.dmg files, keep or delete

Exploring files today, I find .dmg files in odd places.
Not sure what to do with them.
Thanks

Great Thanks.
I figured they might be important.
One in question was iPhoto 801.
Quite strange, folder in random pick,
found .dmg file mixed in with a folder of mixed documents and images.
I think I better do a system search of .dmg and do as you suggested.
Thanks

  • A 56 gb .dmg file in my deleted user folder

I have a G5 tower running os 10.3 with 150GB of space. I am running out of room on my had drive because I have a file named melindabeck.dmg (my name) in my deleted users file that is 56 GB.
    1. What is this file?
    2. Can I get rid of it without endangering my user folder (admin)?
    3. How do I delete it?
    Thanks, Melinda

Melinda.. it looks like you created a new user account and then deleted the old user account...if everything is ok with the user account you are using...you can delete the old account (drag it to the Trash) ......which is located at....
    HD/Users/Deleted (Folder)
Did you do perform similar procedure such as this....
    Accounts<Deleting User .... using System Preferences (p29)
    • You must be booted up in your Admin account before attempting this.

    • You can not delete your Admin Account using this method.
    1. Choose System Preferences from Apple Menu and click "Accounts"
    2. Select the user account you want to delete and click the minus button in the lower pane
    3. A window will pop up asking you if you're sure this is what you want to do. It also gives you a choice as to what should be done

  • DS6 dse.ldif file keeps getting deleted

I am running Directory Server 6.3 on Solaris 10 U7. Last night I applied various system patches - none of them appear to the related to ldap or the directory server. Some times when I shutdown some thing seems to crash and the system does system dump. When I restart directory fails to start. The log shows
Configuration error The default password storage scheme SSHA could not be read
or was not found in the file /opt/ldap/slapd-server1/config/dse.ldif. It is mandatory.
the dse.ldif file is blank. Fortunately the dse.ldif.startOK is OK. It looks like it had been created or modified during a clean shutdown yesterday evening.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks

    HI
I have about 5 GB free on the rpool volume (i.e. /, /opt etc.)
During the patching process (along with trying to get a tape drive working) I rebooted aout 3-4 times. At least twice, it looked like something panicked/crashed/dumped. My guess is that the directory server deleted the existing dse.ldif file, there was a system error, then directory server could not write the new file. it seems odd that at least twice that the crash occured immediately after the file was deleted. Would directory server crash if it can't write files? Server shutdown might take 5 min while various services are closed.
When I stop the ds-myinstance svc with "svcadm" (without rebooting) it looks like it does update dse.ldif (at least time time stamp) , and creates and dse.ldif.bak file. On restarting the service cleanly, the dse.ldif.StartOK file is updated. So it looks like directory server itself is OK but either can't write files because of some other, system-related shutdown issue..
What I may need to try is stopping directory server then shutting down the system and seeing if I get panic/coredumps/file syncs.
    Thanks

  • Can't install anything. Installer on any .pkg file keeps "quiting unexpec."

I'm having problems with not being able to mont .dmg files. keeps retuning error "no child processes". I burnt the combo update to cd with disk utility, but when I try to open the .pkg file on he cd or desktop the installer now quits unexpectedly. I'm at a loss. All this stuff happened since installing the update now I can't do anything to fix it. I tried to repair permissions to no avail. I need some help. thanks.

Your disk directory is hosed. If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or TechTools.

  • Deleting dmg files

There are dmg files and dmg.download files in the download folder. Can I delete these if they are showing up in applications or in other places? If they are in both places is it actually taking up twice the drive space, too? I have several Parallel files too. When you update files do you also need to keep the previous ones? I have had many difficulties and do not want mess up but am running up against space issues. You help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Can I delete these if they are showing up in applications or in other places?
    Yes.
When you update files do you also need to keep the previous ones?
If the update is a software update, older versions of the files updated are usually deleted. If they are document files, no.

  • Can I delete .dmg files off my iMac?

