.dmg file crashes Finder

I have a .dmg file that crashes Finder after mounting. The mounted image icon appears on the desktop, but not in the Finder window sidebar. When I try and open Finder crashes and starts up again.
I have tried verifying and repairing the file in Disk Utility and everything checks out fine.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Just to add a bit to Niel's coolest solution for this problem I have seen yet:
1. You will want to relaunch Finder to create a new Desktop folder: just hold down the option key and click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select relaunch
2. You can then move any good files you had out of the OldDesktop folder back into the newly created Desktop folder
3. You can then toss the OldDesktop folder with the offending files into the trash
And Niel: bravo! Finally a decent solution the Finder-Desktop problem! This is GREAT!

  • Dmg file and finder issue

    Hi,
Since I have upgraded my Macbook pro to Yosemite I have experienced several issues each time I have install/upgrade an application (.app file) from an dmg file.
Example with calibre application from http://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx
    or google chrome.
I have downloaded the latest version, then open the dmg image by double clicking on it (Because I have unchecked the default option "Open safe file after downloading" in Safari), but impossible to drag and drop the new app file in the Application folder. No error message is displayed.
If I try to unmount the dmg file, then I get an error message.
The only workaround I have found is to perform a Force/Relaunch of the Finder. Then everything is working fine!
Any idea how to avoid this issue or is it just a bug?

Double-clicking on a disk image (.dmg file) mounts the image (treats it like inserting a disk) and puts a disk icon on your desktop. Once this is done, you may treat that icon in most every respect as a disk (it's common to make read-only images, so you might not be able to write/copy files to it).
In the case of installing an application, there are two basic procedures on a Mac:
1.) Double-click on a package icon (looks like a stylized cardboard box) and a wizard will guide you through the process much like Windows users experience.
2.) Find an icon for an application, and drag it to /Applications (click on the icon for it and hold the button down while you move it). If you don't have the Applications folder open, you can simply drag the icon onto the Macintosh HD icon and hold it there for a couple of seconds, then window will open and you'll see the Applications folder where you can drop the file (onto the Applications folder icon).
To eject the disk image, simply click on the icon for the mounted image, and press command-E (E for 'eject'), right-click or control-click on the icon and select 'Eject' from the pop-up menu, or drag the icon into the trashcan on the dock.
After you've unmounted the disk image, you can do whatever you like with the disk image file.

  • AVI files crash Finder and Quicktime

I am trying to put together a video using some .avi files i have on an external hard drive. But every time i try to open the file in quicktime, preview it, or import it into final cut express, it either crashes the finder completely or quicktime gives me error messages such as "mac os error 51","mac os error 1009",or "mac os error 6." i know that quicktime will open these files because i opened them on my macbook pro. Both the imac (the one with problems) and the macbook pro are both up-to-date.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem with avi files, crashing the Finder. In the columns view mode, when I click on them and it should shown the preview, the little gray wheel keeps spinning and the Finder goes up to using almost 100% of the CPU and the avi file is "in use" if I try to delete it. Only solution (that I know of) is to relaunch the Finder.
I have no problems playing the files though, it just takes longer than usual to open the files. I believe it started happening when I updated to Quicktime 7.4, and having read about numerous bugs of this version, I got VLC player and set it as the default program to play .avi files. It had basically fixed the problem for a while (no Finder crashes, still a bit slow but faster than QT) until it started again. So it doesn't seem to be just a Quicktime problem?
PS: Do people from Apple actually give answers in this forum or even read it?

  • .dmg files and Finder windows : preset window size

Sorry for this misplaced question, but I want to create a .dmg disk image similar to those that developers employ to deliver their applications. I know how to embed a custom window background image, but I don't know how to make the window open to a specific size when the .dmg file is opened.

MacKeeper is an exception to the rule that system modifications should be uninstalled according to the developer's instructions. Although not generally recognized as such, MacKeeper is in fact a trojan, because the developer distributes an uninstaller that purports to delete it, but leaves behind something that causes popup ads to appear in the user’s web browser. Try following the instructions here:
how to uninstall MacKeeper « Phil Stokes
I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of those instructions, but others seem to have had success with them.

  • .wma file crashing finder

I can't open or even navigate to a .wma audio file without my finder crashing. I managed to almost get the Get Info to work, and it was halfway through opening the info before the finder froze, and crashed again.
Currently, my finder is non-existent, but Safari still works. I found a similar thread on Apple Discussions (where it was suggested that the Get Info be opened and "Open with" changed to Quicktime.
This is so weird. Not a biggie, but if there's some reason for this happening, I'd love to know why!
Edit: An online convertor doesn't even work, it can't seem to see the .wma file. So weird, I question Microsoft's conniving little schemes.

If EasyWMA converter doesn't work, it probably is a newer version, or has DRM applied to it, preventing conversion.

  • .avi files crash finder and quicktime player after Flip4Mac component mess

The .avi files that are downloaded directly from my camera cause the finder to crash as it tries to preview, they will cause Quicktime Player to quit unexpectedly, and Final Cut Pro will see them as corrupt. The files still open in VLC so I know they aren't corrupt.
I think this may have happened because the stupid 'Flip4Mac' program suggested that I remove some conflicting components. I accidentally lost them and I'm not sure which ones they were.
I tried re-installing Quicktime 7.20, but that didn't seem to do it. Does anybody know which components I should be looking to re-install? Maybe the ones that commonly go with FCP and Quicktime? Or does anyone know which components Flip4Mac will identify as conflicting?

    http://perian.org for your AVI files.
Remove any browser plug-in that has an x in it's name as Perian replaces them (with better compatibility).
I don't use Flip4Mac but what I've read about it suggests it is used by WMP formats (not AVI).
AVI was invented by Microsoft and they discontinued the container nearly ten years ago.

