Dmg file and finder issue

Hi,
Since I have upgraded my Macbook pro to Yosemite I have experienced several issues each time I have install/upgrade an application (.app file) from an dmg file.
Example with calibre application from http://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx
or google chrome.
I have downloaded the latest version, then open the dmg image by double clicking on it (Because I have unchecked the default option "Open safe file after downloading" in Safari), but impossible to drag and drop the new app file in the Application folder. No error message is displayed.
If I try to unmount the dmg file, then I get an error message.
The only workaround I have found is to perform a Force/Relaunch of the Finder. Then everything is working fine!
Any idea how to avoid this issue or is it just a bug?

Double-clicking on a disk image (.dmg file) mounts the image (treats it like inserting a disk) and puts a disk icon on your desktop. Once this is done, you may treat that icon in most every respect as a disk (it's common to make read-only images, so you might not be able to write/copy files to it).
In the case of installing an application, there are two basic procedures on a Mac:
1.) Double-click on a package icon (looks like a stylized cardboard box) and a wizard will guide you through the process much like Windows users experience.
2.) Find an icon for an application, and drag it to /Applications (click on the icon for it and hold the button down while you move it). If you don't have the Applications folder open, you can simply drag the icon onto the Macintosh HD icon and hold it there for a couple of seconds, then window will open and you'll see the Applications folder where you can drop the file (onto the Applications folder icon).
To eject the disk image, simply click on the icon for the mounted image, and press command-E (E for 'eject'), right-click or control-click on the icon and select 'Eject' from the pop-up menu, or drag the icon into the trashcan on the dock.
After you've unmounted the disk image, you can do whatever you like with the disk image file.

I knew I'd seen the solution you've provided somewhere - either in MacWorld or MacFormat - but couldn't remember the Gatekeeper bit!

FYI Mac OS X is not designed to be installed on additional Macs, unless you purchased it from the App Store, in which case you can make as many copies as you wish and install it on as many Macs as you own.

.dmg file crashes Finder

I have a .dmg file that crashes Finder after mounting. The mounted image icon appears on the desktop, but not in the Finder window sidebar. When I try and open Finder crashes and starts up again.
I have tried verifying and repairing the file in Disk Utility and everything checks out fine.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Just to add a bit to Niel's coolest solution for this problem I have seen yet:
1. You will want to relaunch Finder to create a new Desktop folder: just hold down the option key and click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select relaunch
2. You can then move any good files you had out of the OldDesktop folder back into the newly created Desktop folder
3. You can then toss the OldDesktop folder with the offending files into the trash
And Niel: bravo! Finally a decent solution the Finder-Desktop problem! This is GREAT!

Mis-understanding dmg files and installing apps

Hi All.
I'm realizing I have never understood how to use a dmg properly and how to dispose of it.
Normally I download some piece of software and I guess I double click on the dmg and it installs? Then I eject the dmg and it goes away?
Sometimes when I click open a app I get a prompt that says that this file has been downloaded from the internet and do you want to continue. I /think/ this is accompanied by my seeing a dmg icon for the app on my desktop?
I can't quite figure out if I have done something wrong when this happens.
Can anyone help/

I mount drive to see them but I just want to use the software and the dmg is just getting in my way.

If you are attempting to run (launch) the software you see on the dmg directly from that dmg, the finder isn't going to let you eject that dmg (e.g., dragging to trash, right-click dmg and eject) because the app on that dmg is currently open. Is that what your problem is?
We may be mis-communicating past each other here. You open the dmg and drag its contents to some place and execute the app (or whatever) from that place, not the dmg. Alternatively, you press the option key and while it is pressed drag the dmg icon to some place to make a copy of the dmg as a folder in the finder.
Maybe I previously omitted the pressing of the option key when dragging the dmg icon. Without the option key you would be making an alias which you don't want. With the option key pressed, when you drag the dmg icon you should see a little plus sign on the icon pointer indicating you are doing a copy. Perhaps you were making an alias and trashing the alias which of course does not affect the mounted dmg icon image.

Downloading dmg file and Mounting Failed ??

hi,
i might have messed up with the files on my ibook.
i somehow deleted previous users account and created mine As Admin. ..... however deleted user account is in deleted user folder as dmg file.
now when i log in my account as admin and download something > then Disk copier helper opens > then installation >> and finally Message comes .. Mounting Failed ( error 95 ).
this happened when i tried to download and install dmg file from internt
it also says that there is no file folder to handle this file
How can i fix mounting problem on my User Account as Admin.

I'm on the same boat. I called Apple Support. They made me clean cache, create a new user, yada yada yada. Nothing helped. Last resort was to re-install OSX Snow 10.6.2
I did so, doing an ERASE then moving files/programs back from Time Machine. Right after OS was just installed, I was able to download anything. After I did an upgrade to the latest combo patch to 10.6.2 I was back in "no download land"
I have Google Chrome (no dice), FireFox (no dice)....
Help! I don't want to have to re-install everything again!

.dmg files and adobe

Hi,
I have tried downloading a trial version of Adobe Photoshop from their website and it says that it's unable to open the .dmg file. I have already tried to make it open with the diskimagemounter and that doesn't work. Anything?

Try downloading it again. It also could be a corrupted file on their end.

DW CS3 locked files and FTP issues - cannot update pages

I just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 and now cant seem to
update any of my web pages. I can connect to the server etc and see
my files locally & remotely but when I try check out a file to
update it I get an error message saying 'index.html is a locked
file and can be viewed but not changed'. All I can do with it is
view it. When I try to unlock any files locally nothing happens????

done this*, then recreate the child pages (in DWCS3) using
FILE | New > Page
from Template, select the template and click CREATE.
The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced >
Recreate Site
Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing
them. Have you

Firefox won't save DMG files and won't mount the disk image. Why?

When I try to install a download I am asked to either save the DMG file or Open using .... I select save, but the disk image never appears on my desktop and nothing shows in the Tools-Downloads window.

DMG files and Windows XP

I have an ipod touch and have installed the software. I notice I have some *.dmg files in a folder called C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Temporary Files\*.dmg.
Do I need to keep these or can they be deleted?

You are not in the Safe Mode, you are in the Offline Mode. I don't know what OS are you on since it doesn't show in your system details:
If you see a Firefox icon, click on it and then go to:
File > UNCHECK the Offline Mode
If you have a Menu Bar instead, do the same.