Well, the short version of the question is in the title, but I'll explain further. My iMac, my families main computer, is running out of disc space, and after googling/looking for topics on the issue, I still can't find a clean cut answer to the question "If I delete .dmg files for programs I have already install/use, will the programs become unusable/broken and will my iMac still function properly?". I ask this because, as I said, I'm running out of space and there isn't much else to delete, and I noticed the .dmg files have been taking up a ton of data. I obviously won't just delete all of them willy-nilly, but I mean can I delete ones for updates to Safari or Firefox or iTunes, or even ones for one-time downloads like MSN? Thanks in advance, I just want to be sure on the issue, so far it seems like I safely can if I have installed the application to the applications folder.

You do not have to keep the disc image files you've downloaded (.dmg files.) Doing so will simply free up space. Since the applications were downloaded from internet sources you can always redownload should you lose one.
Drag the .dmg files to the Trashcan on the Dock or select all of them and press COMMAND-DELETE to move all of them to the Trash. Now Empty the Trash to recover the disk space.

  • Do you have to keep .dmg files?

Whenver I download things like programs, a file that ends in .dmg is what i have to click on for the installation to get going. Can I delete this .dmg file without consequence after the installation is complete?

Yes you can...but... if the downloaded software was purchased, you may not be able to download it again without paying again. In the event that you need to do a reinstall at some point, you could be SOL. Even if the software is still available, it may only be in a "newer" version that will not work with the key code you have for the "old" version. For this reason, I usually keep the DMG file along with a text clipping of the key code stashed away on my backup drive.

  • Anyone know how to repair a corrupted .DMG file? I recovered the file using Disk Drill. There are actually 4-6 files I have encrypted into a DMG - now they are back on my desktop (deleted them months ago) and the size is correct (between 500-900 MB each)

I deleted several .mov files a while back that were encrypted into a .dmg file. Using Disk Drill, I was able to recover 5 of these files, roughly 500-900 MB each and successfully moved them to my desktop. When I try to open the .dmg file, the dreaded error message "no mountable file systems" shows up. I have tried various fixes based on searches and none have worked. Are these files just corrupted and unreadable, or is there a way to fix?

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.

  • .dmg files? can I delete?

When installing applications or updates on your Mac, can you delete the .dmg files?
I've installed a few freeware applications such as MSN Messenger, Lab Tick, Flip4Mac, aMSN etc... and also updates for various applications.
Once i've an application installed or updated (and working ok) can I delete the .dmg file?
I've tried to delete the .dmg file for MSN Messenger in the past only to find that it wouldn't work and I'd have to install it again, but i've deleted .dmg files for other applications (as it told me that I could delete if I wanted to after successful installation)
So what can and cannot I do with .dmg files?

    Thanks guys!
I think I had some applications installed incorrectly - when I open MSN, a white drive opend also on the desktop, and the same happened with Firefox, the white drive with a Firefox logo would appear on the desktop anytime I opened these applications.
I think this was because I didn't install some things properly, I think I may have dragged the icons to the task bar along the bottom before adding them to my applications folder. I've uninstalled some applications and reinstalled them correctly and now everything is working fine. I can also delete .dmg files now, because in the past - seeing the applications weren't installed correctly, deleting the .dmg file caused the application to partially uninstall as it was running the incorrectly installed application.
    Problem sorted!

  • Deleted Files keep reappearing

I've tried everything - there are 12 files which after deleted and emptying trash - keep reappearing on my desktop
I've recreated the Trash Bin, ran Chkdsk, started in SAFE Mode and deleted, nothing.  Any ideas on what is causing this and how to remedy?
    thanks

Only have 1 account - that's mine and it is the administrator.
What are these files? (full name & extension?)
When were they created? (date & time?)
By the way - running a machine on just one admin account is a high-risk way of doing things. If something went wrong with this account you would have a huge problem. In these forums we deal with such issues on a daily basis. A spare admin account, fully
tested and documented, is as important as having a spare house key (and for much the same reason!).