  • Mounting .dmg files?

    Dear Forum,
Having imported the .dmg files from DVD.
I'm unable to install CS3 .dmg files on my Mac G5.
With the .dmg in the applications folder I double click on the .dmg file in finder. The file appears to mount. Then in finder Go I select computer and double click on the CS3 Icon. Then the setup Icon appears I double click on it and a window appears saying "System Requirements Error This software cannnot be installed because the file system of the OS Volume is not supported".
    Assistance please.

O.K. I know this sounds weird.
I'm planning to do a clean install of Leopard with the Internal HD formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
There are 2 HD Icons in Disk Utility. 1. Mac HD 2. 149.1 GB Samsung SP1614C
When I highlight the Mac HD Icon in Disk Utility and select Erase the Mac HD reads as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) The only option highlighted if Erase Free Space.
When I highlight the 149.1 GB Samsung SP1614C Icon in Disk Utility and select erase the Samsung reads as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive Journaled) There are no options highlighted.
    Can you explain that?

  • Applications crashing after / trying to save files - access finder

    Hi
I am having problems with Snow Leopard. Any application which seems to access the finder to store/retrieve files crashes. I can repeat this to make the error occur.
    Example
Create a new mail and add an attachment then cancel it - crash
Create a new mail add an attachment and click add - likely crash
    Fireworks
Export an image - crash after about 2-3 exports
    Xcode
Add files into a project - select some....crash
    Safari
    Save a PDF of a page....you guessed it - crash !
I've ran disk permissions, checked the disk and at somewhat of a loss to explain what is occurring ! The only thing I can think of is that somehow the finder part of snow leopard is corrupt for my install over leopard - I never had this problem in Leopard.
    Any help much appreciated.

Alternatively, there's a conflict or corruption amongst the original preference files (plists) that you need to resolve. While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Disk Utility crashes and dmg files won't mount

My girlfriend's Powerbook has been acting up for a while now, and we still can't seem to get it working properly.
One day, her Adobe programs just stopped working. Tried several things, but nothing worked and she ended up reinstalling OSX. That fixed the problem, but then she noticed she could no longer open DMG files. Accordingly, she tried to run Disk Utility but then found that it would always crash when trying to open.
She ran Disk Utility from the install disc, but nothing turned up. She also tried looking up several methods of fixing the DMG problem (deleting various files), but nothing's worked.
If I remember correctly, she also tried using the 10.3.9 combo updater some time ago, but that didn't help. We're actually not totally sure about that, so we're trying to reinstall the 10.3.9 combo updater, except for the fact that Apple has only made the file available as a DMG (which she obviously can't open).
So can anyone please help us get Disk Utility to stop crashing, and get those DMG files to open/mount? I have the crash logs but they're huge, so I'm not so sure if I should post them. Thanks everyone!
PS. I can open DMG files for her using MagicISO (I'm on a PC), but it's a bit of a pain transferring those larger files to her.
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What files did you try deleting? If you don't know what a file does or why you're messing around with it, you shouldn't; that's just asking for trouble.
Let's assume for the moment that you have a corrupted preferences file. To find out, go to Users/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.DiskUtility.plist file and drag it to the Desktop. Now relaunch Disk Utility and see if the problem continues. If not, then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions, and then you can Trash the file on your Desktop.
You should also use your OS X install disc to boot the system and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk, to see if there are any problems. If it reports any errors that it can fix, keep running it until no more are reported.
If there's an error that it cannot fix, stop using your system immediately and make a backup of everything; then get a disk utility such as DiskWarrior to see if it can fix your drive. If your drive cannot be repaired, you will need to replace the internal drive and restore from your backup (if you have one).
    Hope this helps,
    Mulder

  • .dmg files no longer open in the finder

I just did an archive and reinstall (to solve some unrelated problems). Most things seem fine, but now .dmg files show up on the desktop without any icon, and when I double click them they open Disk Utility instead of mounting in the finder.
It's possible to mount them from within disk utility by selecting the .dmg file and clicking on "open" ... but this is an odd bunch of extra steps, and it seems like something's wrong.
in get info I tried to change the default app to the Finder, but it wouldn't let me.
I've repaired permissions, rebuilt the directory with disk warrior, restarted, etc. .. no luck.
    any thoughts?

The application to choose in "get info" >>"open with" is "DiskImageMounter".

  • Can't find .dmg file Disk Utility shows is there

I've been trying to clean up/gain space on my G4-12" PowerBook. In Disk Utility it shows a .dmg file that when mounted is an audio CD I received from a friend a couple of years ago. I imported the songs from it at the time, ejected, and that was that. Now I see in Disk Utility that this dmg holds ±500mb of space, but I can't find it to delete it. This is quite strange and never happened before. Find, Spotlight, EasyFind (including looking for invisibles), etc. cannot locate it. In Disk utility it shows the path as /Volumes/<name>, implying it is mounted. Upon clicking 'Open' it mounts the <AudioCD> which then shows up in the left side of my Finder windows. I can open this volume, click on a song and it plays, so it is clear that it does exist and not just an artifact. I can eject the AudioCD and it disappears. But I can't get to the .dmg file to make it go away.
Any ideas on this are greatly appreciated as I've run out of paths to try....but I've not dipped into Terminal so would greatly prefer an alternative if it exists. Thanks in advance!

Have you done a Find/Search using just dmg, rather than a search for the file name?
