DM3 1035DX Hard Drive Failure.....Need to reload operating system on new HD but how?

I have a DM3-1035dx which had a hard drive failure.  When you turn it on it starts booting up and then shuts off and restarts. I took out the HD and then got to the point where it asked for the operating system so I am pretty sure the HD is the problem.  I can get into set up and change the boot sequence but what should I boot to? I don't have a floppy or CD drive although I would get a usb drive it it will work.  I also don't have recovery disks just the windows product key? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Put the hard drive back in and go into the BIOS (press F10 when you see the HP splash screen on bootup) and navigate to the Diagnostics Tab, then select Memory and/or Hard Drive tests and see if either of those return an error.
If there is no error try a hard reset.  You can do this by removing the battery and unplugging the AC Adapter. Then press and hold the power button on the laptop for about 30 seconds, then put the battery back in and plug in the AC Adapter and try turning it on again.

They already damaged you Mac by fooling with the BootCamp partition without knowing what they were doing. I wouldn't suggest haveing them help you do anything.
Here is the article that describes the Recovery HD: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
First, see if you can boot into the Recovery HD. Restart and hold down cmd-r until you see the gray screen. It should boot into Recovery. If your Mac shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, it will boot into Internet Recovery if it cannot boot into the Recovery HD on the hard drive.
They should have tried this at the store.

    Many thanks lllaass,
The Touch Copy third party software for PC's is the way to go it seems and although the demo is free, if you have over 100 songs then it costs £15 to buy the software which seems not a lot to pay for peace of mind. and restoring your iTunes library back to how it was.

  • How do I back up files to external hard drive in order to upgrade operating system?

How do I back up files to external hard drive in order to upgrade operating system?

Buy yourself a portable hard drive from WD or the like.  It should have a capacity at least twice that of your machine hard drive.  Then follow the instructions that come with it; it is quite straightforward.
I have a similar machine to you by the sound of it.   After the initial back up, it is just a matter of topping up every couple of months or so, plus whenever you do to back up any major upgrade.
A portable one is good because you can store it with relatives when not in use which gives protection in the case of fire or theft.
I use two backups.   One, an external HD permanently connected for my Time Machine and the second, a portable for the reasons I gave.

  • After hard drive failure, need to sync data

Following a hard drive failure I need to re-establish syncing between my desktop and Firefox Home on my iPhone. None of the routines for "add a device" or "my account" seem to work as advertised. "Settings" on my iPhone shows me signed in but gives me no other options, e.g., the option to open my account. The only buttons on the "Settings" page are "Sign Out," "About," and "Refresh." "Sign Out" warns me that doing so will erase all my data on the iPhone. Any suggestions how to re-establish Firefox Home appreciated.

    Hi!
It seems that your iPhone is properly connected to the Sync server and that you need to add your computer to your previous account. In order to do so:
    # At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP) and then click Options. . In the Options window, click on the Sync tab.
    # Click Set Up Firefox Sync
    # Under I already have a Firefox Sync account click Connect and then select "I don't have the device with me" just below the three boxes.
If you have already created a new account in your computer and you want to log in with your Firefox Home application, "Sign out" and set up the application again. The data you are going to lose is the one in Firefox Home. If you have restored the information in your desktop browser the data will appear in your iPhone once the sync is done.
Unfortunately, Firefox Home doesn't have the ability to send the bookmarks stored there to your computer so if you need to restore them in your computer and you don't have the Sync Key to restore the account in your computer, your only option is to copy them manually.
I hope this information helps you.

  • My mac book pro does not start but has error message with a question mark on screen. took it in and was told probably the hard drive as could not reconize it so bought new one but still not connecting.what do i do

My mac book pro does not connect but shows an error message with a question mark on the screen.I took it to a retailer that said it was not reconizing the hard drive. He said i needed a new hard drive but it may be something else as well but he was sure a new hard drive would fix it.So putting faith in someone who deals with them i purchased a new hard drive to find it was still not working although he said the computer did know reconize the hard drive and i may have to send it away to get it checked .After already paying 120 pounds for a new hard drive and they wanting another 80.00 pounds to diagnose it i am a little sceptical.
That's why i am interested on anyone's help.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I think that your Mac detects your hard disk, but the problem is that your new hard disk doesn't contain any operating system, so your Mac doesn't find any bootable partition and you see a question mark.
If your Mac came with DVDs, insert the Mac OS X Install DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting. Then, just install Mac OS X. If the hard disk isn't prepared to install Mac OS X, you will have to erase it using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". See > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html

