DMGs and Virtual Memory
When a DMG gets mounted, are its contents placed in virtual memory or RAM until it is dismounted?
If I create a 5 gig DMG on an external drive will it consume 5 gig of free space on my internal hard drive running OSX (until dismounted)?

Ok, testing I've done so far with 1 sparse image shows that if the hard drive is only 100gb but the image is set to 200gb it will only report 100gb free due to drive limitations. I haven't tested multiple sparse images yet however my guess is that they will report the same free space (and hopefully adjust accordingly, this is my concern) based on the drive size.
Then to complexity the problem more are sparse bundles from which I understand are typically for backups only. Then I ran into more less popular issues such as if the power is lost to the drive while an encrypted partition was open it can lead to corruption. For this it is recommend the image be backed up. Furthermore it is recommended the backup be non-encrypted in case of keychain corruption or loss of password. However this to me defeats the purpose of encryption in the first place especially since I have no secure location to physically store the data.
All I can say is that I'm glad I found these issues now as opposed to running into them on my own. I guess I just have to find the simplest method that works for me (if it exists...haha).

High Resident and Virtual memory for DBWR
Hello All
on 64 bit RHEL5 with physical memory of 98gb.
I see in OEM db console for 11gR2 database that dbwr processes is consuming 21gb of Resident and Virtual memory.
There are 3 dbwr processes (all using 21g) running and i see swapping happens even there is not much load on database .
Is it normal for dbwr to allocate such high memory ?
other memory config
sga_max_size big integer 60G
sga_target big integer 39808M

The one thing you have to remember when looking at memory usage of Oracle processes, is they all attach to the same set of shared memory so your values will look high. For example if you assume your sid is XE and run the following command you can get something like this.

Notice how my virtual size is all close to 875Mb for each process more than available with ram and swap space. That is because they all attach to my SGA thus the OS reports the SGA in it's memory listing.

Applemobiledevicehelper.exe and virtual memory
I noticed my computer was slowing down whenever iTunes was running, so i opened up windows task manager and viewed what processes were running. I noticed Applemobiledevicehelper.exe appeared more than 10 times taking up 18mb of virtual memory and the longer i kept iTunes opened the more they'd appear. I tried manually killing them but they just came back. I tried removing apple mobile device helper but then i wasn't able to sync my iPhone. Any ideas?
The link in the earlier reply to this doesn't work anymore.
Here's the thread that helped me fix this very same problem:

After several Hour of using, i have a WinNT message which said :
"Not Enough Virtual Memory......."
How many RAM is required for using JDEV 2.0 .
I have A PII-350MHZ With 128Mo RAM and 600Mo of Virtual Memory.
nullMinimum: WinNT 4.0, Pentium 200 Mhz, 96Mb RAM
Recommended: WinNT 4.0, Pentium 233 Mhz, 128Mb RAM (or better)
Your problem looks like bug. Probably a memory leak. We are
working on some of these issues for the production release.
Thanks,

