Dmg won't mount

I have one encrypted disk image that failed to mount. It accepted the password, just didn't mount. Other similar DMGs work fine.
I recreated the image from data in the trash, then dragged the bad one to trash. Now I can't empty trash because that dmg is "in use". I can retrieve it from trash, but can't do anything with it.
What can I try to make this image mount? Pretend like it's important data.
I've tried logging out and back in, no go. Tried repairing permissions, I didn't expect that to do anything, and it didn't.
I'm a new user (3 weeks). OS X has been horribly unstable. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before thinking about a reinstall.

Have you been able to use the printer with that particular Mac? Unplug the printer and then try removing the printer from your printer list, then reinstalling it.

  • DMGs Won't Mount!

    Hello,
I am downloading iTunes 6 for my PowerMac G4 Cube. The DMG file downloads fine. But it won't mount. When I double click on it to mount it, this comes up:
"The following disk images failed to mount
iTunes6.0_Mac_OSX.dmg - Reason: No mountable file systems.
I have deleted a couple of apps such as Chess, Image Capture and iMovie but I do not believe that this has any effect on this problem.
    Thanks!

Hi, the DMG could be corrupted. When it's an extremely large file, sometimes missing a few packets makes the file broken. Have you tried redownloading it several times?

  • Help! DMGs won't mount!

I'm not an incredibly computer literate person but the description below is what my computer guy at work emailed to some people, and they didn't know what to do. Anybody else have any ideas???
The problem is that no DMG file is mounting. So Apple updates, downloaded
programs (eg. Firefox) and so on do not mount after downloading. I have
tried downloading various apps with no success - it always says that the
disk image failed to mount. Surprisingly, however, one thing that DID work
was the MS Office 2004 update. Strange.
I have tried the Restore Disk Permissions option in Disk Utility, as well
as some online solutions to restore a potentially corrupted Disk Image
    Mounter.
In terms of what is being affected, if I download something on my system
and it mounts, and I copy it across to Kaths, it doesn't mount. If I
download something on her system and it doesn't mount, I can copy it
across to my system and it mounts.
Her iBook appears to be behaving normally in all other aspects.
    Ideas?

Here's a MacWorld forums thread about dmg mounting problems. See the last post for half a dozen ways to try to deal with it.
    http://www.macworld.com/forums/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Board=UBB1&Number=369599
When you try what he calls "Procedure A" be sure to restart where it says. Also, you might possibly have to restart more than once for the system to adequately rebuild/replace the cache files. I hope something there works for you.

  • DMG won't mount on Snow Leopard

This isn't a bug with Photoshop, so I didn't log a bug. The "photoshopcs6_p1_mac_032112.dmg shows an error of -4960 when you try to mount it. The file size is 1,231,479,172.

Thanks Chris. It's not often that a second download of a file would give different results, but in this case the second attempt gave a file size of 1,032,137,621, and that did indeed work fine.

  • DMG Won't Mount. File Mount Greyed Out In DU?

    Had this problem before.
I can mount the .dmg by double-clicking it but I can't do it in Disk Utility as the Mount command is greyed out.
I believe that last time I was told to hold the Shift or Option key down whilst selecting File>Mount but I can't get it to work this time.

Yes the grey "Mount" changes to "Open".
Last year someone told me how to un-grey the "Mount" in the File menu but I can't remember exactly how or find the original thread.
In those days I was on Leopard so maybe it's changed.
It's not a problem . . . . just one of those irritating little things.

  • Encrypted dmg won't mount

Not sure where best to post this - admins -- if desired please feel free to move.
I created an encrypted .dmg file in disk utility to secure a small amount of info. I did a time machine backup of my machine, then did a clean install of OS X (getting ready to sell my mbp) and later tried to access the dmg on the time machine external drive. When I try to open the .dmg I am prompted for the password (this is NOT a forgotten password issue) and then I get the following error, "The following disk images couldn't be opened....no mountable filesystems"
I also did some searching on this and tried to do command line "hdiutil attach", and get the same no mountable file systems error.
I also tried entering the password and saving to keychain, but no results.
any help appreciated, extremely important info on this disk, thanks.....

