering a virus until I accessed "http://192.168.1.1/", only to see new Verizon software installed (ProLine DSL???)  for the first time in maybe the 8 years I've had high speed internet. Is this repetitive cycle of turning on and off just something that's just a temporary thing or is my internet now completely screwed?
    What's going on?
    Solved!

Verizon more than likely updated your modem's firmware and this as a result, messed it up causing it to go into a constant reboot. Give the modem a reset to Factory Defaults, holding in the reset button for 30 seconds to clear the modem configuration file to rule out any problems being caused by that. If it's still rebooting and you cannot update the firmware by any means (the trick to doing this is to wait until the modem is fully booted and you are at the modem's firmware upgrade page before attempting to flash it!), get another modem from Verizon or purchase your own.
To update the modem's firmware, you'd need to visit http://192.168.1.1/ , choose Advanced and then choose Firmware Upgrade. You will need to have a firmware file from Verizon ready to install to the modem via the browser. You will be prompted for a Username and Password to do this, so try one of the following if you wish to try:
    admin/password
    admin/password1
    admin/admin
    admin/admin1
    Your Verizon Username and Password.
Please note that if you reset the modem to factory defaults, the Username and password WILL be admin/password. You will need to change this when the modem asks you to do this.

  • The connection between a Westell 6100 DSL modem and my new Apple Extreme is not stable.

My new airport extreme and a Westell 6100 DSL modem are connecting, but the wifi is now slow and unstable.  How do I configure the modem and Airport Extreme so that they function together better?

The resason that the password shows long key length after clicking save settings is just for security purpose so that password can not be rechecked .....so you don't have to worry about the lenght of your DSL password ....it is correct even after saving the settings.....
Now as you said that Modem is already  under bridge ..... & you are trying to use PPPOE settings on router .... in that case you should get Internet Ip address under status tab of router after clicking connect .....as you are getting the error message "cannot get an Ip from PPPOE server"  ..... i assume that Modem is not configured under 100% Bridge Mode.....
Check once again with your Internet service provider if the modem is in Bridge mode or not....

  • Linksys router no longer works with Westell 6100 modem

    Hi all,
I came back after a 3 month work absence (and many days power outages, according to the neighbors), to find that my system can no longer connect to the internet using the Verizon Westell 6100 modem to a Linksys wrt54G router to 2 PCs!
I reset the Westell modem and directly connected the PC to it and THAT works okay, but put the router back in the mix (so I can connect my other PC) and nothing works!
I have read on this forum about 'Bridgeing" the Westell modem but nothing about setting up the router.
Can someone PLEASE give me explicit instructions on how to:
1.)  set up the Westell modem in this "Bridge" mode,
2.)  Set up the Linksys router to work with the modem again??
3.)  Tell me why the old setup no longer works, did verizon change something for this modem?
Thank you VERY much for your help in this matter!
    SUE  ;>)

the router has two connections.  one is called a WAN and that is a wide area network, and it means the internet in your case.  and one is called a LAN, local area network.
what you saw means - that the way you connect to your internet is through PPPoE, a username and a password.
and then way your LAN connects is DHCP,  how all of your local computers connect.  This is important, because after you bridge the westell, you will be setting your Linksys up for PPPoE connection, and NOT DHCP.      if you don't do this step, then you will never connect.
that is fine, and normal.  if you follow the instructions at the link provided - you will be able to connect real easily.
you will want to bridge the westell just follow the instructions for "If your Westell uses the red and black Verizon firmware:"

  • Photosmart D110a Wireless Troubleshooting with D-Link DIR-655 and Mac OSX 10.8

    Good evening all,
Apologizes if this has already been posted. I've googled this issue a couple of times, but I still haven't found a solution for this problem.
I have the Photosmart D110a and I'm running Mac OSX Mountain Lion, and my router is a D-Link DIR-655 and my security is WPA-Personal and the router is running in 802.11gn mode. My ISP is Optimum Online.
The issue that I've been having is that the printer works wireless when everything has been recently booted up. As does the scanner. However, if it hasnt been used for a while, the printer shows up in the OSX Print & Scan settings page as idle, but when I try to print, the dialog just says "looking for printer" and never finds it, and just says "The printer is not connected" under the item in the OSX Print Queue. Because of this, I have to restart the computer or restart the printer for them to find each other again.
I've seen other solutions on here, such as giving the printer a static IP address, and this hasn't worked either. The printer is still accessible with the static IP address, which means it's still got a connection to my network, but for some reason the OS isn't recognizing it or something.
It's obvious that the printer works when everything is freshly rebooted, but I still haven't been able to figure out this issue once it's been idle for a while.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Hi,
Try following my post below, I believe it might be relevant as the router drops the Bonjour connection:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/losing-connection-to-airprint-a-few-min...
I would also suggest updating your router's firmware and check if that may help:

For any help with this proccess I would highly recommend contacting Dlink support.