  • Satellite L350-12C - hard drive failure, need recovery

Please help. I have Toshiba Satellite L350-12c and its a German model. My hard drive failed.
The local Toshiba repair centre said they can replace the hard drive but without the disc they cant restore it to working order.
The worst part is its still under warranty but Toshiba is refusing to help me. The only place I can order discs is from Europe who wont accept an American credit card and mailing address which kills me because I have another laptop from Germany and they sent me discs with no issue.
The local shop even contacted the local rep and she was no help. Please help frustrated Toshiba customer.

Sorry i have a german l350-12c that was purchased in the UK. it has a 2 year international warrnty and i live in the united states. toshiba of usa insist they will do nothing to help. the local toshiba dealer is been very helpful they spoke to a toshiba of america rep and still was told their was nothing they can do. this model was not built for the us market. the local shop is willing to fix it if i get the original restore disc. without that their not willing because they say they dont have access to the drivers and the special fixes that would be ont the disc.which is the stuff that makes all the little functions work, Plus without the disc theirs no way to set up the recovery partation, which is damaged due to the harddrive failure. theirs ways it could be peaced together but they wont do the warrnty work without being able to fix it. if they just swapped the harddrive i guess i could manage but that realy blows seeing i have warrnty which is suppose to be honored even in the us. when i call toshiba of uk they say they cant send the disc to the us. but yet through my work we get things from simens in germay on a regular basis.so im completely at a lose thanks for any help.

  • Computer Hard Drive Crashed - Need to Transfer from IPod to New Computer

The hard drive died on my old PC as I was transferring files to the new PC. Most data made it but my daughter's ITunes was not one of the things that made it. Fortunately the tunes all still exist on her IPod. How do I transfer them on to the new computer and ensure the music all makes it? She has a combination of music purchased from ITunes and music from CDs. Her IPod is an older mono screen model but I believe we had ITunes 6.x or later on the old machine if that makes a difference.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • I have an old hard drive from a ruined computer attached to my new one but i cant find my old bookmarks which i want to install on the new machine. help please!

my old computer was running vista, and i had hundreds of bookmarks in many folders, but i cant find these when exploring the old drive. I presume i cant use the import facility as i wouldnt be able to access the firefox browser itself on the old drive, but i was hoping the bookmarks would be stored somewhere accessible

thanks for the suggestions weather15 - the firefox help site you directed me to explains what ought to happen but i cant make it work. I shut my firefox browser on my new machine and attach the hard drive from my old machine. I can explore the contents of that drive but when i search it for the suggested folder " %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\" nothing is found. when i try and open firefox from the old drive, the browser opens that is the new version that i have on my new computer with no saved bookmarks! Am I doing everything right?

The aftermarket memory you installed doesn't meet the specifications for your model (1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM.) Reinstall the original memory, or install new memory of the right type.

  • Hard Drive Failure... is it just me?

OK some would say to have one hard drive failure is unlucky, to have two fail is careless but three failures make me think we have a problem. So now my MacBook goes back for repair, before that my MacBook Air, before that my MacBook Pro... no problem, all the data is backed up on www.mesh.com, I can't rely on MobileMe, I just have to make do until it returns. I am a pretty heavy user of my Macs, but they seem to fail far more often than they use to.
I don't need advice... but I strongly suggest that you back up your data and probably to something that does not use an Apple supplied Hard Drive.
Perhaps someone could publish the MTBF so that I would know when I should replace the drives before they fail.

Well this is a long-standing issue with Mac OS X along with Linux. [This|http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=591503&highlight=harddriveclick] thread on the Ubuntu forums has 90 pages of discussion and it isn't the only thread about the issue. [This|http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5030999] thread continues the discussion from the other post. It talks about using tools like hdparm (hdapm on Macs) in order to reset the power management of the drive and stop the idle clicking.
