.dmg vs .cdr

ok here is the problem, people are saying when copying a DVD you should select DVD/CD format from disk uility, but when i do that the copies do NOT work on anything. But when i choose .dmg format (compressed) it works, but why are people telling me if you choose .dmg its not going to work on standard players? because it does? And another thing, when i choose .cdr(dvd/cd master) it ask me for a password? why? and what does this password do? does it make it protected? Please help?
Sincerely,
John Cook

John:
Here's an Apple KB document which describes how to copy a DVD that was previously burned DVD-R video discs: How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs. It should give you what you need to know. Once the disk image is created burn it to disk with Disk Utility.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • When should i use .dmg and .cdr?

I am backing my software programs and would like to know if I should use the .cdr or .dmg type?
Does it matter? Are there differences in file sizes?

I agree, I have my TM running as well! I need to check out Super Duper.
Look at Carbon Copy Cloner too.
How does this differ from TM?
They have nothing to do with each other. Time Machine is a backup program. SuperDuper/Carbon Copy Cloner are archiving programs. Confuse the two at your own peril.
A backup program makes it easy to go back in time and restore one or more old versions of files. If you accidentally delete or overwrite data and don't notice it right away, it's no problem. You should have to think as little as possible for backups because any human intervention will make them less reliable.
An archiving program makes a snapshot in time. It is a great way to restore to a specific point in time where you know your data was good. It is fast and easy to restore. Yes, it can be bootable. Archiving takes longer than backups, requires much more human intervention, and can require much more storage media.
Disk Utility is also a perfectly good archiving program. It can make bootable copies just like SuperDuper/Carbon Copy Cloner. The 3rd party tools just make it quicker and easier to do. That is all and good, but they have tried to market themselves as back tools, which they aren't. Catastrophic failures are pretty rare. Do you really need to duplicate your disk on a regular basis for something that might happen every 4 years? If your primary hard disk is worn out from all the duplications, wouldn't your backup disk be in just as bad shape? Do you really need zero downtime? If you do, there are better solutions available.

  • .img vs .dmg vs .cdr??

I'm hoping someone can explain to me the differences between the disk image formats, and which is the best for archiving DVDs (like, to keep a copy on your computer and make more copies later). I have already-made DVDs that I want to save onto the computer as backup, as well as current projects that I'd like to save as disk images so I can delete their other resources.
    Thanks!

Yeah, sorry about that, I posted this just before I saw the reply to the other post (had figured maybe I wasn't getting replies because it was in the wrong area of the board). Sorry, I'll mark this as answered now...

  • Burn DVD/ dmg/cdr file question

Hi- What happened to the dmg files that used to work on external dvd/tv players?
I'm trying to copy a dvd (home movie/ no copy protection) from someone abroad. The region seems ok, the original plays on my computer, plays on my tv via a jvc dvd player and another phillips dvd player.
I make a copy of the original dvd, via making a disk image; the file format is not dmg but cdr. Burn is ok, will play in the computer, but WILL NOT play on the same tvs with the phillips dvd player, or the jvc dvd player. Any suggestions how I can get this to play via the dvd players? Is it related to now having the cdr files?
In the past I've made lots of home movies and was able to burn them to a dvd and they would play on the same dvd players. I think the file format was a dmg though. ??????

Yes. I see that on the old powerbook G4 and the new imac, the process is a little different, but playing around with this I see that if I burn the cdr image to the dvd it's fine, like as a backup for the disk image, but I assume it's not meant to play in an external dvd player. Is that right? When I burn the contents of the cdr image to a dvd and just get the video__ts folder, then it plays on the computers, and it does play on a newer, cheap phillips dvd player but not on the older jvc dvd player. The original dvd I wanted to copy was from outside the US, so I'm wondering if it's a region problem with the JVC.
Several years ago I did some work with imovie and idvd and burned dvd's and they worked fine in the JVC. The original dvd I was trying to copy today also works fine in the JVC. Just can't figure out what' the problem.

  • *.dmg *.cdr (Disk Utility)

This is a cross posting. Didn't get any replies in the video apps forum.
I've searched the archives and one article on another site. When copying a CD, there is supposed to be a difference between CDR (exact copy) and DMG (single file) images. But I've copied three DVDs and in my newbie ignorance I got one CDR image and two DMG. These look identical in Finder (two folders audio_ts and video_ts). They have both successfully been burned to DVDs.
So, inquiring minds want to know: Is the difference between the two formats no longer relevant in Tiger? or with DVDs as opposed to CDs? or am I going to run into a problem with DVDs made from DMG eventually as I try them on more machines?
    Many thanks,
    Jeanne