  • How to replace westell 6100 with westell 327w?

    Hi all,
I am currently using a Westell 6100 and I just inherited a Westell 327W from my brother who switched over to FIOS.
Can I replace the 6100 with the 327W? And how do I go about doing that?
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

If the 327w has newer firmware on it, you can just factory reset it and then connect it up. Once it is online, visit http://192.168.1.1/ and use admin/password respectively as the login information. Then, set a new password for the gateway.
Once done, visit http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm and choose the disable button. Assuming the modem has been able to get a connection at this time, you should be online.

  • Switch from Westell 2200 to Westell 6100

I am beyond frustrated. I was using the westell 2200 until it stopped working and was sent a westell 6100.  I cannot connect with the 6100 to my dell desktop because it does not have a ethernet drive. I was using the usb connection without any problems. Called tech support and nothing is resolved.
Is there a way for the westell 6100 to connect using the usb connection?  I was told to plug the ethernet cord to the modem and the usb to the computer, still no connection.  I would like to have my internet again.
    Someone please help me. Thanks.

    Ok.
    Cancel that.
    Go to http://www.westell.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=191&arcsection=support

  • Trying to config a Dlink 655 router with a ActionTec

    Hello-
I have the FIOS Triple Play Internet/TV/Phone). I desperately want to upgrade to Wireless N and run 1GB hard wired connections to my internal network. Is there any way to do this? It seems that I am stuck using the ActionTec router supplied by Verizon, does anyone know of verizon coming out with a router that will support both 1GB and Wireless N? Sounds to good to be true! Unfrotunately one thing is is stopping me from installing the Dlink 655 is that I have coax cable coming in from the outside box supplied by Verizon.

I use a Dlink DGL4500 with my Actiontec. It is basically the same a a DIR-655.
I have the WAN port of my DLINK connected to the Actiontec. Then I set up a DMZ in the Actiontec for my DLINK router. The Actiontec assigned 192.168.1.2 for my Dlink so I assigned that IP address to the DMZ. Then the Dlink has full access to the internet without the Actiontec interfering. And you just use the DLink like you normally would. I have my wireless turned off in my Actiontec and only use my Dlink for wireless N and G. And my 36+ devices are all connected through my Dlink on my home network. Of course the FIOS STB still gets it's info from the Actiontec over MoCA. But I have been using my Actiontec this way for over 13 months now. First with A Dlink DGL4300 and now with my Dlink 4500.

  • I have a Westell 6100, Can i request for a Westell 327W?

When I started using Verizon High Speed internet, 2 yrs ago. They gave me a Westell Model 6100 modem in the starter kit. I recently got a laptop and also other devices that use wi-fi. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a Westell 327W modem from verizon?

I am not sure if you can request a Westell 327W. You can maybe tell them that you have Wireless, and would like a new modem combo that has built in wireless.
In the meantime as you wait for another answer...
#1 It does help to know that you can go to a store and buy a new modem combo that has wireless.
For example: If you go to http://www.circuitcity.com/ -> Computers & Office -> Networking & Internet -> Installation kits -> and then you can select the "Actiontec Wireless DSL Gateway/Starter Kit for Verizon (GT704WGV)"
This example is a modem combo that has wireless, and Verizon will support.
I am not saying that you should go to a store (online or in person), buy a modem combo with Wireless, supported by Verizon (or otherwise), or even buy that Specific router.
    Moving along....
#2 Does the 6100 modem combo have only one or at least two LAN ports?
    #3 Are you NATTED?
This means for example on Windows:
    a) Go to Start -> Run.
    b) Type in cmd
    and press enter.
    c) In the new window, called the command prompt: Type in ipconfig /all
    and press enter.
If you are not on Windows, please post and someone will help you...
#4 If the IP address found is one of the following three important ranges, you are NATTED.
    a) 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
    b) 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
    c) 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
#5 If NATTED, is there any device that is between the Westell 6100 and your computer? b) If so, what is the brand and model of it?