Solved my own question with some more searching - the solution that worked for me is described here - step by step:
    http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/52C5671CD2608532862575ED0001F1EC
and in case that link ever gets broken here's the copied text:
    Open Terminal.app (Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
Once the terminal opens, type 'cd'  without quotes.
Navigate to the folder that contains the .dmg file.  In this article the .dmg file is located on the desktop and is called LabVIEW.dmg
Click on LabVIEW.dmg once and hold the mouse button down.
Drag the mouse into the Terminal window, and then release the mouse button.  This will add a static link after the 'cd' command we typed earlier.  You should see something similar to this:
Delete the actual file name (in this case LabVIEW.dmg) so that only the file's folder path remains:
    Press the Enter key.
Type 'hdiutil attach LabVIEW.dmg -shadow'  without quotes.
(replace LabVIEW.dmg with the name of the .dmg file you're trying to mount).
The Terminal will pause briefly and then mount the .dmg file.
National Instruments only recommends using this solution for .dmg files that are read-only.  This is due to fact that a shadow image is created that contains any changes to the .dmg file.  Since all National Instruments .dmg files are read only this method will work without issue in Mac OS X.

  • Encrypted .dmg won't mount after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Just upgraded to Snow Leopard and having trouble mounting an encrypted disk image that I use for my confidential files. I have tried mounting using both DiskImageMounter.app and the Disk Utility but both give error 60008, unable to attach.
Anyone else having similar problems or have suggestions for alternative ways of mounting?
    Best,
    Jon.

My encrypted disk image with confidential files was created under Leopard using Disk Utility. I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and when I try to mount the image, the password box comes up (as before the upgrade). But, I enter my password, and the disk image does not mount, it just keeps asking for the password again. I also have the latest MacBook Air and I also have an encrypted disk image there too with the same problem when I try to mount it. In addition, I have a LaCie 1TB External Harddrive that contains an encrypted disk image. When I try to mount this disk image, which normally appears on the desk top, I get the same repeating password box. Entering the password does nothing--other than causing the password box to reappear. All three encrypted disk images worked fine without any issues before the upgrade. So, based on the number of views that this post has had, this appears to be an issue that needs a resolution. Any suggestions or others with similar problems?

  • Aperture 3 Trial .dmg won't mount??

    Hi,
Has anyone had trouble mounting the 3.0 trial disk image? I've downloaded it twice, and each time I can't get it to mount.
I can mount other disk images just fine.
    Jen

Worked fine for me, but I did it on a MBP with 10.6.3 at the time.

  • DMG won't mount on my Desktop

I have an Intel Core Duo 2Ghz processor I-Mac amd I am running Mac OSX Version 10.4.8 software and I have tried to download numerous software updates and haven't been able to use them because after the software has downloaded, the computer tells me that the disk image is being prepared and then tells me that the mounting has failed. An icon appears on the desktop, but when I double click it to open...nothing happens (and nothing shows up in my dock). It it a software update issue or what? I'm stumped.

I am having a similar problem when I attempt to download software from third party websites such as Adobe or Skype. The computer also tells me that the disk image is being prepared, then has failed to mount, as the device is not configured.
I have attempted to use the disk utility this does not work.
This problem seems to have only occurred after having installed Apple Software Updates.
I find this issue to be highly frustrating, time consuming and costing me money, ie., having purchased software online to download, it is failing to mount.
I hope Apple is not indifferent to this problem and is able to rectify or offer solutions.

  • Years of data gone, backup DMG won't mount "No mountable file systems"

Could someone help me here, I have this problem.
The reason for this was that I ran into some complications with my boot camp windows install and wanted to start over. After returning the boot camp FAT partition space to Mac OS X it froze while attempting to create a new boot camp partition. "Boot Camp Assistant" suggested I backup my "Macintosh HD" and re-partition my HD because "some files could not be moved." Ok so, I backed-up my "Macintosh HD" volume to a DMG using Disk Utility selecting the volume and clicking new image icon, it is compressed, it is Leopard. I then booted with Leopard install DVD and began the restore process. Everything was working smoothly until the progress bar stopped animating, waited awhile and forced restart. When I restarted my internal HD had only an "Applications" folder which ended its contents with a half copied iDVD.app preceded by 73 other apps successfully restored. Now worst of all my Backup DMG produces the "No mountable file systems" error. Help, oh please help!

Ok, here is the output. It shows there is a problem with the resource fork XML, just like yours Shad Guy. If only their were some specs available I could try to fix it myself. An Apple engineer could most likely fix this in 20 min.
Also, thanks for your help man, having people tell me to give up is the worst.

  • Sims 3 DMG won't mount

I am trying to download the Sims 3. I bought it off EA games for MAC and everytime I try to download it, it says that "Error 4960". Can anyone help? What should I do?