    Hi Jeanne,
a .dmg file contains an image of exactly one partition. This is almost
always what you want when you take an image of one disk: you don't care
about anything except the data in the partition.
A .cdr file contains an image of a whole disk (leaving aside the
differences between a CD, DVD, and hard disk). This includes some data
which is outside the data partition and doesn't matter if you're not
going to use the image to master a new CD/DVD.
So in my opinion for your task there is no difference between using dmg or cdr.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Restore BOOTCAMP from .dmg image - Unable to scan (invalid argument)

I'm having trouble getting my maching back in order after a crash.  I'm running a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2009 with a Bootcamp partition.  Last week my harddrive crashed or something and I wasn't able to boot into either drive.  Using the Snow Leopard install DVD and Disk Utility I made .dmgs of the entire HD and each of the partitions (Mac HD and Bootcamp - maybe overkill but..).  I have since been able to restore my Mac side from the image, even without installing OSX - I just restored from the image using Disk Util again and everything seems to work fine.  But, now I've been trying to do the same thing with my Bootcamp side - I have a separate .dmg for that.  Everything seems to go fine except that when I try to restore it tells me the image needs to be scanned and when I scan I get the error message: "Unable to scan BOOTCAMP.dmg (invalid argument)".  I've tried using different schemes of compression/ no compression on the image, tried to convert to a .cdr then rename to .iso and restore using Windows' native Recovery option. I even tried Terminal - sudo asr restore -noverify -source _________ -target __________ , but it wouldn't let me drag and drop in the Bootcamp drive icon...
Now I don't know what to do but ask.
    Has anyone solved this problem????

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
Is there anyway I can convert my .dmg or .cdr/.iso to something that winclone can use?
ps I did finally get Disk Utility to scan the image.  I had to convert it to a compressed .dmg from the uncompressed one and it finished it fine but still in Restore in Disk Util. I can't set the destination as my bootcamp partition.
Looks like I'll have to reinstall everything then eh? Well thanks for your help.

  • Creating Disk Images for viewing on a PC

I created a data dvd of information for work on my iMac by dragging the folders that I needed onto the DVD.  I then burned it in my super drive.  I put the completed DVD into a pc and navigated through the files.
I created an image file (dmg and cdr) of the DVD on my iMac for future use in case someone else wanted a copy of the information.
When I burn the dmg or cdr image to a DVD, I can navigate through it with my iMac without any problems but when I put DVD into a PC, the PC says that it is a blank disk.
I guess my question is, how do I create an image so that I can burn it and use it on either a mac or a pc?

I created the image from a disk.  I put the DVD I wanted to image in the super drive, opened Disk Utility, selected the DVD from the left side of the Disk Utility window.  I then went to the menu:  File - New - Disk Image From <Name of the DVD>.  I tried to use different image formats (Read/Write, DVD/CD Master).
When I went to copy the dmg file, I selected it and then Burned it.  It is readable in my iMac but not on a PC.

  • Issues with BootCamp and mounted windows 8 install disk

I've been trying to install Windows 8 from a mounted Windows 8 System Builder install disk. When I mount the ISO and try to use bootcamp to install windows 8 the bootcamp application will not recognize the install disk I have mounted. Any issues? I've also attempted to install the disk on USB with no luck. The reason I need the mounted ISO is because my DVD drive is busted. I created ISO on a friends macbook pro by using disk utility. I have the dmg file, cdr file, and iso file but have had no luck with any of them. Can anyone help? I'd really like not to have to have to buy an external DVD drive.

Google is your friend. Easy? Probably not but it appears doable. Proceed at your own risk.

  • Can't get MPEG or Handbrake to work

I have a DVD that was made from my home movies. It's on my desktop as both a .dmg and .cdr file and I'm trying to get this into imovie. Handbrake posts "no valid source found" and MPEG doesn't open up the VOB files (I've tried these applications after reading some forums). I'm new to this and if you can help, that's great.

Hi and thank you both for responding. I'm still totally confounded. Here's what's happening. The .dmg file on my desktop has a pic of a hard drive and when I double clip, Video-TS files open, and it does play on DVD Player. But Handbrake still comes up with "No Valid Source Found". I've dragged the VOB file to MPEG and I see a grey line through the middle. At the bottom "IN" has 0, "Out" has 12:00 which is around the DVD's length. Nothing plays though on MPEG other than the grey line moving and I can't save the MPEG file as anything other than VOB. Will the MPEG problem be solved if I buy the application?