I am shooting high school basketball video with two Sony HD cameras:
1 camera follows the action on the court, the other stays on the clock.
I then use iMovie 11 to superimpose the clock video using Picture-in-Picture onto the game footage.
Both cameras shooting highest HD at 30 fps.
Last basketball season, I was using iMovie 09 on a MacBook Pro, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 256GB SSD. I would import Video 1, import Video 2, superimpose Picture-in-Picture, share to iDVD, burn videos, no worries.
This basketball season, I am using iMovie 11 on a Mac Pro, dual Intel-6-core, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. I am having some kind of problem with memory (I think).
I boot my Mac Pro. I import 1-hour Video 1, it takes 11 minutes. If I now import the 1-hour Video 2 (with no reboot), it takes about 30 minutes.
If I boot my Mac Pro, import 1-hour Video 1 in 11 minutes, then reboot the Mac Pro again, the 1-hour Video 2 takes 11 minutes.
When I share to iDVD to burn standard DVDs, if I reboot before sharing in iMovie 11 to iDVD, it takes about 30 minutes. If I do not reboot, it takes about 2 hours.
When I export to Quicktime in iMovie 11 at 1920x1080 to burn on a Blu-Ray disc using Toast without a reboot, the export fails 4 times out of 5. If I reboot before exporting to Quicktime, the export always works.
On my MacBook Pro, using iMovie 09, of course all the times were slower because of fewer/slower cores, but I was never rebooting constantly.
So, as I write this, iMovie 11 on the Mac Pro is working away to export a Quicktime so I can burn it to Blu-Ray in Toast.
I have 16GB total RAM:
Free: 13.2GB
Wired: 824.5MB
Active: 1.7GB
Inactive: 281.7MB
Used: 2.7GB
VM Size: 118.5GB
Page Ins: 152.8MB
Page outs: 204KB
Swap Used: 344KB
Using about 5 cores for exporting the Quicktime (502.1%).
In another thread, I saw someone recommend using Onyx to in between imports or exports as a way to clean up memory.
But, that same thread also talked about how the poster's VM would get up to 4GB and that was when he used Onyx.
Is my VM size unusual? I cannot seem to find definitive information on the VM size and whether something is not right on the Mac Pro, or whether this is normal.
I hope someone in this forum can help. In the meantime, I just reboot my Mac Pro in between every import or export, which (to me!) is a little crazy.
Thanks much for any help or advice. If I can provide other details, please let me know.
LinuxElfThis is all being done on the internal SSD. 512GB total space.
When I started my latest two-video import, I had 460GB of free space.
After importing two videos and generating Quicktime video for Toast to burn a Blu-Ray, plus leaving the last game's Quicktime on the SSD, I now have 199.5GB free as I burn standard DVDs. (I get two Quicktime videos per Blu-Ray, so every other game I have an extra Quicktime sitting on the internal SSD taking up about 30GB space.)
After I have finished burning DVDs, within iMovie, I move the iMovie Project and associated video files from the internal SSD to a DROBO external drive unit.
So, once I am done with today's work, and after all the files including Quicktimes are moved to the DROBO, I expect to have over 480GB free.
That is a relevant question, thanks for asking, I should have included that in original post.

It causes my macbook pro 15" to get hot.
the very problematic plugin-cointainer is the cause of all this! i assume you may be open web page that contain flash right? high system resource slowing your browsing capabilities (click, tab, openpage, slowresponse, etc)
it is very common problem in windows. you can read it in here under Known Issues->http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6.15/releasenotes/
+Some slower machines may see degraded mouse responsiveness when viewing certain Flash videos
This PROBABLY can happen in your macosx too. Im not sure for that.
I also try firefox in Ubuntu, and suprisely it smoothly open flash video and playing FB Poker at the same time wo performance degradation .
i cant give any solution for this unless they came out with better and enhanced performance of firefox for all systems. -

Yet, still the problem persists. Only working on one small XAML file. VS2013 and Blend always report "There is not enough virtual memory available. Please save your work and restart {0}" (except when they report "Package 'DesignPackage'
failed to load" when run in safe mode) Saved my work and restarted VS2013, Blend, and the computer. Followed all other suggestions as much as possible.
There is an abundant available and virtual memory. The only changes from last week to this is Microsoft updates.
Has there been any new effort on this issue that I have missed?
What is left to do?Get IT to do it. Get them to uninstall all the latest updates, since you can identify them as a proximal cause of the problem. Also, search MS Knowledge Base or do some googling for the exact error text.