  • DMG backup image won't mount

name-lt.dmg won't mount and says "File too large" as the warning error.  I used Disk Utility to make this compressed image for backup purposes and now I'm afraid I won't be able to open it.  A friend told me to use HexEdit to edit headers on the image.  Does anyone have any advice?  It's a 125gb backup image.  All other images I have made will mount and work fine.

The image was taken using my iMac (10.9) connected with a firewire to a macbookpro running 10.7.5

  • External Hard Drive won't mount - tried Disk Warrior, am backing up as a .dmg...will this work?

    Hi Guys,
Hopefully someone can help! Fairly desperate situation here...
I backed up around 700GB of data to an Iomega external hard drive (supplied by the client), using my Macbook Pro...all was fine when I unmounted the drive at the end of the backup.
The client took the drive away and called me to say he mounted the drive in Windows (on a PC), and he was able to work with the files for a time, but now the drive won't mount...
I collected the drive, hooked it up to my Mac Pro, but OSX tells me it can't mount the drive. It shows up in Disk Utility in the sidebar, but not on the desktop...
I tried repairing the disk using Disk Utility and with Disk Warrior, both tell me the disk cannot be repaired...
I am currently making a backup of the drive as a .dmg file, using a program called Disk Drill...it's slow as I expected, but I'm still not sure the .dmg will mount...because surely it's just making a copy of the data exactly, of which some part is not mounting (a mount directory or something???)
Is there any way you guys can think of me somehow taking the data and backing it up onto another disk?
Specialist recovery services seem to think there shouldn't be any problem recovering the data, and of couse, as a costly last resort, that's what I'll have to do, but does anyone know how they may go about doing it? It is something vastly complicated such as a command line thing?
Sorry about the length of this question...just hope someone can help!
    Thanks in advance...

You didn't say what format (filesystem type) the disk was.
However, I'd say your analysis is probably correct. Something has corrupted the disk. You can make a disk image copy to the .dmg which will preserve the data, such as it is, but I doubt extremely if it will fix any file system corruption.
Furthermore, if both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior have said the disk is unreadable I'm dubious that anything else will magically repair it and that recovery probably consists of snuffling through the disk block by block.
However if the filesystem is FAT (Windows) there may be other (Windows) utilities that can fix it.
You said you 'backed up the data'. Does that mean you still have the original data on your MBP? Are you trying to recover the client's changes?

  • How do I repair a damaged dmg that won't mount and Dick Utility can't repair?

Apple Care gave me wrong instructions on how to create a disc image of my internal HD then erased it. Now I have a .dmg that has the same gigs as the HD but won't mount and Disk Utility can't repair. Tried to recover files with Data Rescue 3 but that isn't going so hot. Any suggestions?
    Thank you

I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
I guess that it's a moot point to ask if you didn't test the dmg before you erased the drive. Do you have a Time Machine or other type of backup?
If not, it's a hard lesson to learn, but I would guess that unless you are willing to pay for expensive outside data recovery service, all is lost and you are starting over.

  • .DMG files won't mount on desktop nor will my iPods

My iPod classic won't mount on my desktop, nor can I get the iTunes .dmg file (or any .dmg file for that matter) to mount on my desktop. My iPod has worked fine for years. Now it won't mount on my desktop but it'll charge just fine. It used to automatically launch iTunes when I plugged it into the USB port, but now it won't. And when I launch iTunes, iTunes doesn't recognize it at all so I can't sync. I've tried restarting my computer, upgrading iTunes, switching USB ports and restoring my iPod. Still nothing. I don't think the problem is with my iPod, I think it's my computer. Because I just bought a brand new iPod Shuffle yesterday (because I thought my old iPod was dead) and the brand new Shuffle won't mount on my desktop either and won't automatically launch iTunes and iTunes doesn't recognize it at all to sync it. (I checked and my iTunes is up-to-date.)

Well, now I can't get it to safe boot. I've done it before, no problem but it won't work, now. I restarted, holding the Shift key, and it never would start after 10 minutes or so but the fan just kept getting louder and louder. I tried it 3 times. Then I tried booting from the Disk Warrior CD and it took 3 tries before it finally booted off the CD—I would hold the C key and it would just sit there and not start up and all of the sudden the restart gong would go off, I'd still hold the C key and it did this 3 times before it finally started from the Disk Warrior CD.
Did you want me to try moving those files off to the desktop even though I can't restart in safe boot or run disk utility?
I'm gonna call it a night for now. Maybe I can try the safe boot again tomorrow. How long do you think I should hold down the shift key before I give up?
    Thanks again!