  • Disk Utlity can't burn .img files to disk

I'm newly digitizing old Beta tapes via a Canopus capture card. I've output my IMovie/iDVD projects to image files, but when I use Disk Utility to burn a DVD from the .img file I get nothing but verification errors and different checksums. I'm using Apple 4.7 Gb disks. The DVDs seem to play OK on my home Toshiba player, maybe with some stalling.
If I burn the iMovie/iDVD project directly to a DVD and then create a disk image file from that disk, Disk Utility burns successful copies from the .dmg file even on cheap-o Memorex disks.
I'm perplexed. This seems backwards. Could it be the difference between .img and .dmg files? Maybe I'm not using Disk Utility correctly in selecting/mounting/opening the image files...?I must say that Disk Utility Help is not very helpful.
I have the same problem on my new LaCie drive and the old SuperDrive.
    G4 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   IDVD 5.01, new LaCie drive

    More info:
After further investigation I 'discovered' Disk Utility:Images:Convert in the Disk Utility menubar. When I converted .img files to .dmg they seem to burn easily and accurately. I wonder why this isn't documented.
I'm wondering what the functional difference is between .dmg and .cdr image files.

  • Boot Camp Assistant couldn't partition the drive

    Hi everyone,
I recently deleted my windows partition, and wanted to create a new one, however, boot camp assistant told me that I couldn't (I do not know the exact wording). Boot camp assistant said to save my mac drive as an image, reformat my hard drive, and restore the image using disk utility.
SO, I tried to, but something went wrong, because the disc image I have will not mount....
In disk utility, I created an image of Macintosh HD, but I'm thinking I should have created an image of my hard drive "320.07 GB WDC3200..."
    Can anyone confirm this?
Also, if anyone knows how I can view the files in my dmg that I created, that would be great.
The message I get with disk utility is: Unable to attach "Macintosh HD.dmg" (No mountable file systems)
So I click okay, and verify the disk, and I get ALOT of incorrect block counts (should be 1001 instead of 1020220) for example..
After checking multi-linked files and such, disk utility tells me to "repair disk" But I cannot mount the image, therefore I cannot repair it. I tried to repaid the DMG itself, but nothing happens.
    Any info would be awesome.

converted corrupt DMG to CDR with disk utility. Some data loss occurred, but I got the majority of my files back.

  • Diskimage format

In diskutilities , you can create a disk image in different formats :
    .dmg, .img, .cdr.
What's the difference between these and when to use one or another
    Thanks for your replies
    Michel

    Hi, Michael.
The .dmg and .img extensions are generally synonymous and indicate a disk image. It could be a Read Only disk image, a Read/Write disk image, compressed or uncompressed, encrypted or unencrypted. In general, this is the extension you will see and use most often.
The .cdr is a DVD/CD-R master image. It's generally used when duplicating optical media, as discussed in "How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs."
The .sparseimage extension indicates a special form of Read-Write disk image. A Read/Write ".dmg" disk image always occupies the amount of disk space specified when it was created. A sparse disk image (.sparseimage) only occupies the amount of space on the disk necessary to store the files it contains. Sparse disk images have other interesting properties, such as you must occasionally compact them to recover space within the disk image occupied by files you have deleted within the disk image.
FileVault encrypted Home folders are actually sparse disk images.
Additional details, albeit quite technical, can be found in the documentation for the hdiutil command, which is the command behind the graphical user interface (GUI) provided in Disk Utility for creating disk images. Note that Disk Utility provides a GUI to only a limited number of the functions available in hdituil. One can do far more with disk images using hdituil in Terminal than one can with Disk Utility.
You should also spend some time reviewing Disk Utility's help. In Disk Utility, select Help > Disk Utility Help.
    Good luck!

  • The difference between a .dmg file & a .cdr file (using Disk Utility) ?

    Hi,
In particular, I created both from a DVD using Disk Utility.
When I chose "read only" a .dmg was created.
When I chose "DVD/CD Master" a .cdr was created.
They are exactly the same size.
    Is there any difference ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Pat De Marco

    HI Pat,
From Wikipedia: A file with the extension .dmg (an abbreviation for disk image) uses a disk image format commonly found on Mac OS X. The format allows secure password protection as well as file compression and hence serves both security and file distribution functions. Its most common function is the distribution of software over the Internet. When opened, DMG files are "mounted" as a drive within the Finder.
    From: Wikipedia .cdr and ISO
    ISO image
    Filename extension .iso
    Uniform Type Identifier public.iso-image
    Type of format Disk image
    Standard(s) ISO 9660
An ISO image is an archive file (a.k.a. disk image) of an optical disc using a conventional ISO (International Organization for Standardization) format that is supported by many software vendors. ISO image files typically have a file extension of .ISO but Mac OS X ISO images often have the extension .CDR. The name "ISO" is taken from the ISO 9660 file system used with CD-ROM media, but an ISO image can also contain UDF file system because UDF is backward-compatible to ISO 9660.

  • How iso to dmg, cdr, or...

How may I convert an iso file, into something readable by an OS 9.2? I noticed, that is no problem when I'm using the other machine running on OS X, but my iMac G3 PPC is not able to open the file with an iso extension. I tried converting the file first on a G5 with DiskUtility to cdr, but OS 9 won't open those either...