What's up with my Virtual Memory?
I've got a MacBook Pro 15" 2Ghz Core i7 running the 10.8.4 with all updates and 16gb of ram. I notice a couple of odd things over the course of a multiday session:
- Over a few days of usage launching and quiting most apps but with Mail, Terminal, LaunchBar and Safari running constantly, memory and virtual memory usage grow to the point where I have only a few dozen Mb of ram left and over 12 Gb of Virtual Memory consumed.
- Odder still is never, ever, in any session regardless how long, do my virtual memory statistics show more than 14 hits, not 14%, 14 all during boot time, despite hundreds of thousand of page-ins and lookups, and millions (22 million + this session) page faults.
I've noticed that Safari is the main culprit with memory consumption as it only frees up the bulk of any used if quit and relaunched. Even closing all tabs and windows has little to no affect on memory or virtual memory usage, but I have no idea why lookups once the machine is booted never, ever result in a hit despite a constantly growing number and size of swapfiles. Its almost as if Lion is encrypting the swaps but then doesn't have access to read them though I don't know how that might come about.
Anyone care to offer suggestions as to cause or debugging/troubleshooting tips?
Other notes:
This has been happening at least since 10.7.x.
Aside from apps listed above, other frequent apps are, Adobe Photoshop 5.5.x, Lightroom 5, LaunchBar, and ocassional MS Office 2011 with all updates.
Thanks,

Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs. -
Activity monitor inconsistancy - what is real virtual memory size???
When I look at my activity montior system memory screen I see real and virtual memory in MB (with the largest at about 500MB). As in my previous post I see a VM size of >240GB. When I go to the File menu and hit Save... and then look at the resulting processes.txt file I see that the virtual memory is now listed in GB. The real memory is consistent with what I see on the activity monitor window. See below. What's up? Which virtual memory is real and which is "virtual"?

1. You have the Finder and Safari open.
2. Both programs and no other ones use the content of a single block of data. This block takes up 2MB of RAM or swapfile space.
3. The block is counted as 4MB in the VM size entry because it's being used twice.
Expanding the scenario over many processes and blocks adds up to a VM size figure which is far larger than the actual amount in use or the combined total of RAM and swapfile space.

ZFS file cache and available memory
In one of our application, we use the Solaris calls 'sysconf' and 'swapctl' with appropriate parameters to find out the amount of total and free physical and swap memories on the machine at any moment.
1. I would like to know whether these calls would account for the memory reserved for the ZFS file cache, in the sense, would the above calls consider the memory
that is a part of the ZFS file cache within the total/used physical and swap memory?
2. Would the ZFS file cache be accounted in the in the output of command 'vmstat'?frankrinmelrose,
With only 1.5 GBs free on your HD, it is not surprising that you are having difficulties. In fact, it is rather dangerous to operate your computer with this little space. While later versions of OS X are much better at dealing with too-little disk space, there is still a risk that you could suffer a major disk error. This is a common and well-known problem, and could result in a loss of all your data.
I consider around 10 GBs of free HD space a good target to shoot for, but certainly no less than 5 GBs. This should give OS X enough "flex" space on the boot volume. If you are using all of your available disk space, it might be time to migrate some of that data to an external HD.
I could give a long-winded explanation of how inactive memory fits into this equation, but the short version is that it just doesn't matter in this case. In this case, Safari (following your example) has been given all of the physical and virtual memory it is ever going to get, and the issue is not with what physical memory it occupies, but with how the HD is being accessed.

How do I increase the virtual memory? My Mac is running slow and seems to be bogging down at times. Can/will anyone help?
Thankx in advance
MarquisIt probably said you were running out of application memory.
There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details. -
Getting ms word and more memory for iBook
I just got a used iBook 10.4. It doesn't have ms word. The problem is, it only has 640 MB capacity and i'm worried that getting word will take up too much space. Are there any tricks to expanding the memory? and does anyone have any idea how much more memory i'll be able to get from a mac store?
Memory on a Mac is a combination of RAM chips and 'virtual memory' on your hard drive. You need space in both.
Heat was a problem with some iBooks, but if your's is still running, it's likely OK. Your computer can be fit with 1.12 to 1.5 GB of chip memory, and more disk memory than it needs. If Apple no longer carries your memory type, consider a quality online fix-it shop, or do it yourself. (Buy a book and learn about your Mac.)
Also, consider the free NeoOffice,
NeoOffice (look around for PPC variety)
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15797/neooffice
It's a complete office suite; and Microsoft XML format (for Word) was supposed to be called OpenOffice XML format. NeoOffice is a smaller and more reliable version of OpenOffice.org. (Watch for the .org: it's the free one.)