  • Verizon Turbo Dsl plan with Westell 6100 modem? Help?

So I have a westell 6100 modem and on the 7th I upgraded my bundle i had 1 Mbps for Internet , verizon homephone freedom essentials, and Directv. Since fios is not available were I live. And my new bundle is Verizon Dsl 7.0-1 Mbps turbo plan, verizon essentials and directv for $115.00. My question is will my modem provison the speed correct? will it still work? Or do I have to buy a new modem? Thanks!.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you have been using the 6100 previously then the modem should sync to the new speed automatically.  If yareou still using an old style flat phone cable from the jack to the modem it may not be capable of the faster speed.  The round tan colored cable which originally was supplied with the modem would be the one to use.  I moved up recently from 3 to the turbo 7.1 via ASDL2plus and found that Verizon at my location has capped the speed at about 5.5.  Their out is to say speeds up to 7.1.

  • AE & Verizon DSL with Westell 6100 Configuration Settings Question

    Hello,
Has anyone configured their Airport Extreme with Verizon DSL using a Westell 6100 modem in the last few months? I'm wondering if you have any particular tips or have a set of screen shots of the process. I'm walking my mother through the process remotely and having some issues. Any help would be appreciated!
I'm specifically wondering whether I have to set the modem into bridge mode first, then use the AE to log into Verizon service via PPoE? Do I need to call Verizon & tell them my AE's MAC address first?
    Thank you,
    Chris

Is there an "Airport Extreme User's Guide"? When I look at the manuals available for download under Apple's support page for Airport Extreme and Airport Express, I see a "Airport Extreme Card User's Guide," but not one for those of us with Airport Extreme base stations. Am I missing something?
My Verizon DSL (also via Westell 6100 DSL modem, just like Chris') works fine with my desktop, but when I power up a G3 iBook, I have to wait forever for it to boot if it's in range of my home network. I'm trying to fix that problem, so I'm wondering if I need to reexamine the way my DSL modem and base station are configured, just like Chris.

  • MacBook Pro, wireless dlink 655 problem

I have a MacBook Pro, 10.5.4, and a dlink n wireless DIR-655 router. My wireless connection used to work great, but now it doesn't. The pages will load normally for a few minutes, then stop, and eventually my connection will be dropped.
Everyone else on the network has a PC, and they are not experiencing any problems. We've downloaded the latest dlink firmware.
    Does anyone have any solutions?

I too have a DIR-655 and running 10.5.4 on my MacBook Pro and having similar issues. The DIR-655 has the latest firmware. It sometimes hangs loading pages or they will finally load after a 30-40 seconds, even when in the same room with the router. The MacBook Pro works fine on other networks not running N. I changed the router settings to just allow G and all works fine. I'm searching for another router.

  • AirPort connection to Westell 6100

Does the Westell 6100 DSL modem need to be "bridged" when working with an AirPort Extreme (older model)? I have been using a Westell 2200 with Verizon DSL for several years and just tried to upgrade to a 6100. VZ tech support had me first connect the 6100 via ethernet directly to the iMac to set up the modem. Made it through all the steps with online VZ tech support, only to find that when I then moved the ethernet cable back to the AirPort, and tried to connect via AirPort through the 6100, nothing happened. I was able to reconfigure the set up with the old 2200 to restore my connection, but the 6100 should give me faster speed at my location. VZ tech said the issue may be that they always have the 6100 set to bridge when a wireless router is used, but were not familiar with the Air Port. I don't recall "bridging" the 2200 when that was set up. Any suggestions? (and I thought this would be a simple swap of one modem for another!)

Your 6100 will have to be in bridged mode with DHCP turned off. Run the Airport in PPPoE and make sure Private Lan is off in the Westell too. If you don't connect right away to the internet, give it some time for the DHCP to release.

  • Airport Extreme with Westell 6100

    The setup:
    Westell 6100 through Centurytel
    Apple Airport Extreme Base Station
    The goal:
To use 6100 as a bridge only and manage all port forwarding and routing through Airport.
    The problem:
I've set it to bridge and DHCP disable. I then try to do PPOE through my Airport. This disables my net connection. Then Airport Setup says that my IP range conflicts with the WAN IP, regardless of what range I use. Any ideas?

if the airport is only picking up a local IP address as its WAN ip then our westell modem is not truly a bridge.
To rule out an issue with the airport connect the westell in bridge mode to your mac and run the PPPoE client on the mac and see if that connects.