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
It sometimes happens. Usually it's the result of a permissions error.
Drag the file out of the trash bin onto your desktop and then run the disk utility, found in the Utilities folder
Select and run, repair permissions and let it run - it takes up to 1/2 hour - and ignore the time-to-complete indicater - it lies
After that, see if you can now delete the .dmg.
If not post back, we have other ways to deal with sticky issues like this.

  • Can't delete MSN and Firefox .dmg files

I can't seem to delete the dmg files from MSN and Firefox after installing. I am able to send it to trash but cannot empty thereafter. Are these not just install files?

Hi, w. Welcome to the Discussions.
I presume you're seeing a warning message similar to the following when attempting to empty the Trash:The operation cannot be completed because the item "diskimagename.dmg" is in use.You have to eject the mounted disk image before you can empty the Trash if you moved the corresponding .dmg file to the Trash. I address that in point 2 below.
Here's what I suspect is happening:
    • You've download an application that is distributed on a disk image. Your browser is set to download files to your desktop. Accordingly, the disk image is saved on your desktop.
    • Your browser is set to open files it considers safe. It mounts the disk image, which also appears on your desktop. On your desktop, an unmounted disk image appears as follows:
Whereas a mounted disk image might look like this:
    • You may also be running the application on the mounted disk image, not actually installing the application.
Here's what you should do when you download an application that is distributed using a disk image:
    1. Install the application you have downloaded from the mounted disk image. Follow the installation instructions provided with the application to install it. Usually this means dragging the application's icon from the mounted disk image to your Macintosh HD > Applications folder. However, some applications are distributed for installation via an installer, either the Mac OS X installer or one bundled with the application. Again, follow the developers instructions for installing the application, often included in a "Read Me" file in the mounted disk image.
    2. After you have installed the application, Eject the mounted disk image by either:
    - Dragging its icon to the Trash.
    - Control-clicking the mounted disk image's icon and selecting "Eject" from the resulting contextual menu.
The mounted disk image's icon will disappear from the desktop.
    3. Finally, drag the disk image to the Trash to remove it from your desktop: it's no longer needed once you've installed the application.
    4. Empty the Trash.
    Good luck!

  • Delete Microsoft .dmg files?

I'm trying to free up some space and I know that some .dmg files are for downloads, but I have a microsoft .dmg file that takes up a little over 1 gb. I'm wondering if it's safe to delete it. Thanks in advance for your help!

    SalemGirl63 wrote:
Having checked the file, it is the microsoft installer (disk image).
It's still too little info. An installer for what?
Do you need that software? Is it the only copy you have?
Select the disk image, get info on it in Finder via 'File > Get info…' Does it have a 'Where From:' section within 'More info'?
That would be the web URL where you downloaded it from - you may be able to redownload it in future, but since we don't know if you have brought software from Microsoft it may be that you need the file and should back it up.
My rule for deleting anything …
if unsure make a copy on another disk for safekeeping.

  • E4200v2 - Files on USB Storage keeps getting deleted

    I have a Linksys E4200v2 is running firmware 2.1.39.145204.
I'm attaching a 3TB Seagate Expansion external hard drive (STBV3000100) to it.
    I've made 2 partitions on the hard drive: a 2TB HFS+, and a 1TB FAT32
My issue is that the at random times, files on my 2TB partition keep getting deleted.
My house runs all macs so we won't need NTFS, but in order to store files larger than 4GB, we want to keep at least a part of the drive using HFS+.
Has anyone encountered a similar issue before? I can't really pinpoint when it happens... sometimes I'll check the hard drive and see that all my folders and files have been deleted. I know it's not much to go on, but hopefully someone has seen something like this...
I have Media Server turned on, and FTP turned off.

I've noticed similar issues with Mac's and NTFS when you disconnect and reconnect USB external drives.
    Recommendations:
    Reformat drive NTFS if necessary.
Once the USB drive is connected to router never disconnect it without using the safe disconnect button or power off the router first.
Only plug the drive back into the Mac as a last resort but instead access it exclusively through the network.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.
